Programmer Booked For Agency Work

If there’s precedent for CAA’s hire of former iHeartMedia/ Nashville SVP/Programming Michael Bryan (CAT 1/30), it’s not readily apparent. Country Aircheck spoke to Bryan about his still-developing role, getting closer to the music discovery process and his new view of radio. CA: What is this new job? MB: The basic idea is to dig even deeper into the offerings we have for clients. Based on my experience in developing air talent and also how keenly aware I am of the music discovery process, I’m here to help young and emerging artists develop their careers on a deeper level. It’s an incubator in some ways and something nobody else offers in this space. The good news is it’s a blank canvas and I have the opportunity to build a department that serves our clients in all genres. Doing what, specifically? Michael Bryan Each client relationship is different. One might be focused on the A&R process and picking the best songs. Another might be how to positively affect social media. Another client might need media training – help learning how to interview. So it’s a broad suite of offerings. Is this primarily for artists who are pre-label? Not necessarily. It just depends where we can identify areas to help lift a client’s career. I’ve already had some great conversations on the label side, and they’re all looking for strength in the overall team. If you look at the artist’s career as a board of directors, this just gives [CAA] a deeper, bigger seat at the table. And all these conversations happen within the team, no one person decides, it’s collaborative. Could this be viewed as an (continued on page 9)

Legendary Night For Crook & Chase

For 34 years and counting, Lorianne Crook and Charlie Chase have been championing country music artists and entertaining fans. Last night (2/20) it was their turn to sit back and enjoy the show. The longtime co-hosts were surprised with the Bob Kingsley Living Legend Award during an intimate celebration held on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry House. Opry Entertainment President Steve Buchanan said the event has raised more than $120,000 for the Opry Trust Fund since its inception four years ago. Colleagues including radio host Cathy Martindale turned out to toast the duo best known as Crook & Chase. “They’ve spent a lifetime knowing everything that goes on in Nashville,” she said,

“but tonight they didn’t have a clue.” CMA’s Sarah Trahern took the podium to discuss how their show inspired her love of country music. Television personality Kelly Sutton recalled one of her first jobs with Crook and Chase. “They could teach a master class on making a show look effortless,” she said. Performers Trace Adkins and Tracy Lawrence both thanked the duo for their artist-friendly attitude. Offering his song “Find Out Who Your Friends Are,” Lawrence said the Crook & Chase co-hosts were supportive through the ups and downs of his career. Also taking the stage were Moe Bandy, John Conlee, Billy Dean, Tareva Henderson, John Michael Montgomery, Ricky Skaggs, T.G. Sheppard, Doug Stone, Tanya Tucker, The Whites and Mark Wills. When Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood presented trophies to the honorees, Brooks recalled that they took “some pretty hard stances in my name, so I didn’t have to fight for myself. That’s a wonderful gift to give somebody.” He continued, “It’s all about promoting country music, and I don’t think country music would have become what it was in the ‘90s without you two.” Yearwood agreed, “You can’t imagine having anything to do with this business and not walking through those doors.” Producer Jim Owens was key to the show’s success. In 1982, Crook and Chase were hosting separate television programs when he paired them for the 1983 launch of This Week In Country Music on TNN. It became the first national country news and entertainment program, and grew to being taped in front of a live studio audience. Video clips from the show included a who’s-who of country stars (Reba McEntire, Miranda Lambert, Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum, Luke Bryan) as well as guests from outside the country realm. For example, Richard Simmons to Charlie Chase: “If you show me your underwear, I’ll show you mine.” And infamous fashion critic Mr. Blackwell to Lorianne Crook: “You look like an airline stewardess.” Numerous friends submitted video greetings, including McEntire, Charlie Daniels, Dolly Parton, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, Clint Black, Toby Keith and Chris Young, who sent in a clip of his appearance on the show at age 17. Blake Shelton offered a friendly, “Don’t get hurt, but I’d like to see you end up in jail before the night’s over.” Ricky Van Shelton recalled Chase

pranking him by pulling down the stage curtain. Storme Warren said, “You’re one of a kind—the two of you.” Accepting, Crook said, “This is an absolutely unbelievable night. It’s you trusting us and sending us your artists. It’s been such a beautiful dance, all of us working together in this wonderful industry.” She added that she and husband Owens purchased the rights to TNN and are working to revive it. Chase added, “Since we met, there was a chemistry there. We don’t try to analyze it, we just do it. It’s a lot of fun. Lorianne and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts.” Crook and Chase are members of the Country Radio Hall Of Fame, and their syndicated radio show, The Crook & Chase Countdown, is in its 27th year. –Sarah Skates

Congrats to Little Big Town, Royce Risser, Bobby Young, David Friedman and the Capitol promotion team on scoring this week’s No. 1 with “Better Man.” The song is the first single from the band’s album The Breaker, out Friday. And kudos to Katie Bright and the WMN staff on notching 48 adds for Blake Shelton’s “Every Time I Hear Little Big Town That Song,” topping this week’s board.

KKNU/Eugene, OR’s Barrett, Fox & Berry raised $2,150 as part of their recent annual Valentine’s Day auction of professionally guided fishing trips. The money helps restock local rivers with steelhead trout. Telemedia’s WGRX/Fredericksburg, VA will launch Got Your Six, a locally produced two-hour weekly program paying tribute to active duty, reserve and veteran members of the military and their families. The station’s Zach Fox will host Sundays 6-8pm. A celebration of life with live music, food, beer and wine will be held for the late Holly Dunn Mar. 30 at 6pm at BMI’s Nashville office. There is a minimum donation of $25 and 100 percent of the proceeds go to research ovarian carcinosarcoma.

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE Big Label/Thirty Tigers’ Aaron Watson discusses his most influential music: 1. Guy Clark’s Old No. 1: Listening to this record or any Guy Clark album is like going to school and getting a lesson from the master. 2. Brandon Heath’s Blue Mountain: This may be considered a Christian album, but it’s more country than anything I’ve heard in years. It was a breath of fresh air for me, and Aaron Watson I love me some songs about Jesus! 3. Robert Earl Keen’s No. 2 Live Dinner: This is Texas with a capital “T,” from the songwriting down to the venue it was recorded in. John T. Floore Country Store is where Willie Nelson once played every week and he apparently lived there at one point. I’ve played stadiums and big festivals, but nothing compares to the energy that comes with playing a packed house at a dancehall in Texas. You can feel it on this album. 4. Gram Parsons’ Grievous Angel: Lots of fiddle, steel guitar and Emmylou Harris! 5. Neil Young’s Harvest: “Old man look at my life; I’m a lot like you were.” Enough said, right? • “Important” music you just don’t get: My little girl Jolee Kate loves the soundtrack for Frozen. I’ve listened to it about a million times and I still don’t get it. Then again, I’ll keep singing it at the top of my lungs if it makes that sweet girl smile. • An album you played incessantly: The Beatles’ White Album. I love the diversity of this album and the fact that it has 30 songs. Folk, rock, pop and country songs. And I guess you could say “Helter Skelter” might be the first heavy metal song, too. • Obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “You Can’t Roller Skate In A Buffalo Herd” by Roger Miller. • One item in your music collection you’d rather not admit to enjoying: Wham!

Programmer Booked For Agency Work (continued from page 1) agency offering more to its artists in the same way management companies have expanded over the last 10-15 years? Absolutely. It’s really just a deeper level of commitment and more services. What I’ve learned crossing the fence is there are so many services already being offered. This seems like a no-brainer and almost like in-house consulting. You’ll also be working with radio? There are radio concerts across America in every genre of music and it’s a tough battle as a programmer to figure out what’s going to work. And not all that’s out there makes sense for artists. I want to make sure CAA has the ability to help PDs in ways that haven’t been thought about in the past. Helping them identify what talent is available so they don’t have to go through five sources, as well as working with larger broadcasters on creating and developing platforms that might generate revenue on both sides. Those ideas are on the drawing board. From the other side, sitting in meetings during my first month here I’ve been shocked how many times iHeart, CBS, Entercom and the other companies are brought up as we look for ways to partner with them. Being able to educate in the room how it works from an insider perspective has been eye opening for some of the people here and pretty valuable. When and how did this idea even get started? The process started quite a while back. I went through Leadership Music and had my eyes open for career possibilities beyond radio. I knew at a certain point it would make sense to take the next step. I developed several relationships with people from CAA over the years, continued to be in those rooms and opened the discussion. I looked at the label space, management and really found the perfect marriage of skills I have to apply in a way that hasn’t been done. To do that with a company as broad as CAA was incredibly exciting. Why were you looking to get out of radio? I was just really excited for a new opportunity and a change. I’ve been in radio my whole life and achieved every goal I set for myself. I started to have different dreams. What I miss are the people, of course. There are so many great people in radio and if

there’s any sad part to this it’s not getting to see them on an every day basis. But I wake up every day energized and excited. There are so many opportunities in this company. I’ve spent the last several years focused on country and will continue to do that, but there’s the rock department here in Nashville, festivals – every where I look I see new opportunities. I haven’t seen anything that has felt limiting. How does your radio background apply in this new role? I got to the end of the first day of the Leadership Music program and realized, maybe for the first time, just how much choosing a song and single impacts so many different people. It’s not just the artist and promotion team, it’s the manager, business manager, publisher, attorney – everyone. So much goes into any given project and from that moment forward I was a lot more careful with my thought process. Sometimes as a programmer I would go, “I don’t like that. Not a hit. Move on.” Now when I look at that, I have the perspective of how many people that touches. So when I’m working with artists, my understanding of what programmers have to see could be the direction that helps make sure they don’t swing and miss. What would you say about where radio is and where it’s going that maybe you couldn’t when you were in it day-to-day? I still love radio. I got into for the music discovery and the best moments I had as a programmer were loving a song, watching a career blow up and knowing you helped someone achieve a dream. As long as those opportunities continue to exist, and they do, radio will continue to thrive. I wanted to be closer to the music and that discovery process in helping to grow talent. My best friends in the world are in radio and I have great relationships at all levels, so I’ll still be watching ratings, keeping up with the news and doing all those things us radio nerds do. I’m second generation radio and my Dad still does all that stuff to this day, so I’ll never be disconnected. And there are several key people who shaped my career and gave me opportunities along the way, and they know who they are. If I could say anything, it would be a huge “thank you” to everyone who took a shot on me, listened to me and taught me. I wouldn’t have this opportunity without them.
