Desert Heat: KMLE/Phoenix

Where does authenticity, a happy, focused team and an audience better described as a family get you? For CBS Radios’ KMLE/Phoenix, it gets you in position for some key victories in a hard-fought market battle. Consider this: The station did not win a single PPM monthly Persons 6+ against iHeartMedia’s KNIX in 2013. In 2014, it won only October. It’s won nine of the 22 surveys since, however, and tied KNIX in two of them. There’s been success elsewhere, too. Cluster VP/Programming and KMLE PD Tim Richards tells Country Aircheck the station beat KNIX by more Tim Richards than 50% P25-54 in AQH share for JulyAugust-September. P18-34 info wasn’t made available, but it’s hard to argue that KMLE hasn’t been on a roll. We spoke to Richards about the market, his introduction to Country programming and the reasons behind his station’s growth. Market Forces: “This is my favorite place,” says Richards, a Chicago native who joined the station in the spring of 2013 and was working in the market two years before that. “If I were given the choice to never go back to Arizona or to never leave, I would choose to never leave. I like everything about it.” He’s not the only one. Maricopa County, which makes up all of the Phoenix metro, saw the second largest population increase in the nation last year. Roughly 4 million people call it home, making it the 14th largest radio market in the United States. The 12+ population, Nielsen says, is around 3.6 million. Politics lean conservative in the county, which is roughly the size of New Hampshire Camelback Mountain geographically. (continued on page 5)

Pour An Ice Cold Panhorst

“Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.” The words are from humorist Dave Barry, but KSD/St. Louis PD/midday personality Dusty Panhorst would agree, especially now that there’s a beer with his name on it – literally – at the Anheuser-Busch Brewery Biergarten. Country Aircheck Dusty Panhorst caught up with Panhorst to find out how

he managed to make that happen, and how we could get some. “I’m a home brewer,” says Panhorst. “Anheuser-Busch is the presenting sponsor on our Bull Float Trip, so we were coming up with ideas and I was kind of being a smartass when I said, ‘You should just let me brew with you guys.’” The suggestion led to meetings with the head brewmasters at the RPB – the Research Pilot Brewery, where all new AnheuserBusch beer creations are born. Panhorst discussed flavor preferences and what he thought would be best for the station’s float trip. “I said I wanted something light with a crisp finish, not too high in alcohol content because it will be hot, something easy to drink in the summer,” he says. Together, they created a recipe for a blonde ale, and Panhorst went to the brewery for brew day, something not many civilians have ever been allowed to do. “They’re doing research and creating new beers, so people aren’t allowed to go in and tour that area,” he says. “One time they had a competition with local brewing organizations where home

brewers got to go in and brew there, but as far as anybody who’s not really in the brewing community, it has not really happened before.” Panhorst took part in the all-day brewing process, and came back a month later to keg and bottle the batch. It came out to about 16 kegs of what Panhorst calls “the perfect beer.” “It uses two row and caramel malts and few different select hops like cascade and CTZ,” he says. “It’s crisp, it’s got a little bit of a citrus flavor, but it’s not overwhelming with bitterness, and at 5.5% alcohol by volume, it’s not through the roof when it comes to alcohol content.” Of course, the important part is the taste. “I’m biased, but I think it’s fantastic,” says Panhorst, who got a good reaction when The Bull Float Trip Dusty’s Brew was unveiled at the event. “The listeners all said they really enjoyed it.” After sampling the new beer at the station’s float trip, the rest is available exclusively at the brewery’s Biergarten, but only until the original batch is gone. “I’m hoping it will be a continual thing, where we keep it going every year,” he says. “We would probably come up with a new concept and a different beer each time.” For Panhorst, a self-proclaimed beer geek, the experience was like a dream come true. “You know how excited people get about meeting artists? That was me walking into Anheuser-Busch to brew,” he says. “I have my own beer bottles with my own labels with my name on them. I have it on tap at the brewery until they run out of it -- I have my own tap at the Biergarten at Anheuser Busch! That’s the Mecca when it comes to brewing and beer. It’s the biggest in the entire world, and to get to actually go there and brew with them was pretty insane.” See pictures and videos of the process here and here. MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE Hard Luck Recording Co.'s Troy Cartwright discusses his most influential music: 1. Bob Schneider, The Knitting Factory, NYC in 2007, Tribeca: On top of the stellar songwriting, he puts on one of the most unique and electric live shows I've ever witnessed. It still stands out as one of the seminal experiences of my life. Troy 2. Incubus, Light Grenades Tour, Cartwright Dallas in 2008, Gypsy Tea Room: Growing up, Incubus was one of my favorite bands. It's the only time I've seen Incubus live, but it was at the peak of their power and it was fantastic. 3. Where the Light Is: John Mayer Live In Los Angeles: This holds up as one of the best performances I've ever seen. Who else can open for themselves, acoustic, do a trio blues jam show, and then play another 90 minutes of hit original songs with a full backing band? That takes some real talent and stamina. 4. Band Of Horses, Bonnaroo, 2008: The sun was setting directly on them as they played. I don't know how they got through the set because there is no way anyone up there could see. If you closed your eyes though, you would have never known. Beautiful harmonies and wonderfully crafted songs. 5. Chris Stapleton, Dallas, 2015: This was a week before his CMA Performance. Chris' Traveller was wearing out my eardrums, and it's so rare that an artist comes to town the same time that you're really digging their record. He puts on an incredible show and is deserving of every accolade he has received. I'm guessing I won't be able to see him for less than $20 next time he comes to town. • Highly regarded song or album you've never heard: I have never listened to a full Rolling Stones album. I'll have to remedy that! • "Important" music you just don't get: Maybe I just don't like donuts, but I've never been into Ariana Grande. • An album you played incessantly: Jason Isbell's Southeastern. I've listened to this record so much I actually wore out the vinyl copy of it. • Obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: I've had "Holy Days" by Sean McConnell on repeat. • Music you'd rather not admit to enjoying: There was a time where I had the band Say Anything in pretty heavy rotation. Not ashamed of it though – ...Is A Real Boy had some jams!

Page 7 nuances was an early focus. “The mechanics of good radio are largely the same, but the format is still its own thing,” he says. “The interaction with Nashville and the business modality is the antithesis of what happens in the other formats where the artists really don’t care about radio.” Country’s unique nature became clear early in Richards’ tenure as he began updating KMLE imaging. He’d been sampling Country stations in a variety of markets to identify some of the format’s better practices when he heard a liner voiced by Toby Keith on WIVK/Knoxville. “When you hear my music on [WCYQ], it’s just business,” Keith stated. “When you hear my music on WIVK, it’s family.” Richards loved it, considered it playful and gathered a series of his own such liners at the next opportunity. The competition wasn’t amused, however, and Richards was soon fielding calls from Nashville. “Of course I pulled them off the air immediately,” he says. “I’d just wanted a

competitive edge and didn’t think through the implications. I didn’t understand Nashville from a relationship standpoint.” Jobs One: As Richards navigated the ins and outs of format politics, he was also taking stock of KMLE’s challenges. Mornings were among them. “We had a good morning guy who I didn’t think was the right fit for the station,” Richards recalls. “I didn’t feel like he was relating to the audience, so we made a change.”

That change came in November of 2013 when CBS Radio Top 40 WSJT/Tampa morning host Steve Kramer was paired with KMLE afternooner Nina D (CAT 11/4/13). Things still weren’t right two years later and Kramer was replaced with APD/MD/middayer Chris Matthews. Chris & Nina front KMLE mornings today and Richards is pleased with their progress. They beat KNIX’s morning show P18-49 by 20% on AQH share, he notes, and by 65% P25-54. Fostering a sense of authenticity and community has been another focus. “Listeners can hear authenticity,” Richards argues. “And we’ve tried to build a culture where the listeners know we care about them and one that makes them feel like they’re part of something.” Mechanically, that requires blurring the lines between the station, listener and artist, he says. “We do it through imaging, contesting and jock banter,” Richards continues. “We’re making the point that this KMLE [pronounced “camel”] nation is a family. And the listeners are a part of it just like Blake Shelton is and our personalities are. The station becomes the meeting point for the convergence of those things.” Camel’s Back: Music on KMLE is slightly more current than that on KNIX. The CBS property comes in at 56% current/26% recurrent/18% gold with an average song vintage of 2013. There are roughly 265 unique titles on the playlist, heavy currents of which spin 75-80 times weekly. KNIX, meanwhile, comes in at 38/37/25%. Unique titles there hover at just more than 300 and heavy currents get roughly the same exposure as on KMLE. Cultivating a “new country” identity for KMLE began in the fall of 2012 under predecessor Jeff Garrison and just ahead of the format’s 18-34 boom. Older on-air verbiage including “grab a hump and hang on” and “KMLE Country 108” were abandoned, along with its camel mascot and other characteristics Richards says dated the station. “We’ve ridden that wave and it’s evolved some over the last few years,” he says. “And about a year ago KNIX gave up their positioning statement in favor of ‘the valley’s [No. 1 for new country],’ which to us was an acknowledgement of what we’re doing and the value of trying to own that position.” “The new KMLE [still pronounced “camel] at 107.9” is how the station is known today. The “camel” lingo serves a purpose of its own. “Being in the

desert actually has nothing to do with it,” Richards explains. “The iconic mountain, hiking spot and one of the most beautiful pieces of real estate in the Phoenix Valley is called Camelback. It’s also the name of the biggest east-west road through the valley.” The female imaging voice that helps bring KMLE to life is Phoenix-based Ann DeWig (demo here), who Richards describes as one of the best ad-libbers he’s ever worked with. Her male counterpart is Joe Zieja (demo here), a colorful guy who once worked for the NSA, recently wrote a novel and practices Parkour in his spare time. More importantly, he has what Richards calls a “cool, could-be-your-buddy voice.” Big, bellowing in-your-face voice talents need not apply. “Going back to authenticity, it just doesn’t relate,” Richards argues. “I want somebody who can at least sound like one of our listeners.” Pitched Battle: Richards is happy with the station’s progress and is realistic about the challenges ahead. “It’s going to be a battle here,” he says. “One station isn’t going to run away with it. It’s fun to rally the troops and put wins on the board for KMLE, but I’m not going to tell you that makes us geniuses. We’re not. And I’m not going to tell you that KNIX is a sick radio station because it’s not. They do a good job and we have to stay on top of our game.” Games are supposed to be fun, of course, and Richards is having a blast. “This is my favorite format and the one I’d always wanted to do,” he says. “My dad was in a country band growing up, I play guitar and Merle Haggard is my favorite artist of all time.
