Silverfish: Business Unusual
Though Big D & Bubba’s Derek “Big D” Haskins and Sean “Bubba” Powell have been teamed for more than two decades and will celebrate 22 years of syndication next week, the pair and producer Patrick Thomas did not set out on their own until eight years ago (CAT 9/10/13). Thomas and Jessica “Carsen” Humphreville, who now serve as Pres. and Dir./Programming of Silverfish Media, respectively, join the duo in sharing the company’s story – which most recently celebrated adding WKDF/ Nashville as an affiliate. “Everything started with Derek Haskins the three of us [Haskins, Powell and Thomas] deciding to strike out on our own, away from Premiere, so that we could work for ourselves,” explains Thomas. “It Jessica Humphreville wasn’t that we were thinking of expanding to Sean Powell additional shows or dayparts, but we believed we could create exceptional content with fantastic partners and super-serve affiliates within a boutique company.” Upon the 2013 launch, the Silverfish team partnered with Compass Networks Founder/CEO Peter Kosann for distribution; secured Albright & O’Malley & Brenner’s Becky Brenner as a consultant; and contracted Katie Cline Patrick Thomas Moore, Mike Buckner and David Angell as Mgr./Business, engineer and production/ voiceover artist, respectively. “Mike conceptualized and built our studios from the ground up, and with that, Silverfish Media was officially born,” Thomas says. Cody Alan On Listening & Writing
Premiere’s CMT After MidNite host Cody Alan released his memoir, Hear’s The Thing: Lessons On Listening, Life & Love Nov. 9 amid a week that also saw him picking up his first CMA Broadcast Award for Daily National Personality of the Year. He unpacked the inspiration and process for his first book with Country Aircheck. How did you settle on a title and theme for the project? I knew I had a story to tell that started with growing up loving music and radio, and I realized there was a theme of listening that ran throughout. Listening is key to creating content but also applies to having to listen to my own heart in my career when deciding the path I wanted to take, and in my personal life and finding love. Aside from listening, other themes include faith, family and fearlessness. Were you at all concerned about sharing Cody Alan some of your more personal beliefs?

Well, now the second book will need to be called Faith, Family And Fearlessness! I can only relate this to an artist who puts together an album and has a release date, because you hope people will respond in a positive way. I’ve always used faith – church, a belief in myself, or intuition – when making decisions. Having a north star is so important and powerful, whether it be a god, the universe, or your own intuition. This is my life in print; I shared insecurities and showed vulnerabilities, which can always be scary. But when you are vulnerable, you instantly make a human connection with whoever is reading or listening. How long did it take you to write? I started compiling the list of stories I’d like to share in 2016 and, once I came out in 2017, I knew I had a unique perspective from which to begin. I had more time during the pandemic to put fingers-to-laptop, as it were, and to concentrate on something outside of my normal day job. Writing also helped me stay busy and feel useful. I was able to finish and put it in the crockpot to simmer a bit before revisiting it to tie up any loose ends. What did you learn about your own journey during this process? I drew conclusions about how often I chose a left turn that would’ve not necessarily been the most logical. The road less traveled seems to work out for me, and I’m grateful for that. That’s relatable to those of us in radio, because we often realize our heart has to be part of the decision-making process, and that can sometimes defy logic. Why include the perspectives of your friends and family throughout the memoir? I wanted to ensure the stories I was telling lined up with how others remembered them. Having my ex-wife Theresa, my two kids, [Cumulus EVP/Content & Audience] Brian Philips, [friend and longtime producer] Brent “Dingo” O’Brien and others contribute – and including the foreword from Keith Urban – allowed me to include perspectives only they could tell. Hopefully, it also makes the book appealing to everyone from radio colleagues who want to know more about my career to listeners who are curious about my life and artist-related stories. You included interview tips in your narrative. How does that play into the theme? Interviewing has always been about listening for me, and in those moments, making a guest feel comfortable enough to want to share something more personal or fun – something that would
Page 5
be entertaining for the audience – while still feeling relaxed. My experiences over the years in radio have helped me build tactics to create those moments. Country music is a supporting character throughout. How did you curate the song selections? Radio folks still have a responsibility to help our listeners discover music – that’s part of the fun, so working in song lyrics to begin each chapter was one of my favorite elements of the writing process. I wanted to relate the lyrics I chose with the material I was covering. Some are familiar hits and some are deeper cuts, but these country songs all impart some bit of wisdom or are of particular importance to me. I hope readers will discover something in them, as well. What do you hope readers take away? It was a labor of love and a heartfelt journey that was based in truth and all the complexities of life. It’s a legacy I’m leaving behind for my kids, and I hope it’s something they are proud of. And, when people read it, I hope they say, “Cody is a great guy.” Get Hear’s The Thing in print or audiobook versions here; reach Alan here. –Monta Vaden
Chart Chat
Congratulations to the Zac Brown Band, Kristen Williams, Tom Martens, Michael Chase and the Zac Brown Band Warner/WAR promotion team on landing this week’s No. 1 song, “Same Boat.” This is the group’s 15th chart-topper, and their first since “Beautiful Drug” reached the peak in March 2016. Songwriters are Ben Simonetti, Jonathan Singleton and Brown. Kudos to RJ Meacham and the Curb team on scoring 48 adds for “Soul” by Lee Brice. This is Brice’s third consecutive release to top the CA/MB Add Board; the previous two each became No. 1 singles. Programming Note: KKGO/Los Angeles’ Friday flip to AllChristmas programming (CAT 11/29) adversely affects spin and points totals for some titles.

RCA’s Chris Young and Riser House/Columbia’s Mitchell Tenpenny will host afternoons and middays, respectively, for Mt.

OFF THE RECORD An Off The Record conversation with Cumulus KIIM/Tucson midday personality Krystal Pino: Growing up, I listened to Top 40 KQKS/Denver, and after getting my degree in PR & Broadcasting, I networked my tail off. I knew from a young age I wanted to be an entertainer. All of my friends and family have championed my career aspirations, but my mom will always be my driving force, and she pushes me to be the best version of myself on-air and off. Always surround yourself with KRYSTAL PINO people who will challenge you! Marie LeMaitre, who runs The Radio Fam, has helped me take my career to the next level, and my current boss, Buzz Jackson, has supported me from the moment we met. My favorite song on the radio in any format currently is “Buy Dirt” by Jordan Davis with Luke Bryan. It reinforces that the priorities in my life are the right ones. Country fans are loyal to the core, and as a personality, I know the relationships and bonds created with the fans are real. To push forward in radio, we have to “get digital.” I sang that to the tune of Olivia Newton-John’s “Let’s Get Physical,” and you should, too. Our content needs to expand outside of the speakers and meet those fans where they are, and managers need to support and encourage the relationship building that is happening on multiple platforms. During #SpookySzn, you could catch me watching any horror movie ... or maybe just Hocus Pocus on repeat. But, I promise since October is over, I’ll jump on the Ted Lasso bandwagon. My top five most influential artists, songs, albums or concerts are: 1. Kenny Rogers. I learned how to two-step dance to Kenny with my grandpa, and those are memories that will last a lifetime. 2. Stevie Wonder. Pick any album, because he’s perfection in musical form. 3. TLC. They helped this tomgirl believe she was beautiful and feminine, no matter what I was wearing. Embrace the true you – crazy, sexy, cool. 4. Earth, Wind & Fire. Their music will always be timeless. Do you want to see me dance? Just throw on “Serpentine Fire.” 5. John Mayer. Continuum got me through a major milestone in my life and was my soundtrack when I moved after college to pursue radio in Tucson. Reach Pino here.

Access With Kelly Sutton weekends, three original podcasts, live game nights and other multi-media pieces. Lawrence’s show was the first addition to the Silverfish lineup (CAT 10/29/14), with Kosann greenlighting the project based on the early success of Big D & Bubba in gaining affiliate traction. “Thanks to that continued success, if we have an idea, we now try it without the fear of failure,” notes Haskins. “There is nothing on the line other than our egos – and our egos are fine with failure, because you have to figure out how to fail in order to succeed.” Seven years in, Lawrence’s show boasts 150 affiliates and has earned CMA and ACM nominations. Carsen Daily: “About a year after we launched Silverfish, [Kosann] came to us with the idea of adding a midday show, but he originally wanted me to host it,” says Thomas. “While I’m on-air with Big D & Bubba and have spent my entire adult life in radio, I knew hosting a solo midday show was not in my wheelhouse. But I did see an opportunity to add another key team member.” Enter Humphreville (CAT 11/10/15), who brought an on-air and programming background to the table. “While I had never worked for an independent syndicator like Silverfish, the faith Patrick had in me made me confident that my skillset would blend perfectly with theirs,” she says. “There wasn’t any apprehension because they had already proven their model. It was easy to picture myself thriving in this environment and adopting their methods as my own.” The division of labor now has Thomas overseeing highlevel business and legal matters while Humphreville focuses on programming and daily execution. “We aren’t a traditional radio station, but if you were to compare our roles, I’d serve more in a GM capacity, and Carsen is definitely the PD and OM,” explains Thomas. “She also handles her show each day and is on as a cohost of Big D & Bubba.” Thomas credits affiliate relations, legal and
Page 10
budgetary responsibilities with consuming his post-show time each day, while Humphreville focuses on music logs, coordinating artist interviews and fielding information requests from labels. “Content creation – our on-air shows – remain both of our first priorities,” says Humphreville. Making The Dream Work: “This isn’t just a great team, it’s a solid business partnership,” explains Powell. “Being a business owner is scary, because you can’t just blame a nameless corporation for any shortcomings, and there’s no parachute. But it also pushes us to be better, because we have to eat. We don’t have a plan B, and our names are on this.” Being a business owner does, however, afford the team creative freedom. “What comes out of the speakers matters most around here,” states Haskins. Adds Thomas, “We trust each other, and we trust those hosting shows under the Silverfish umbrella to create great content that lines up with their own vision.” That creative freedom draws interest from others, with Thomas noting he receives multiple pitches for new shows each month. “I hear a lot of great ideas for syndicated shows, but they don’t all need our business model; some just need distribution, and some need much more than what we can offer,” explains Thomas. It was only recently the team found a new show that fit the model with the addition of Sutton and producer Joyce Rizer for Y’all Access (CAT 2/16). “It was an idea we couldn’t pass up,” explains Thomas. “[Kosann] makes fun of me, because he says no one else starts a radio show from the ground up except us – no affiliates, no flagship – but we do it every time, and so far, we’ve been right.” Last month’s addition of Cumulus WKDF/Nashville to the Big D & Bubba affiliate list (CAT 10/14) is a significant return to the market for the former WSIX/Nashville afternoon show but is not considered a flagship station move. “Our studios are creative central for us – no drama and no craziness – and this is the place

honored and excited to be back on-air in our home market, where we spent so many years on-air previously,” he says. “It’s a highprofile affiliate that everyone we know in our daily lives – friends and family and the entire country music industry – can listen to each day.” Building A History: Noting the company’s organic growth, plans for future expansion will be met with similar openness. “We know we are doing something so many other radio colleagues would love the opportunity to do for themselves,” says Haskins. Powell adds, “It’s a unique business model, but we have faith in the team and an understanding that this works because of [our] trust and [creative] freedom.” Stoking the passion they share remains the focus. “The four of us are fanning the flames and this will keep growing as the fire burns higher,” says Humphreville. Thomas concurs, adding, “To say where we are headed in five or 10 years is not necessarily a linear point-A-to-point-B, and I have no idea what the path will look like along the way, but within the culture and business model we have built, growth is inevitable.” Reach Haskins here, Powell here, Thomas here and Humphreville here. –Monta Vaden CAC
