2016 Fantasy Label Draft

The script got flipped on the fourth annual Country Aircheck Fantasy Label Draft. Each year, we assemble a crosssection of Country radio pros to draft, fantasy football-style, a team of artists and label execs. And each year, to this point anyway, the early picks are devoted to the format’s biggest stars. Not this time around... First things first, the final tally from the 2015 draft is in and the winner is ... wait for it ... [Ed. Note: There is no tally. There is no scoring system. This is an arbitrary call by the author.] ... Team Bruce Logan Christi Brooks comprised of Miranda Lambert, Jason Aldean, A Thousand Horses, Chris Lane, Mike Dungan and Jon Loba. Now, let’s meet the 2016 team owners: KKBQ/Houston APD/MD Christi Brooks, KUPL/Portland MD Danny Dwyer, WUBB/ Savannah, GA morning host Tim Leary, KMLE/Phoenix VP/Programming Tim Danny Dwyer Richards, iHeartCountry man-of-many titles Gregg Swedberg and WIVK/Knoxville PD Nikki Thomas. Each is charged with drafting six team members: Female Artist, Male, Duo/Group, President, VP/Promotion and Rookie – an artist who has never had a No. 1 single. “First off, I want to thank Country Aircheck for feeding my unnatural obsession with Tim Leary fantasy sports,” Swedberg said. “I prepared tirelessly, creating charts and mock drafts attempting to cover every possible (continued on page 8)

Do Good Reps

The tools of the trade for record company promotion staffers – tickets, backstage passes, artist access – may look like superpowers to the average fan. And while those abilities are bestowed in furthering the goals of the label and its artists, occasionally, a rep sees fit to apply them to a deserving mortal. Damon Moberly Faced with conniving star chasers, those decisions can be perilous, as Mercury VP/Promotion Damon Moberly knows too well. "You get a lot of crazies," he says. "People feigning cancer to get close to artists. We just had one with a girl who was thought to have been abducted in Pennsylvania. A friend wanted to get a message to Shania, the missing girl's favorite artist. And it ended up being a hoax."

Those sad and at times deplorable maneuverings may be the more common reality, but this is not that story. Rather, it is the story of Big Machine's Alex Valentine and superfan Jackie Brannan. "On one of my first visits as a rep to Albuquerque, I was introduced to Jackie," he says. "She is one of those people who maybe doesn't have the outward trappings of a lot going on in her life, but what she does have is passion." Valentine points to the dread station staffers tend to have about the most onerous "prize pigs" who show up at station events. "No one had that negative connotation with Jackie," he says. "She was that bright light and people liked being around her. She's as overthe-top as it gets as a fan, but her heart is in the right place." Brannan with So for no Rascal Flatts particular reason, Valentine started getting her into meet-and-greets when he was in town. "All she wants is a picture," he says. "She's not in anybody's face. She's not a stalker. My wife and kids have met her over the years. We Facebook back and forth. She'll ask if I'm going to be at a show and if not, totally cool." During a recent Tim McGraw tour stop in the city, the headliner pulled Valentine onstage so the crowd could sing to him. "It was my birthday," he explains. "When I got offstage I thought, that was so cool, but I have no record of it. Just then, Jackie came

Page 4 up. 'Alex, I have the whole thing on my phone.'" After the show, Brannan burned a DVD of the moment and mailed it to Valentine. "That was over-the-top," he says. Barrel Of Feels: In a very different way, this is also the story of Broken Bow's Scotty O'Brien, KNIX/Phoenix's Barrel Boy, Jason Aldean and Austin Dorcey. "I avoid these kinds of things," O'Brien says, admitting his years in radio made him cynical about fans clamoring to meet artists. "The problem is, the people who really need and deserve it are so hard to find." Fourteen-yearold Dorcey is battling a rare heart condition and developmental Dorcey with Aldean challenges, and has and Barrel Boy been mentored by and (inset) getting Barrel Boy for more ready for school than a year. "I was paying attention to what I saw on Barrel Boy's social pages and could see this was more than just random photo ops. This was a radio guy using his job for good to make this kid's day and put him in places he'd never otherwise be."

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE Cornman Music singer/songwriter Caitlyn Smith discusses her most influential music: 1. Patty Griffin’s Living With Ghosts: It was extremely pivotal in my musical journey. Her lyrics, melodies, the way her voice cuts like a knife. My favorite tracks were “Forgiveness” and “Not Alone.” 2. Alison Krauss’ Now That I’ve Found Caitlyn Smith You: A Collection: That was my first cassette. As a kid, I would lay in front of my boom box and flip the tape from side to side. There are so many gems on the record. Such solid songwriting. And there’s no better voice on the planet. 3. Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot: This was my go-to record for my angst-y teen years. Jeff Tweedy is one of the best. I blew out my car speakers on this record. Multiple cars. 4. Ray LaMontagne’s Till The Sun Turns Black: To me, this record is perfection – his writing, his voice. I still to this day can’t put it down. I bought it on vinyl, too. It’s my go-to rainy day record. 5. Coldplay: Hands down, the best live show I’ve ever seen in my life. It was about 10 years ago and it’s still burned in my mind. • Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: I’m ashamed that I’ve never listened to a Neil Young record in its entirety. I feel really bad about that. • “Important” music you just don’t get: I have an impossible time connecting with or understanding heavy metal. It stresses me out. • An album you listened to incessantly: I could not stop listening to the Chris Stapleton Traveller record. It was like musical crack – and I was hooked. I’ve played it hundreds of times. • An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: I’ve recently started listening to Tom Waits. I love the song “Grapefruit Moon.” The chorus melody slays me. The rawness of his vocal hurts my feelings even more than I thought was possible. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: Britney Spears, all the way. I have all her records. I’m a huge Brit Brit fan.

Having learned Dorcey is a huge Jason Aldean fan in advance of a Phoenix tour stop, O'Brien went to work on a meet-and-greet with a little something extra. "I got a No. 1 plaque made with Austin's name on it," he says. "Most of the time those go to random label douches, never a teenage boy. I also got a tour book and a

guitar. I got with Jason and his tour manager before the show so they knew what we were doing to make someone's day." O'Brien says it wasn't about him or even Aldean. "I'm the Southeast rep," he says. "I have nothing to do with Phoenix. This was really about helping a radio guy look like a rock star to this kid. You can see Barrel Boy crying in the video because he couldn't help but be moved. He really cares about that kid." Watch the video here. Dorcey, who rarely rides the school bus for fear of being picked on, took the bus the next day decked out head-to-toe in Aldean swag. Valentine says moments like those are priceless. "I've always got a couple pair of tickets put back for emergencies, and sometimes during the first song of a Taylor show I'll find that family walking away from the venue with their heads hung low. To see the look on their face when you tell them they're a gift from Taylor ... you don't want any money ... in my worst times in this business, that is what keeps me going." OFF THE RECORD: Morgan Wallen Big Loud’s Morgan Wallen puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to WIVK/Knoxville. There’s a guy named Gunner there and he looks a lot like Alan Jackson. The first time I heard myself on the radio was on KMLE/Phoenix. It made me feel something I’ve never felt before. It was insane. Morgan Wallen My very first day of radio tour I went to WUSY/Chattanooga and to PD Gator Harrison’s house. His two daughters were there and we all sang “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” That was pretty cool. Every time I’m at a truck stop I get peanuts. I would love to have dinner with my granddad. We always used to go to Long John Silver’s together, so I’d order fish and chips. I have a traditional, roots sound. But I also mix it up a little bit with some rhythmic phrasing. There are real instruments on my album. There’s nothing programmed. I grew up listening to Christian music, and rock music like Bad Company and Van Halen – so my music is a blend of all of my influences. My last impulse buys were three shirts at an AllSaints outlet in Chicago. I wish I’d written Eric Church’s “Springsteen.” That song hits me in all my feels. It makes you feel like you’ve lived the life he’s talking about. It’s probably my favorite song of all time. I have to have water with me on the road. Room temperature water. I drink a lot of it, so every time we go somewhere I’ll just buy a whole case. And I always wear a cross necklace. I never take it off. My least favorite interview question is what my music sounds like. It’s so hard to try to compare your music with someone else’s. Hopefully mine doesn’t sound like anyone else. I would love to be stuck in San Diego. I had never been there before my radio tour started. It was 80 degrees during the day, with no humidity, and 60 degrees at night with a breeze. Maybe Espo, Herring and I could talk them into touring together.” Dwyer also liked starting off “with some power executives running my empire. I’m a little disappointed that I couldn’t ink the deal with Kelsea Ballerini [and] Team Swedberg took my first Rookie choice Maren Morris right out of the gate. That’s okay. I had a great No. 2 lined up and caught everybody sleeping.” “None of these labels will be hurting for sales,” Leary says. Like Dwyer, he laments letting Ballerini and Morris get away. He’s celebrating his team’s “fast rising talents and a mega star core artist,” as well as his executive picks. “When Danny picked Scott Borchetta, that’s when I got the idea to bring Joe Galante back into the biz.” Thomas says, “I have a young roster, but they’re going to kill. My label head and VP have a proven track record of artist development and success. Swedberg and Christi had some great choices, but I’m still pretty happy with my people. I’ll also be going for adds September 19. Make space on your list!” “Pretty sure Nikki and I will hang out the next time we are in the same place,” Brooks adds. “Anyone who can trash talk like that is my kind of lady. While we all had a veteran or two, we all see big things from our up-and-coming stars in the format. I like that. Shows we are healthy. And I would love to be able to do this on a video chat. The trash talking and possible cussing and obscene gestures could add to the fun.” The king of humility is Swedberg, who solved his label president problem late with a flier on the head of Blue Chair Records. “Well, I won, but I think that after every fantasy draft I ever do,” he says, noting big talent remaining on the board. Still, he’s happy with this team. “We would move some records and put on some pretty cool shows. And we have Royce to provide strategy and comedy relief.
