Remembering Dolly Parton

Colleagues share favorite memories of the late Dolly Parton (Chronicle 8/25): Results Global’s John Zarling: Dolly and I were catching up at a Spotify content taping in early 2019, and she was surprised to learn I was no longer with Sony (her label at the time). She asked me why – and I simply said “You!” She smiled, looked at me intently, and said, “Sometimes you have to change dreams in the middle of the stream.” She grabbed my hand and we walked into the studio. Then-RCA promotion exec Joe Galante: My boss Jerry Bradley told me Dolly was going to promote a show by riding the Long With Joe Galante Island Railroad and singing a few songs on a flatbed train car. We’d met, but this was my first time going out with her and we started at 7am to catch all the people going to work. At each station she’d get out there in full outfit, makeup and hair – sing perfectly, then come back in the car and we’d have a great conversation on the way to the next stop. I’d never met anyone who did anything with that much joy. That day cemented our relationship for many years With Olly Rowland to come. When she did the cover of Playboy, I bought 200 copies and had the covers signed and framed for radio stations, the trades and all the accounts. I didn’t realize it, but she left one for me, too, that referenced all the times I had to call her in from personal time to do something. She wrote, “To Joe, For every vacation you’ve screwed up, you’ve made up for it in a million ways. Love you, Dolly. PS: I’m glad I got that off Parton's signed my chest.” [Ed. Note: Emphasis hers.] Playboy cover to CTK Enterprises’ Olly Rowland: Dolly Joe Galante never wanted to bother anyone at a hotel, whether it was us or room service – especially at odd hours. She always asked for a few meals and breakfast plates she could heat up herself if she woke up early. So I was showing her around her room in Frisco, TX for the ACM Awards, including the items stocked in the fridge – one of which was her favorite Danny Nozell, Parton, John Zarling dessert, banana pudding. She broke down laughing at how I said it, as I’m British, then tried to mimic me: “Bah-nah-nah pudding.” That became a running joke and, if we ever needed a laugh, I’d just say “banana pudding” and it would set her off again. Hosted by media personality Kelly Sutton and artist Mandy Barnett, the 23rd annual Source Nashville Hall of Fame dinner carried special meaning on the evening of Dolly Parton’s passing last week (8/25). As Sutton said, “Even though we’re sad, her spirit is in this room and lives on in every one of us as we celebrate women in music.” First honoree Debbie Carroll, currently the Exec. Dir. for Belmont’s Center for Mental Health in Entertainment, received a video tribute from Michael McDonald, who praised her as someone who “dedicated their life and built their career out of being of service to others.” He called all of this year’s inductees “the backbone of the music industry in Nashville, and we owe them much.” Carroll, Her Honor: Pictured (l-r) are co-host Mandy who started out Barnett, honorees Cris Lacy, Paige Conners, Carla as a therapist, Wallace, Margie McGahey, Sherry Oakley and spoke about how Debbie Carroll, and co-host Kelly Sutton. people trusting her during their most vulnerable times in every facet of her career has been “an honor and a privilege.” CBS Records/Sony/Warner/AFM Local 257’s Paige Conners’ video tribute came from producer Paul Worley, with whom she worked at two labels and his Paul Worley Productions before she joined the Nashville Musicians Association in 2016. Worley told Conners, “Your superpower has always been your care and concern for others.” Addressing all of the honorees, Worley said, “The women are the ones who make the trains run on time and always have been. Now they are taking more of a leadership role, and they deserve it.” Warner Records Nashville’s Cris Lacy was honored by Porter’s Call founder Al Andrews, who said in their first meeting Lacy expressed a desire to “encourage artists toward better mental health, and over the years I’ve watched [her] do just that.” He added that her care for artists will be her “legacy.” “Unless you’re an artist, we all choose to live in service to someone else’s story,” Lacy said. “So I want to thank Source for giving the supporting characters a spot center stage.” She went on to thank “everyone who’s ever taken a chance on me … and all of the artists who trusted me with their most sacred possession: their music.” Margie McGahey started her career in radio at WORM/Savannah, TN before spending 35 (continued on page 3)

She received a video tribute from Bill Anderson, who praised her passion for her job and called her “an evangelist, spreading the gospel of the Grand Ole Opry and WSM.” In her brief speech, McGahey said, “It’s a wonderful business we’re in. Congratulations to Kane Brown, Dennis Reese, Mallory Michaels and the RCA promotion team on taking “Woman” to No. 1. This is Brown’s 14th visit to the top spot. Songwriters are John Byron, Ashley Gorley, Ben Johnson, Taylor Phillips and Brown. Kudos to Lee Adams and the Broken Bow crew on scoring 13 adds for “Anytime Soon” by Jason Kane Brown Aldean to return it to the top of the CA/MB Add Board. Country radio airplay following Dolly Parton’s passing was unprecedented. She was the 11th most played artist in the format in the past week, with 79 different songs amassing 6,613 spins across the panel, an increase of more than 26,000% from 25 spins last week. The three most-played Parton songs were among the 10 most played gold titles for the week: No. 3 “9 To 5,” No. 5 “Jolene” and No. 9 “I Will Always Love You.” Had they been currents, both “9 To 5” and “Jolene” would have landed in this week’s Top 50. Parton’s chart history began before the introduction of the R&R chart in 1973. On Dec. 21 of that year, in the chart’s 11th week, “Jolene” debuted at No. 8 on what was then a 20-position list. She went on to make 63 more appearances on the R&R/Country Aircheck/MB Country chart, with 14 of those reaching No. 1 for a total of 29 weeks at the top, giving her the third most weeks at No. 1 among all female vocalists, behind only Reba and Carrie Underwood. Perhaps more telling of Parton’s impact is the fact that those No. 1s landed across four decades, from “Here You Come Again” in 1977 to “When I Get Where I’m Going” with Brad Paisley in 2006. She is one of only six artists to land No. 1s in four decades, joined by Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, Reba and George Strait.

for the 50th CMA Awards’ “Forever Country” video, her team tried to move the date as they feared it would be an all-day affair. She was the only artist scheduled and the director and crew flew in from L.A. just for her, so they agreed to keep the 7am shoot if we could get her out in 15 minutes. Having worked with her before, we told the crew to be there early. She arrived around 6:30am in full glam, hit her mark and nailed it – including a sweet wink to the camera at the end – and was out the door at 6:45am. Well before her call time. Someone on her team Then-BMLG's Mike Rittberg and Scott shared that her urgency Borchetta with the Rockstar arose from wanting to take her husband Carl to breakfast. No fuss, no complaints about the hour, just total professionalism wrapped around the fact that nothing was going to get in the way of that breakfast. That’s Dolly in a nutshell to me. She could deliver at the highest level, in any situation, at any hour, and never once let the work supplant what mattered most. A lot of people talk about her work ethic. Fewer people saw how disciplined she was about protecting her personal life right alongside it. Results Global’s Jackie Campbell: The first time I met Dolly in person was Feb. 2020 on a music video set. Someone handed me a phone to take their picture with Dolly. As I was backing up to get the shot – apparently straight into an outdoor propane heater – Dolly yelled at me to stop, saving me from catching my hair, and potentially my entire body, on fire. It’s funny to think no one else noticed before she did, but that was Dolly – ever observant, kind, and thinking of other people first. Big Machine’s Scott Borchetta: When we were doing the Rockstar album, management called eight days before release because Dolly wanted to visit stores to see where the album would be positioned before it came out. And she wants to start at 4am. Okay! So the team started dialing up the accounts: Walmart, Target, Barnes & Noble, Cracker Barrel and Dollar General. Each manager, said, “You’re bringing Dolly Parton? Yes, we’ll be in early.” So there we were at 4am at the Walmart in Cool Springs. The first thing she did is go to the music section, pick up the album and start mugging for the cameras. Target was next, and she had it all so thought out. Three guys from her team held up a curtain for her to change behind so she had a different look at each store. At Barnes & Noble, she saw a Dolly doll, picked it up and turned to us to say, “Is there anything we don’t sell?” She charmed everyone, took pictures with all the managers and staff and the whole thing was signed, sealed and delivered by 8am. And it was the biggest first-week sales of her career. Ironically, her last three No. 1 records were all on the Mainstream Rock charts.

August 31, 2026 Producer Robert Deaton: Dolly called me out of the blue in 1991, having liked some of the music videos I’d done. She wanted to work with me and George Flanigen on the “Silver And Gold” video. Usually, once you start working with an artist, you kind of forget “who they are,” but I could never shake that with her. Even after all the years and multiple videos, the fact that Dolly was in the room never wore off. Having worked with her musically for so long, when she hosted the CMA Awards I saw a completely different side. Of course, she’s incredibly professional. With Jackie Campbell Early. Open and extremely nice to everyone in the room. But also very pointedly there to work. What I learned, though, is how creatively spontaneous she was. She would come up with jokes on the spot one after another. You think you’ve seen everything, but then you see that. Results Global’s Katrina Maddox: My mom tells me I was completely uninterested in watching anything on TV as a toddler, until I discovered The Dolly Show, her 1980s variety show. Whenever With Katrina Maddox the opening song “Love Is Like a Butterfly” came on, I would plop down in front of the TV and stay there until it was over. I was enamored. Not long after, I attended my first concert: Dolly and Porter Wagoner on the Grand Ole Opry. We were close to the front, and my mom was holding me up when Dolly looked down and winked at me from the stage. Fast-forward a couple of decades, and I found myself working for the Opry and lucky enough to witness several unforgettable Dolly moments. Eventually, I met my hero and she was just as magical in person. ACM CEO Emeritus Damon Whiteside: When she co-hosted the ACM Awards in Texas with Garth Brooks, I was sitting in the house watching her rehearsal. When it wrapped, her manager Danny Nozell walked over and said, “Dolly wants to speak to you.” I was shocked and immediately started worrying that something was wrong. She had a quick-change tent to the side of the stage, which Danny opened and gestured for me to go in. I remember being struck by how surreal it was. Dolly Parton! But there she was, and she said, “I’ve heard how hard you’ve worked on making all this happen, and I really wanted to tell you how much I appreciate all your efforts for this show. I’m excited about it.” That kind of thing almost never happens. For her to make a point to say that to me ... I’ll remember it for the rest of my life.

A lot of work went into the script, and she was involved every step of the way. Once dress rehearsal is over, the script is considered locked, and that’s the one they put in the prompter. But I guess as she was getting ready for the live show, she kept making changes in her mind. That’s how the famous “GOAT” joke happened, which she said stood for “Garth Organizes A Threesome.” Nobody knew that was coming, which is why Garth and Trisha were both bright red when she said it. No one but Dolly could pull that off. Consultant/writer Maurice Miner: When I was working with Dolly and her sister Rachel on Good Lookin’ Cookin’, Rachel said something that summed up so much of what we know of Dolly: “If she made a dime, she sent home a nickel.” She went on to add, “Whatever she has, she is more than willing to share – and does. Maybe that’s why God graced her with so much talent.” Another time, Dolly and I were pouring through edits and revisions of what would become Star of the Show. Somewhere around the point where the book noted her meeting Queen Elizabeth and guesting on a Cher TV special, I remarked how truly amazing it is to think of the places she’d been and the people she’d met. I was having a “moment” of feeling being one step away from so much history via the woman sitting next to me. She sat up in her chair, removed her glasses, looked me straight in the eye and said, “You know, it really is. I never could’ve imagined it.” I’ll never forget feeling like I’d been given a glimpse of Dolly seeing herself as we do. UMPG/Nashville’s Troy Tomlinson: I showed up early to the 2007 Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony at New York’s Marriott Marquis, but there was nobody at the check-in tables and I started to worry I’d missed it. So I opened the door to the ballroom and at the very front I see a handful of people and a head that looks like it belongs to Dolly, who was getting an award. As I walked down there, her producer Steve Buckingham saw me, invited me over and introduced us. Dolly said, “You sound country. Sit down here. Where are you from?” I told her I was from Portland, TN. She replied, “Exit 117 on I-65; last town before you go into Kentucky.” I asked her how in the world she knew that. “Honey, do you know how many times I’ve been sitting on a bus looking out the window on Interstate 65 to go play for people up north? I memorized every mile marker.” I heard this said and I think it’s true: If you didn’t love Dolly, you’re probably incapable of loving anyone. –Chuck Aly
