CRS Deep Dive: Speaker Now

A funny thing may be happening on radio’s (supposed) way to the dustbin of history: a detour called the smart speaker. Amazon’s Echo, Google Home and other devices were the subject of Edison’s annual CRS research presentation (recap here). And in a twist on the “new technologies are assaulting terrestrial radio” narrative, these speakers are returning radio to the household and offering inroads for radio brands. Country Aircheck spoke with Edison’s Megan Lazovick and Larry Rosin for this deeper look at what it means, including how the word “recall” might reassert itself in radio’s vocabulary. “It’s not all gloom and doom,” says Lazovik, who’s done more than her share of research on digital media. “There’s an opportunity for radio here, instead of just competition.” While a second (or third) look at the full presentation is more than warranted (click here), here’s the thumbnail: The number of homes without radio is Megan increasing, from 4% in 2008 to 21% in 2016. Lazovik (Ed. Note: Rosin teases an eye-opening update to that number coming next month in the company’s Infinite Dial study.) Meanwhile, smart speaker ownership is up to 16% (18+) totaling 39 million people. Among country listeners, 96% wanted a smart speaker for listening to music, 68% for listening to a favorite radio station. Larry Smart speakers are also changing beRosin havior toward communal listening, with 75% entertaining friends or family with the speaker. More than half (57%) use the device while others are in their household most of the time. The devices help country fans find new songs (71% agree) and artists (74%). Almost half (48%) of country-listening smart speaker owners have listed to a radio station on the device in the past week. More cite increased audio listening (76%) and 36% agree they’re listening to more radio. (continued on page 11)

Freaks Come Out At Night

When Blake Shelton kicked off his Country Music Freaks Tour with Trace Adkins, Carly Pearce and Brett Eldredge in Tulsa (2/15), KVOO & Classic Country KXBL PD Brian Jennings was on hand for Country Aircheck. And he was impressed. “It was tremendous,” he says. Jennings notes the crowd sang every word to Eldredge’s latest tune “The Long Way.” “During his set, Brett was talking about how the last few years have been a whirlwind for him,” he reports, “and it was awesome to see them sing that song back to him. It’s one of the first indications that airplay is really impacting people. Blake Shelton “The lights go down and Blake comes out

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE BMLG Records’ Danielle Bradbery discusses her most influential music: 1. Carrie Underwood: I grew up listening to her. I know what that starstruck feeling is, because I had that when I met her. I look up to her a bunch because of her powerful voice and her music. 2. Twenty One Pilots: It’s two guys; one Danielle plays drums and the other plays everything Bradbery else and sings. Their concert absolutely blew me away. I was so inspired by their stage presence and their show overall. 3. Martina McBride: I always picked the powerhouse singers to listen to because I loved to challenge myself by singing their crazy big songs, just to see if I could do it. I always sang along to “A Broken Wing” in my room. I was amazed by her long high note at the end. And she never ages. She has this delightfulness and goodness about her, and is really sweet. 4. Thomas Rhett: I’ve learned a lot from him. He’s become my big brother. He was kind enough to help me out when I wasn’t doing many shows. He invited me out on his Home Team Tour to sing “Playing With Fire” with him. He always has amazing advice on my music and just life in general. 5. Blake Shelton: He was my coach on The Voice – but he has continued to have my back, listen to my new music and give me advice. He’s a busy one, but he still reaches out as much as he can. He brought me under his wing and I’m very thankful for him. • Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: There are so many artists I love, like Chris Stapleton and Brett Eldredge, whose entire albums I haven’t listened to yet. But I definitely will! •”Important” music you just don’t get: Opera music. I just never got it, and still don’t. I give props to them, but I don’t know how they even do that with their voices. • An album you listened to incessantly: Post Malone’s Stoney. It’s a good-feeling album. • An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Cassie’s “Love A Loser.” It’s a really cool, vibey song. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I’m open to anything, but people might be surprised to learn that I love to listen to Latin music.

and the place goes ape,” adds Jennings. “We forget just how connected he is to his audience.” Another ear shattering moment came when Pearce joined Blake onstage for “Lonely Tonight” to sing Ashley Monroe’s part. “They had only met briefly a few hours before their duet and you could tell Blake was really impressed – and kind of surprised – by Carly’s range. The audience was, too.” While it’s expected that Adkins would join Shelton for their hit “Hillbilly Bone,” his set actually takes place in the middle of Shelton’s. “It kept you on your feet,” Jennings says. “It’s a neat surprise that kept the audience alert.” –Erin Duvall

Luke Gets What Luke Wants

Luke Bryan’s What Makes You Country Tour opened in Springfield, MO (2/16), with Kip Moore and The Cadillac Three. KTTS APD/morning show host Cash Williams gives Country Aircheck a rundown. “The stage was a normal setup, with a catwalk that leads to a square stage at the end,” he said. “This is where Luke enters, rising into sight with ‘Huntin’, Fishin’, Lovin’ Every Day.’” Bryan was all about fan interaction, bringing a cooler onstage before “All My Friends Say,” and even throwing a few beers to the crowd, before spewing a can all over them. Luke Bryan Williams says Bryan made sure to cover all his hits as well as his “favorite party song of all time,” Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline.” He also threw in a little a cappella action at the end of “Strip It Down,” which Williams noted the ladies in the audience almost took as a command. “’Country Girl (Shake It For Me)’ was next – and they shook it,” Williams added. “What Luke wants, he gets.” Bryan’s encore wrapped with “That’s My Kind of Night.” “He was trying to celebrate with the crowd by handing out a beer,” Williams said. “Instead, he got hit with a beer right ... well, where he’d rather not get hit, and he ended the show with, ‘Damn!’” –Erin Duvall

Reason To Party

Cole Swindell launched his Reason To Drink Tour in Allentown (2/15) supported by Lauren Alaina and Chris Janson. WCTO/ Allentown OM Jerry Padden sent back a full recap. “Walking in there I really didn’t know what to expect,” he says. “Walking out, I was in awe! And I wasn’t the only one.”

Pictured (l-r) are KVOO’s Brian Jennings, KWEN’s Jenny Law and husband Mark, KTGX’s Houston Gaither and Karla Cantrell, Shelton, KRMG’s Skyler Cooper, the label’s Kristen Williams and Mark Niederhauser, KWEN’s Matt Bradley, KVOO’s Kristina Carlyle and Scripps’ Steve Hunter and wife Kelly Kleiner.

The night was filled with energy and hits from each singer, as well as their favorite covers. Janson joined Swindell for a take on Alan Jackson’s “Chattahoochee” and Ed Sheeran’s “Shape Of You,” while Swindell took on Prince’s iconic “Purple Rain.” Padden says Swindell and Alaina even turned “Middle Of A Memory” into an “explosive” duet. “Lauren Alaina can simply sing her ass off,” he adds. “She’s a star.” Swindell ended the night with an encore of “You Should Be Here” into “She’s Country,” “My Kind Of Night” and “Get Your Shine On.” “It was a great night,” Padden concludes. “The crowd stood up, danced, sang and chanted.” –Erin Duvall

Congrats to Kelsea Ballerini, Mike Wilson, Bill Macky and the Black River promotion crew on landing this week’s No. 1 with “Legends.” The song is the first single from Ballerini’s album Unapologetically. CRS Deep Dive: Speaker Now

(continued from page 1) Gather Round: For Lazovik, the research bore out what she was already seeing. “There were some things I suspected having these devices in my home,” she says. “I have two small children and have been watching them interact with Alexa. So I saw this in my personal life and didn’t want to make assumptions, but when we went into [study participants’ homes] we saw how receptive families were as a whole. It was a delight to see, especially through the lens of Country radio and it’s prominent themes of family and home.” A potential sea-change in at-home consumer behavior may be at hand. “Here’s one [stat] that didn’t make it into the presenta-

tion,” she says. “Since getting your Smart Speaker, you are finding yourself listening to audio at times you wouldn’t typically be listening ... 76% of Country listeners agree.” Anecdotally, she points at “Jean,” the subject of one of the presentation’s in-home videos. “[The clip] shows a mom turning on [WBYT/South Bend, IN] then going to do a load of laundry,” Lazovik says. “This is a big part of the story – people are finding moments throughout the day to use these devices. That adds up to more audio listening and if they are loyal to a Country radio station, hopefully they find that station on their smart speaker.” Taking Reservations: Edison surveyed 810 smart speaker owners, roughly a third of whom were country listeners. Even among the latter group, the devices come with concerns as 38% agree that Amazon or Google knows too much about their life, worry the government is able to listen to their private conversations (22%), or

Page 13

that hackers will access their home or info (36%). “Outside of smart speaker owners you see greater concern,” Lazovik notes. “If you think about it, 80% of people own a smart phone, so they’re already walking around with a device that could potentially be listening to them anytime,” she says. “So it’s only a matter of time before people get over that with the smart speaker, even though it’s listening in a more obvious way.” Rosin noted another concern during the session that PD bonus structures may be a disincentive for programmers to promote athome smart speaker listening. “Some people thought I was saying something I wasn’t,” he says to clarify. “If someone switches from over-the-air to stream listening at a station that doesn’t do a 24-7 simulcast of the terrestrial signal, that could hurt a programmer if they’re bonused solely on the over-the-air ratings.” His hope

is companies will straighten out those structures to remove any reluctance on the part of PDs to promote smart speaker listening. And there are myriad other potential issues being debated, from broad-scale discussions regarding technology’s impact on society to specific questions about how Amazon, Google and others use and share (or don’t) the data from listeners that radio drives their way. “These are bigger concept things I’m not about to tackle as a researcher,” Lazovik says. “And whether you agree with where the technology is going or not, the health of your radio station probably dictates you work toward these devices.” Brand On The Run: As noted multiple times in the presentation, job one for stations is getting their stream up and available on smart speakers. The crucial aspect is getting listeners to properly identify a station, which may mean reintroducing a concept deemed less necessary with the advent of PPM. “Strength of a brand is so

Page 15

important on a smart speaker,” Lazovik says. “Absent visual cues, it’s about what listeners can recall, so every brand should be concerned about being top-of-mind. The good news is, that’s what radio is good at – being top-of-mind in a community.” “If I ran a radio station, I’d run an ID at the top of every hour saying, ‘Alexa, play [the station’s brand name],” Rosin says. Specificity is incredibly important, however. “Not sure if it’s still this way, but there was a time if you asked Alexa to play ‘Lite FM’ it would play you a station from Beirut that’s actually ‘Light FM.’” Beyond imprinting the properly articulated station brand on listeners, subsequent steps can include building smart speaker skills like flash briefings and contesting. The sooner radio stations stake their smart speaker claim, the better prepared they’ll be as the technology spreads to the car and beyond. View the full presentation here. –Chuck Aly CAC
