Artists On Board

Not only have Kix Brooks, Terri Clark, Tracy Lawrence and Chuck Wicks had success on Country radio – they’re making their mark in it. Country Aircheck spoke to them about being on the other side of the mic. Hero Worship: Clark first airchecked as part of Cumulus’ America’s Morning Show team in 2013 (with Wicks, Blair Garner, Lee Ann Womack and Sunny Sweeney) and now hosts Westwood One’s Country Gold. A radio gig was her lifelong dream. “I’ve always been a fan of listening to the radio and gotten Kix Brooks attached to certain personalities and deejays,” she says. “They were the stars. I wanted a shot of being part of that. To me, it’s expanding your brand and thinking outside the box. Reba told me years ago, always try different opportunities when they come along. It keeps you fresh, it keeps you challenged – and she was right.” Lawrence hosts Compass/Silverfish’s Honky Terri Clark Tonkin’ With Tracy Lawrence and cites former WSIX-FM/Nashville afternoon team Carl P. Mayfield and Dean Warfield as inspirations. “When things were rockin’ in the ‘90s, I would call Carl P. every day in the afternoon drive,” he says. “I was on that show a lot.” Lawrence also names WSM-AM’s Bill Cody and Devin O’Day, KNIX/Phoenix’s Tim Hattrick and Willy D Loon, and Spotify’s John Marks as early encouragers. “I was called in many times as a Tracy Lawrence guest deejay before (continued on page 5)

Remembering Mel Tillis

The late Country Music Hall of Famer wasn’t just a songwriter, artist, performer, actor and publisher, he was a student of the business. Mel Tillis is also remembered for helping bring country to a wider audience. singles to radio,” Allen says. “Our first country single ‘Y’all Come Back Saloon’ was coming up the charts and Mel said it was a great choice. ‘You’ll find out your uptempo songs will go up the chart faster,’ he said. ‘For the second single you’ll want to follow up with something similar and uptempo. It won’t sell as much, but it will get the chart action you need to be recognized as quickly as possible. Then, on the third single, release a ballad that women will buy and your sales will take off.’ “Well, our second single was ‘You’re The Duane Allen One’ and when we hit the third with ‘I’ll Be True To You,’ sales went through the roof. That was our first smash No. 1 and it was so true to everything Mel told us. The love song was so successful we put it on our next album, too, as an extra. “Mel was so intelligent but he had common sense, too. And it

goes way beyond just finding a song. He understood the whole process of finding great songs and how to release them to radio.” Fellow Hall member Bobby Bare calls Tillis “the last of my fishing buddies,” a brother and a friend. “He was great to be on a boat with,” he says. “Our first fishing trip in Florida, he fell in. I grabbed him by the leg as he fell over backwards. I pulled him back up and he said, ‘I-I-I always fall in.’ He wasn’t lying. He used to fall in a lot. “He was a real good business man and eventually bought Cedarwood PublishBobby Bare ing. He was the first person I met in Nashville and ‘Detroit City’ [which Tillis wrote] gave me the depth I needed. That was the one thing that really kick-started my career.” Artist manager/agent Jim Halsey represented Tillis from the mid-’70s to the late ‘80s, and also counted him a friend. “Mel was not only talented, writing more than 1,000 songs – more than 300 of which were cut – he was also a good business man,” he says. “A lot of artists just wanted to be told where to go and how much money they’d get. Mel was very interested in how things would project in the long run of his career. “The Halsey Company’s annual ranch parties were famous for having all the top fair, rodeo and TV buyers to our ranch outside Tulsa. We’d put them up for the weekend, have a big pit barbecue and our whole roster would play. Well, in 1974 we see Mel’s bus full of his band coming up the hill to the ranch. We didn’t represent him Jim Halsey at the time, but we’d talked about it. He wanted to perform and I told him it was only for people on our roster. He said he was thinking about joining, but there were certain things he wanted. “He wanted [an improved] itinerary, and our head of fairs pointed out we had the buyers from the 10 biggest fairs. He wanted more money and I told him we could double what he was getting as he was being undersold. ‘The thing I really want is television,’ he said. ‘I want to be on the Tonight Show.’ Well, the producer Freddy de Cordova was there and before we left the meeting he was booked. Mel signed with us, he played the party and he went on to do the Tonight Show so many times. Johnny Carson loved him . “That was his way,” Halsey says. “He studied everything with a serious eye and was one of the guys who helped bring country music into the mainstream.” –Chuck Aly

people were even doing that,” he says. “I was also one of the first artists to guest host Lon Helton’s Country Countdown USA.” For 11 years, Brooks has hosted American Country Countdown, a seat formerly held by his mentor, National Radio Hall of Famer Bob Kingsley. “When ABC called me to do this, my first call was to Bob to get his blessing,” he says. “And I obviously love to hear my self talk,” cracks Brooks, “so it was kind of a fun fit.” Wicks, who now co-hosts Cumulus’ morning show Ty, Kelly & Chuck (with Ty Bentli and Kelly Ford), counts Kingsley, Garner, Brooks and Bentli as mentors. “Blair opened up the doors for me big time in the world of radio. And I really look up to Ty because we’re in the same age bracket, and his dream was to be in radio and have success. I had the dream of singing and being on radio. So now we kind of meet in the middle, and I tell him, ‘If you feel like I could do this or that better, let me know.’” Art Of The Interview: What’s it like to be the one asking the questions? Brooks, a communications major in college, brushed up on his skills when ABC sent him to an interview school on the ESPN campus in Chuck Wicks Connecticut. “I never realized how difficult radio was until I started doing this show,” says Brooks. “I took some voice lessons to learn how to breathe and talk – and obviously I still don’t have a big voice like great announcers do, but I did want to do the best job I could with what I had.

And I learned to listen. Some of the great interviewers of all time have a list of questions to ask, and don’t really pay attention to the answers they’re getting. They just go to the next question.” “The hardest transition as an artist, when you’ve been answering questions about yourself for all these years, is to not make it about yourself,” says Lawrence. “It’s not about you anymore, it’s about the other artist. Learning to identify that is a bit of an adjustment. I still find myself saying, ‘Well I did this ...,’ but I think I’m getting better at it.” “I try to be really engaged in these interviews,” says Clark, “and wear a radio interviewer’s hat too – but not do some of the things people do when they’re interviewing me, like ask, ‘Who are your influences?’ If I’m interviewing Trace Adkins, I should know that already. He’s been out there making music for 20 years. I don’t want to ask questions that people can find [answers to] on Google. I want to ask questions that are fresh and unique.” When interviewing new artists, Wicks says, “I like to find out the cool stuff. Yes, you have a record out and you’re on tour, but tell me something that’s going to make people fall in love with you as a person. Because if a fan does that, they’re going to love your music.” Worlds Collide: Brooks, Clark and Lawrence all record multiple shows in advance and can even tape them on the road via a portable studio, so balancing that with tour dates isn’t really an issue. “The hardest thing for me is there’s so much interesting stuff going on in current news and world affairs that it limits me from being able to talk outside of just the general scope of music,” says Lawrence. “I really wish I had the latitude of being able to talk about things that are actively going on.” Clark has a mobile app to record interviews. “It’s a weekly show, so God forbid, if something major happens, or someone passes away in country music and I’m not in town to tape, I send my producer George [Achaves]

a bit of an obituary or say something pertinent to the moment so we can at least put it in the weekend show.” Wicks is the only artist whose “day gig” is live, Monday through Friday. “I try to just tour on the weekends,” he says, “and in the markets where stations are playing me. If I have a show on a Friday evening. I’ll get up at 4am, get out of the show around 10am, jump on a plane and do the show that night. It makes for a long day, but we just work it out.” “I like the balance a lot,” Wicks adds. “I was a nervous wreck when I was on RCA. Every single that came out, I felt like I was living and dying off that single. Now, I get to go to this awesome morning show Monday through Friday, I still make music, I still release singles and I still tour on the weekends. And I get to talk to country music fans every single morning. There’s only one con for me: there are certain stations that will just not play my record because I’m on a morning show that’s competing against their morning show. I

totally understand the business and how it works and I’m okay with that. I made the decision to do this morning show.” Highlight Reel: There’s no shortage of memorable onair moments. “My second interview was with Reba McEntire,” says Lawrence. “I don’t know why, but I was scared to death. I’ve known her for a long time but I don’t have a personal relationship with her. I wanted to do a great job, be articulate and not ask dumb questions. I stressed over that interview all night. She was great and led me through it like a pro should. Also, to be able to sit and talk to Kenny Rogers, that was an amazing thing. Kenny is a very gracious man.” “I was at the Grand Ole Opry in April and Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry were there,” says Clark. “We just reminisced during the whole interview. There was so much laughter and silliness, and that’s my last memory of being in the same room with Troy – and it’s because of this radio show. I’ll forever be grateful for that.” “Chris Stapleton was talking about his dad,” says Brooks, “and what a fan he was. You just get into that moment where stuff gets real and you both well up with tears. But we’ve had some funny moments, too. Rosanne Cash was talking about the list her father had given her, of the 100 most important songs to him. She has the list, but won’t tell everything that’s on it. She’d just recorded 10 of those songs and was getting emotional, talking about what that meant to her. “I just looked her in the eye and said, ‘Can I have it?’” says Brooks. “She started laughing and said, ‘No, you can’t have it!’ There’s a certain joy in letting somebody realize I know how important it is ... but we’ve got to have a little fun along with it, too.” Trophy Life: All four artists have been ACM and/or CMA-nominated for their radio work. But all agree, the human connection that Country radio provides is their biggest reward. “As a kid, the deejays were my lifeline to Nashville,” says Clark. “So it’s pretty cool for me to maybe be that person some kid living in a tiny little town is listening to every week, and hearing something that might inspire them.” Wicks’ favorite story is exactly about that. He recalls a woman who called the show and said her daughter was being made fun of because of the freckles on her face. Wicks wrote a tune called “The Freckle Song” and sang it on the air the next morning. “They heard it, and it changed this girl’s whole outlook on life. It made her comfortable in her own skin. It made her feel better.
