What A Song Can Do

Those who paved the way and those continuing through the present and into the future of country music were recognized as ACM Honors returned to Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium last Wednesday (8/25). As Dan + Shay’s Shay Mooney said, “I’m truly honored, which is probably the point.” Making his Honors debut, ACM CEO Damon Whiteside welcomed the in-person and livestream audience to a night devoted to “the unsung heroes who make country music what it truly is.” “Country music is strong, is resilient and we want tonight to be a celebration of our perseverance, our optimism and excellence in our genre,” he said. Chris Janson Chris Janson got things rollin’ by recognizing the 55th ACM Awards Industry and Studio Recording Award winners – including Live Nation’s Brian O’Connell (Promoter), the late Busbee (Producer) and Rob McNelley (Guitar) – before transitioning to the special awards. Janson later returned to perform “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” co-written by ACM Poet’s Award winner Curly Putman. Ronnie Dunn played a song he initially wasn’t a fan of, according to ACM Cliffie Stone Icon Award winner Joe Galante, but later declared was Joe Galante a “g*ddamn hit,” “Ain’t Nothing ‘Bout You.” A medley of songs by fellow Icons Rascal Flatts were performed by a trio (continued on page 7)

Fest Foot Forward At Summer Jam When CMA Music Fest was canceled for the second year in a row in March (CAT 3/2), the organization was still hopeful they could pull off something. But, what? Country Aircheck spoke with CMA CEO Sarah Trahern and VP/Marketing Catherine Frizzell about planning, execution and what viewers can expect from Catherine September’s CMA Summer Frizzell Sarah Trahern Jam, airing Sept. 2 on ABC.

CA: Where did the idea originate? ST: Postponing Music Fest in 2020 was heartbreaking. Looking at different scenarios in February/March of this year, we were still hopeful to have a show at the stadium. But if we were to do something at Ascend or a smaller footprint, what would be possible? We talked about this Summer Jam concept at the board meeting in April, but the hard part is fans expected not just a stadium show, but 10 stages throughout the footprint – Riverfront and Music City Center. They want to be getting autographs. Things that seemed pretty clear we wouldn’t be able to do. What was the planning timeline? ST: We looked at moving a little later than early June, [but] the stadium didn’t have any openings. Ascend did in late July and that became the back-up plan. The vision came from our Exec. Producer Robert Deaton. The question was: How do we do a show that gets country music out there to the fans that watched the TV show all around the world, but also make it a little simpler? Every time you have a band, you’ve got 10-11 people who must be tested every couple of days for rehearsals and the show. [Robert] came up with the idea of finding superstar anchor artists who could bring their bands, then base the show on guests and collaborations. It turned out so much better than we thought. We discovered magic elements at Summer Jam that will become a part of Music Fest going forward, because the artists loved it. What were some of those moments? ST: Carrie [Underwood] singing with Dwight Yoakam … she has admired him for years. Brothers Osborne with Dierks [Bentley] and joining Miranda [Lambert]’s band. There’s an energy of people doing music just for the fun of doing music. Many of them hadn’t had the opportunity to do a lot of shows yet, and we were fortunate to capture some of those moments. Going forward, I imagine you’ll see us do even more collabs at Music Fest. CF: We were all talking about what the energy was like out there, and everybody was so happy just to be hearing live music. It was awesome to see and feel the vibe in the venue. CA: What are some of the COVIDrelated challenges? ST: If we had been in this current wave, we Carrie would have required a vaccinated audience, Underwood as a lot of venues are doing. At the time, we

encouraged vaccinated fans and everyone to wear masks. The good news is being in an outdoor venue, we had more leeway. As a TV union show, we had to follow the union protocols, which require testing and masks for everybody backstage. We also had temperature checks and an epidemiologist onsite as part of our medical crew. CA: What role does Country radio Darius Rucker play in Summer Jam? CF: We have some key partnerships in place with SiriusXM, Pandora, Audacy and Westwood One that include tune-in support, on-air promos, digital and social support. We engage with each of them in different ways, including our digital radio partners. We will be pushing out the content we captured backstage via our promo tools page (here). We also sent emails to our radio list, so they get hit up maybe two-to-three times leading up to the show. Radio partner SiriusXM will be carrying the Summer Jam simulcasts on The Highway We also have secured paid advertising as part of our media plan — we’ll have spots airing in more than 25 markets on the day of air. And then certainly some key digital and network syndicated partners, as well. – Caitlin DeForest

Congratulations to Luke Bryan, Royce Risser, Bobby Young, David Friedman, Chris Schuler and the Capitol promotion team on reaching No. 1 with “Waves,” making it Bryan’s 27th career chart-topper. This was Bryan’s 31st single released in his 12-year chart career, meaning an impressive 87% of Luke Bryan his releases have gone all the way to the top. Songwriters are Chase McGill, Ryan Hurd and Zach Crowell. Kudos to Dennis Reese and the RCA team for landing an additional 25 adds for “One Mississippi” by Kane Brown. It becomes the fourth song this year to put together back-to-back weeks atop the Most Added board.

During his speech, Strickland challenged those watching to contact Sen. Chuck Schumer and ask him to support the MUSIC Act. At the end of the evening, Ashley McBryde – who also paid tribute to fellow Arkansas native, the late Lisa Lee, with “Girl Goin’ Nowhere” – performed “She Got The Best Of Me” in honor of Combs, who thanked country music fans. “[They’re] the reason I get to do what I love to do,” he said before promising, “There’s a whole helluva lot more country music in this boy right here, and I can’t wait for you to hear it!” The show will air on Circle TV Nov. 23 at 8pm ET.
