Beginning To Sound A Lot Like...

‘Tis the season for holiday music. For programmers, that means reaching back for a popular country classic and looking through the new releases for another perennial yuletide gem. Country Aircheck asked a few folks for their thoughts, and even for a personal favorite that may or may not be something they actually put into rotation. We’ll start with a Carol ... because Christmas. KFDI/Wichita APD/MD Carol Hughes Go-To Christmas Gold: “Christmas Cookies,” George Strait. “My audience loves it. They also love ‘Where Are You Christmas’ by Faith Hill, Vince Vance & The Valiants ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ and ‘Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy’ by Garth Brooks or Brad Paisley. Both versions are great.” New Future Staple: “’Ugly Christmas Sweater’ by Garth. Also, ‘It Must Be Christmas’ by Chris Young and ‘Glow’ by Brett Eldredge. The brilliant thing about each of those songs is they feel like songs you’ve heard before, and that’s the key to Carol Hughes introducing a new Christmas song to the playlist.” Personal Fave: “’Let It Be Christmas’ by Alan Jackson. I love everything about that song. Least favorite (even though you didn’t ask) is ‘Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer.’ I never want to hear it again.” CBS Radio VP/Country Jeff Kapugi “Overall I am not a big Christmas music fan, but my wife is, so I get to hear a ton of it in the house each holiday season.” Go-To Christmas Gold: “Brenda Lee’s ‘Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree.’ My mom played this one until it wore out when I was a Jeff Kapugi kid. Brings back great holiday memories. My wife’s go-to is Diana Krall.” New Future Staple: Lots of solid new original and standard Christmas music out this year from Chris Young, Brett Eldredge,

Hysterical.“ Hall VP/Programming Bob Walker Go-To Christmas Gold: Jackson’s “Let It Be Christmas.” “A true staple that Country radio cultivated and owns. I don’t think there is another song that captures the whole of Christmastime in America like this one. Programming Notes

Next Monday (12/12) is the final addreporting day for Country Aircheck/ Mediabase stations. The following Monday (12/19) will be the last chart of 2016 and the last full Country Aircheck Weekly will be delivered that evening. A charts-free weekly will be sent Thursday, Dec. 29. The first add reporting deadline of 2017 is 2pm CT Tuesday, Jan. 3. The add board will be published via email that day. Country Aircheck Weekly will resume publication Jan. 9 with adds and a trend-free (no bullets, no +/- points/plays) chart.

Chart Chat

Congrats to Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley, Matthew Hargis and the BMLG Records promotion staff on scoring this week’s No. 1 with “May We All.” The song, which features Big Machine’s Tim McGraw, is the Florida Georgia Line second chart-topper from the duo’s current album Dig Your Roots. And kudos to Bobby Young and the Capitol crew on notching 86 adds for Luke Bryan’s “Fast,” topping this week’s board. Finally, belated congrats to songwriters Kelly Archer and Justin Ebach, as well as Downtown Music Publishing, all of whom celebrated their first Country No. 1 hits with last week’s chart-topper, Brett Young’s “Sleep Without You.” The song was also Young’s first No. 1 as a writer and artist.

Spotify’s most-streamed country artists of 2016 are Luke Bryan, Florida Georgia Line, Sam Hunt, Thomas Rhett and Jason Aldean. Hot Country is the service’s third-mostpopular playlist behind Today’s Top Hits and Rap Caviar. Additionally, while Bryan is the top new country artist, Spotify lists Johnny Cash as its top “old” country artist. More here. CBS Radio’s WYCD/Detroit raised more than $3,000 for the family of Wayne State University Police Officer Collin Rose, who died Nov. 23 after being shot during a routine traffic stop. More here. The Country Network (TCN) has added affiliates in Western Kansas, Salt Lake City, Milwaukee, Charlotte and Des Moines, IA. Details here. MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE Warner/Chappell EVP Ben Vaughn discusses his most influential music: 1. Dwight Yoakam’s This Time: Each song is a literate hillbilly masterpiece of lyric and melody. Inside the pocket of a clown/is a sad place to hang around/just watching smiles turn into frowns/inside the pocket of a clown. Genius. Ben Vaughn 2. Pearl Jam’s Ten: I still use this album as a brain cleaner when I need to not think about the music business, but feel the energy of the music. 3. Lyle Lovett And His Large Band: Country, blues, big band, smart writing ... just fantastic. Look, I understand too little too late/I realize there are things you say or do that you can never take back/But what would you be if you didn’t even try?/ You have to try/So after a lot of thought, I’d like to reconsider/ Please ... if it’s not too late ... make it ... a ... cheeseburger. 4. Hank Williams, Jr.: “Family Tradition,” “A Country Boy Can Survive,” “Country State of Mind,” “All My Rowdy Friends” – these are the songs that started my fascination with finding songs of Redneck Perfection. 5. James Taylor’s Greatest Hits: There’s no telling how many times I’ve listened to this group of songs. Shower the people you love with love. Folks, keep that simple idea in mind and things work out just fine. • A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: If I haven’t heard it, how can I comment? • “Important” music you just don’t get: EDM – I need lyrics. • An album you played incessantly: Chris Stapleton’s Traveller. People, we have one of the greats working among us right now. Enjoy it. Soak it in. Appreciate the music. • Obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Mel Torme’s “Blue Moon.” He was called the Velvet Fog. Listen to that voice. All of his music is so smooth. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: My collection is pretty big and diverse, but I guess punk stuff like The Dead Milkmen, The Ramones.

I love the style and how it seems to fit in almost any holiday playlist, country or otherwise, while staying Rachel Whitney uniquely Kacey. ‘A Willie Nice Christmas’ and ‘Present Without a Bow’ are two songs I think we’ll be hearing far into the future.
