Colleagues and friends share favorite memories of the late Country Radio Hall of Famer Bill Cody (Chronicle 6/10):
• WSM-AM/Nashville’s Nan Kelley: This man was a treasure to no telling how many listeners, artists, colleagues, his precious family and to those of us who were lucky enough to call him friend. I called him Brother Bill. And he called me “Bass’s Belly Kelley.” We did a lot of TV shoots at GAC and on one, I noticed my self-tanner didn’t quite take well on my arm. I was showing Bill how bad it looked when he said, “Goodness girl, the underneath of your forearm is so white it looks like a bass’s belly!”
We all fell apart, and I think it may have made the edit on TV. So that was my name from then on.
• The Grand Ole Opry’s Dan Rogers: As I shared when dedicating Saturday’s show to Bill, I believe he perfectly personified the Grand Ole Opry. Bill nurtured new stars, celebrated superstars and revered the legends of our genre. He both looked toward the future and recalled our past with the same big ole Bill Cody smile. The outpouring of love for Bill in the last weeks of his life and since we lost him last Tuesday has been amazing, but not surprising. Everyone loved Bill Cody. Everyone has a Bill Cody story. For me personally, it was Bill who – not too long after I began working at the Opry as an intern in 1998 –gave me the nickname “Opry Dan.” I mean, how did I get so lucky? Of all the people who’d come and gone from the Opry in its 70+ years, “Opry Dan” somehow rolled off Cody’s tongue. He and his friend Hazel Smith then called me that without fail until others began following suit. Bill always asked about my parents by name, and he wouldn’t just casually ask for an update from my hometown. Instead, he’d do it with his signature style. Something like, “What do you say, Big Boy? What’s the latest from Xenia, IL – self-proclaimed Garden Capital of the World?” As I said, I am far from alone. Everyone loved Bill because he was that way with everybody. All of us could write volumes and volumes about Bill, but I’ll simply say he was the best friend the Opry could have.”
• Television producer Bret Wolcott: He was one of the few people I know who was not only living their dream, but also seemed to wake up every day being both grateful and in awe of that. And that showed in his

How To Super-Size A Radio Tour
TLDR: Six shows, two days, two cities, two stations and one fastball. iHeartMedia’s WPOC/Baltimore & WMZQ/Washington, DC helped Big Machine’s The Band Perry make a lot of noise in those two markets last week.
Regional SVPP Jeff Kapugi says, “Every event exceeded expectations.” And, with the right kind of artists, some version could be replicable.

The plan began when the label’s Scott Borchetta and Jimmy Harnen asked Kapugi to join a Teams call. “Of course I thought they were looking to put the screws to me on a song,” Kapugi says, “but they let me know they appreciated my support of TBP and wondered if I had any ideas for pouring gasoline on the fire.”
Harnen and Borchetta were looking for “boots on the ground” solutions that reflected their own early days in music. “Scott suggested we take the band into the Baltimore-Washington corridor and build excitement through a series of pop-up performances,” Harnen says. “Jeff loved the concept of bringing the band directly to the fans, but he expanded on it by suggesting that we combine the live appearances with radio support – having the band on-air in the mornings and promoting the events in advance to maximize attendance and engagement.”
TBP joined morning hosts Michael J. and Candace Dold on WPOC, and the former on his WMZQ midday show. “We followed it up with a week of intense promotion, and did a little tradio for rooms and transportation,” Kapugi says. “The venues did this for the exposure of a big event and we delivered.”
On Tuesday (6/9), TBP started on the WPOC morning show at 7:30am, followed by local shows at 12:30pm (The Rec Room, Towson), 4:15pm (Power Plant Live, Baltimore) and 8:30pm (Cancun Cantina, Hanover). The next day (6/10), it was 12:30pm at the iHeartRadio Soundstage in Rockville, MD; 4:30pm at Starr Hills Brewery in Tysons, VA; and an 8pm show at Pearl Street Warehouse in the District. All shows were free and well received.

“Every venue was packed, the energy was incredible and fans were singing along not only to ‘Psychological’ but throughout the band’s entire set,” Harnen says. “The reaction exceeded our expectations in every way.”
“Major kudos to my marketing team, who handled logistics like pros,” says Kapugi. “I can’t thank Kimberly Perry, Johnny Costello, Scott, Jimmy, Big Machine and TBP’s management enough.”
Harnen says the label is looking to do similar TBP events in other markets, and Kapugi believes other artists could benefit from the concept, as well. “TBP’s familiarity helped for sure,” he says. “Not sure you can do this with a brand newbie. It takes the right act, the right venues and the right plan.”
As a bonus, the night before the Baltimore shows, The Band Perry were invited to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Orioles’ game. “Kimberly said, ‘I don’t think I can reach home plate,’ so Johnny did it,” Harnen says. “He threw a strike!”

Following its No. 25 debut last week, Taylor Swift’s “I Knew It, I Knew You” jumps to No. 17 this week, making it the fastest climbing release from a female vocalist since Gretchen Wilson’s “All Jacked Up” reached No. 17 in its second week on August 12, 2005.

Sometime around 2008, Bill and I were hanging out backstage at the Opry. We had just finished having a great conversation with Ricky Skaggs, who regaled us with stories about Bill Monroe. When Bill Cody and I left
the room, I said something about what a gift it was to be able to hear those great stories of a bluegrass legend. Bill looked at me and said, “It’s our job, you know. It’s not just our blessing and gift, but our responsibility to pass them on. That’s how this works. Bill Monroe tells the stories to Ricky, and Ricky passes them on. Porter tells his stories to Marty and Vince, and they pass them on. Most of those stories will never get written down, so they need to be passed on. That’s how country music thrives for generations.”
• CMA’s Sarah Trahern: I first met Bill Cody in an RV on the infield of Atlanta Motor Speedway during Countryfest 1996. Rain delays gave us a few unexpected hours around the motorhome table, talking about life, family, and music. By the end of that afternoon, I felt like I knew [his wife] Rebecca and the kids through Bill’s stories. He had that gift – making you feel connected to the people and things he loved most. A decade later, our paths crossed again at GAC, where Bill hosted our Master Series program. His deep love for country music and the artists who created it was evident in every interview he conducted. Two moments, both in the Rotunda of the Country Music Hall of Fame, remain especially memorable.

The first was an interview with Eddy Arnold about a year before his passing. In the middle of sharing a story, Eddy suddenly broke into an a cappella rendition of “Cattle Call.” The entire crew stood transfixed, many of us with tears in our eyes, as Bill gently guided what would become Eddy’s final interview. It was a masterclass in storytelling, respect, and grace.
The second was the day George Jones died. Bill and I sat cross-legged on the Rotunda floor, mapping out who we should call to share memories and reflections. His encyclopedic knowledge of country music history was invaluable, but what made Bill special was that he never wore that knowledge heavily. He was as authentic and down-to-earth as anyone from Cross Plains, TN could be.
Over the years, I often called him after his morning radio shift to talk about the artists he’d had on the show and, just as importantly, to get an update on Rebecca and the kids. Bill had a remarkable ability to bridge generations of country music fans. He was equally at home discussing the legends who built the genre and the newcomers carrying it forward.
We lost Bill far too soon. His voice, his knowledge, his kindness and his unwavering love for country music leave an irreplaceable void. Our hearts are broken, but we are grateful for the countless memories and the lasting impact he made on everyone fortunate enough to know him. CAC
