The Year In Music & More

River House/Columbia’s Luke Combs is three-for-three, topping Country Aircheck/Mediabase data as the most-heard artist at Country radio, as he was in 2019 and 2020. Rounding out the top five are Luke Bryan, Thomas Rhett, Florida Georgia Line and Kane Brown. Miranda Lambert is the mostheard female artist ahead of Gabby Barrett, with FGL topping Duo/Group, followed by Dan + Shay. Niko Moon is the most-heard new artist, and Rhett’s “What’s Your Country Song” is the most-heard song. Now at 13 years running, Capitol/ Luke Combs Nashville is the No. 1 airplay label, followed by BMLG Records, Broken Bow, Columbia and Big Loud. The top 10 chart share labels, top performing artists and the Top 100 songs of the year are in the December print edition of Country Aircheck, out later this week. (Note all data for the 2021 chart year reflects airplay between Nov. 8, 2020 and Nov. 6, 2021.) Beyond the year Miranda Lambert in music, the issue’s Top Stories looks at the resumption of touring, changes at radio, ratings and market share for the format and genre, the future of awards shows and questions still facing Morgan Wallen. CMA winners discuss their big week in Nashville, and label promotion teams tout their 2022 music priorities. Finally, in The Interview, Academy of Country Music CEO Damon Whiteside Thomas Rhett takes readers inside his two-year-tenure, which has yet to find a predictable groove as it races toward the first major streaming-only awards show next year in Las Vegas. “Everything is a first,” he says. “We had to figure out how Lifting Lives was going to support people through the pandemic and raise money for that. Radiothons: Country Radio Strong

Country radio showed just how impactful it can be this past week, as dozens of stations aired their annual radiothons, the vast majority benefitting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Across the 52 stations for which Country Aircheck collected data, more than $13 million dollars was raised for good causes. Radiothons are demanding and require long hours from staff. They can also be emotionally draining, but this list (next page) is proof positive that all the effort is worth it. Country Aircheck salutes all those involved in radiothon efforts for a job well done.

OFF THE RECORD Country Aircheck goes Off The Record with Warner/WMN’s Drew Parker: What I’ve learned during the pandemic is to be patient … with everything. I’ve learned to prepare for everything and have those decisions already slightly mapped out, no matter what the situation is. Warren Buffet said it best: “Someone is sitting in the shade DREW PARKER today, because someone else planted a tree a long time ago.” I’m keeping in touch with fans via social media by making sure to message and comment back to any and every fan who has a question. That’s very important. But also, just posting videos and doing livestreams to check in from time to time and say, “thank you for everything you do for me.” I grew up listening to WKHX and WUBL/Atlanta. I’ll never forget where I was the first time I heard myself on the radio. I was driving in my truck with my little girl and wife heading to dinner in Nashville. I could probably take you to the exact spot I pulled off I-65 to listen. “While You’re Gone” is my version of “Every Light In The House Is On.” One of those songs that can be a sad country song or can be listened to in a very literal, comical sense. The most redneck thing I’ve done lately is shotgun a beer with Atlanta Braves pitcher AJ Minter. Trying to pick one song I wish I’d written is the hardest question ever. There’s so many, and the answer changes a lot for me, but right now I’d have to say “There Goes My Life” by Kenny Chesney. I’ve been gone a lot this year playing shows and visiting radio stations, and every time I get home, I swear my little girl has matured and grown so much just in a matter of days. I can really relate to that song right now. My favorite song on the radio – any format – right now is Jordan Davis’ “Buy Dirt.” That song is really special and something so many people can relate to. I’m bingeing You on Netflix. I feel late to the Yellowstone game, but I think that’s something I’m gonna have to try and binge next.

Play Limits: Mediabase will credit a maximum of two plays on any individual song across any 60-minute period. Spin Discrepancies: The deadline for submitting any spin discrepancies that affect the Country Aircheck/Mediabase Published Country Chart is 5pm CT Sunday each week. Please direct all queries to mbaction@mediabase.com. Chart Year: The 2022 Country Aircheck/Mediabase chart year began with airplay from the week of Nov. 7-13, 2021 (11/15 chart), it concludes with airplay for the week of Nov. 6-12, 2022 (11/14 chart).

Chart Chat

Congratulations to Dustin Lynch, MacKenzie Porter, Lee Adams, Shelley Hargis Gaines, Renee Leymon and the Broken Bow promotion team on landing at No. 1 this week with “Thinking ‘Bout You.” The song is Lynch’s eighth chart-topper and lands Porter her first U.S. No. 1. Porter also becomes the second Canadian female atop the chart this calendar year (joining Tenille Arts), a feat that hasn’t occurred since 1998, when Terri Clark and Shania Twain each landed No. 1s. Songwriters are Andy Mackenzie Porter Albert, Hunter Phelps, Will Weatherly and Dustin Lynch and Lynch. And kudos on a fond farewell for Josh Easler and the Arista crew for scoring 53 adds for “No Hard Feelings” by Old Dominion to lead the final CA/MB Add Board of the year.

News & Notes

Artists Wynonna Judd, Thompson Square and Terri Clark and SiriusXM’s Storme Warren are among those taking part in Pawlidays, a fundraising campaign sponsored by Tito’s Handmade Vodka benefitting Nashville’s Pet Community Center, a nonprofit veterinary clinic. Donate here. Actor/musician Dennis Quaid has partnered with wife Laura Quaid and producer Ben Howard to launch his Bonniedale production company with the first feature film being a biopic on the late Country Music Hall of Famer Charley Pride entitled American Pride. Circle Network is partnering with the United Services Organizations (USO) to broadcast the first-ever Opry Live: USO Holiday Special Dec. 18 at 9pm ET. The one-hour broadcast is hosted by Kellie Pickler and features Lauren
