Country’s Sweet Spot for Powers

Average Share

In September, radio pundit Sean Ross analyzed the relationship between power rotations and the ratings success of Top 40 stations in PPM markets. What he found was an eye-opening inverse relationship between the number of spins-per-week for power songs and station ratings. Those Top 40s playing powers more than 130 times per week averaged a three share, while those playing them less than 100 times POWER SWEET SPOT? per week averaged a 5.5 share. The article spurred 4.9 Country Aircheck 4.8 to perform a similar analysis for 4.0 Country stations. While Country and Top 40 are much different animals, Country has trended toward higher power numbers over the past (19 Stations) (30 Stations) (19 Stations) Spins of most-played power decade by an influx of Top 40 programmers and adjustments brought on by PPM strategies. For this analysis, Country Aircheck looked at 68 current-based Nielsen subscribing Country stations across the 48 PPM markets. Each station’s 6+ share for the September survey (Aug. 13-Sept. 9) was compared with spins for the station’s most-played song during Nielsen’s September Week 2 (Aug. 20-26) – thus avoiding the potential spin impact of special programming around the Labor Day weekend. Among the stations analyzed, the range of spins for the mostplayed title varied from 88 to 40, with the average most-played power getting approximately 64 spins per week. (continued on page 10)

Eddie Hatfield Hangs It Up

KJJY/Des Moines morning host Eddie Hatfield hung up his headphones Nov. 20 and drove off into the sunset – literally – after 34 years ... and five days (CAT 10/20). As he and wife Gail set off on a celebratory road trip, Hatfield paused to debrief with Country Aircheck. “When I was seven, my mom called in to a radio contest in Denver. She handed me the phone and, when I heard my voice played back, I knew I wanted to be on the radio. We moved a lot as a kid, so Eddie Man Of Mine: I wanted to stay in one place and build Eddie and Gail my career at one station. I satisfied my Hatfield ambition early and held on tightly.

“I’ve worked with ‘Big John’ McCoy for 33 of my 34 years here. Our chemistry and timing are so natural we can do the show without ever seeing one another. I’m thankful to have had such an amazing partner, and I am so excited for and proud of him as he continues on with the show. “In the heyday of the big boom, we went from an eight to a 32 share in mornings. The music at that time was absolutely fantastic. I’ve been lucky enough during my career to serve as MD, as well, and had the chance Partners In Time: “Big John” McCoy (l) and Hatfield to meet just about everyone. I shared fried mushrooms on a stick with Kenny Chesney, and I went to a record release event for Alan Jackson in the basement of a record store back before either were stars. I’ve also gone to Reba McEntire’s house for lunch and played drums for her during a performance there. “I’m also the reason our cluster got delay buttons! It was around 1988, and we were playing John Denver’s ‘Back Home Again.’ I started talking to Big John, who was running the board and hadn’t shut off my mic, and said, ‘Some shithead almost ran me off the road over on 30th Street yesterday!’ We carried on our conversation, and then the hotline rang. It was my GM, who said, ‘So, some shithead almost ran you off the road on 30th Street?’ I asked how he knew that, and he said, ‘You’re on the air right now!’ The next week, a magic box called the dump button showed up. “The Iowa State Fair, KJJY and I have almost become a single unit. I dove into that role wholeheartedly over the past 33 years. One year, headliner Ricky Van Shelton got sick and cancelled at the last minute, but the Fair had a replacement – some kid named Garth Brooks. I met him backstage and still have the Ricky Van Shelton ticket with Garth’s autograph. He was a great guy and I thought, ‘I hope he makes it.’ After introducing him, I stood side-stage as he opened with ‘Not Counting You.’ His microphone didn’t work for half of the song, and I decided to leave. The next morning, Big John said, ‘That was the best show I’ve ever seen in my life.’ “I had the opportunity to be in the crowd when Tim McGraw debuted ‘Don’t Take The Girl’ at the 1994 CRS New Faces Show. I snagged a cassette from my Curb rep that night and played it on-air as soon as we got home. I’m one of only a couple hundred people who can say they witnessed the birth of a superstar, and I still get goosebumps thinking about it. I saw Tim on his last tour and wanted to tell him that was the moment I’ll cherish

most from my career, but when I got backstage all I said was, ‘I’ve been at the radio station for 33 years!’ So I blew my chance to thank him and tell him what it meant to me. “I was a raging alcoholic for many years and made a lot of mistakes along the way. I was very open on-air about my alcoholism and my journey to sobriety. Throughout the years, I’ve had calls from people who told me I was the reason they had gotten clean. That, in turn, helped me keep going. This career helped me be a positive influence on people, not just through my sobriety, but via fundraising efforts for charities including The Compassion Fund, for which we have raised more than $1 million. If I have a legacy, I hope that’s part of it, and I hope that radiothon continues on forever. “Part of my success was realizing I was there to make sure our clients sold more than before they bought advertising. Then they can build their businesses, put food on their tables, spend money in our community, and continue to buy the advertising that keeps my career going. Especially in the world we are living in now, entertainment and sales go hand-in-hand. Understanding that is important for anyone wanting to have longevity in this industry. “This job has also given me some of the most important people in my life. [Former KJJY PD] Beverlee Brannigan is my best female friend, and [former KJJY PD] Andy Elliott is my best male friend. Beverlee has also guided my career, backed me and believed in me when no one else did. Gail says my friendship with Big John is closer to a marriage than an on-air partnership. I had the opportunity to spend the last Kenny Way You Want It: Kenny Chesney part of my career (second from right) visits with thenworking with her, KJJY staffers Hatfield, Carol Doser and too, as she stepped Beverlee Brannigan (l-r). in to help when Big John got sick. “No one is mad at each other, and no one forced me out the door. There’s no animosity or hard feelings on either side, which is a rare way to leave radio these days. I will always consider myself part of the KJJY team, and if they need someone to fill in at some point, I’d be happy to help. But I won’t be setting an early morning alarm anymore.” Reach Hatfield here, and check out tributes from colleagues and listeners on his Facebook page here. –Monta Vaden

WI TH DeMarcus Family Rules’ Allison DeMarcus shares how she and husband Jay are spending their Quaran-Time: I didn’t realize life would ever be this drastically different. I’m a creature of habit, grounded in deep traditions, and quarantine has and still challenges us every single day! Never in a million years did I think I would homeschool my children, high five Jay when Clorox wipes were available at Walgreens, adopt two new dogs and have Jay home off the road consistently for the first time in our 16-year marriage. I’m just glad Jay at least still acts like he loves being at the house with all of us, even when he desperately misses playing music. Our quarantine life consists of Jay cooking any meal that does not require the use of a microwave, me feeding puppies every two hours so no one develops hypoglycemia and our beautiful children asking 9,362,874 questions about each and every statement we make to them or to each other. I’ve done more math problems in the past eight months than I did in my entire educational career. I know my AP Math teacher, Dr. Don Newman, is rolling over in his grave. I have learned that if we can survive

quarantine, parenting our children and caring for our aging parents without barely leaving the house, then we can make it through anything! The release of DeMarcus Family Rules during the pandemic was a fun distraction. After not wearing mascara and only wearing bed clothes for six months, it was an exciting change of pace. We were thrilled to share what we had filmed with everyone finally and were elated by people’s response. I was worried that people wouldn’t realize everything had been filmed prior to the pandemic in October through December 2019 and what their reaction would be. Fortunately, the majority of those watching understood the timeline based on the events occurring in our lives at that time. We hope everyone tells their friends to watch and messages @netflix to tell them we need to shoot more! Madeline and I started doing “Paint With Diamonds” of some of her favorite “sweet treat” designs to put up in her room. It’s like pointillism with rhinestones and illuminates the issue of my failing eyesight! Quarantine has undoubtedly hindered my ability to be productive. It has only made me hungry! I’m bingeing DeMarcus Family Rules

Country’s Sweet Spot for Powers

(continued from page 1)

This breakout looked amazingly balanced, with 30 stations spinning their powers in the 60-69 range and 19 stations each on either side of the median; however, those stations on the high side of the 60s saw a much lower average share than those with less than 70 spins per week. Comparing shares, the average for the 68 stations analyzed was 4.6, with Hall WCTK/Providence leading the pack with a 10.3 share. The trend here indicated the larger the share, the fewer the spins on powers as stations with more than a 5.5 share averaged 62.5 spins, while stations below a four-share averaged 66 spinsper-week. It is important to note the outliers here, as many of the stations with the highest shares – including WCTK – are in markets with little, if any, significant format competition. That begs another question: In markets where there is a format battle, were any trends evident between competing stations? Of the 68 analyzed stations, there are 23 markets where two separately owned stations are in a format battle, while 18 are markets where one station

WI TH the studio, I get in a workout. Fun fact: I was on season four of The Biggest Loser, so I’m always trying to figure out a way to like working out. Ha! I wish I was one of those people who wanted to run five miles at 6am and come home to make something crafty; however, I am neither! I did get all new furniture, though, and did it on a budget. That’s kind of a hobby, right? Radio tends to do the same things over and over again – that’s a whole different conversation – but this forced everyone in the entertainment field to think outside the box, which has been cool. Some people still think social media is the devil, but it’s all about how you use it! I think it’s fun, it’s educational and it makes a lot of people feel less alone. The first thing I want to do when everything reopens is go on a trip – in a plane – to somewhere with a beach. Oh, and I want to stop in Nashville on the way home! I’ve been doing a lot of binge-watching and reading. A lot! I’ve watched All American, Virgin River, Sweet Magnolias, Normal People, Emily In Paris, Hollywood, Queer Eye, Tiger King and Love Is Blind. Some of my favorite books have been Open Book by Jessica Simpson; Big Summer by Jennifer Weiner; Do You Mind If I Cancel? by Gary Janetti; The Wedding Date, The Proposal and The Wedding Party by Jasmine Guillory; The Hating Game by Sally Thorne; and One To Watch by Kate Stayman-London. I’ve loved having more time to read ... it makes me feel smarter! I also spend a lot of time educating myself about what was and is going on in the world. It’s important to understand what other people who aren’t like you are going through. Knowledge is

While the relationship between power rotations and ratings among Country stations did not vary as dramatically as for Top 40 stations, there were some subtle yet consistent differences. As maximum power spins increased, shares tended to decline. There were also minor differences in competitive situations, with leading stations spinning their powers slightly less frequently than their rivals. Does this mean stations powering titles over 70 or 80 times per week should slow them down? Not necessarily. As veteran consultant Joel Raab notes, “When you’re a start-up, you’ll often spin your powers faster in order to attract new cume. When people are checking you out, you want to make sure they’re always hearing one of the top songs.” While every competitive situation is unique, what is most evident from the data is the uniformity of the format. Of the stations analyzed, 44% played their powers in the range of 60-69 times per week. Expand that range to 55-74 spins per week, and you have a full 75% of the sample. “In the PPM era, we learned that the audience listens for a shorter period time than we thought they did during the diary era; therefore, we needed to speed up rotations,” explains Raab. “But, if you play them too fast, you reach diminishing returns.” After more than a decade of PPM experience, both Raab and Country radio in general agree, “There is a sweet spot for powers.” –Chris Huff

power, and our brains can learn something new every minute of every day and never reach capacity. Early on, I was treating myself to way too many snacks! I’d hit up Trader Joe’s for milk chocolate covered pretzels, Scandinavian swimmers and too much Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia. I also ordered mozzarella cheese fries a little too frequently from the pizza place down the street and gained the “quarantine 15” and then some! In September, I got myself together and started a new program called “Profile By Sanford” brought to me by the station. I’m always careful about what I promote, because I don’t want to go on-air and tell people they need to lose weight. It’s important we acknowledge every body is beautiful and different, and we should prioritize health. I wasn’t eating well, so I needed a reset. This has me focusing on eating a ton of vegetables; my go-to snack is cocktail cucumbers sliced in spears with Everything But The Bagel seasoning and dipped in hummus. A day in the self-isolated life of Beasley WXTU/Philadelphia afternoon personality Nicole Michalik: I’m single with no kids and live in a Center City Philadelphia apartment. My best friend lives one floor below me, so I have someone to hang out with, but then we can go back to our own spaces. I never feel completely isolated. Not being able to go out to lunch or dinner, hit up Soul Cycle or take in events in the city was quite a shock at first, but I’ve also enjoyed not feeling pressure to get dressed up, make sure I did my hair and makeup and get a fresh manicure! I have continued going into the studio to broadcast live daily, and it has been amazing to take calls from front line workers and those working from home. Listeners being able to call or text the station and have someone answer is a game changer, especially for those who live alone. The biggest change has been the lack of concerts, events and interactions with listeners and artists. In March, we had shirts made that said “925XTU Biggest Summer Ever,” because it was supposed to be the most event-filled summer in Philly. [Editor’s Note: Are these shirts still available, or were they all sold on eBay?] Each morning, I check emails and socials while watching The Today Show before making coffee and getting back in bed. I do a fun bit on Instagram called Coffee Under The Covers, which started more than a year ago with me in bed talking about random things. People seem to love it, and I enjoy having that time to connect with listeners, especially now. Afterwards, I do show prep and my blog posts, answer emails, take care of any business at hand, and before I head to
