Recap: Country Radio Hall Inductions

“Radio is the house that built me,” said RJ Curtis during last week’s (10/13) Country Radio Hall of Fame Induction Dinner And Awards ceremony. “Everything I need to know, I learned working in a radio station with radio professionals.” The careers and contributions of the Class of 2021 were celebrated in a night as much about those who impacted the honorees — many of whom were in attendance — as the impact of the honorees themselves. The evening began with the “inevitable,” to quote CRB/ CRS Board Pres. Kurt Johnson, President’s Award recipient Beverlee Brannigan, whose speech progressed into a love letter to CRS, saying in part, “There is no other genre or format that has the kind of support system that CRS has grown into.” The biggest surprise of the night arrived early … steak! Instead of chicken! Also, Garth Brooks. The latter, suffering from a cold and doing his best Carole Baskin, made an argument for “cool cat” and CRB Artist Career Achievement Award winner Keith Urban. “Everyone that comes before you is a god, and everyone that comes after is a punk,” laughed Brooks, who would later join Urban and Trisha Yearwood for a performance of “Fishin’ In The Keith Urban, Trisha Yearwood Dark.” “But Keith is and Garth Brooks old school.” After recalling his shortlived radio career — more on that in the Country Aircheck October print issue here — and “conference room auditions of despair,” Urban concluded, “I want to thank every one of you for believing in what I do and playing my music.” KIIM/Tucson PD Buzz Jackson emphasized the importance of radio’s “friendly voice,” especially in (continued on page 11)

solo-writing what many regard as his one of his best compositions, “Don’t Let The Old Man In.” I don’t think I ever knew the difference between singing and writing. There’s an old picture I found with some cassette tapes in the background – probably 50 in a rack – and the names were Bob Seger, Merle, Willie, Charlie Daniels, Dolly Parton, the Eagles. There was a Ronnie Milsap and a Conway, but the majority wrote their own stuff. For some reason, I’ve always gravitated to that, even though there are stylists who don’t write that I really enjoy. In my heart, I wanted to hear people who sang their own stuff, and that’s what I tried to do. Not living around Nashville or a big music area, there weren’t good people around to learn from, so learning to write was hard. The hardest part was starting at letter “A.” There’s nothing Pillow Talkin: Keith with Stephen Colbert at his 2015 Songwriters great waiting for you; Hall of Fame induction. you have to create it. My deal was to write all the time. I wrote 100 that weren’t worth a damn, then finally wrote a decent one. Next time around, it was 90 before I got a good one. I just kept shortening that gap. Now that I know what I’m doing, it’s all a search for great ideas. When Clint Eastwood said, “I just don’t let the old man in,” I thought it was one of the greatest ideas I’d ever heard. It takes years and thousands of songs written to get to something like that. Your job as a pro is to go nail it.

The first good one I wrote, “Tossing And Turning,” was never recorded, but the second my band heard it, they wanted to learn it. The melody was modern at the time – late ‘80s – kind of an Earl Thomas Conley or Eddy Raven thing. I actually wrote “Does That Blue Moon Ever Shine On You” before I got signed to Mercury, but nobody liked it. After having a few hits, I was opening for Reba, and her crowd likes ballads, but I didn’t have any. So, we did a piano-vocal version in the show, and it brought the house down. Everybody said, “What’s this song?” We cut it, it went to No. 1, and we named my third album after it. I’d bring Scotty Emerick or Bobby Pinson on the road, and we’d pound out four or five songs in a weekend. Do those eight or nine times a year, and you’ve got a pretty good pile by the time you get to record. And I might write five or six by myself. We were putting out four or five singles and an album every year. Now it takes 40-50 weeks to have a No. 1, which means in a 20-year career you might have 20 hits. I had 20 hits in six years. I was on five different labels for my first four albums and never had continuity that led to awards shows. No matter how big a year I had or how big my song was, the politics weren’t on my side to be that guy. Around ‘05, I realized I’d been nominated 27 times and only got one, so I said I’m not going to play that game anymore. I was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2015, and people asked how I could be in the one in New York, but not the one in Nashville. It’s not up to me and can’t be my decision. I wondered if it might be the same deal as the awards shows. The songwriter halls are the ones – honest to God – that mean everything to me. It’s a true honor. I’m excited for everybody who’s been involved with my career. –Chuck Aly

OFF THE RECORD An Off The Record conversation with Warner/WAR’s Troy Cartwright: The pandemic forced me to slow down and get my priorities in order. When you’re on the road every weekend, it’s easy to let your friends and family relationships slip away, and I was able to make those a priority again. I hope I never lose that. My social media strategy has been less curation and more “throw stuff TROY CARTWRIGHT at the wall and see what sticks.” I’m just having fun with it. I grew up listening to 99.5 The Wolf in DFW [KPLX/Dallas]. The first time I heard myself on the radio I was pulling into my driveway in East Nashville and “Hung Up On You” came on 103.3 [WKDF]. It was so surreal! It’s something I’ve always dreamed about. I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention my hometown Texas Country station 95.9 The Ranch [KFWR/ Fort Worth], which has supported me for many years. Every time I get played on the radio, it doesn’t feel real. I never take it for granted. Halfway To Houston is my most cohesive EP yet. I tried to bring a piece of myself to every song, and I’m so proud of it. From getting to tell my story with “Shine On Me” and “God is Good” to driving songs like “Halfway To Houston,” pumping myself up with “Hammer” and feel a little heartache with “Breaking Every Heart In Texas.” I got into this whole thing because I love songs, and I’m so excited for everyone to hear it. If I could’ve written one song it would probably be “Lynyrd Skynyrd Jones,” recorded by Eric Church and written by the legend Casey Beathard. My favorite song on the radio – any format – right now is Lee Brice’s “Memory I Don’t Mess With.” Lee’s voice, the lyrics, the pain that comes through … it’s beautiful. We’ve been lucky to be back on the road, so as far as bingeing, it’s been a lot of West Wing reruns on the HBO app and Dallas Cowboys football for me.

Congratulations to Elvie Shane, Carson James, birthday boy Ken Tucker, Renee Leymon, Jennifer Shaffer and the Wheelhouse promotion team on taking Shane’s debut single “My Boy” to the top of the chart. Shane becomes the first Kentucky native to take an introductory release to No. 1 since Carly Pearce with “Every Little Thing” Elvie Shane in 2017, and the first male artist from the state to do so since Billy Ray Cyrus with “Achy Breaky Heart” in 1992. Songwriters are Lee Starr, Nick Columbia, Russell Sutton and Shane. Kudos to Dennis Reese and the RCA team on scoring 102 adds on Miranda Lambert’s “If I Was A Cowboy.” This is Lambert’s second largest Most Added total ever, behind only the 108 adds of 2019’s “It All Comes Out In The Wash.” “Cowboy” is also the sole new entry on this week’s chart; at No. 32 it becomes the third highest debut in Lambert’s career, behind “Vice” (No. 28 debut in 2016) and “Wash” (No. 30).

WUBL/Atlanta APD/midday personality Angie Ward acknowledged her many radio families, including the KVET/Austin table, and dedicated her induction to the late “Big Paul” Franklin. She also thanked the broadcast companies championing women and acknowledged the challenges women face in the industry. “I’ve had people tell me that middays weren’t as important, women can’t host a show by themselves and women ‘just aren’t as good at doing endorsements,’” Ward lamented. “But tonight, Heather [Froglear] and Angie are going into the Hall of Fame!” Watch her speech here. Speaking of KVET, afternoon host Bob Pickett continued the night’s theme of recognizing mentors, literally, by inviting the man who hired him for his first radio gig at KXOX/Sweetwater, TX in 1977, Johnny Moore, to help unveil his plaque. Bob,” she replied. “You’re not in any of my wildest dreams.” This year marked the first time inductees were able to thank people via scrolling names on video screens and choose their walk-on music — just in time for the induction of retired Bristol WXBQ/Johnson City, TN PD Bill Hagy, who had “five full decades” of people to thank and the perfect track in mind, Alan Jackson’s “Here in the Real World.” Former Arista head Tim DuBois shared the story of the programmer refusing to play the song from “the new face of country for the ’90s” before Hagy took the stage to refute the claims. “We did play it … as an oldie.” Unfortunately, due to a non-emergency health issue, Bonneville KYGO/Denver VP/MM Bob Call was unable to attend and will be honored at next year’s event. Curtis shared his 360-degree journey through the many facets of the country music industry. “What’s especially meaningful to me is that this adventure started with radio,” he noted. That early obsession with radio led to his first gig, quitting college and a promise to his parents that “if the radio thing didn’t work out, it was back to school.” “Tonight, I’m happy to report, 43 years later, so far, I haven’t seen the inside of a classroom since that handshake,” he claimed, adding later he’s decided to “skip another semester.” The late Norm Schrutt’s route from radio to agent was detailed in a video package by former client Mojo from Mojo in the Morning before daughter Susan Goldberg accepted on his behalf and shared an anecdote illustrating just how dedicated her father was to getting people to the number he wanted … even in funeral arrangements. “I know he would be thrilled,” she closed. “It’s so much more than music, my endless babbling on the radio,” shared Audacy KFRG/Riverside APD/MD & West Coast regional afternoon host Heather Froglear. “It’s communication. It’s being authentic. It’s being real. It’s sharing the good, the bad, the ugly.” Froglear talked about the realization of “how incredibly powerful radio is and the immense responsibility we have when we turn on the mic every day,” noting the support of listeners following the adoption of her daughter, the deaths of her brother and father and work with Loma Linda Children’s Research Hospital. Addressing her niece in the audience — just five years into her own radio career — Froglear shared the advice, “Be good to others, smile every time you open the mic, feel the music … even if it makes you cry, cry. Go above and beyond, not because you have to, but because you freaking love radio. Sept. PPM Top 10 SHARE

September 2021 PPM Scoreboard Country shares in the September 2021 PPM Book (8/19-9/15) were off slighty (-0.8%) from August, and off 3.2% from last September. Format cume saw a fourth consecutive month of decline, down 5.1% from last month to 24,570,200. That is a 6.2% decrease from last September. The two stations with the largest shares in July and August tied for the format lead in September as both WCOL/Columbus and WWYZ/Hartford scored a 7.9. Though its 7.1 share placed it in sixth place overall in the
