Underwood, Paisley Preview Awards

“One of the best moments in country music history will happen on Wednesday,” Carrie Underwood said during the radio remotes opening press conference Sunday night (10/30). Wednesday, of course, is the 50th Annual CMA Awards live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on ABC-TV. “There’s some cool stuff happening that will be remembered,” she added. Admittedly secretive, she and others did let a few tidbits slip, however. More on that later. As CMA SVP/Marketing & Partnerships Damon Whiteside noted during the orientation portion of the program, the remotes are in their third year of being open to all radio groups. “We are really excited to welcome [KKGO/Los Angeles and WKLB/Boston],” he said of two new additions this year. Still not represented: CBS Radio. Programmers and personalities gathered at highboy tables awaiting awards hosts Brad Paisley and Underwood, who were preceded by Country Aircheck’s Lon Helton. Wearing a Cubs shirt under his blazer, Helton hinted Brad Paisley at a dilemma that is likely confounding ABC execs as well. If the World Series goes to a seventh game, it will be Wednesday night, competing head-to-head with the CMAs for viewers ... and Helton. “I’ve been to 36 CMA Awards shows and zero Cubs World Series wins,” he said. “Might be a tough choice.” The crowd laughed, Paisley not so much. “I’m actually Carrie neutral,” he said regarding which team he’s Underwood supporting. “I just don’t want it to go seven games.” Underwood admitted she didn’t know anything about the series. Should it extend to seven games, Paisley said, “You can look forward to 1 million viewers.” Turning to the task at hand, Underwood said, “Normally we have the task of celebrating a year in country music,” she said. “This year we’re celebrating 50.” “You think back to the incredible performances over the years and we have to revisit some of those and include all of the legends we can,” Paisley added. “It’s a balancing act. However it ends up coming off, Carrie, myself and [Exec. Producer] Robert Deaton have had discussions [about] being so totally respectful.” Paisley tapped a childhood memory of watching the show. “I remember Ricky Skaggs accepting (continued on page 9)

The Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum slogan is “Come see what you’ve heard” – and during Wednesday’s (10/26) Class of 2016 induction at Nashville’s Municipal Auditorium artists, industry execs and fans did just that. This year’s country class members are: Garth Brooks and the G-Men (Bruce Bouton, Mark Casstevens, the late Mike Chapman, Rob Hajacos, Chris Leuzinger, Milton Sledge and Bobby Wood), the late Jerry Reed, Ricky Skaggs, engineers Lou Bradley, Mark Miller and Ron “Snake” Reynolds, and producer Allen Reynolds. The opening number “TSOP” (a nod to inductees the Sigma Sound Studio Rhythm Section) was followed by “Seven Bridges Road,” sung by former Eagles member Don Felder (there to accept the Iconic Riff Award for “Hotel California”), Skaggs, Steve Wariner and Gordon Kennedy. Felder then played the Eagles’ “Victim Of Love.” Host Kenny G emerged from the crowd on his soprano saxophone playing his 1988 song “Silhouette.” “Michael Bolton was busy,” he quipped, “so here I am.” Skaggs performed “Heartbroke,” “Somebody’s Prayin’” and a bluegrass version of Bruce Hornsby’s “The Way It Is” with Hornsby himself on piano. “It’s very humbling to be here in this

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE Reviver's Michael Tyler discusses his most influential music: 1. Jason Aldean: He played a show close to my hometown in Missouri. Ever since then, I've always watched how he performs and portrays himself. 2. Cinderella & Poison: That was one of my first concerts. It was a lot to take in! The Michael Tyler energy of the show and how they got the crowd pumped up really influenced me. 3. Kid Rock: I've always liked him. I went to one of his shows at Mud Island in Memphis. There was a part in the show where he played every instrument and showed off how talented he actually is. There were a lot of things he said in between songs that I'm thinking about stealing. 4. The Script: I used to listen to them a lot. A lot of melodies and the structure of their songs and guitar licks have seeped into my writing. 5. Justin Bieber: I'm probably going to get made fun of for this, but that dude has got some seriously hook songs. I'm sure he's influencing everybody right now. I want to write a song like that. • Highly regarded music you've actually never heard: Kanye West. He's sold millions of records and he's a huge star, but I've never heard one song. • "Important" music you just don't get: Jazz. • An album you listened to incessantly: Jason Aldean's My Kinda Party. Every song on that record is great. There are a lot of similarities in the songs and where I grew up. "Church Pew Or Bar Stool" is totally my hometown. • An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: I have this weird thing with '50s Doowop. There's a song I have as my alarm every morning by The Capris called "There's A Moon Out Tonight." If you're into that, listen to the song! • Music you'd rather not admit to enjoying: I love almost every One Direction song there is. Growing up, my brother and I loved '80s hair metal and classic rock. If you listen to One Direction songs, you can definitely tell whoever wrote them loved metal and classic rock, too.

wonderful, hallowed hall,” said Skaggs, who thanked his parents “for a Christian home filled with love, joy and lots of music.” The former sideman for Ralph Stanley and Emmylou Harris also thanked his attorney, accountant, former record label head Rick Blackburn and his family, including wife and fellow Grand Ole Opry member Sharon White. “But most of all, I want to thank the Lord Jesus,” he said. “God never called me to be famous. He called me to be faithful. And that’s what I want to do.” Wariner inducted his friend Reed with true-to-the-original versions of his “Amos Moses” and “East Bound And Down.” He and Reed’s daughters spoke of Reed’s hard-scrabble childhood, ever-present sense of humor and his humility as a musician. Reed’s session work can be heard on albums by artists including Chet Atkins, Waylon Jennings and Dolly Parton. Producer Reynolds, engineer Miller and the G-Men created a signature sound for an unknown artist from Oklahoma, and it’s hard to imagine “The Dance” without Wood’s piano intro, or “Friends In Low Places” without Hajacos’ fiddle licks. “From the very beginning,” said Reynolds, “this band worked so well together and with Garth. And their playing and arrangement ideas were inspiring. They never let us down once. ... I so respect their talent and their sweet musical souls and I will always cherish the memories of making music together.” Brooks and the G-Men stood onstage expressing gratitude and

OFF THE RECORD: Steve Wariner SelecTone’s Steve Wariner puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to WIRE-AM/ Indianapolis with Lee Shannon, Ken Speck, Bill Robinson. That station really set the bar for me. Later, as I started having hits, I got to play some of their outdoor festivals. The first time I heard myself on the Steve Wariner radio, I pulled into the parking lot of a music store and there was a girl parked beside me listening to Country radio – and my song was playing. She was cute and I wanted to go, “Hey, that’s me!” But I had restraint. When I was starting out on RCA, Sylvia and I were on a radio tour together with our southeast regional, Gaylon Adams. We were on the interstate outside Greenville, SC, on our way to a station. It started raining and we did about five spins and ran into a ditch. Luckily no one was hurt. Fast forward 15 minutes later, I’m on the air saying, “Yeah, my new record’s coming out ...” and still shaking, because 15 minutes ago I thought we were going to be killed. In the early days, my favorite person to travel with was Dean Dillon, who was also on RCA at the time. Dean was ornery and hilarious. He always had me in trouble! Back in the “Urban Cowboy” days, they asked us to be judges in a dance contest. We both said, “Sure, anything to get our records played.” We were supposed to put numbers on the backs of the best dancers. Well Dean said, “Let’s tag the worst dancers we can find.” We exited the club soon after that because people were booing and yelling at us. I’ve never lost so much sleep in my life, but it was so fun traveling with Dean. He was crazy – and still is. My new record is called All Over The Map because it’s every style you can imagine. It goes from a song I co-wrote with Merle Haggard that no one’s ever heard to a twangy song with Duane Eddy to a song I did with my son, Ryan. And I did all the artwork for it. My last impulse buy was a 1935 Gibson L-50 archtop guitar. I need to stay away from those guitar shows. My least favorite interview question was 15 years ago. I don’t blame the interviewer because they were just starting out. But it irritated me when the first question was, “Do you play guitar?” I said, “Yes. Yes I do.”

I am so proud to say, you are staring at the weakest link in this group. “The word I keep hearing up here is ‘family,’” Brooks added. “We worked together, lived together, stunk together. SESAC Awards Recap

Sunday night’s (10/30) SESAC Nashville Music Awards honored some of the organization’s most successful songwriters. Josh Hoge, who wrote Chris Young’s “I’m Comin’ Over” and Young and Cassadee Pope’s “Think Of You,” took home the honor for Country Songwriter of the Year. “We’re in a hope business,” Hoge said. “As a songwriter, you hope. You go in and try to write the best songs you can and you hope somebody likes it.” Dierks Bentley presented the award for Song of the Year to writers Jaron Boyer and Michael Tyler for “Somewhere On A Beach,” the fastest rising single of Bentley’s career. The 2016 Publisher of the Year Award went to Sony ATV/EMI Foray Publishing and Write 2 Be Free Music. SESAC’s Shannon Hatch also took a moment to recognize late Nashville Songwriter’s Hall Of Fame member Kim Williams. Performances included Chris Young with “I’m Comin’ Over,” Runaway June with “Lipstick,” Michael Tyler’s “They Don’t See” and Margo Price’s “Desperate And Depressed.” Dustin Lynch, Billy Currington, Kelsea Ballerini, Cassadee Pope and Michael Ray served as presenters. –Grace Lenehan

Skaggs received the Founders Award, Chris Stapleton was honored with the Vanguard Award and Brothers Osborne’s “Stay A Little Longer” was named Song of the Year at the 54th Annual ASCAP Country Music Awards Monday evening Brothers Osborne (10/31) in Nashville. Additionally, Premiere’s Bobby Bones received the Partners in Music Award and Warner/Chappell took the Publisher of the Year Award. (continued from page 1) Entertainer of the Year and saying to any young musicians, ‘You can do this.’ I was a little kid in cowboy getup watching the show going, ‘Okay, Ricky!’” Later he added, “Be careful what you say in your acceptance speeches.” With a national election looming, topical humor is certainly in play. “We won’t take a side in this,” Paisley said. Underwood added, “I think we do a really good job of keeping things equal.” “It’s scary times if you look at it from a certain point of view, but if you’re trying to be comedic it’s awesome,” Paisley said. “There’s a way to do it. That’s why we take so long to get it right. You can take what’s happening on our news stations right now and work that into how you talk about the nominees. You can write a parody of an old country classic about what’s going on right now. That’s what we’ve always tried to do.” Responding to a wardrobe question submitted by WLHK/ Indianapolis’ Dave O’Brien, Underwood said, “I had this idea months ago about doing decade-inspired wardrobe looks. I will start and end the night as me, but throughout the evenings it will be ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s and early 2000s.” Helton asked if the hairstyles would match the outfit. “I’m not going to dump a bottle of White Rain on my hair and tease it up,” Underwood joked. “The hair and the makeup will fit. It will look good.” Paisley said, “I may be going through the decades too. She could show the best of the decade and I’ll show the low point.” The hosts offered each other props, as well. “I’m very, very proud to do this with her,” Paisley said. “She works so hard on the writing of this; there’s nothing she lets slide. She’s very picky about [keeping it classy], which is good. I’m very proud of what we’ve done as two people who aren’t comedians [yet are able to] pull this off.” “I can’t let him say that without telling you guys he’s incredibly invested and amazing,” Underwood said. “So supportive and just the best brother I never had.” And while neither wanted to reveal too much about the show, Paisley and Underwood were late to the press conference because they were working on the open. “Without giving away our secrets, it was a really magical day when you get a lot of people onstage all at once,” Underwood noted of their delay. Earlier, Helton – a board member – urged anyone in the room with tickets to “absolutely be in your seats before the show starts. You do not want to miss this open.” So.
