Market Analysis: Brewtown Battle

Clouds hovering over the lake, smoke rising from chimneys, Harleys being crafted, three rivers flowing, hops and barley coming together in an ice-cold mug, a statue of The Fonz, foam cheeseheads, the open roof at Miller Park and a good ole fashion hand-to-hand Country radio clash. Welcome to Milwaukee, where heritage iHeartMedia WMIL has been experiencing a direct attack from Scripps WKTI since May 2015. But first, some backstory. Over the previous five years, Saga Classic Country WZBK, then-Clear Channel Classic Kerry Wolfe Country WOKY-AM and Kettle Moraine Classic Country WTKM-AM all tried unsuccessfully to take a piece of the format pie in this strong Country market. The latter two ranked 29th and 25th, respectively, in their last book – October 2013. (Note: All ratings cited are 6+, courtesy of Nielsen Audio.) The last mainstream Country attempt was NextMedia’s WEXT, which flipped out of the format in 2005 after being sold. Fast-forward to April 2015 when WMIL posted a 9.5 share and cume of 438,700, continuing its No. 1 ranking in Nielsen Audio . The following month, WKTI launched Country. Almost two years later, WMIL registered a 5.7 (6t) and cume of 322,500 in its most recent PPM monthly. WKTI posted a 3.1 (13) and cume of 241,900. (See graph page 11) The good news: The market’s format share grew from Tom 8.0 in 2015 to 9.0 in 2016. ACM Vegas: Reworked Remotes For many in the radio, label and artist community, ACM Awards radio remotes are familiar enough to do in their sleep. Anyone snoozing this year will find themselves sleepwalking to an empty room, however, as the traditional MGM Grand location is no more. And that’s not the only change.

OFF THE RECORD: Steve Moakler Creative Nation/New Revolution’s Steve Moakler puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up in Pittsburgh listening to pop and rock stations, and when I went to church with my grandmother on Sundays we’d always listen to the Country station, WDSY/Pittsburgh. Steve Moakler The first time I heard myself on the radio, I was writing and got a text from a friend saying, “You’re on the radio right now.” My co-writers and I ran outside, climbed in my truck and drove around the block a few times and took it in. It was such a thrill. The first day of my radio tour I was with my promotion guy, Joe Schuld. We were getting ready to board a plane in Atlanta and Joe realized he left his wallet and cell phone on our last plane. We had 15 minutes and he said, “I gotta go.” I stood at the gate talking to them long enough to keep them from closing that door, because I knew if I got to where we were going without him, I would’ve been completely lost. He made it back in time and was completely sweaty, head to toe, wiping his head off with cocktail napkins. I bought him a beer on the plane even though it was only 11am. It was quite a start to the whole radio tour. I would love to have dinner with Abraham Lincoln. There’s this thing called an Enneagram personality test. You get a number, one through nine, and I’m a nine. Abraham Lincoln was also a nine and we’re peacemakers. He was involved in a lot of conflict, and I’d like to know how a peacemaker does that so well. And I would order Chicken Parmesan with a side of spaghetti because that’s my favorite meal. My last impulse buy was a gas station hot dog. It’s one of the safest things you could buy because they’re always cooked. So I’ve been known to leap into the crossfire and get one every now and then. I would love to be stuck in Omaha, Nebraska. On my first-ever tour, my first stop was Omaha and I played at this bar for nobody. But I went into the welcome center, and I didn’t know this, but there was a little article about me in the newspaper. The guy at the welcome center asked me to sign his newspaper. The town just stole my heart. I love the people there. I always feel like I’m not ready to leave every time I’m there.

Presented again by Cumulus’ Westwood One, this year’s remotes will be held next Friday and Saturday (3/31-4/1) at T-Mobile Arena, site of this year’s show and rehearsals, and roughly a block from the MGM host hotel. (Read ACM CEO Pete Fisher’s take on the new venue, as well as updated plans for honoring radio winners here.) “Everyone is familiar with how we run our many ‘radio row’ events,” says Cumulus/Westwood One SVP/Content & Programming Mike McVay. “What we’ve done this year is add a stage area for a live performance element. “Not only are all the biggest stars in the format as well as the up-and-coming artists coming through, but having performances at the event is good for programmers and air talent in attendance.” Performing at Thursday’s orientation are Valory’s Delta Rae, Friday is Broken Bow’s Walker McGuire, and Curb takes Saturday with Mo Pitney, Lee Brice and Jerrod Niemann. Stations will be able to post audio and video to social Mike McVay media, and use limited portions of audio from the performances on-air if they’re inclined. And speaking of stations, fewer will be participating this year. “We have limited the number of radio stations so everyone can get a little more time with each artist,” McVay says. Capped at 25 stations – down 10-15 from years past – participation still includes a wide cross-section of radio companies. Cumulus, of course, as well as CBS Radio, Alpha, Emmis, Townsquare, Cox, Mt. Wilson, Bonneville, Federated and Scripps are all participating. (iHeartCountry stations participated in a group-wide flyaway contest sending 10 winners and their guests on a four-day trip to the awards and associated events.) Westwood One is also offering audio to stations prior to and after the show, a one-hour red carpet pre-show, a one-hour post-show and a three-hour “broadcast companion” during the awards. “It’s not an actual simulcast of the telecast,” McVay says. “Imagine commentating on a parade and featuring different bits and pieces along the way.” Nash Nights Live’s Shawn Parr and Elaina Smith will host. Parr, of course, is also the voice of the ACM Awards, so he’ll be pulling double duty. With 40 artists scheduled for Friday and 45 for Saturday, a new location and artist performances, this year’s remotes promise excitement. No sleepwalking allowed. –Chuck Aly

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE In2une’s Caroline Jones discusses her most influential music: 1. Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors: It’s a masterpiece of musicianship and songwriting. I think the best music is simultaneously artistic and has a perspective but is also really commercial and relatable – and that to me is the pinnacle. 2. Keith Urban: I admire that he’s a lead Caroline Jones guitar player, that his guitar playing is almost like a second voice. I love his songwriting and the fan base that he built live. 3. Hunter Hayes: I’m kind of a sucker for people who play their own instruments and are involved in the songwriting and production of their music, because I am. I really look up to that and try to learn from those people. 4. Vince Gill: He’s such a class act. I’ve observed the people in Nashville who have really long, successful careers, and have been able to maintain them for decades. I noticed that they all have this kindness, humility and artistic curiosity about them. Vince Gill is at the top of the list. 5. Patty Griffin: She’s one of the best female songwriters of all time. She has a haunting voice, and I think she’s a bit underrated. • Highly regarded music you’ve never heard: Stevie Ray Vaughan. I’m a huge guitar player fan, and there’s a lot guitar players that I love and listened to their whole catalog. Stevie Ray is just one I haven’t yet gotten around to delving into. That’s next for me. • “Important” music you just don’t get: Probably heavy metal, and some intense rap. It’s not my personal taste. • An album you listened to incessantly: John Mayer’s Continuum. It’s just a well-put-together album. To me, that’s his best work. There’s soul, blues, pop, rock, and every song is great. It’s not easy to make an album that people want to listen to the entire thing over and over. • Obscure or non country song everyone should listen to right now: I love Ed Sheeran’s “Castle On The Hill.” It’s nostalgic, the lyrics are really touching, and the production is epic. It’s kind of like U2/Bruce Springsteen vibe, and it’s great. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I’m a huge One Direction fan, but I don’t really consider it a guilty pleasure. I’m proud of it.

iHeartMedia/Portland flipped current-based KFBW-HD3 “Tailgate Country” to Classic Country as “The Legend.” CMA’s 2017 International Awards honorees are Bob Harris (International Country Broadcaster), The Shires (Jeff Walker Global Country Artist Award) and Richard Wooten (Wesley Rose International Media Achievement Award). Music Choice will feature more than 75 hours of 52nd ACM Awards-focused programming through the April 2 awards show. Exegan Music Group, which includes Silverado Records, has rebranded as Exegan Media & Entertainment, The company has expanded from label ownership and catalog management with the recent purchase of website countrypusher.com. Clay Walker will host his 8th Annual Chords Of Hope benefit concert June 6 at Nashville’s 3rd & Lindsley. Proceeds go to the MS Center at Vanderbilt Medical Center. The event has raised more than $200,000 to date.

Wolfe’s solution: The updated Ridder, Scott & Shannen featuring former afternooner Shaun Ridder, longtime morning co-host Scott Dolphin and one-time promotions intern Shannen Oesterreich. “Shannen got in a production room on her own and put together an audition,” Wolfe says. “We added her on a limited basis from 6-8a and then moved her to full time.” The rest of the WMIL line-up includes iHeart’s St. Louis-based talent Billy Greenwood in middays, the company’s Tige & Daniel at night and AfterMidnite with Cody Alan overnights. Wolfe is currently looking for a new afternoon host. Over at WKTI, VP/GM Tom Langmyer is on point, though his search for the right programmer continues. “We’re looking for a high-level, extremely competitive, tireless leader with a winning track record as a real program director – a strategist,” he

Musically, WKTI’s library is spinning a bit more than 400 titles. Six songs are in power rotation at about 60 spins a week. Their next category has 12 tunes rotating in the 35-spin range. The mix is 38% current titles, 30% recurrent and 32% gold. Similarly, WMIL’s max spin category is six songs in the 55play range, five sub powers and six mediums. Total titles are just more than 400 and all dayparts are programmed locally with the exception of overnights, running 44% current, 32% recurrent and 24% gold.

Both stations are commercial free for a portion of weekday mornings: WMIL 8-10am and WKTI 9am-noon. And WKTI is pushing a “more music” position with a website lead story offering a count of songs played the prior day. A recent example: WKTI: 356, WMIL: 322. Page 11 on, no matter the time of day,” Langmyer says. “This is our home, but we still must earn our place here.” And that place is more than what goes out over the transmitter. “We want to connect with local listeners in real time, across multiple platforms,” he adds. Wolfe may have some out-of-market dayparts, but he isn’t conceding anything. And that’s where his long-tenured relationships come into play. “We have partnered with the biggest country night club – Red Rock Saloon – as well as Summerfest, the Wisconsin State Fair and The Rave, which also brings in a lot of country acts. We recently sold out our Class Of ... event in one minute, bringing in Maren Morris, Brett Young, Tucker Beathard and Jackie Lee.” Further, Wolfe views corporate reach as a source of strength. “It’s been great to have other iHeart PD’s listening to the stations and providing feedback along with the research our company can provide,” he says, noting the battle for country fans’ hearts and minds is a marathon, not a sprint. “We don’t fight dirty, but we protect our turf,” he says.

Langmyer is mindful of the task before his team. “We know creating and growing a new station is a challenge,” he says. “But since we’re doing things differently – being a truly local station with live talent around the clock – we also know it takes even more of an investment, a greater commitment, more dedication and hard work.
