CMA Awards: Radio Reacts

Last week’s 55th Annual CMA Awards (11/10) returned a full audience of fans and industry to the production, and radio pros in the house and in their houses have thoughts. • iHeartMedia WKKT/Charlotte PD Shelly Easton: “Hands down, Carly Pearce had the best acceptance speech, and I loved how Ashley McBryde reached out a hand to help guide her. Watching the two of them together was genuinely moving. Their performance of ‘Never Wanted To Be That Girl’ captured Shelly Easton the kind of pain that has been the backbone of country music – storytelling that feels like they are not so different from the rest of us. Luke Bryan did a great job as host, and I liked how they used walk-ons and leaned into the fact he was solo this year. The sound was great, and the production had forward-momentum and was fun to watch. Miranda Lambert’s [opening] swagger did Lance Houston not disappoint.” • iHeartMedia WBWL/Boston PD & WUBL/Atlanta afternoon personality Lance Houston: “The opening number by Miranda [Lambert] missed the mark with a bad sound mix, and I thought she should have sung just one song. Walker Hayes should have performed since he had one of the biggest country songs of the year; CMA missed out on a viral moment to Cheyenne Davis connect with young fans. This was one of the best CMA Awards broadcasts of the last few years; although, I must admit some of my favorites from recent years have been complete duds in the TV ratings department, so what do I know?” • Audacy KMLE/Phoenix morning co-host Cheyenne Davis: “Sadly, this year’s broadcast doesn’t even hit top five for me. Robert Deaton On CMAs

Exec. Producer Robert Deaton discusses putting together the 55th CMA Awards. What was the reasoning behind table seating? Keeping everybody as safe as we possibly could. Putting everybody in rows, shoulder to shoulder, didn’t seem to make sense. Also, I Robert Deaton saw a screenshot of an NFL draft that had a thrust down the middle and thought it would be cool to extend our set design into the audience. That made the tables part of the design and meant winners had a much shorter distance to walk. Miranda opened with a hits medley, setting a trend with a show that seemed to mix in quite a few proven crowd-pleasers.

We try – unless [a new song] is just too good. With Miranda, it was her year. She’d never opened the show before. She and I talked about doing the medley and thought it would be great. Where you get away from hits is Miranda Lambert for a song like “Cold,” which is obviously familiar to people who’ve heard Chris Stapleton’s album ... and it’s so over-the-top great. Luke Bryan had several segments where he was joined by former hosts and others. How were those conceptualized? That kind of came organically. We found out that Katy Perry and Lionel Richie were already going to be in town for American Idol. We thought about putting them in the opening monologue like we did with the Hank Williams, Jr. walk-out a few years ago. Once we got that down, I asked Luke about playing that gag all night. He loved it and the artist community loves him, so everybody I asked wanted to be a part of it. I wish we could have done more. You defied a bit of awards show convention in having a big gap between performances up front. Did you view the cameos as hits in a similar way, or even think about it like that? I didn’t. I just thought it was a good through-line and also made things sort of looser. Instead of, “Well, up next is ...” it gave it some character. Also, the opening monologue was four minutes, and in the past we’ve done seven, eight, nine minute monologues. Since we cut that time down, we could keep it going. The yearbook photos during “Famous Friends” went over well. Did you have to ask permission to make fun of people? We did have to get Kane Brown and Chris Young permission to use the photos, but we didn’t necessarily tell them what we were going to put on the screen. But we knew if we were being consistently silly, they’d take it for what it was. What other performances have some backstory? I thought if I was going to make an offer to Mickey Guyton it would be for “All Americans,” but I heard “Love My Hair” and was floored. She loved the idea of having guests and asked who I thought, but I’m like, “Whoever you want.” She chose Madeline Edwards and Brittney Spencer [then] had the idea of using a video clip of Faith, who inspired the song, as the intro. I watched it and

called Mickey back to suggest we bring Faith on the show. And it was a call I had with Faith’s mom – how a terrible moment at the time turned into something great in the song – that provided the idea of what Faith would say. Faith Fennidy, Madeline The other pitch was to Carly Edwards, Mickey Guyton and Pearce for something modern Brittney Spencer for her and Ashley McBryde. Nothing to distract. A story just between the two of them – spaced and moving together as they tell their two sides. None of that could have been done with a band onstage. Not only did it have drama, but it was a throwback to great performances like Reba McEntire and Linda Davis. How did the Jennifer Hudson performance happen? I am the hugest fan and, after a screening of Respect, told her I’d been trying to book her forever. She was like, “Well then I don’t know why we’re not doing something!” Later I heard “Night Life,” contacted Jennifer’s manager and we booked it. Then I had “You Are My Sunshine” come up on YouTube and thought of doing the misdirect at the end of “Night Life.” I pitched Chris Stapleton’s management, and he agreed. When we did it in rehearsals, I knew it was going to absolutely crush. Best I could tell, the show didn’t carry big performances over the tops of the hours this time. Was that intentional? No, that was just us running long. The artists were genuinely excited to be back in a normal environment, having a good time and everything was spreading. If Carly goes down to her knees crying, you think I’m going to cut that off? If Jimmie Allen is having his moment, you have to let it go. Why didn’t Brad Paisley perform the song with Jimmie? I don’t know the answer to that. He was welcome to join, and I made an offer, but I think they said he had a previous commitment. From the mailbag, people still ask why there’s no time to mention radio winners. That’s a CMA question. It’s kind of the same question as when they took the Musical Event presentation off the air. That’s not my decision. If they want me to do it, I’ll do it. Final thoughts? This show is supposed to be representative of what happened in the previous year in country music, and the negative headline might get the click. But I hope within and outside the genre, the view of who we are is different even from what it was a few years ago. T.J. Osborne was brave several months ago and brave with

OFF THE RECORD Country Aircheck goes Off The Record with High Valley’s Brad Rempel: My wife and I got borderline addicted to building during the pandemic — designing and flipping houses while we were killing time. Probably won’t be able to quit. I’ve recently decided to be less “precious” with my demos and have started sharing a lot of my new songs and song ideas with the fans online. We didn’t have radio growing up, BRAD REMPEL but in the year 2000 we got KIX 106 [Top 40 CKKX/Alberta]. Smash Mouth’s “All Star” is the first song I remember hearing on the radio in our town. The first time I heard myself on the radio, I was sitting at home with my mom and dad waiting for the school bus to pick me up, and the morning show on our local station debuted “Someday.” I was in 10th grade. “Whatever it Takes” is a great representation of High Valley at its best. It shows we’re evolving and growing but also that we still can’t get enough of a good bluegrass foot stomper/soccer stadium chant combo! The most redneck thing I’ve done lately is hauling a dirt bike and bathtub in the back of my wife’s SUV with the back hatch open. I wish I’d written Miranda Lambert’s “House That Built Me.” I’m a sucker for nostalgia, and the lyrics in this song hit way too close to home. My dad just sold off the last of the family farm, and I’m sure someday I’ll surprise somebody and pull up the drive of my old stomping grounds. I wouldn’t repeat the video where she shows up in a tour bus, though. Way too many gravel miles for a bus to get to the farm! My favorite song on the radio – any format – right now is “’Til You Can’t” by Cody Johnson. I love the message … the simplicity and importance of this song, especially this year. I also think it’ll win a ton of awards and be on the radio forever. I love Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Big Sky and of course Yellowstone.

Congratulations to Ryan Hurd, Maren Morris, Steve Hodges, Josh Easler, Lauren Thomas and the Arista promotion team on taking “Chasing After You” to No. 1 and notching Hurd’s very first chart-topper. Songwriters are Brinley Maren Morris Addington and Jerry Flowers. The last time and Ryan Hurd a married couple occupied the top of the chart was April 29, 2013, when Thompson Square (Keifer and Shawna Thompson) hit No. 1 with “If I Didn’t Have You” (CAW 4/29/13). And kudos to Katie Dean and the MCA team for scoring 70 adds and landing “I Bet You Think About Me” by Taylor Swift f/Chris Stapleton atop this week’s Add Board. The track debuts at No. 35 with just three days of airplay and becomes Swift’s highest debut on the chart since Aug. 2012, when “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” from the original Red album, debuted at No. 19.

Christmas Music Spins By Day

Country Aircheck analyzed last year’s Christmas music airplay on Mediabase to see which stations played how much, and when. As expected, Christmas music started to truly take hold the day after Thanksgiving, reaching nearly 3,000 spins on Black Friday, then leveled off until hitting the 3,000 spin level on Dec. 17. From that point, spins nudged upward every day until Christmas Eve and Christmas, the latter peaking at more than 30,000 spins. The two stations with the most Christmas spins last year are both locally owned (see graph page 12). As the only station on the panel to go all-Christmas (Nov. 30, 2020 flip), KKGO/Los Angeles naturally led with more than 8,000 spins. KSOP/Salt Lake City placed second with more than 3,000 as it featured all-Christmas weekends leading up to the big day. –Chris Huff
