PPM: A November Not To Remember

With so much happening at a breakneck pace the last several weeks, it would be easy to overlook the state of the format in the month of November. In fact, it might be for the best if you did. Even with a record poor showing overall, however, Country also had its share of notably strong performances on the station level. The November survey started Oct. 8 and concluded the day after Election Day. For that period, aggregate Country shares in PPM markets stood at its lowest total (excluding Holiday books) since the start of PPM measurement, with four stations setting new low water marks. And for the first time in the PPM era, the format experienced a non-Holiday month without a single market being led by a Country station. The apparent culprit: News-Talk. Just how big were News-Talk’s gains for the month? The aggregate 6+ share for all PPM subscribing News-Talk stations in September was 577.5. October rose to 623.0 and, by November, that number had jumped to 658.0 – a 14% increase over two months. Conversely, the corresponding aggregate for Country trended 360.4 to 350.8 to 339.2 for a 5.8% decrease over the same span. Country wasn’t alone: AC and Classic Hits were down Rod Phillips 2% each during the same span, and Top 40 was off 3%. The decrease of those four formats nearly adds up to the increase for News-Talk. November’s downturn was not limited to just share. Country Aircheck analyzed the cume for the top 50 stations in each format, with Country’s average dropping 2.5% from September to November. Classic Hits and Top 40 saw drops of 2.6% and 2.2%, respectively, over that span. AC was up 2.1%, but no format came close to the cume jump of News-Talk, which expanded 5% over two months. Battlin’ Brands: Country’s November numbers may be low overall, but iHeartMedia EVP/Country Programming Strategy Rod Phillips doesn’t see a concerning trend. (continued on page 6)

WI TH An inside look at how Records’ Chris Bandi is spending his Quaran-Time: We had a bunch of tour dates that had to be canceled or rescheduled, but have been trying to find new and creative ways to stay in front of fans and hopefully capture new ones! I’ve been fortunate lately in getting back out to meet with our friends at Country radio via a socially-distanced radio tour — playing in parking lots and cul-de-sacs as opposed to conference rooms. It’s been a little light at the end of the tunnel! I had a quarantine routine down until we started this radio tour back up. It was full of Netflix and Postmates. But, recently, I’m home maybe Saturday and Sunday, so it consists of spending time with my girlfriend and dogs. That and doing all my laundry for the next week. My girlfriend and I have been quarantined together with our two dogs. Taking time in our own little parts of the house had been very beneficial. She was working from home, and I’m writing from home, so during the day we try to make it as “normal” as possible. I’ll go upstairs to write, and she’ll stay downstairs while she’s working or on calls. I just ordered a keyboard online, so I’m going to try to learn how to play the piano. Or at least try to get good enough that I can fake my way through a song. I’ve been doing a lot of writing on

Zoom. The ability to still get on and have that interaction has been great, although nothing really compares to being in the room. I’ve also had a recording set-up that I’ve been telling myself for years that I was going to learn. This has forced me to get it all figured out. I hadn’t really done any social media live streams before this, so I didn’t know what to expect. I love how intimate and relaxed it is. It’s been awesome to see people hop on that we’ve met out on the road and read their comments about how they’re doing. We try out some new songs while we’re on there and get real-time feedback, which is incredible! I hopped on the bandwagon and watched Tiger King in one night. I’m a big fan of Ozark, so thankfully the third season of that came out in late March. I recently started watching The Undoing, and it’s got me hooked! I tried to start a petition to get Netflix to release the new seasons of You and Stranger Things a little early, but no one got back to me. We were only supposed to be home five full days in March, so it’s nice to get to spend a little extra time with my girlfriend and dogs. Even though it’s socially distanced, it’s been a blessing

“It really comes down to the old adage – there are only 100 shares,” he says. “Only makes sense that the increased interest in politics would benefit News-Talk stations, and those shares have to come from other stations and formats.” He also points to a solid Persons 18-49 performance for WUBL/Atlanta, which ranked eighth in the demo, and WGAR/Cleveland, which was No. 1 in that demo. “They have had a big year,” Phillips says. Elsewhere in iHeartCountry, KSD/St. Louis has been on an unprecedented rise over the last several months, climbing 4.3 to 7.0 to 7.7 – the highest share for any Country station in St Louis since 1997. Likewise at KNIX/Phoenix, where November was its third consecutive month leading the market among Persons 25-54. “We made some adjustments in 2017 that built the foundation for our growth in 2020,” says PD Steve Geofferies. “We brought back ‘90s music, made some talent adjustments in key dayparts and created Steve a can’t-miss concert series. When the Geofferies pandemic hit, we knew we had to be more than a radio station. Every weeknight for six months, [morning hosts] Tim, Ben & Brooke hosted an extra show – a nightly Facebook Live. They outworked everyone, and it paid off. We talk about the ‘extra’ that comes along with [our station]… this isn’t a tweak of music or well-placed music sweep. It’s about being more than just a radio station.” Where Country is solid in his purview, Charlie Cook Phillips points to “big brands with terrific execution. These are brands that can withstand some meter movement because they are likely to have a dynamic morning show and are the first choice for music in that market.” Noise Will Be Noise: At Cumulus, VP/Country Charlie Cook says, “We were very pleased with our News-Talk stations, of course, but three stations bucked the trend Travis Moon in November (which was really October): WDRQ/Detroit was up 11.1% P25-54, KSCS/Dallas rose 24.4% in that demo, and KUBL/Salt Lake City shot up 64.4%.”

KUBL PD Travis Moon attributes his team’s success not to contesting and marketing, but to basics. “Since the pandemic started, we’ve been pretty focused on adding up personal connections with listeners,” he says. “I am really proud of my airstaff understanding that we need to find more genuine ways to be important in our listeners’ lives. Lexi & Banks and Matt Ramone have been remarkable in understanding that mission. There’s just so much distraction out there that personal connections seem to be more powerful than trying to out-noise the noise.” One station that has benefited from some extra noise – and is working to continue to capitalize on it – is Entercom’s WDAF/Kansas City. PD Mike Kennedy has been champing Mike Kennedy at the bit since last December, when WDAF snagged the broadcast rights to the NFL’s defending champion Kansas City Chiefs (CAT 12/06/19). Chiefs broadcasts frequently propelled their previous flagship – Classic Rock KCFX – to the top of the market, so expectations were high. “Our job is to introduce that huge new cume [a rise of over 16%] to what we have to offer,” says Kennedy. Beyond just integrating talent and music promos into the play-by-play coverage, WDAF has also put together pre-game programming featuring some of country’s biggest stars. “Kenny [Chesney], who’s close with [Chiefs’ head coach] Andy Reid, kicked off the season with Andy stories. [It’s] different than [the] usual pre-game show. The results have been building each month of the season.” In November, WDAF rose from six to third overall with a 6.5 share among persons 6+ (its second largest PPM share ever) and finished No. 1 among persons 18-34 and 18-49. Strength in key demos likely persists across the format, even if the boxcar numbers are disappointing this month. “It’s a little misleading if you look at just 12+,” says Entercom VP/Country Tim Roberts. “Many of our brands posted strong Novembers in W25-54. Perennial market leaders WUSY, WBEE and WGGY also posted very strong books across all demos.
