HAPPY HOLIDAYS • December 19, 2016, Issue 531

Happy Do Year: Consultant To-Do List

An English artist once said, “I think in terms of the day’s resolutions, not the year’s.” The same can often be said of radio programmers, but not because they have some noble desire to live life a day at a time. Programming today is a tough lesson in ball juggling that offers little time for reflection, evaluation and planning for the long term. With that in mind, Country Aircheck enlisted three Country consultants to drive home the importance of finding that time and to explain why it might be right now. Scott Huskey New Horizons: An end-of-year station evaluation and potential freshening make sense for a lot of reasons. “Fewer folks are around for one thing and you can get a lot done with limited interruption,” notes RWPC’s Scott Huskey. “There are very few times during the year with actual downtime and this is as close as it gets.” More importantly, people have their eyes Joel Raab on the horizon. As Country Radio Consultants’ Joel Raab puts it, “The beginning of the year is a really good time to introduce new concepts on a radio station because people are just more open to it.” Foundations First: Start with the broad view. “Think strategically rather than tactically,” Huskey suggests. “You’ve had your nose to the grindstone all year, so use this time to sit back and look at the station from a Phil Hunt holistic perspective.” Revisit the station’s position relative to the marketplace. “The keys to an effective position are to be (continued on page 5)

Twice Is Nice: The WGKX/Memphis crew hoists a check for their second Country Cares For St. Jude Kids Radiothon of the year, this one for $302,145. The station shifted from a February to December schedule, which led to doubling up in ’16. Pictured (l-r, front) are Duane Shannon, Kay Manley, Scott Gaines and Marvin Emilien; (back, l-r) are Rachel Muller, Abby Summers, Lana DeLuca and Ariel Sawyer.

The Year In Music ... And More The No. 1 airplay artist of 2016 is Valory’s Thomas Rhett, powered in large part by the three-week No. 1 and overall No. 1 Song of the Year “Die A Happy Man.” The full breakdown of The Year In Music can be found in Country Aircheck’s December print issue, out this week. BMLGR’s Florida Georgia Line and 19/ Arista’s Carrie Underwood are the second and third-place finishers, with Reviver’s

Also in the issue, Capitol takes its eighth consecutive Label of the Year title in a year that saw significant staff and leadership changes. “We’re able to bump up people from within because of the caliber of people we have in the field,” says recently promoted VP/Promotion Bobby Young. “And being part of Universal, we’re fortunate that when good people become available, we’re going to get them. They want to work with us.” The 50th Annual CMA Awards and all associated festivities – post-parties, songwriter honors and more – are recapped in photos. CMA Broadcast Award winners give their take: “At one point I was standing next to Charley Pride, Charlie Daniels and Brad Mark Grantin Paisley, who was wearing his Buck Owens jacket and getting ready for the open,” says KTTS/Springfield, MO PD Mark Grantin. “For a moment there I definitely stopped being a radio guy and went back to being a fan.” And in The Interview, UMG/Nashville President Cindy Mabe discusses country’s fast-changing business landscape, the side of Chairman/CEO Mike Dungan we don’t see and her start in the industry. “My first job where I was hired technically was promotion Cindy Mabe coordinator and I enjoyed learning the

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE Sony/Nashville Sr. Dir./A&R Taylor Lindsey discusses her most influential music: 1. Hillary Lindsey: My sister is a prominent songwriter. She’s about 10 years older than me so she would send us tapes of all her demos when I was a kid. When my peers were listening to the Backstreet Boys, I was listening to uncut songs by all the writers in Taylor Lindsey Nashville. It definitely helped shaped my ears for A&R. 2. James Taylor at the Fox Theater, Atlanta: It was my first concert. He had such a knack for storytelling through songs and I was hooked. 3. ‘90s country: Alan Jackson, early Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Martina, Dixie Chicks, Randy Travis. You name it – I loved it. 4. Temptations or anything Motown: Growing up my parents had a lot of dinner parties at our house with their friends. Motown was always playing in the background and my dad and I would always have a dance party in our kitchen (and we still do when I go home). 5. Hymns: I grew up in a very small town in Georgia singing in the church choir. I learned harmony and pitch and tone from singing hymns. • Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: I haven’t actually heard the new Beyoncé record in its entirety. Kind of ashamed of that one. • “Important” music you just don’t get: I don’t really get heavy metal. I understand its relevance in the history of music and how some important guitar tones and sounds used today are a derivative of it, but it’s not something I’ll ever willingly listen to. • An album you listened to incessantly: Maren Morris’ Hero. (Not intended to be a shameless plug. I love this album – it’s my weekend jam.) • Obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Ben Rector’s “The Men That Drive Me Places.” It’s a song about being aware of the journey those around us are on – about having empathy and being grateful. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: Don’t like to admit it, but I’m totally a Belieber.

unique, be based on a key benefit area and be credible in the mind of the listener,” says Phil Hunt Consulting’s Phil Hunt. “So ask yourself where you fit into the marketplace, what your station’s story is and whether or not you’re telling it well.” Not sure? Listen. “It’s always a great exercise to get out of the station and listen to it,” Raab says, noting that many programmers have time off at the end of the year anyway. “It’s still a good opportunity to listen more as a listener than a programming professional. What would you like to hear more of and less of? What’s working and what isn’t working?” Plan To Win: If changes are warranted, make them as part of a broader, well-formulated plan. “I can’t over-emphasize the importance of planning,” Hunt says. “There are only three ways to increase ratings and those are to get more listeners, get them to listen longer and create more sittings per listener. If you don’t have a specific plan in each of those areas then you don’t have a plan.” That requires understanding the station’s ratings successes and challenges over the past year, among other things. “Programming isn’t a set it and forget it king of thing,” Hunt stresses. “Maybe you need to add to TSL or occasions. Maybe you need to do a more efficient job of moving your audience from one day to the next or from the weekend to Monday. Look at and include all of those things.” Promotions, events, ratings opportunities, research deadlines and periodic housekeeping chores can often be mapped out well in advance. “Get your calendar filled out for at least the next six months,” suggests Huskey, who encourages programmers to think of the process as establishing an “emergency fund.” “You’ll feel much more comfortable knowing you have some things planned months in advance because it lets you devote time to things that happen in the moment.” Budgets obviously loom large. “Everybody wants to go to the moon, so you have to know what kind of fuel to put in the

December 19, 2016

rocket,” Hunt says. “You might need a shot of cume and it’s helpful to be able to go in and say, ‘Okay, here’s how we’d like to do it.’” Further, if promotional budgets are tight or just nonexistent, view the planning process as an opportunity to huddle with management and sales to identify ways to monetize some initiatives to help cover expenses. Extra work now always pays off later, Huskey promises. “It’s tremendously important to try to hit the ground running in the New Year because it sets the tone for the rest of the year,” he says. “You won’t have to play catch up as often and you can minimize the ‘I meant to do that but ran out of time’ syndrome.” Music Rules: Any evaluation should include music. “The primary reason people listen to a Country radio station is because they love country music,” Raab says. “So you’d better make sure that product is as pristine as it can be.” That entails running audits, revisiting rotations, rules and mix ratios with current or revised station goals in mind. “Maybe you’ve always run seven powers,” Hunt says. “So what? Maybe it’s time to have five.” “Tackle the database,” Huskey suggests. “Over the course of the year when we’re rushing, items can get put into the scheduler without proper coding. Go through and make sure everything is correct.” Drop “dead wood,” Huskey says, referring to short-term items that are no longer useful or weaker songs that have bloated categories. “You’ll be surprised at what you find.” Evaluate where the format stands as a whole. Country appears to be softening, especially among Persons 18-34 (CAW 8/8), for example. As Raab quizzes, “What steps are being taken to maintain or to rebound in 2017? What are you doing to compensate?” “No one has a crystal ball,” Hunt acknowledges. “But Rusty Walker used to say it’s about taking advantage of the prevailing wind. So what is the prevailing wind and where is it blowing from? Set your sails to maximize the prevailing wind.” Full Strength: Automation systems, creative, imaging, special programming and on-air lineups come next. “Take the same approach as with the database,” Huskey suggests with regard to automation. “Clean out promos and imaging elements you aren’t using. Revisit numbering systems as well to make sure everything is correct.” The idea with everything is to maximize strengths and minimize or eliminate weaknesses. “Even if you think everything you’re doing is really good, you can use Disney’s ‘low ride out’ theory,” Raab says. “That basically means the ride that’s attracting least

Page 6

people – even if it’s a great ride – gets rested and possibly replaced for a time by another. So identify the things people will miss the least and replace them with a new thing. Great radio stations need to have new things happening to stay interesting.” What Matters Most: The overall point is to address the things that so often get ignored, but that matter most. “Everyone is so busy and it’s easy to lose focus on what’s most important,” Hunt says, recalling football coach and commentator Lou Holtz’s message to CRS attendees several years ago. “He said the key to success in life is understanding what’s important now and doing it. So what’s important now? Assess where you’ve been and make sure you’ve got a plan for where you want to be. True success doesn’t just happen.” And finally, when everything is in order, take a long, deep breath. “This is a great time to recharge the batteries,” Huskey promises. “Take a few days for yourself if you can.” Reach Raab here, Huskey here and Hunt here. –Russ Penuell
