52nd ACMs: Radio Reacts

Country radio pros offer thoughts on last night’s (4/2) 52nd ACM Awards. WSM-FM/Nashville morning host Marty McFly: After seeing Lady A’s performance I will never use the term “band geek” again. That was great! I’m pretty sure Faith sounded amazing, but she looked so beautiful it was hard to bring me out of my “Faith haze.” They need an “I’m really damn good at everything” award for Keith Urban. WQHK/Fort Wayne PD Dave Michaels: The last few ACMs, I’ve been in the audience, and I can truthfully say that watching from home was much more comfortable. This was one of the Marty McFly better ACM Awards I’ve seen recently as far as performances went. Miranda’s performance of “Tin Man” was a highlight, as was Lady A’s “You Look Good.” My wife really liked the Backstreet Boys at the end. I really like the artists that thanked Country radio. KKBQ/Houston Dir./Operations Johnny Chiang: I thought the show was very well produced and executed. The pacing was terrific – never felt like three hours to me. My favorite parts were the Lady A incorporation of the UNLV marching band and of course Dave Michaels the FGL collaboration with the Backstreet Boys. WRBT/Harrisburg MD/mornings Nancy Ryan: Lady Antebellum literally blew me away! Amazing energy to start and then the surprise addition of Johnny Chiang another set of horns was a jaw-drop. We spoke to Brett Eldredge on Saturday and he promised Vegas style “different” and he delivered. Loved every second of it. The sheer joy of the Brothers Osborne jumping up onstage to accept their award ... Tim Nancy Ryan and Faith’s duet, the passionate kiss at the end ... (continued on page 7)

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE Play It Again's Maggie Rose discusses her most influential music: 1. Paul McCartney: I saw him in Nashville and obviously my expectations were super high, but he exceeded them. He's responsible for all these melodies that are ingrained in my brain. And he played an hour longer. He was like, "Nashville, you know we gotta go home at some point," towards the end of the show. That was very inspiring. Maggie Rose 2. Saint Paul And The Broken Bones: Seeing him come onstage with the glasses ... at the time he was a little bit of a nerdy looking fella. He opened his mouth – and it sounds cheesy, but my eyes started welling up with tears because I was like, "What do you know?" I had expectations about him sounding a certain way and then his voice blew my mind. 3. Jason Isbell's "Elephant": That song [made me feel] like, "I don't know how to do anything. I shouldn't be here." He talks about something really heavy, like dealing with cancer, in the most poetic but conversational way. It just takes you there. 4. Linda Ronstadt: She made music for herself. She drifted between country and rock and she was her own person. And her voice. No one can duplicate what she was doing. 5. Van Morrison's "Into The Mystic": This song is a fullbody experience to me. I will always stop what I'm doing to take a listen to it if it comes on. • Highly regarded music you've never heard: The Band is one of my husband Austin's absolute favorite bands, and I hate to admit I only know some of their well-known works. I should do a little homework. • "Important" music you just don't get: New Wave. I love the Pixies, but I didn't really get the industrial type of sound. It just sounded dark to me. • An album you listened to incessantly: I really loved Born and Raised by John Mayer. It was recorded beautifully. The writing was really descriptive and direct. • Obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Them Vibes are a Nashville band and they have this song called "Mamma's Gotta Secret," and it's so awesome. It reminds me of a modern-day Led Zeppelin production. • Music you'd rather not admit to enjoying: I love Electronic Dance Music and I'm not apologizing for listening to Top 40. I love me some Nick Jonas. He can sing higher than I can sometimes.

On Feb. 2, 2015, Luke Bryan’s “I See You” became the sixth No. 1 from his Crash My Party, setting a new record for chart-toppers from a single album. Now, he’s done it again as “Fast” becomes the sixth song from Kill The Lights to reach the chart pinnacle. Congrats to Luke, Royce Luke Bryan Risser, Bobby Young, David Friedman and the extended Capitol, UMG/Nashville and Red Light team on doubling down on a milestone. Songwriters are Bryan, Rodney Clawson and Luke Laird. Cheers! (continued from page 1) Reba’s moving performance ... and FGL/BSB had everybody on their feet dancing (everybody but Newman). It was fast moving and fun. WLHK/Indianapolis morning host Dave O’Brien: Loved the show! From the high-energy performances by Carrie and Keith, Lady Antebellum and Brett Eldredge to the strippeddown but captivating performances by Miranda and Maren Morris, it ran the gamut of styles and emotions, just like Country music should. I love the new Brothers Osborne, Old Dominion, Dave O’Brien Thomas Rhett/Maren Morris, Chris Stapleton, Lady Antebellum and Little Big Town. Cole Swindell and Dierks Bentley were loose and having fun on their duet and Tim and Faith could not have given us a sweeter moment with their performance and genuine delight at the end of it. Acceptance speeches were short, real and heartfelt, and the hosts did another great job. I liked their pictures from around Vegas, particularly fishing at the Bellagio and joining Cirque. WJVC/Nassau VP/Programming Phathead: Top performances go to Lady Antebellum, FGL/ BSB, and Keith/Carrie. Keith Urban is my everything! He will always be Album and Entertainer winner after this run with Ripcord, even if he doesn’t have the trophies. It felt like the Thomas Rhett coming out party with that Male Vocalist Phathead Trophy. Huge moment for him! Cool moment of the night was watching Big & Rich dancing in the crowd, knowing they continue to bring the party. Taste of Country Nights host Sam Alex: The Florida Georgia Line and Backstreet Boys performance was the most energy I’ve felt in any awards show I’ve attended. I Sam Alex really liked Lady Antebellum’s twist of having the UNLV Marching band join them for “You Look Good.” The simplicity of Miranda Lambert’s performance of “Tin Man” was so powerful. cracking up. Really dug Lady A’s performance. So fun watching everyone lose their shit when Backstreet Boys started singing. BK and Tyler doing the choreography was the icing on the cake. Performance of the night, hands down – Miranda Lambert. I first saw her do “Tin Man” at Joe’s Bar when she kicked off her tour. Cried then. Cried last night. WRBT/Harrisburg MD/mornings Newman: Thomas Rhett with Maren Morris killed it. His speeches were sincere and heartfelt. There were some tough categories. I was disappointed some awards were announced before the show. Overall, this was the best awards show I’ve had the privilege to attend. The opening was awesome, and Dierks and Luke were entertaining as hosts. I told Nancy I didn’t dance [to the Backstreet Boys] Newman when I played them as a current artist either ... so at least I’m consistent! KSCS & KPLX/Dallas PD Mac Daniels: Miranda killed it with a country song and a great performance. Keith Urban continues to overwhelm and be underappreciated. Need better writers for the hosts. Oh, and great performance by Tim and Faith! Judging by the performances last night, the next big trend in Country Mac Daniels will be collaborations. [Vocal event] will be a competitive category. KYGO/Denver morning host Tracy Dixon: Miranda Lambert’s performance ... wow! Beautiful, vulnerable and pure talent. The year of Thomas Rhett. Nice guys don’t finish last in this case. Slayed it in his performance of “Craving You” with future superstar Maren Morris. Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood started a full on Tracy Dixon dance party in my living room. And could it get any better than seeing Tim McGraw busting those dance moves to FGL and the Backstreet Boys? WXTU/Philadelphia MD/afternoons Mark Razz: I am always amazed at how much respect the artists have for their wives. That’s evident in Thomas Rhett’s “Die A Happy Man,” which he was inspired to write for his wife Lauren Gregory. Keith Urban made eye contact with Nicole Kidman during the performance of “The Fighter.” Tim McGraw and Faith Hill sizzled during “Speak To A Girl.” Another big moment was when Sam Hunt surprised HanMark Razz nah Lee Fowler by serenading her during “Body Like A Back Road,” and finally, Jason Aldean thanking his wife, Brittany Kerr, during his acceptance speech for Entertainer. Highlights were Dierks and Luke performing with Joe Walsh to honor the late Chuck Berry with “Johnny B. Goode,” Lady Antebellum, Thomas Rhett and Maren Morris, and Miranda Lambert’s vulnerable “Tin Man.” KCYY/San Antonio morning co-host Beth Chandler: Going to the ACMs for the first time was definitely a bucket list thing for me. I grew up watching the show on TV so being in the audience actually seeing it was a dream come true. Favorite part of the night was FGL/BSB.
