Radio Reacts To CRS 2018

The CRS experience is different for everyone, so Country Aircheck reached out for a cross-section of thoughts and opinions, starting with a seminar rookie. KRTY/San Jose’s Jamie Jackson: I had such an amazing time and I am incredibly grateful to have been given this opportunity. As a Rusty Walker Scholarship winner, we met the board members on Monday. They welcomed us and [said] we can look for them and ask questions any time we feel the need. What really impressed me was that while out and about at different sessions or hangs, a lot of them stopped me to ask how things were going. It was nice of them to take the time to do that. I enjoyed the smart speaker and streaming sessions. I also really enjoyed the Q&A with Jamie Brad Paisley – he has such a fun personality. Jackson One [limitation] I found in sessions was the lighting. It was pretty dark, which was fine for the first day. But having activities every minute of the day into the late hours of the night (or early morning), and coming into that dark room for the first sessions of the day made it a little hard to keep your eyes open, no matter how compelling the information was. I saw and heard so much music in just a few days, with the Sony show being my favorite. I love the guitar pull style. I also really enjoyed the New Faces Show. Lauren Alaina’s “Three” and Michael Ray’s “Her World Or Mine” stood out. WIVK/Knoxville’s Nikki Thomas: In addition to the spectacular emceeing talents of Royce Risser, there were a lot of things I really enjoyed this year. This was my third or fourth year for the Programming Mentoring Breakfast and once again, we had some super-talented people come through. It’s always exciting to hear their ideas and answer their questions. I loved having Cumulus’ Mary Berner at the event as a speaker. She has such great presence and brings a wonderful energy into the room. Her leadership and insight make her one of the best in the business. Randy Lane’s 10 Trends Impacting Morning Radio was also very intriguing. Radio is constantly evolving Nikki Thomas and growing and CRS is a great chance to soak up so much information. I can’t imagine skipping a year!

Big Machine’s Carly Pearce was “wined” by fellow artists in her intro video while CRS attendees dined at Wednesday’s (2/7) New Faces Of Country Music Show. Pearce kicked off the night with a set that included current single, “Hide The Wine” as well as her debut chart topper, “Every Little Thing.” Up next was Atlantic/WEA’s Michael Ray with hits “Kiss You In The Morning” and “Think A Little Less,” plus a new song from his upcoming album, “Her World Or Mine.” Big Machine’s Midland put their harmonies to good use on current single “Make A Carly Little” and the trio’s debut No. 1, “Drinkin’ Pearce Problem.” “CRS changed our lives,” said

Thank you for believing in us.” Opening her set at a piano with “Three,” Mercury’s Lauren Alaina Luke Combs packed a one-two punch with No. 1s “What Ifs” (a solo effort that night, without duet partner Kane Brown) and “Road Less Traveled,” as well as new single “Doin’ Fine.” River House/Columbia’s Luke Combs’ intro video revealed his red-bearded burly fans known as “Luke-Alikes” and even had one pretend to start his set. LBT & Friends Open Tour

Little Big Town’s The Breakers Tour opened last week (2/8) in Oklahoma City, and KTST & KXXY’s Bill Reed was there to break the story for Country Aircheck. “I’ve been looking forward to Little Big Town’s first headlining tour to come through OKC, but was curious as to who they would tour with,” Reed says. “Kacey Musgraves and Midland are perfect choices [for] a night of great variety.” The latter opened the show on a small stage in the middle of the venue floor. “They were tight but also have a looseness about it that shows why they won’t be openers long,” Reed says. Musgraves showcased new material during her set. “She’s good in this setting and will grab more fans as the tour progresses,” he adds. “I’ve seen Little Big Town several times through the years – from our conference room to now headlining Chesapeake Energy Arena – and each time I come away thinking these guys really like performing and could do it no matter the setting,” Reed says. “’Oklahoma City, we used to just practice like this in our living room, so let’s cozy on up and play,’ they told the crowd. And play they did. My favorite part was seeing them on the smaller stage out front. Midland came out during ‘Day Drinking,’ handing out a few beers to the crowd on the way to the stage. LBT also covered ‘Wichita Lineman,’ which I was glad to see get a roar of approval from the crowd.”

ways the industry can stay competitive moving forward. According to iHeartCountry’s Rod Phillips, “We are in the radio business, but it is really the content business, and it’s unlimited.” He pointed to the widening array of platforms for interacting with listeners – computer, mobile phone and traditional broadcasts. “It still starts with a great show,” Cumulus’ Mike McVay said, citing the importance of entertaining the audience. Not only should hosts engage fans on social media and cultivate their own brands, those who understand sales and advertising have an edge in the market, according to McVay. NYU music/technology professor Larry Miller said, “Some of the skills we need to develop are the ones that drove us to get into this business in the first place – the passion and love of storytelling.” Phillips agreed that a great host needs more than just a good voice and enunciation. McVay sees promise in upcoming generations. “I’m excited about Millennials,” he said. “They aren’t going to say ‘AM/ FM,’ they just say ‘entertainment.’ They will break down barriers, and we will see things we never thought possible.” McVay also sees room to improve the radio experience for listeners and advertisers, by hiring copywriters to write better spots and playing fewer ads in a row with more frequent breaks. “Radio is still our core business, and it’s a good one,” summed Phillips. “Give listeners a reason to not listen to the music elsewhere.” BMLG Lunch: Wednesday’s event was a showcase of starsin-the-making bookended by performances from two of country’s biggest hitmakers: Thomas Rhett and Sugarland. Rhett opened and charmed the room with “Marry Me.” The reunited duo of Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush proved still-relevant, reminding attendees of their successful track record by performing hits “Baby Girl,” “All I Wanna Do,” “Something More” and “Stuck Like Glue.” Then the reinvigorated Sugarland took it up a notch with the comeback anthem “Still The Same.”

Serving as emcee, BMLG President Scott Borchetta recounted working with Sugarland on their first album during his days at their former label home, Mercury. He noted that three artists BMLG launched in the last year all scored No. 1 hits, including Brett Young, Midland and Carly Pearce. Young took the midday stage to perform “Like I Loved You,” “In Case You Didn’t Know” and “Sleep Without You.” He said, “I know how many superstars there are in the format, and how many hours there are in the day. So thank you Country radio for taking a chance on me.” Tyler Rich, Drake White and Trent Harmon also took turns in the spotlight. Rich’s acoustic set included “Adrenaline” and “The Difference.” White introduced new songs “All Would Be Right With The World” and “Girl In Pieces.” Harmon’s vocal acrobatics and emotional delivery carried “You Got ‘Em All.” Art & Artist: Brad Paisley sat for an in-depth interview titled The Art and the Artist, which connected all the creative aspects of his life: songwriting, performing, music video production, painting and comedy. “Writing a song, doing a painting, creating a video concept, it’s all the same muscle,” he said. “Guitars are very similar to paint brushes.” As Paisley walked attendees through the highlights of his career -- convincing Joe Galante to release “I’m Gonna Miss Her” to radio, explaining what a music video was to Andy Griffith Brad Paisley and hosting the CMA Awards with the flawless Carrie Underwood – he noted that the “greatest moment” of his entire life was having the first Bachelorette – Trista Sutter – in the midst of media blitz before her final reveal, appear in the “Celebrity” video and pick Little Jimmy Dickens. “I don’t need to do anything else in my career,” he said.

(continued from page 1) KUZZ/Bakersfield’s Brent Michaels: I really enjoyed CRS and, in full disclosure, was a member of the Agenda Committee for the first time. I thought there were a wide variety of topics covered for programmers. I particularly enjoyed the metrics panel on Wednesday morning that showed potential indicators in predicting hits to [complement] Brent a PD or MD’s gut instinct. I don’t know Michaels that they will change the way I make music decisions per se because I already look at many of the metrics they listed, but I’d give them slightly more weight than I am currently. I also thought the insightful look into Brad Paisley’s career was fantastic.

WWLY/Panama City, FL’s Melissa Miller: My first CRS was all about the music – the songwriters who created the songs, fresh talent, the stories behind the big hits, new tunes, all of it. It’s become the thing I look most forward to. Radio is so fast-paced and hectic at times, so it’s refreshing to be able to take a breath, listen to successful people who have been where we are now, and really focus on creating a better product for our listeners. I love that the seminar topics and panel discussions are timely, invoke creativity and, in Melissa many cases, provide step-by-step instructions. Miller The research presentation changed the way I thought about smart speakers and helped me understand how vital that technology is. Podcasting: Where the Passion Pays Off and You Are A Brand: How to Build A Fan Base You Can Monetize inspired me to branch out into areas I’ve previously neglected. In conclusion: I love CRS. Literally everyone in radio could benefit from this event. WLHK/Indianapolis’ Fritz Moser: The Monday-Wednesday format makes things feel rushed to me and I’m glad we’ll be back to the normal schedule next year. I thought the Mary Berner chat was enlightening. She seemed pretty transparent as to where the company had been and how she continues to change the culture while facing Cumulus’ many challenges. It also felt like this was the year of the smart speaker. There were lots of fresh ideas on how to bring our station to the Alexa party. Favorite evening events: Luke’s Super Bowl party did not disappoint – unless you Fritz Moser were a Patriots fan. Garth at Layla’s was really

special, too. But just seeing colleagues and friends was probably the one thing I always look forward to. WIBF & WDBF/Lewistown, PA’s Dawn Ziegerer: I am a nerd. You could put me in any session and I will learn something. I enjoyed the Edison research about Alexa, and the Miles Adcox session was great. I also loved Bob Kingsley’s Acoustic Alley and the mentoring breakfasts. I went to the session on sexual harassment and it was fine, [but] no new information. I thought it would be [more] thought provoking. For example, when is the “Time’s Up” campaign coming to country music? Why Hollywood and not the music industry? Instead, it was more of an HR session Dawn Ziegerer about what is appropriate and what isn’t. I’m from a small market [and] the CRS experience is different for a lot of us. We have to pay for our own plane tickets, hotel, registration, food, Ubers and more. The record labels aren’t paying for us to stay at the Omni and we can’t afford it. We travel in from all over the U.S., so we get to CRS exhausted. That said, CRS needs a nap room! We can’t just walk upstairs, and going back and forth between our hotels is costly. They had a meditation room, but I bet everyone fell asleep!
