Hybrid WFH Plans Begin To Variant

A not-so-funny thing happened on the way to the pandemic’s end: it didn’t, and the country business is responding accordingly. In the first of a two-part look at the evolving work environment, Country Aircheck reached out to decision makers at an unscientific sampling of companies and stations for an overview of how they are planning for, or adjusting plans for, working in-office. (Next week’s story will focus on a broader survey of industrywide views; take it here.) Hybrid Vigor: Across company sizes and types whose executives replied, only 5% are fully back in the office, 30% remain in work-from-home mode and 65% are in a hybrid arrangement. Rising COVID cases and the Delta variant seem to be shifting views, however. “There’s more caution and it’s coming up on every other phone call at this point,” says one label executive who declined to be named. “It’s frustrating because we thought after the shot this would all go away.” (Ed. Note: The vast majority of individuals contacted for this story declined attribution citing the need to not publicly speak for parent companies.) Triple Tigers President Norbert Nix echoes the sentiments of many who were hoping for Norbert Nix more face time with coworkers. “We have had some smaller staff meetings, and it is evident that in person human interaction has been sorely missed and is very necessary,” he says. “The creative process is better in person – much more impactful than a Zoom call.” A publishing executive adds, “Maybe 85% of it is fine, but you miss those magic moments of collaboration.” The opportunity for more of those moments may now be delayed. “We were pretty well down the road to opening the offices in full, but with a few of our vaccinated employees contracting [COVID] we have slowed that down a bit,” says one label GM. “The office is open for anyone that needs it, but we are very mindful that we don’t need to take any chances in the name of the old way of doing things.” (continued on page 20)

OFF THE RECORD An Off The Record conversation with Monument VP/Promotion Luke Jensen: I listened to two stations growing up. KHOK/Great Bend, KS, where Scott Donovan was the morning host. He’s still there and we’ve become friends. That was the first station I ever set foot in, and it gave me the bug. When I turned 12 we moved to Kansas City and I started listening to KBEQ, which was a Top 40 station at the time. I was not a country person at all, but in 1993 Q104 flipped, I heard a Garth Brooks song and went, “Wow, this is cool.” LUKE JENSEN The last couple years I was in radio I knew I wanted to make the transition to records, and Scott Borchetta, Steve Hodges and Royce Risser were all really helpful in talking to me about that. Then Gator Michaels gave me the opportunity. From a leadership standpoint, those guys led me down that path. Having radio experience as a PD and a jock has helped me all the way through, including in this new role with Monument. I have an understanding of what my client base is going through on a day-to-day basis. The first two weeks at Monument were crazy and some of the most exciting of my professional life. I’ve known Walker Hayes for a long time. He came to visit my station in Tulsa, I got to work with him as a regional on “You Broke Up With Me” and being reunited in this moment is pretty special. And seeing radio’s response – they’re getting it. In my radio days, people hired me to be a PD and let me do that. That’s what my philosophy is with my team. They have a job to do, so do it. Mine is to help them and give them the tools they need to be the best. That’s been lost some places. Hire great people and let them be great. I grew up in cities and since I’ve moved to a more rural area outside Nashville I’ve felt the need to get a bit more countrified. Having more time at the house in the pandemic, I borrowed tractors and tore trees down. I even bought a chainsaw. These are things I’d never done before. Working from home will stick. With this job, you’re at radio stations and shows, talking to people all the time. Very social. It’s nice at home to decompress without people around you. You can’t stay home seven days a week, but having more flexibility is great. Standing in Central Park wearing my Dr. Seuss hat and seeing Garth rise out of the stage is a moment I will never forget. And Eric Church’s Carolina is a record I’ve worn out and will listen to until I die. A kid I went to high school with, Jason Sudeikis, has a show called Ted Lasso. Seeing him having this success is surreal and we’re pretty into watching that show. Reach Jensen here.

into position and launched into ‘Homegrown’ with a splash of color and light on the first note,” he says. “The stage had five tall video panels in the back. The colors were very vibrant through the entire show. The energy of ‘Homegrown’ as [the] first song [was] such a great move. Zac briefly addressed the crowd, saying, ‘We’re so glad to be back. Without Caroline Jones you guys, we’d just be a bunch of people playing in a garage.’ “Opener Caroline Jones made her debut as a guest player with ZBB. She stood out front to perform Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Big Love.’ The crowd really cheered when she let her vocals soar near the end of the song. She’s such a talent.” In typical Zac Brown Band fashion, the show had a healthy dose of covers, including several surprises. Addy notes, “’Enter Sandman’ has become a staple now, but wrapping up act one with [Adele’s] ‘Rolling In The Deep’ was a fun surprise. They took a 10-minute intermission before starting back up with a slowjammed ‘Dancing In The Dark,’ which was really cool. They then segued right into Kings of Leon’s ‘Sex On Fire,’ which was probably the loudest people were singing a cover all night. “There was a moment about 40 minutes into the show [when] the crowd had settled in, the weather was perfect and everyone sang ‘Free’ about as loud as they could – with purpose,” Addy continues. “The show closed with ‘Chicken Fried’ [and] a member of the US Navy was brought out during the song.” The encore was a medley of covers including “Black Betty,” “I Want You To Want Me,” “Two Tickets To Paradise,” “La Bamba,” “Jump,” “What’s Up?” and “Come Together.” Addy says, “Caroline Jones sang lead on Aerosmith’s ‘Love In An Elevator,’ which was not on anyone’s bingo card. During this segment, easily the loudest singing by the crowd was for ‘What’s Up’ by 4 Non-Blondes. As Addy sees it, “The magic of a Zac Brown Band show is Zac puts a setlist together to allow the band to excel and connect

OFF THE RECORD An Off The Record conversation with BMLGR/19 Recordings’ Laci Kaye Booth: I didn’t realize until the pandemic how much my body appreciates self-care, how important it is for my body and mind and how much physical damage stress can do. I’ve started sharing small clips of my demos and new songs on social media. I love getting fans’ reactions! When they like something, LACI KAYE BOOTH it makes me super giddy and proud. I just can’t wait to see what they think of this new collection. I grew up listening to KYKS/Lufkin, TX. That’s where I heard all my favorite country songs growing up. I still remember hearing Miranda Lambert’s “Me And Charlie Talking” for the first time. It was a game-changer. I haven’t heard myself on the radio yet but hopefully will one day. I’m sure I’ll cry my eyes out! My new self-titled collection is what I would describe as “Dreamy Country,” a genre I just came up with. It is very much inspired by all the great country music I grew up on but most importantly, the incredible music of Stevie Nicks and Norah Jones — two incredible women who influenced me from a young age to write my own songs and tell my own stories. The most redneck thing I’ve done lately is going grocery shopping in my cheetah-print house slippers. I wish I had written George Strait’s “Marina Del Rey.” That song has been so special to me my entire life, and it’s what made me fall in love with country music. There’s a dreaminess about it … and the storytelling. I can picture it every time I hear it. My favorite song on the radio right now is Lee Brice’s “Memory I Don’t Mess With.” I first heard it several months ago and completely fell in love. Now hearing it on the radio makes me really happy. I just started Sharp Objects on HBO. It’s based on a book I read last year that I loved. I’m finally getting around to watching the series. I love anything Thriller/Suspense/Mystery.

Congratulations to Chase Rice, Carson James, Lee Adams, Shelley Hargis Gaines, Renee Leymon and the Broken Bow promotion team on notching a second week at No. 1 with “Drinkin’ Beer. Talkin’ God. Amen.” featuring Florida Georgia FGL and Chase Rice Line. It can be said that Rice has never had a one-week No. 1, as both his chart-toppers have now spent two weeks in the pole position. This is also the first multi-week No. 1 for Broken Bow since Rice’s previous No. 1 (“Eyes On You,” CAW 5/6/19). Songwriters are Cale Dodds, Corey Crowder, Hunter Phelps and Rice. And kudos to Stacy Blythe and the Big Loud crew on racking up 84 adds for “Best Thing Since Backroads” by Jake Owen. The KNTY call letters had been on the 101.5 frequency, which was the home of Entravision’s previous country station in the market. Hybrid WFH Plans Begin To Variant (continued from page 1) Mask & Receive: By contrast, responses from radio executives generally reveal a long-settled hybrid model. “We’ve given all of our programming and on-air staff the option and equipment to work from home, but all of them chose to be back in the studios about a month after the [pandemic’s start],” says one large market PD. “Sales and support continue to be optional and many are still working from home.” Adds the GM of another large market station, “Jocks are always in the studio. The OM and I are in three days a week, sales people are in two days and promotions are in just one. We still have daily Zoom meetings.” Vax Machine: Concerts are returning, and only 14% of respondent companies are not allowing travel or event coverage. More than 17% of companies are doing so at pre-pandemic levels. “Critical business travel can be approved,” says one label promotion exec. “Local business meetings and events are fine, but they need to be drivable. No hotels or flights without approval.” A COO at another label adds, “We still view every event as voluntary at this point. With the delta concerns, I expect less in-person attendance.”

As for vaccination, 89% of companies do not require the jab. “We’ve encouraged the vaccine, but it’s not mandatory,” says one exec. “And it’s not really our business, either.” Another agrees, but adds, “No one who is not vaccinated is allowed to enter our offices, including writers and clients.” “We strongly feel if you have a medical, religious or other belief that prevents you from getting it, we need to respect that,” says a label exec. “We have also encouraged very open communication with our various teams as to who is and isn’t vaccinated so each can make their own decisions as to proximity. We also realize that some of the major tours can’t afford not to require it.” Efficient, See: Offering managers comfort is the relative efficiency found during work-from-home lockdown. Only 5% said productivity went down during WFH, with 26% citing higher productivity and 68% seeing similar productivity to the prior in-office norm. Still, those numbers could fall. “Productivity was similar in lockdown,” says a high-ranked publishing executive. “But I have concerns that it’s not sustainable. You need to be able to make new relationships to keep our business going. That is difficult to do not being in-person.” Returning to event coverage can be jarring for some. “At first, productivity was almost better – although barely,” says a major market cluster PD. “But as it went on, people got distracted and a little down. Because we couldn’t get out there and do stuff, we stopped thinking about doing that. When we loosened up, we wanted to be aggressive about owning events, so we kind of whiplashed out there. It’s been pretty overwhelming since that time.” For many label regionals, WFH wasn’t a stretch. “Half of my team is in the field doing that on a permanent basis already,” says one promotion VP. Adds another, “But it’s extremely

difficult to get people’s reactions to music without in-person visits. Hats off to anyone who managed to get music broken during this time. Tough to do without touching, feeling and seeing the music. Variantable: More than 81% of respondents say their companies have no plans for a long-term policy, though most suggest a hybrid is likely. “This has been a paradigm change,” says an independent label SVP. “We can do significant parts of our business without the over-the-top travel budget and being on the road all the time. And we can focus our travel on the things that really need it. We’ll be more streamlined.” “Managing a WFH team has helped leaders think differently about productivity, and how individuals work best,” says CRB Exec. Dir. RJ Curtis. “That will remain. The work force is newly empowered and appears to be taking charge of the office and/or WFH structure. Not to mention, their own lives.” “Remote work is not for everyone and every position; some people don’t do well in that environment,” a label COO points out. “That is something we are not hearing RJ Curtis a lot about. We all have to be honest about that and put ourselves in the best environment to succeed.” This exec recommends the book Remote: Office Not Required for leading-edge thinking on the subject. And, as one company GM says, there’s still something to be said for group camaraderie. “It’s the culture of the company that will get a big boost once everyone can fully and safely gather again in person.” There’s one key word there, however, as Nix notes. “I don’t sense a full return to the office in the near future,” he says. “Our goal is a safe working environment.
