Political Content: Off Limits?
“People who want to share their religious or political views with you almost never want you to share yours with them.” So says writer and humorist Dave Barry, your Facebook feed and many a radio program director. Is avoiding political talk still a smart onair approach in the midst of the most-talked-about presidential election in modern history? Country Aircheck tapped a leading radio talent coach, a Texas Radio Hall Of Famer and a veteran programmer to find out. Polarization Express: Air talent on music-based radio stations are generally directed to avoid political content completely, to do it a way that’s fluffy or funny, or to be an open book and engage at a level that’s Steve Reynolds comfortable and authentic. Talent coach Steve Reynolds says the best approach is the one that fits the talent’s connection with the audience. “It’s a lot like real life,” he argues. “If we have a deep relationship with someone, we can share political perspectives. But if we don’t, we shouldn’t as it’s too polarizing.” And polarizing Country Aircheck polled the industry’s ticket content is a surefire way preference last week. These are the results. to shrink an audience. Consider Facebook. A Donald Trump & Mike Pence 46% Pew study conducted Hillary Clinton & Tim Kaine 41% during the 2012 election Gary Johnson & Bill Weld 13% cycle found that 18% of social media users had blocked or hidden someone for political reasons. On The Write Track
In Nashville, it all begins with a song. And more and more, that song begins with a beat or a loop instead of a lyric. A mainstay of pop and R&B for decades, track-based writing is becoming the norm in country. Country Aircheck spoke to three of Music City’s Jimmy chart-topping “track guys” about why it’s Robbins increasingly the preferred method. Traccidental: Round Hill Music writer/ producer Jimmy Robbins moved to town five years ago and became a track guy out of necessity. “I wanted to make a record, but couldn’t afford a producer,” he says. “But I could afford the starter kit for Pro Tools. So I bought Pro Tools, taught myself and made a record. That was what I used to get a publishing deal.

OFF THE RECORD: Aubrie Sellers Atlantic/WEA's Aubrie Sellers puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to WSM-AM/ Nashville because the Opry was on there. My dad [songwriter Jason Sellers] played with Ricky Skaggs when I was little, so we listened to that station a lot. The first time I heard myself was on Aubrie Sellers SiriusXM's The Highway. I was driving down the road and it was really exciting. I screamed. I was at airport security when I realized I'd left my computer in the rental car we'd just returned. Poor Stephanie [Holzer], my label rep, she sprinted all the way back and got it. Thank God it was still there and we made our flight! When my mom [Lee Ann Womack] went on her radio tour, I was seven. Before she left we went to Walmart and got a mama bear stuffed animal with a baby bear in its arms. I took the mama bear and she took the baby bear so I'd have something to remind me of her while she was gone. I kept it all these years. Now that I'm on my radio tour, I have mama bear with me again and she has the baby bear. I always get barbecue-flavored sunflower seeds at truck stops. Once I start eating them, I can't stop. I call my music garage country. I have a very country voice and I write country songs – but there's no acoustic guitar on my record. There's electric guitar and loud trashy drums, and cool sounds that come from rock records I love – and then there's steel guitar and all the sounds from country records I love. I wish I had written The Beach Boys' "In My Room." I recorded it as a bonus track on my album. I'm very introverted, so it feels like such a personal song to me. I have to have something to read and something to write in on the road. I forgot my journal on one of my radio tour trips recently and I felt like my arm was missing. A lot of people ask me about my mom and the "I Hope You Dance" video. I get it, and this is the first time anyone's seen me since then ... but I'm thinking, 'Wanna talk about my new record?' (laughs) People have been asking me about that video since I was eight years old!

From then on, [publishers] used that as a selling point. They’d say, ‘He does tracks.’ And I’d say, ‘Well I don’t really, but I’ll try!’” Robbins tried and succeeded. Some of his cuts include Blake Shelton’s “Sure Be Cool If You Did,” Thomas Rhett’s “It Goes Like This” and the Keith Urban/Miranda Lambert Duet “We Were Us.” “It’s become one of the go-to asks for every writing session,” says Robbins. “When they’re setting up a session, they always try to put one trackminded person in there. Financially, for a publisher, you could save $30,000 a year on demos just by having your writers write with track people. But more than that, it’s turnaround. Rather than writing for two weeks and then booking a demo session and then picking your five favorites, you’re getting a pitchable song demo every day.” Quick Hits: L.A.-based DJ/producer and BMG/Chrysalis writer Alexander Palmer has worked with Iggy Azalea, Jason Derulo and Chris Brown, among others. Dierks Bentley’s “Somewhere On A Beach” was his first country hit. Palmer says the song started with a two-bar guitar loop guitarist/co-writer Dave Kuncio wrote. “I took that loop and built the rest of the track,” he says. “The original track could have been a hip hop or R&B record. I was thinking, ‘This could work for a Ty Dolla $ign or a Jeremih.’ But I was also going to play it for (co-writers) Jaron [Boyer] and Michael Tyler when I went Alexander to Nashville, hoping they would like it. We Palmer added some acoustics, wrote a bridge and structured it the way a country song would be arranged. I had a session that day with Jaron and Josh Mirenda, who’s an amazing lyricist. Jaron, Josh and Michael already had the concept of ‘Somewhere On A Beach.’ After that, it was done in 30 or 40 minutes.” Loop Dreams: “I don’t think I’ve written with someone else just strictly on a guitar in years,” says Big Loud Shirt’s Matt Dragstrem, who counts among his cuts Florida Georgia Line’s “Sippin’ On Fire,” Chris Lane’s “For Her” and Justin Moore’s recent No. 1 “You Look Like I Need A Drink.” Dragstrem feels a track can Matt lead he and his co-writers down new creative Dragstrem paths. “Sometimes people will get more open,” he says. “They’ll throw out ideas they wouldn’t normally throw out if they were just jamming on guitar. A lot of times I’ll play the loop and we’ll keep singing over it, trying to find the best idea, phrasing and melody.” Dragstrem wrote Moore’s hit with Natalie Hemby and Rodney Clawson. “I love the way [Moore] cut it, but mine was

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE Row Entertainment's Mark Chesnutt discusses his most influential music: 1. George Jones: I love George's phrasing. Nobody phrased like him or had that type of voice. 2. Merle Haggard: I love Merle's tone of voice. He and George were my biggest influences. And I actually got to Mark Chesnutt hang out with them, get to know them and be friends with them. 3. Willie Nelson: I love Willie's style of singing. It's really beautiful. 4. Johnny Cash: He was different than anybody else. 5. Jerry Lee Lewis: He had so much soul. I think the country records he made in the '60s and '70s had more soul than his rock and roll records in the '50s. • Highly regarded music you've actually never heard: I've never heard Adele's music. I probably should, because I've heard she's great. • "Important" music you just don't get: I try to understand all music, because it's all an art form. A lot of people talk highly of these hip hop stars. They influence so many people – even in country music now. I've never understood that at all. The closest I got to understanding it was when I just happened to hear an Eminem song. I liked what he sounded like and the way he phrased his lyrics. • An album you listened to incessantly: Right now it happens to be my new record. I know that sounds like I'm pushing it, but I'm so proud of it. • An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Well he's not obscure, but I think everybody should listen to Michael Bublé's "I Just Haven't Met You Yet." That song gets me in a good mood every time I hear it. • Music you'd rather not admit to enjoying: I'm a huge Kiss fan. I've always loved them. I've probably been to 30 Kiss concerts. I love the makeup and the costumes. It's the most entertaining stuff I've ever seen. I still go see them when I get a chance. Twenty years ago when I first started out, my label didn't even want me to admit that. It used to be a guilty pleasure, but now I'm proud of it.

probably 20 beats per minute slower, with an Eagles kind of country vibe to it,” he says. “We changed the key and I did a guy and girl version, just in case. But that song was from a track idea.” With so many blurred musical lines, what makes a track country? All three writers agree it’s the lyric. “In country, we’re still a lot more focused on writing a story-based song – even if the story is something as light as flirting with a girl in a bar,” explains Robbins. “And we’re much more strict lyrically about keeping the story linear and paying attention to tenses. In a pop song, you could be talking to a ‘her’ in the verse and then a ‘you’ in the chorus. In a country song that’s not going to happen unless you say, ‘And then he said to her ... ‘ The craft of the song is still there.” New Tricks: Robbins recalls introducing veteran hitmakers Rhett Akins and Ben Hayslip to the track method. “I remember when we wrote “It Goes Like This,” Rhett and Ben had never really worked with a dude who does the demo right then and there and you build it as you go,” he says. “And Craig Wiseman was really quick to see something different happening and jump in. These guys who are so successful, yet still humble enough to say, ‘Hey you’re doing something different – let’s try that’ – those are the guys who are still kicking doors down.” Palmer, Dragstrem and Robbins are all writers who’ve also composed on piano or guitar. “The naysayers would say drum machines have no soul,” says Palmer. “That depends on your level of expertise as a track guy. It’s definitely just as emotional as starting on a guitar or piano.” “Nashville’s a melting pot of music,” says Dragstrem. “It isn’t just country music. The music’s changing and people who are coming here have listened to all kinds of music. And they want to create it differently. I’m thankful for people like Natalie and Rodney, so grateful these writers want to work with track guys, because they don’t have to. There are plenty of great writers who can sit down and write an amazing song on an acoustic guitar. Some people might call [tracks] a crutch, which is totally fine. But I love it, and I’ve been doing it now for almost 15 years. It’s just another instrument to create with.” –Wendy Newcomer

Political Content: Off Limits?
(continued from page 1) “People get so worked up,” observes Cumulus Dir./Nash Programming John Shomby. “During last week’s debate I saw someone post something to the effect of, ‘So we have to deal with these two?’ And all of a sudden both sides were just going at it. That’s the polarization right there.” Value Proposition: Shomby, whose responsibilities include oversight of the syndicated America’s Morning Show, counsels air
talent to search for the entertainment value in political narratives. AMS, after all, has to be just as enjoyable in liberal New York as in the conservative markets of the Deep South. “Things like Trump sniffling during last week’s debate or Hillary’s shorter podium,” he offers. “I try to let personalities know that this isn’t Talk radio. Listeners basically come to us for entertainment, not so we can tell them who to John Shomby vote for.” Ironically, it’s a lesson Shomby took to heart while waiting to cast his vote for president in 2012. “There were two guys in front of me talking and one mentioned that Hank Williams, Jr. had been in town the day before to stump for Mitt Romney,” he remembers. “And he basically looked at his friend and said, ‘I don’t understand how people think that a country singer is going to convince me to change my vote.’ And that’s exactly what people are saying when they hear air personalities who aren’t Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity or Glenn Beck trying to sway a political opinion.” Captain Obvious: The decision to air politically tinged content also depends on the significance of the narrative. The most-talked about election in modern history is hard to ignore. “You absolutely can talk about it and I’m a firm believer that you should talk about it,” contends Scripps KVOO/Tulsa morning host Rowdy Yates, noting that he and co-host Sunny Leigh are always on the lookout for the biggest story. “There’s always that one thing we need to mention at least once or twice every morning Rowdy Yates that people are going to be talking about

at the office water cooler or on social media,” Yates says. “And let’s face it, with the shit-show that is this election, it’s absolutely unavoidable. It must be talked about.” Yates joined KVOO in 2011 after 17 years at CBS Radio’s KILT/Houston and has heard it all when it comes to the on-air treatment of politics. “My last two jobs have been in red states,” he offers. “And I’ve been told to never mention anything positive about Democrats; to not talk about politics unless I’m saying something positive about Republicans; to not talk politics or religion at all because I’ll alienate half the audience; and even that listeners are anxiously waiting to hear my opinion – and I don’t subscribe to any of that. Generally, you’re walking a fine line between tune-out and just being informative and funny.” The Deep End: Five years in the market have arguably allowed Yates and Leigh to cultivate a fairly deep relationship with their audience. And as Reynolds explained earlier, that can provide more flexibility with political content. “I get deep enough where people wouldn’t have a hard time figuring out where I stand politically, but I certainly stop short of outright stumping for
Page 13
anyone,” Yates says. “I’ll tell you that I’m a Trump supporter only because I think he’s the lesser of two evils in this comedy of an election. But the first thing Sunny and I talked about the morning after the debate was how bad he came across and that I couldn’t watch more than 30 minutes of it because he looked like a whiny little crybaby. That’s an opinion that Sunny and I both shared.” Still, the hosts stay close to shore. “When [PD] Greg Mozingo first got here in March, I reminded him we were in an election year and had always been told not to talk about politics,” Yates recalls. “He looked me dead in the eye and said, ‘Why not? Especially if it’s funny.’ So when we talk about it, we just try for the most part to end with some sort of humorous tone.” Take an example that aired the morning after last week’s debate when a listener called to inquire about a rattlesnake Leigh had recently discovered in her garage. “They asked if she’d been able to get rid of it,” Yates remembers. “She and her family had been laughing about it during the debate because they’d named the snake Donald. As she said, only a woman could go in there and do what had to be done – cut his head off with a shovel!” Get Real: Air personalities can be authentic and compelling without revealing their political preferences, Reynolds notes. “This is why prep is so critical,” he argues. “We were in a brainstorm on this topic with a show last week when we suddenly realized how exhausted we were from the election and how much we just wanted it to be over. And we immediately realized that we’d hit on a universal angle no one could disagree with. So we came up with a few ideas that allowed the show to be authentic around politics without having to share how they feel about the candidates.” Enter Yates’ and Leigh’s “Voo Crew Eye On Politics” that ran as a benchmark during the most boisterous stretch of primaries. Doesn’t everyone like to razz politicians? “It was largely the biggest headline of the day with a simple punch line at the end,” Yates explains. “But there were people every day waiting to see who Sunny and I were going to skewer or lampoon.” The goal, Yates emphasizes, was fun and laughs. “Because the election this year for a lot of people has been laughable.” Reach Reynolds here, Yates here and Shomby here. -Russ Penuell Lon Helton, lon@countryaircheck.com Chuck Aly, chuck@countryaircheck.com Russ Penuell, russ@countryaircheck.com Jess Wright, jess@countryaircheck.com (615) 320-1450

Tucker Beathard Fight Like Hell (BMLG/Dot) Beathard co-penned all six tracks of the EP including debut single "Rock On." Co-writers include Jonathan Singleton, Marla Cannon and his father, hit songwriter Casey Beathard. Mo Pitney Behind This Guitar (Curb) Pitney's 12-song debut album features previous singles "Country," "Boy And A Girl Thing" and new single "Everywhere," co-written with Dean Dillon and Phil O'Donnell. Loretta Lynn White Christmas Blue (Legacy) Lynn's first holiday album in 50 years was produced by daughter Patsy Lynn Russell and John Carter Cash at the Cash Cabin Studio. It includes three originals (including the title cut), classics "Winter Wonderland and "Away In A Manger," and a recitation of "Twas The Night Before Christmas." Sylvia It's All In The Family (Red Pony) The '80s hitmaker took 14 years off from recording for a second career as a life coach, but now she's back. Sylvia co-wrote the majority of the 12 new songs and worked with producer/longtime collaborator John Mock. Brent Cobb Shine On Rainy Day (Low Country Sound/Elektra) Cobb's latest album was recorded live in four days in Nashville and produced by Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell). Songs include "Black Crow," "Solving Problems" and "Diggin' Holes."
