Meet Boston’s David Corey

Named PD for Beasley’s WKLB/Boston last week, David Corey is going home to the city after more than a decade in Canada. He spoke with Country Aircheck about programming Country for the first time. CA: How did you get into radio? DC: When I was growing up here, my favorite station was Kiss 108 [Top 40 WXKS]. I just called them one day asking if they were looking for interns, came in for an interview, started interning and stayed. I worked my way up – on-air mix show DJ, Asst. MD, MD, APD and then PD. I called my favorite radio station and ended up working there for 22 years. I moved to Toronto in late 2006 and became PD for Hot AC CHUM-FM, then about a year later became VP/Programming for what became Bell Media. Did you oversee any Country stations? Yeah, I was overseeing programming for all 105 stations, of which nine were Country. Now David Corey there are 12. So even though I never programmed a Country station day-to-day, I worked with our Country programming team and got to know the format really well. As a matter of fact, I managed a country artist in Canada for about six years, which also brought me close to the format. Over that time I got to know the artists very well – not just the Canadian artists, but some from the U.S. I really started to love the format. It’s very different from what I was used to and I was so shocked to see the close working relationship between artists and radio. There was a mutual respect that you don’t generally see in other formats. So my love for Country started about seven or eight years ago. (continued on page 7)

Hunt & Company Cruise

Our radio reporters in Ohio and Indiana chip in for team coverage on the launch of Sam Hunt’s 15 in a 30 Tour featuring Maren Morris, Chris Janson and Ryan Follese. The trek opened over the weekend with shows at Blossom Music Center in between Cleveland and Akron, and at Klipsch Music Center near Indianapolis. “Opening night for the tour was a sellout,” says WQMX/Akron PD Sue Wilson. “Selling out the opening night of a tour with three fairly

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE Creative Nation/New Revolution’s Steve Moakler discusses his most influential music: 1. John Mayer: I discovered John Mayer, the guitar and songwriting, at the same time. I think he’s going to be the James Taylor of our generation. When I was first starting to write songs I was trying to be John Mayer. 2. Bruce Springsteen: My dad is from Steve Moakler New Jersey. As a kid, my dad worked from home in our basement and he listened to a lot of Bruce Springsteen. So it’s forever embedded in my heart and subconscious. As I’ve gotten older, I think he is one of the most important and impactful artists alive. 3. Eric Church: What John Mayer was to me in my teenage years, Eric Church is to me now in my 20s. I love every song he’s ever put out. He makes great albums, complete works of art. He’s creative, innovative, and breaks the rules. 4. David Gray: My family used to listen to his White Ladder album as we ate dinner pretty much every night. So it’s a really special album to me, and he’s got such a cool style. 5. U2: Bono is such an inspiring activist, and you can hear a passion to make the world a better place in his music and what he does offstage. And he is a great songwriter. • Highly regarded music you’ve never heard: I’ve never listened through an Adele album. I know the hits on the radio, though, and I really love them. • “Important” music you just don’t get: Prince is an artist I really have not gotten into. With his passing, so many people talk about Prince and his impact on them, but it hasn’t connected with me. • An album you played incessantly: The Wallflowers’ Bringing Down The Horse. I’ve worn that record out. It never gets old. • Obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Foy Vance’s “If Only You Could See Yourself Like I See You.” If you’re having a bad day – or if you’re having a good day for that matter – listen to that song. I think it’s incredibly moving. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: Katy Perry is an artist that people might be surprised to find that I love. I love her hits, like “Teenage Dream” and “Last Friday Night.”

new and one brand new artists is pretty amazing.” Production featured a multi-layered LED board and dynamic video. “The stage had lots of moving elements including video panels that moved to create some fun visual effects,” says WLHK/ Indianapolis PD/midday host Fritz Moser. Adds iHeartMedia WGAR/ Cleveland PD/afternoon host Charley Connolly, “The video screens for Sam were tilted at such unique angles that it made it seem as though he was performing in a venue within a venue. Very cozy, cool.” Maren Morris Used as a curtain of sorts, the screens raised as the band walked onstage with Hunt behind them. He opened with “Leave The Night On,” “Raised On It,” and “House Party.” “Three very strong songs in a row,” Connolly says. “’Raised On It’ was particularly incendiary.” Wilson noticed, too. “I was surprised that within the first 20 minutes of the show he did most of his big hits,” she says. “He looked like he was having so much fun, running back and forth on the stage, smiling and breaking out a lot of great moves.” In Indiana, Hunt leapt into the audience during “House Party” and did a lap around the pavilion. Hunt also showcased songs he wrote that were hits for other artists including Keith Urban’s “Cop Car,” Billy Currington’s “We Are Tonight,” Kenny Chesney’s “Come Over” and William Michael Morgan’s “I Met A Girl.” He brought a bar stool Chris Janson onstage, chatting with the audience about his country roots. “Sam remarked that growing up he couldn’t tell the difference between Madonna or Nirvana, but he did know every single Alan

Jackson song,” says WFMS/Indianapolis OM Stephen Giuttari. Hunt performed “Don’t Rock the Jukebox” and paid respects to other influences George Strait and Travis Tritt. He also brought out his openers for a run at Outkast’s “Hey Ya.” Speaking of the support, “Ryan Follese, Chris Janson and Maren Morris complimented the headliner beautifully,” Connolly says. “There was literally something musically for everyone.” Janson began with a harmonica cover of “Folsom Prison Blues.” “He made you feel like you were hanging out in the warm-up room as they tuned up before the show,” says Giuttari. Adds Wilson, “I didn’t expect him to rock like he did. I consider him a bit of a traditionalist with songs like ‘Holdin’ Her,’ but he did a punk rock version of ‘Ring Of Fire’ that was amazing.” Maren Morris’ set started with a video that told her story and about her love of music. Wilson was impressed. “You can see the confidence and growth in the past year,” she says. “Her voice is outrageously strong and good.” Moser adds, “There’s a lot of voice in that little package. Every woman around me in the pit knew every single word to her current hit ‘I Could Use A Love Song.’” Audience demographics jumped out at Wilson. “The crowd was younger leaning – pretty heavily 18-34 and lots of teens in the mix,” she says. The tour’s next stops are June 15-17 in Toronto, Detroit and Pittsburgh. –Paul Williams

FGL’s Texas Two-Step

The Smooth Tour got rolling in Dallas and Austin last weekend with Florida Georgia Line, Nelly, Chris Lane and Morgan Wallen. Our Lone Star State attendees report no lumps and plenty of heat. Much of the warmth came from the pyro that exploded when FGL hit the stage with “Anything Goes.” Cumulus KSCS/Dallas APD/MD and afternoon host Trapper John Morris says, “We were in the pit and you could feel the heat. No wonder Tyler and BK started off the show already sweating.” The headliners’ 15-song set was hit-heavy with no covers. iHeartMedia KAJA & KRPT/San Antonio APD/MD/on-air host Bree Wagner says the production does offer some surprises. “During ‘Roots,’ these cool inflatable trees popped up out of nowhere,” she says. “I’ve never seen that before.” iHeartMedia KVET/Austin APD/ MD/on-air host Bob Pickett says, overall, “It was a great way to kick off our outdoor shows in Austin. I brought my seven-year-old and we had a blast.” Cumulus KPLX & KSCS/Dallas PD Mac Daniels notes, “The Nelly portion of the show is not so kid friendly. If a guest in my

Page 5

house used that language in front of children, I would ask them to stop.” Although neither he nor his morning shows received complaints, he does advise stations along the tour to give their listeners a heads-up regarding that portion of the show. Support act Chris Lane’s set received high marks. “He has it dialed in for entertaining the 20-30 year old women,” says Daniels. Pickett adds, “He knows how to work the crowd.” Opener Morgan Wallen “really got the crowd going for his 15 minutes,” Daniels says. “The whole show moved along very fast from act to act. It was very high energy.” Lane and Wallen joined FGL on stage for “Sun Daze.” The encore was a mashup of “Hot In Herre” and “Cruise” with Nelly. “Phenomenal show,” adds Wagner. “From the moment FGL hit the stage, the production rocked.” The tour heads north to New York’s Jones Beach, Darien Lake near Buffalo, and Camden, NJ June 15-17. –Paul Williams

Chart Chat

Congrats to Brett Young, Matthew Hargis and the BMLG Records promotion staff on landing this week’s No. 1 with “In Case You Didn’t Know.” The song is Young’s second chart-topper, following “Sleep Without You.” Writers are Trent Tomlinson, Tyler Reeve, Kylie Schlienger and Young. And kudos to Shane Allen and the Columbia team for notching 47 adds for Kenny Chesney’s “All The Pretty Girls,” topping this week’s board.

Meet Boston’s David Corey

(continued from page 1)

Who was the artist you managed? Kira Isabella, who was signed to Skip Bishop’s Hits Me Up label. She’s had great success in Canada. We weren’t able to spread it over here, but she’s young and hopefully can still make that transition. Back in your WXKS days, what was your perception of country? When Shania Twain came along, as a pop guy, I started to become a bit of a country fan. My girlfriend at the time loved country music, so we started listening to it a lot throughout the mid-to-late ‘90s and it just grew and grew. Before that I wasn’t much of a fan, but I didn’t know it really. Working at Kiss, I was aware of WKLB of course, but I didn’t listen much. How does the conversation start about coming home and programming Corey with RCA’s Ryan Hurd. Country? Kind of quickly over the last month or so. My wife and I have two boys – seven and two-and-a-half – and we started to think if we’re ever going to move back to the U.S., now is the time. My seven-year-old is finishing up first grade so it will be tougher to pull him away

from friends in a year or two. We’ve talked over the years about moving back and if we did, Boston was the first city that came to mind. I started reaching out to some friends in the industry here, letting them know I was looking at a return. [Beasley/Boston Dir./ Programming] Cadillac Jack and I started talking about it a few weeks back and now I’m here. My family’s still in Toronto for another month until school ends. Who do you know in the country world? Who reaches out after this news breaks? Most of my relationships are with label people who work other formats. RCA’s Dennis Reese was probably the first person who sent me a text. Skip Bishop was probably the second. Diane Monk, obviously the Boston locals. I heard from [iHeart’s] John Ivey, who is a pop guy but loves country and spends a lot of time in Nashville. We’ve talked about country over the years and we’ve both said, “That might be a format we’d like to work in.” Espo sent me a text this morning. He’s a Pittsburgh fan, so we have that in common. How does your programming philosophy mesh with Country, and where do you think you might have to adapt? There’s no question I have some things to learn about the format. When it comes to music and recognizing talent, I listen to everything anybody sends me and rarely give an opinion on the first listen. When I do have an opinion, I’m honest with it. I feel I owe it to the industry, artists and labels to do that. I’m always looking for the best music and hoping to help break artists. Whether 500 stations are playing it or two, if I hear something I like and think it will work, I want to help lead the charge. What does it mean to you to be programming WKLB? What’s your vision? Much respect to Mike [Brophey] and Ginny [Rogers] for what they’ve done here. The station sounds great. It’s performed very well over the years. This is the third station I’ve actually day-to-day

Page 9

programmed and from Kiss to CHUM to WKLB, they’ve all been very successful heritage stations. My job is to make sure we never go backwards and we’re always trying to find ways to improve. Being a heritage station can work against you because stations need to evolve, especially in this format. Maybe more than others. In terms of the battle we have in Boston, we can’t let the audience think we’re old simply because there’s a newer station in the market. My job is to make sure we don’t sound old even though we’ve been around for a while. That means finding new ways to do things and not just doing things because it’s what worked before. I did notice a new logo and position. Was that something you put in place? No. Actually, when I got here I saw they moved from “Country 102.5” to “The New 102.5” last week. When I heard about it I asked a lot of questions of the senior team here in the building and at Beasley. We had a discussion yesterday and we just switched it back. This radio station is Country 102.5. That’s who we should be. We’re adjusting all the imaging and the logo now. Once you get a handle on the station, any thoughts about plugging into Nashville with CMA Music Festival, CMA Awards week or CRS? I want to be as entrenched in the community as possible, so yeah, you’ll see me at all of those things, I’m sure. I actually think I’m traveling to Nashville the week after [CMA Fest] for a couple of days, just to see everybody that I know and meet those that I don’t with [EVPP] Justin Chase and the team here. Final thoughts? Even in just a couple of days, I’m struck that this is the best format to program for music fans. And I’m a music fan. Day one walking into Kiss at 17 years old it was about the music. That’s my passion and country has the best music going right now. Reach Corey here. –Chuck Aly
