CRS: Why Wait?

Choosing the most impactful annual event in the broader country music industry could be quite a debate. When it comes to individual professional development, however, Country Radio Seminar has no equal (unless said individual is up for, say, Entertainer of the Year or similar). For anyone still debating attending CRS 2017 (Feb. 2224), here are just a few of the reasons to register right now. “The main thing has always been the content,” says CRS Exec. Dir. Bill Mayne. “The magic of CRS is that an entire industry comes together – it’s not just a radio thing – and they come truly ready to engage. That’s what separates this from an awards show week or music festival where conversations may strike up. Here, everyone comes with that mindset – networking, learning, having a great time and getting a preview of the music coming for the rest of the year.” Mayne urges prospective attendees not to overlook the music aspect of the gathering. “In the old days the complaint was it was all about entertainment – just pushing acts on everyone. Bill Mayne It can be that, but for people who have to make decisions about music, seeing and hearing the talent is a big deal. You can effectively and efficiently get more business done in three days than you could in two years running all over the country.” If inspiration is sought, the keynote by Olympian Scott Hamilton should provide plenty. As a world class athlete who has faced multiple health challenges, Hamilton will share his story of overcoming adversity in a session moderated by CRB Board President Charlie Morgan. Alabama’s Randy Owen kicked off Country Cares in 1989 and, as is customary, he closed the most recent St. Jude Country Cares Seminar in Memphis with “Angels Among Us” Saturday night (1/14), backed by Songwriters’ Dinner cohorts Darius Rucker, John Oates and Charles Kelley. In between, more than $700 million has been raised to aid St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s mission, one this year’s attendees were able to see up close. “The hope is station attendees take their own ‘St. Jude story’ back to their market,” explains Scott ALSAC [St. Jude’s fundraising arm] Assoc. OFF THE RECORD: Caroline Jones In2une’s Caroline Jones puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to WHTZ-FM/New York City. When I was 17 I fell in love with country music when I went to Nashville and saw a show at The Bluebird Cafe. I was awestruck that there was an entire genre built around the craft of authentic storytelling. So Caroline Jones then, I delved into the history of country. I listened to SiriusXM’s Willie’s Roadhouse all through college to get an education on country. One of my favorite radio tour memories was visiting KKBQ/Houston’s Johnny Chiang. He’s been such a champion of “Tough Guys.” For him to be so welcoming to an unsigned artist, it speaks to his pure love for music. And I’ve noticed that across Country radio. My favorite person to travel with is my manager, Ric Wake. We co-produced this album together. We’re partners in crime and I appreciate that he travels with me. And he’s hysterical. I try to get good coffee everywhere I go because I’m kind of a coffee fiend. Truck stop coffee is hit-and-miss. I would love to have dinner with Vince Gill. He’s one of my heroes and such a kind, humble person. And I’d order roast chicken. My music is storytelling-based country pop. I write all my songs by myself. I also played all the instruments on this record, except bass and drums. It’s uplifting, joyful and fun. My last impulse buy was a Little Martin guitar. Because I’m in cars so often on radio tour, I wanted to have a guitar small enough that I can play it in the car. I’m not very redneck, but my dad is. (laughs) The last redneck thing we did was, I went on a quail hunt with him in Georgia and watched him shoot quail. I wish I’d written Willie Nelson’s “Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain,” written by Fred Rose in the ‘40s. The title has so much depth and emotion. It’s heart-wrenchingly beautiful. It truly changed my life. I don’t have a least favorite interview question. I know that sounds boring, but I really appreciate every question someone thinks to ask me, and the fact that I get to do interviews. I’d love to be stuck in Seattle. I haven’t been there yet, but I’ve heard I would love it because it has a really cool art scene and beautiful nature.

“It could have been a family that touched them, something they saw in the hospital, or hearing about something from one of the St. Jude doctors or researchers. St. Jude is truly a hospital without walls, where no family ever pays, and that is what I hope resonated with them.” The seminar mixes hospital tours and information, best practices and moments of deep emotion with fun, music and, ultimately, hope. The hospital’s resident music therapist Amy Love explained how music is useful in working with everyone from toddlers to teens. She also talked about Heartbeat Songs, where a patient near the end of life has their heartbeat recorded and set to music. “I’ve had really sweet songs and I’ve had ‘Gangnam Style’ [and] heavy metal,” she said, drawing laughter. Survivor Tayde Cruz-Dodds and St. Jude nurses told uplifting and heart-wrenching stories. “Miracles happen every day at St. Jude,” said Cruz-Dodds, now an ALSAC employee. “In my case, it’s happened a few times.” As to what she shares with current patients she added, “I tell them every day to have faith, because that should be the last thing that dies.” According to a couple of rookie attendees, if giving attendees an experience that resonated was the goal, mission accomplished. For WMN regional Lou Ramirez, a first-time attendee despite being a founder of No Shave November, the trip was “a life-changing experience. I always knew it was a special place that looked after ailing children, but the amount of care that goes to all family members during treatment was inspiring.” “I’m usually pretty good with words, but I’m struggling to express just how profound Lou Ramirez my visit [was],” says KTPK/Topeka, KS Content Mgr./afternooner Tim Goodrich. “We laughed, we cried, we learned, and we all were pulled deeper into the mission of St. Jude founder Danny Thomas: ‘No child should die in the dawn of life.’” As for his “St. Jude moment,” Goodrich explains: “The one that hit me was what I call the ‘immersion theater’ where kids – through the magic of real-time interactive audio/video Tim Goodrich – go on adventures ranging from herding horses in the Australian outback to digging for dinosaur bones with a live archaeologist answering the child’s questions. St. Jude uses this incredible technology to virtually take the children from the world of fighting to survive, to the world beyond the walls of the hospital. It moved me greatly.”

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE Stoney Creek's Adam Craig discusses his most influential music: 1. Tim McGraw: In 1994 I saw him at a county fair. That's where the dream of being a singer started for me. He's the reason. I love his voice and the songs he records. They were the soundtrack to the '90s for me. 2. Keith Urban, Neon Circus Tour, 2000: He opened the show with a Adam Craig 20-minute set. It blew me away. I saw a front man come out with a guitar. He slayed that guitar. The next few years of my life, I quit my friends, I quit everything and focused on guitar as much as I possibly could. He's the reason I know how to play guitar. 3. "I Didn't Ask And She Didn't Say" (written by Van Stephenson, Reese Wilson, Tony Martin): Back when I was too afraid to ask girls out, I loved this Tim McGraw song. It's still one of my favorite songs ever. 4. Tim McGraw's Set This Circus Down: This album is hit after hit after hit. It's a deserted island record, definitely. 5. Keith Urban at The Gorge Amphitheatre, George, WA: My mom and I saw him there and it changed my life. I've actually played there now, which is so crazy to me. • Highly regarded music you've actually never heard: Grunge music. Even though I grew up in the shadows of the home of Grunge, it wasn't my jam. It didn't help me get through anything or make me happy when I was sad. • "Important" music you just don't get: Jazz. I feel like it shoots right over my head. I'm not a good enough mathematician to understand Jazz. There's a lot of counting that goes on. • An album you listened to incessantly: Frankie Ballard's El Rio. Holy smokes! There's not a bad song on it. • An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: "Parachute" by Train. That song is awesome. • Music you'd rather not admit to enjoying: '80s Hair Band music. I love that stuff and I'd gladly admit it.

Ramirez reports being overwhelmed at the depth of the experience and can’t point to a single moment, but he was present for someone else’s. He along with WMN’s Kristen Williams and Country Aircheck’s April Johnson were on a tour with St. Jude rookie Cole Swindell when a patient’s mother recognized the singer. Visiting with the woman and her daughter, Swindell learned that the woman’s husband and father of her three daughters had recently passed from colon cancer. Well before the chance meeting, all three girls had expressed to their mother the desire to have “You Should Be Here” played at their weddings as a tribute to their late father. The meeting was emotional for all present. Hinshelwood’s moment, this year anyway, was when “Angels Among Us” award honoree Darius Rucker surprised the Songwriters’ Dinner crowd with a $50,000 donation from ACM Lifting Lives. “The eruption in applause from the room was incredible,” he says. Individual experiences, like Swindell’s, can be even more powerful, however. “I do love the look on our [attendees] faces when they hear from a patient or patient family about their St. Jude journey,” Hinshelwood says. –Chuck Aly

EMI Nashville’s Eric Church quickly proved the title of his Holdin’ My Own Tour on opening night last Friday (1/13) at the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, NE, with a 37-song repertoire spanning two sets and no opening act. KZKX OM/BM Rob Kelley and KFGE OM/PD Steve Albertsen and MD Nikki Oswald were there to experience it. “It’s a phenomenal show,” says Kelley. “You want to make sure you’re there ahead of time, because he comes out and tears right into it.” Albertsen reports Church did 15 songs in the first set and 22 in Eric Church the second. “He had a 20-minute intermission where he said he was “parenting” with his son via a walkie-talkie, which was really cute,” adds Oswald. All three were impressed with the no-frills stage that put the focus on the fans and the music. Instead of a traditional T-shaped catwalk, Church’s was circular, with a pit below that offered upclose, unobstructed views. “The energy of the crowd was incredible,” says Oswald. “You could tell Eric was excited to play. But the crowd – we were ready. We fed off of each other.”

Albertsen names ‘Homeboy’ his favorite moment during the show. “Everyone was singing along,” he says. “You could feel the emotion in the crowd. And of course, everybody sang on ‘Springsteen.’ He’d take a little break and the crowd would sing the chorus. And it seemed like the majority of people there knew the deep catalog, not just the hits.” Oswald’s highlight was an off-the-cuff moment. “About three quarters of the way through the set, somebody brought out a piece of paper,” she recalls. “He said, ‘We’re changing up the set list every night. I don’t even know what we’re playing next.’ And he kind of stumbled through one of the songs. He laughed and he cussed – and the whole crowd laughed and ate it up. It was entertaining to see him go ‘off script.’” Kelley describes himself as “One of the original 23” believers in Church. “I’ve been a massive fan from the beginning,” he says. “I think now we’re seeing more of him, about how he feels about things personally, in his music. He’s always had energy, but now we’re also seeing more emotion, maybe a softer side that reflects on what things mean to him. “For the first show [of the tour], it went off without a hitch,” adds Kelley. “Everybody seemed to know where they needed to be. I’ve been to some first-time shows where the sound mix might not have been right. That wasn’t present here. I think Eric worked his ass off to make sure this thing was ready to go. than expected. “Ryan Redington heads U.S. business for Amazon Music,” Mayne explains. “He’s not coming to do a 50-minute commercial for Amazon, but to share the intellectual and philosophical approach the company takes in all its business ventures. The way they look at the world, consumers, products and services like, for instance, coming up with the name Alexa for their Echo device. Research shows people consider her a member of the family after using it for a time. There are similarities in their perspectives and how broadcasters curate their product by developing a bond and connection with consumers.” This year’s research project (announced Ryan Redington today) focuses on “The Mobilization of Country Radio.” Longtime CRS contributor Edison Research tapped Tim Hayden, author of The Mobile Commerce Revolution for input. “All I know is, I actually have a Star Trek communicator in my pocket,” Mayne says. “The big picture of this presentation is getting off our hamster wheel for a big look at the outside world in which we need to grow, evolve, captivate Tim Hayden and maintain our relevance.” Artists offering career/life lessons has become a theme over the past several seminars. Little Big Town discussed perseverance a few years back. Keith Urban talked about being present two years ago and Tim McGraw chatted about career development and innovation last year. In 2017 the theme continues with “Toby Keith: My Way.” “He’s gone against the grain and really chosen his own path, and been incredibly successful doing so,” Mayne says. “Toby’s a savvy businessman who has developed his brand way beyond the perception of his space.”

Do You Hear What? Finally, Mayne addresses a continuing point of emphasis for seminar organizers. “Following on a tradition started seven years ago, any industry is really driven by its people,” he says. “In 2010 when hordes of people were losing their jobs we did a panel on the art of transition. Several years ago we had Cleveland Heart Lab doing Toby Keith free testing and I’ve got letters from people saying that blood test saved their life. Last year we arranged free COPD testing and a number of people have reached out saying they didn’t realize until then the condition they were in and had been pointed directly where to get immediate help. This year, on that same note, we’re offering hearing testing in conjunction with the Starkey Hearing Foundation and Nashville ENT Audiology.” Country Aircheck initially approached Starkey Hearing Foundation co-founders Bill and Tani Austin, who already had contacts in the country world and were enthusiastic about the idea. Mayne’s connections brought in Nashville ENT Audiology and he executed the partnership that resulted in a generous offering to attendees. A full hearing test, free to every registrant, could be between a $250 and $450 value – a significant offset to the cost of CRS registration. And potentially invaluable. “Audio is our lives,” Mayne says. “You just don’t know what you’re not hearing and finding out can change your life. It changed mine. I damaged my hearing at 21 playing in a rock band, but never thought it was that bad. When I finally sat in a testing room and tried different devices I literally had tears running down my cheek. Everybody needs to hear all the music. If we don’t take care of our own, who will?” Not convinced?
