What’s In Your Gold Wallet?

Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney, Zac Brown Band, Blake Shelton, Tim McGraw and Florida Georgia Line lead this edition of the Power Gold Top 100, placing 46 songs on the list. Bryan posts 11 hits in the Top 100, followed by Aldean with eight, ZBB and Chesney with six, and the others all with five each. These seven are the only artists to have five or more songs on the list. There are only 11 songs that weren’t in the Top 100 we printed last April. That’s the lowest influx of titles in any two-year comparison since 2010, when 10 new tracks hit the top 100. The number of new titles appearing on past PG lists were: 2017, 14; 2016, 36; 2015, 31; 2014, 39; 2013, 22; 2012, 33; 2011, 13; and 2010, 10. Building and maintaining station and personality brands on social media continues to be a hot topic and, as Facebook and other platforms evolve, video seems to be a consensus pick as an effective use of any marketer’s time. So how do people who are known for their voices start showing their faces? Country Aircheck reached out to a few on the front lines for an update on best practices.

“For any air talent now, your airshift doesn’t end when you’re off the air,” KUZZ/Bakersfield PD Brent Michaels says. “We’re more than radio stations, we’re a media company. How can we expand what we’re doing on the air to what we’re doing on social media?” Michaels is one of Brent Michaels many who have started to focus on video. “We try to put as much content in as little time as possible,” he says. “We know people lose interest. They want to see 60 seconds or less.” KUZZ’s Facebook page has a variety of video features, from a Blake Shelton tour announcement video pieced together with a few clips provided by the artist, to a clip in which Michaels allows his family to give him a glitter beard. “Anything that deepens the brand and brings people back to the radio is a win,” he explains. WYCD/Detroit afternoon hosts Holly Rob Stone & Holly Hutton Hutton and Rob Stone have also embraced the medium. “Our PD Tim Roberts gave us a challenge to do two videos a week,” Hutton explains. “We rose to that challenge and we did one a week. [laughs] Every week, we do a FB live with a pet of the week.” For Hutton and Stone, consistency has been key. Plus ... “Cute puppies are always good online,” Stone notes. By choosing to make Facebook Lives, the pair takes advantage of the notifications alerting followers that their video is happening now. “People look forward to Wednesdays at 2:30pm,” Stone says. “If we’re running late, people start to comment, ‘Where are the dogs?’” “Do what you’re passionate about,” Hutton advises. “Rob’s a dog person, so we don’t showcase

People ask questions specific to each animal during our ‘Lives’ and we get them adopted.” Perhaps the most enticing argument for creating video content for socials or even the station website is that the barrier to entry is extremely low. “Not having fancy expensive equipment shouldn’t turn anyone off from making video,” Michaels says. “People want to see you as well as hear you.” “We’ve shot everything on our phones,” Stone adds. “Maybe once or twice we used the station iPad.” Video editing has come a long way as well. While WYCD prefers to go live, KUZZ has found more success with edited video. “There are a lot of user friendly editing platforms,” Michaels asserts. “There will be some trial and error but, if you’re willing to invest a little bit of time, it’s relatively easy to create. If you have experience editing audio, you can figure out how to edit video.” Stone adds, “I use the iMovie app on my phone.” Finally, simply having a finished product is a win. “Don’t be upset if your video doesn’t get a lot of views,” Stone adds. “Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and take the time to build an audience.” –CA Staff

Page 10 The Top 100 features 72 songs from 27 different male artists, seven songs from two women, six songs from a pair of duos and 15 songs from six groups. That compares to last year’s 73 songs from 31 males, seven songs from two women, six songs from a pair of duos and 14 songs from six groups. The July 2016 PG Top 100 featured 69 titles from 25 men, six songs from two women and 25 songs from 10 duos/groups. For the third consecutive year, Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood are the only two solo female artists to make the list. Like last year, they post seven songs (four Carrie, three Miranda) in the Top 100, compared to six in 2015. In 2015, Miranda and Carrie each had four, while Taylor Swift added one for a total of nine. Those three women contributed eight hits in 2014. Six of the seven top Power Gold artists mentioned in the opening paragraph were the gold leaders in 2016, as well. The only change is that McGraw replaced Underwood. As we said, this year’s top seven contribute 46% of the songs; last year the top seven had 43%. Three songs jumped into the Top 10 from the 20s, and all belonged to Jason Aldean. “My Kinda Party” leapt 25-5, “Dirt Road Anthem” was up 21-7 and “When She Says Baby” bounded 26-9. Also making its way into the Top 10 was Underwood’s “Blown Away,” up from 11. A trio of hits surged 30 or more places. The top gainer was Little Big Town’s “Boondocks,” moving up 42 spots 98-56, Bryan’s “Roller Coaster” up 36 places 84-48, and Underwood’s “Before He Cheats” ahead 35 notches, 51-16. Finally, yet another special mention for ZBB’s “Chicken Fried.” Since debuting on the 2010 Power Gold Top 100 at No. 2, it has ranked 3, 1, 2, 1, 5, 6, 4 and comes in at No. 2 this year.
