A big ratings win for the 51st CMA Awards pales next to the emotional win the artists and producers managed in a turbulent time for country music and the nation. At least, that’s the way our annual survey of radio reactions has it. “I cannot remember a better broadcast,” says Hall WCTK/Providence’s Bob Walker. “The tribute to Troy Gentry and Eric Church’s open with ‘Amazing Grace’ were top notch all around. It was all about the music.” KNIX/Phoenix’s Lois Lewis was finishBob Walker ing up at the station as the show started. “I played catch-up,” she says of not being in the building for the first time in a while. “I loved seeing Darius Rucker leading the charge in the open. It set the tone for the night – country, community and family. It seems like everyone geeked-out playing with him.” In the pleasantly-surprised camp is WLHK/ Indianapolis’ Fritz Moser. “With all the chatter over the last couple weeks, I really exLois Lewis pected this show to be somewhat depressing,” he says. “That was so not the case. In many ways it felt stronger than last year’s 50th.” As Advertised: “The show served up the emotional gamut Carrie Underwood promised in the monologue,” says KSOP/Salt Lake City’s Jim Mickelson. “Tears, laughs and great music, with some very powerful performances and tributes.” Adds WPOC/ Fritz Moser Baltimore’s Jeff St. Pierre, “[Hosts] Carrie and Brad Paisley have come so far since their first show and they were on fire. The opening monologue was their best yet.” Lewis agrees, “Carrie and Brad are flawless together. Congrats to Carly Pearce, Kris Lamb, Erik Powell and the Big Machine promo staff on securing this week’s No. 1 with “Every Little Thing.” The song is Pearce’s first chart topper and lead single from the album which shares its title. Songwriters are Emily Shackelton, Busbee and Pearce. And kudos to Bobby Young and the Capitol team on landing 95 adds for Keith Urban’s “Female,” topping this week’s board.

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE CAA’s Elisa Vazzana discusses her most influential music: 1. The Patsy Cline Story: It was a double album and the first CD I purchased with my chore money at six years old. My neighbor’s mom used to play her a lot. I remember hearing “Leavin’ On Your Mind” one day and Elisa falling in love with the emotion in her voice. Vazzana From that moment on, I was the lone country listener in my house. 2. Michael Bolton’s Time, Love & Tenderness Tour, 1992: Everyone has a first concert and this was mine (thanks to my soft rock-loving Mom). Plot twist: Celine Dion was support. 3. Dixie Chicks’ Wide Open Spaces: To me, this album is absolute country perfection from start to finish. I love a distinct vocal. These women were the soundtrack to my teenage years. 4. Patty Griffin’s “Let Him Fly”: Nothing like having your heart ripped out of your chest for the first time. I love the healing power of a damn good country song. The rawness of the cut with the siren in the background makes it that much more vulnerable and real to me. 5. Kip Moore’s “Hey Pretty Girl”: On a random playlist, it’s the song that was playing when my daughter was born. So well written and an obvious tearjerker. • Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: Pink Floyd’s The Wall. • “Important” music you just don’t get: Heavy metal. Just not my personal preference. • An album you listened to incessantly: Jon Pardi’s California Sunrise. His moment has arrived and he straight up crushed this album! “She Ain’t In It” has timeless classic written all over it. • An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: I’m obsessed with Demi Lovato’s “Sorry Not Sorry.” It puts me in a sassy mood every time! • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I have no shame in my boy band-loving game. I may or may not have a personalized license plate from my first car that says NSYNC 1.

WGTY/York PD/morning host Scott Donato. “There were a good many tributes, and each had its own space and was done tastefully and beautifully. No corners were cut.” WNCY/Appleton-Green Bay’s Randy “Shotgun” Shannon agrees. “The tributes were amazing, especially the one for Troy Gentry,” he says. Standout performances were numerous. Mickelson: “Brothers Osborne, Little Big Town, Chris Stapleton, Keith Urban, P!nk, Miranda Lambert and Carrie’s ‘Softly And Tenderly.’” St. Pierre: “That incredible show opening, Kelsea Ballerini singing with Reba McEntire and, my personal favorite moment of the night, Maren Morris with Niall Horan. It was one for the ages.” Donato: “Brothers Osborne’s multi-layered single and tribute performance really stood out, but Eric Church’s open packed a big punch, too.” Jeff St. Pierre What You Say: “The speeches seemed to have a common theme of peace, unity, and togetherness as a format,” Donato says. “Hard to ignore Little Big Town’s words, which carried that chord to the max.” He adds praise for Jon Pardi’s acceptance. “It was short, but it seemed so sincere and gave him an opportunity to finally get some much-deserved spotlight.” Moser liked seeing a few others earn micScott Donato time. “It was nice seeing Brothers Osborne grab Duo again,” he says. “And Garth Brooks, Entertainer of the Year? Yes, he continues to earn this one.” As for what listeners thought, Walker had his covered. “We had four people working the social networks and listener response was very positive,” he says. “It was ‘moment,’ after ‘moment,’ after ‘moment.’ Although,” he adds of Brooks’ performance, “they were not happy Randy Shannon with the lip syncing.” Moser appreciated the EoY’s directness. “The guy gets in front of it, owns it and everyone moves on. What a pro.” There’s some dissent on which of those moments was the moment. For Moser, the big one “had to be Little Big Town and Jimmy Webb on ‘Wichita Lineman.’ It was so spot-on.” Donato starts and ends at Underwood’s tribute. “When those victim’s names started scrolling towards the end, it was beyond difficult to keep it

OFF THE RECORD: Ryan Weaver PBR Music’s Ryan Weaver puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to WQYK/Tampa and WTRS/Ocala. But we moved around a lot and I joined the Army at 18, so my memories are listening to music my brothers played: Steve Miller Band, Journey and the Eagles. Ryan Weaver The first time I heard myself on the radio, I was stationed in Fort Rucker after I got back from Iraq and they asked for Christmas military songs. I submitted an acoustic vocal track. I woke up to the radio on my alarm clock one morning and they were playing it. I was confused at first. When I realized it was on the radio I started jumping around and called my mom. My favorite tour memory is when Charlie Daniels introduced me on the Grand Ole Opry, September 11, 2015. My favorite person to travel with is Trey McCampbell. He’s my bass player, road manager, and next to my wife, my best friend. He was even in our wedding. I call him my brother. My least favorite is anyone who ate beans or Brussels sprouts before they got on the bus. At a truck stop, I pick up peanut M&Ms and Monster Absolute Zero. When my wife is on the road with us, she knows that’s what I want – she doesn’t even have to ask. I’d love to have dinner with my late brother Aaron. We’d eat whatever he orders. We like the same things. My EP is American rockin’ country that will get your red, white and blue blood pumping. It is produced by Wynn Varble, with three songs I co-wrote. My last impulse buy was some jeans in the Denver airport and a jacket in Las Vegas. I’m always looking for cool clothes on the road. The most redneck thing I’ve done lately is use the weedeater to mow my whole back yard. I wish I’d written Tim McGraw’s “Live Like You Were Dying” [written by Craig Wiseman and Tim Nichols]. It never gets old. It’s one of the best songs ever written. And it has nothing to do with the fact that there’s a bull in it. My road essentials are a custom Larry Mahan cowboy hat, the hatbox for it and a travel steamer. And with all the smoky bars we play, a Neti-Pot is a lifesaver. I’d love to be stuck in Tampa, since all my family lives within an hour of there. And St. Augustine doesn’t suck. I love the laidback, flip-flop attitude there.

together,” he says. “Simply the most emotional performance I’ve ever seen live or at home during an awards show.” Moser adds, “It reminded everyone that our country music family lives outside of Nashville. It was touching and handled with dignity and class.” Surprise, Surprise, Surprise: For St. Pierre, the big surprise was Female Vocalist. “Miranda is totally deserving, but I thought Kelsea or Maren Morris would’ve taken it this year.” The duo category going to Brothers Osborne puzzled him, too. “Love the guys and their music, but how do they beat out Florida Georgia Line, who are selling out stadiums in 30 seconds and knocking out hit after hit after hit?” Lewis agrees with FGL’s touring being overlooked and addresses a disconnect between winners and airplay. “Keith Urban and Thomas Rhett are on my station every hour,” she says. “I love Chris Stapleton, but our listeners are just now discovering him.” Walker also notices recognition that seems a bit late. “I’m a fan, but Jon Pardi was ‘new’ on our station four years ago.” “Sam Hunt’s ‘Body Like A Back Road’ was such a huge song in our format and outside it,” Shannon points out. “Not winning for Song or Single is a head-scratcher for me.” He adds, “While it’s hard to argue with Garth Brooks as Entertainer of the Year, Eric Church’s three-and-a-half-hour shows are amazing.” Donato’s biggest surprise was Keith Urban’s win for Single. “For some reason, Keith has been shut out in so many categories for so long,” he says. “So I really enjoyed one of our greatest entertainers ever celebrating a win.” Moser adds, “I did find a few other things surprising. Like Sugarland presenting. I smiled when I saw how happy they looked onstage. Not onstage was Florida Georgia Line, who are all over the radio. I think their absence was felt.” Transitioning to the “get off my lawn” category, Donato says, “Our latest country ‘apology’ addition to the show was P!nk, who by all accounts, was wonderful, but that was one of a couple performances that didn’t really make any sense. We’ve got so many incredible artists in this format, I am all for creating moments with outside artists if it makes sense. See Justin [Timberlake] and Chris [Stapleton], but the last couple years have seemed really out of place.” Walker concurs. “Why not let Kane Brown and Lauren Alaina sing their No. 1 hit?” he asks. Mickelson volunteers his services as an “armchair producer,” saying, “I would liked to have seen some actual artist ‘hand-holding’ as a show of even more unity during ‘Hold My Hand’ in the open. Perhaps including more artists who played Route 91 Harvest Festival.” Finally, Moser says CMA’s commitment to radio is not unnoticed. “I really appreciate how the CMA recognizes the broadcast winners. It’s a proud moment to see our friends with their trophies.” He adds, “Overall, it was a really strong production.” To wit, Lewis’ reaction: “I cried more than when I watch This Is Us.” –Paul Williams CAC
