Q&A: Beasley Captain DJ Stout

A 20-year station vet in his hometown of Charlotte, Beasley WSOC OM/PD DJ Stout was named Country Format Captain in May (Breaking News 5/23). Having had a few months to settle into the role, he spoke with Country Aircheck about his approach and several other topics. CA: How did the Format Captain position come up? DJS: [Beasley EVP Programming] Justin Chase and [Beasley VP Programming] Buzz Knight told me they were thinking about adding format captains and that I was one of the PDs they wanted to talk to about it. I said, DJ Stout “Absolutely!” How does your background lend itself to the additional role? Having been in the Country format for most of my life has helped me create great relationships on the label side of the business, but also the radio side. I personally worked with two format captains [at CBS Radio], so I have a good idea of what I think works, what doesn’t and how we can make our Beasley Country stations better. Does being in a competitive battle in Charlotte help or hinder your efforts across the format? I think it helps. I have never programmed a radio station that wasn’t in a competitive battle, so I am very comfortable in that situation. I believe my background, as well as the experience of our other programmers, is great for brainstorming ideas and strategies that have worked and not worked, as well as reviewing our competition’s efforts that have or haven’t been successful. As far as I am concerned, the more ideas and information the better. What type of guidance are you giving to stations? I’m working on some cluster projects that will be beneficial to our stations and to the labels. I’ve also been an extra voice or ear when needed for our PDs. We have a great group of experienced programmers, so I want to be of help whenever I can and not someone who shoves stuff down their throats. (continued on page 5)

has been on 20 years and his co-host Geoff Emery is approaching that mark,” he says. “They were nominated for an ACM this year and listeners know our heritage staff as family and friends.” The station did a Secret Sound cash promotion the first half of the book that Michaels says hit the mark. They also gave away Amazon Echo Dots on the air, an idea seeded in Nashville. “That was a big part of CRS this year – how much in-home devices are exploding.” The “Garth-nado” that blew through the area helped close out the ratings period. The station sent busloads of listeners to a couple different shows in California. “Garth has moved the needle for us,” Michaels says. “We had him last Spring, last Fall and this Spring in our area.” KRST/Albuquerque: Another PD who capped off his first year with a jump to the top is Cumulus’ Brad Hansen. “I think it is more of a cumulative effect over the previous year,” he says of the climb to the top. He started by using the Nash Nights Live “plain wrap,” where Hansen schedules the music locally and the network does the breaks. He also moved veteran midday host Juan Velasco to afternoons. “When you go to our events, Juan is the guy everyone in town Brad Hansen knows,” Hansen says. The station went heavy on trip contesting, sending listeners to CMA Music Festival in Nashville, Route 91 Festival in Las Vegas, Tim & Faith in Denver, Kenny Chesney at Mohegan Sun and the Country Fan Fest in Utah with Thomas Rhett, Old Dominion and Billy Currington. Hansen adds, “We also implement a ton of localization within Ty, Kelly & Chuck, Nash Nights Live and Blair Garner in overnights.” WAXX/Eau Claire, WI: Mid-West Family’s Alex Edwards says, “Building on what we’ve been doing and differentiating from competitors as live and local gives us a direct advantage.”

In addition to the tried and true Hi-Lo cash game, the station has dialed in with Facebook contests to help with TSL. “We tell them they have an hour to like posts in order to win,” says Edwards. Hitting the streets was also a key. “Our afternoon guy Phil Tripper did his show live on location twice every week.” Online music research has been a differAlex Edwards ence-maker as well. “Little Big Town’s ‘Happy People’ was huge for us and Tim & Faith’s ‘Speak To A Girl’ performed better here than it did nationally,” says Edwards. Strategically, he also highlighted his gold category with “super hit” production before and after the songs played. “They are the same records we’ve been playing, we just used the production to make them stand out.” The station also heavily promoted Country Jam and Country Fest, along with a number of local fairs that featured concerts. WKOA/Lafayette, IN: “It was a good day,” says Nuehoff PD/morning host Mike Shamus of the station’s return to the top. “We wanted to get back to No. 1.” Their 16-week Country Cash Song Of The Day contest was the “biggest in the station’s history,” he says. While they were able to give away plenty of concert tickets, it’s their methodology that Shamus credits for the success. Contests including Jacked Up Jason (listeners had to identify backwards Jason Aldean songs), Back To Back Brad and Double Mike Shamus The Dierks (song double-plays) made on-air giveaways more “sticky,” he says. MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE Atlantic/WMN's Devin Dawson discusses his most influential music: 1. John Mayer's Continuum: I grew up on country and a lot of rock, and I played in a heavy metal band for a while. This was a lifechanging record. It helped me transition into the music I've always wanted to make: there's lyric, melody, groove, performance. It's timeless. Devin 2. Creedence Clearwater Revival: They're Dawson one of those bands where every song is a hit. It's not necessarily a country [sound] but it's this northern California kind of country, rootsy rock sound with a soul voice. And John Fogerty's voice is unreal. 3. Garth Brooks' In Pieces: I remember hearing the live version of "Ain't Going Down ('Til The Sun Comes Up)" as a kid and wanting to remember every single lyric and melody and sing along to it. There are so many amazing songs on that record. That black and red checkered album cover is burned into my mind. 4. Eric Church's Chief: That album showed me and the rest of the world that country can be rock, can be dark and raw. You press "play" at the beginning and there's no song you want to skip. And the sequencing is perfect. 5. Metallic's Master Of Puppets: An artist's third record is usually a special moment where they have it figured out and they break out. Their bass player, Cliff Burton, brought musicality to the band. It was dark and helped push my limits as a musician, as I learned those riffs. • Highly regarded music you've actually never heard: I've only heard one or two of Sturgill Simpson's songs. I look forward to sitting down and giving it the time it deserves. • "Important" music you just don't get: The Grateful Dead. I love to jam, but I'm such a lyric guy. I saw them in Nashville and the only way I knew one song had ended and another one started was the crowd started cheering. I appreciate what they've done, but it doesn't really resonate with me. • An album you listened to incessantly: Dixie Chicks' Fly was always in my mom's CD player when I was growing up. I know every word and melody from that record. • An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Ed Sheeran's "Happier." It's a damn country song. It feels like something I would write in Nashville.• • Music you'd rather not admit to enjoying: Usher. I just love his grooves and his melodies.

(continued from page 1) Is there a weekly call? Emails? I talk to the PDs when I need them or when they need me. Emails are a different story. I have been emailing a lot, but nothing that is set to a specific schedule. Are you doing any company-wide programs like iHeartMedia’s On the Verge or CBS Radio’s Launch? If our team creates something, it will be a program that all of our programmers buy into and believe will be beneficial to our

stations and our audiences. We are not going to do something just because the other radio groups are doing it. You’ve always been a passionate music guy. How does that play into this new role? My passion for music is crucial for this role. I am constantly listening to music – not just singles, but entire albums, demos and anything I can get my hands on. It helps me plan out promotions and other efforts ahead of time involving artists, songs or albums our group would benefit from. We’re lucky because all of our programmers share this passion for country music. Do you hear from label VPs and Nationals more? Same now as I did before. I have always had great relationships with them, as well as my regionals. The topics may have changed a bit now with the VPs, given my new role. What’s been the biggest surprise so far? I wouldn’t say I’ve been really surprised by much. One thing that did open my eyes a bit was when we recently took a trip to Nashville and met with the majority of the labels. When asking them what was the No. 1 way we could help them it was pretty unanimous that they wanted our support in pushing album releases. Not adds, not spins, but album sales. That was kind of surprising and another example of how the business has changed due to all the other ways people can now get music. How does the format focus impact your day-to-day at the station? The experience of my staff at 103.7 has been very important when it comes to my new role. I can trust everyone to do their jobs because they have been with me for more than 10 years. I really do think I have the best team in Country radio. What was behind the launch of 94.7 Smoke? When [President] Bruce Beasley and Justin Chase told MM Bill Schoening that we were getting a translator, I immediately had

an idea that I thought would work. I actually had this idea for a couple years, but had nowhere to put it. People in the south are extremely passionate about southern music and the southern way of life, and 94.7 Smoke is just that. You can’t listen to the station for 15 minutes without hearing a great southern song or hearing imaging that makes you feel right at home. Sounds like quite a passion project. Programming this station has been a lot of fun. Since it’s only a translator and can’t really compete from a ratings standpoint with the bigger FMs, I get to approach it completely differently and play songs that I think our listeners will enjoy. That includes a lot of Southern Rock, but also old school country like Hank Jr., Waylon and others. As well as what I call “wow” songs that even include a couple John Denver tracks. It also gives me a chance to play some songs by current Country acts that may not be a perfect fit for Country stations – Cadillac Three, Chris Stapleton and A Thousand Horses. They will have singles for sure, but they also have some great songs that fit Smoke perfectly. Then there’s Texas – Randy Rogers, Whiskey Myers – and a guy like Jason Isbell, as well as local bands with good followings in the region. The reviews have been great and I can guarantee that you have never heard a station like this! –Paul Williams
