Email = NTR, Engagement

Email marketing platform Campaign Monitor reports an estimated 3.8 billion email accounts worldwide and that approximately 89% of North American consumers are online. For radio, that can mean opportunity to capture, engage and monetize an audience via email. Country Aircheck spoke with industry pros already thriving in the space to get their take on email campaign best practices. Slice & Dice Is Nice: First, variation in audience segments must be understood. Last month, Actionable Insights Group’s Dr. Billy Ray McKim shared findings regarding Gen Z media consumption, including a propensity for Tim Gray email, where he notes Boomers (70%), Gen X (79%), Millennials (79%) and Gen Z (70%) are all likely to check their email multiple times per day (CAW 6/1). Nashville-based Grayscale Marketing CEO Tim Gray urges understanding of each, as well the deeper segmentations within. “Be a good farmer; plant the seed before you water it,” says Gray. “If you send too much email to the entire list, Scott Heuerman you might scare the more email-averse parts of your list into unsubscribing early; however, if you don’t email frequently enough, you might be missing out on an opportunity to engage your more dedicated subscribers.” BubbleUp/Nashville GM Scott Heuerman, who develops marketing programs, fan club offerings and more, says, “Segmentation is key in reaching people with the most relevant information they are looking Jessica Curtis for.” Academy of Country Music (ACM) Mgr./ Marketing Jessica Curtis agrees and says the organization has found targeted email campaigns will directly engage consumers, and subscribers respond well to opportunities that are exclusive to (continued on page 9)

A Ratings Review ... Or Primer

While many readers are familiar with radio ratings basics, questions from those who work outside the realm of radio prompted a “Ratings 101” conversation with Nielsen VP/Audience Insights Jon Miller. CA: What are “share” and “cume,” and which is more important? JM: These are two of the basic metrics radio programmers use to evaluate their audience. Think of “share” as the slice of the pie a station is getting during a given Jon Miller 15-minute period [an average quarter hour or “AQH”]. Out of all the radio listening happening in the market, at that time, among a specific age group, the share is simply how much of that listening is going to your station. It’s a great gauge of how much a station or show is cutting through among all the other radio stations or shows

out there; PDs tend to focus on share for this very reason, and it’s expressed as a percentage. Think of it like market share for a particular store or brand. “Cume” [short for “cumulative audience”] is another way of referring to reach. It’s the total number of daily or weekly listeners a station or show has. How many consumers tuned in, regardless of how long they listened. Cume is therefore a leading indicator of popularity, because it quantifies how many people were reached. What does “six-plus” mean? Persons 6+ is the broadest demographic, or age group, measured by Nielsen’s Portable People Meter (or PPM) service in the top 50 U.S. markets. It’s just a shorthand way of expressing the largest Station A and Station B have the same share among Persons 6+, profile of radio listeners. but break down the audience Television ratings, for into smaller age cells and you example, measure “twocan see Station A has a larger audience among the younger plus,” or everyone over demos, while Station B does the age of two. better with the older demos. Every station says they “won the book.” How is that possible? It’s all about perspective! This is Marketing 101 – finding the right angle in the data. On top of [share and cume], you can slice and dice the Nielsen data by 6-17 18-24 25-34 35-44 45-54 55-64 65+ time of day (what we call STATION A dayparts), gender, age, ethnicity and other factors. Generally, AQH Share is used to determine which station finished on top from a programming perspective. In the sales department, the AQH Rating is often used, since 6-17 18-24 25-34 35-44 45-54 55-64 65+ the ratings are what radio is bought and sold on STATION B from an advertising angle.

Beyond 6+

Page 3

The difference between them is that share tells you how much of the radio listening audience is tuned to a station while the rating tells you how much of the total market population (whether they are using radio or not) is tuning in. What is the difference between PPM and diary? Nielsen uses the PPM system in the top 50 markets in the U.S. and the Audio Diary in the remaining 200+ markets. The PPM is a small electronic device which respondents wear or carry around that can hear the encoded audio they are exposed to. The Audio Diary has respondents write down (or recall) the radio they listen to over the course of a week. How many PPMs are in a market? It depends on the size of the population in the market, and this is true for both the PPM and the Audio Diary service. Everything is based on the statistical concept of random sampling. Regardless of the size of the sample in a particular market, Nielsen’s job is to use the U.S. Census to understand how many different types of people need to be in the sample to properly represent the population. For example, if 20% of a market is Black, then 20% of Nielsen’s sample should be Black. When Nielsen gets too many or too few respondents in a particular age group or ethnicity, the impact of each respondent is lessened or increased (weighted down or weighted up) to reflect what the impact should be if we had exactly the right number of participants, based on the population proportionality. Does PPM pick up other audio like SiriusXM or DSPs? The encoding technology used in the PPM system can be embedded in any kind of audio. Currently, [only] AM/FM stations, digital streams of AM/FM stations and HD stations are encoded for measurement. Does the meter know where a listener is when they’re listening? The PPM uses a beacon installed in each household where we have respondents. This beacon tells the meter when the panelist is in the home, so we’re able to report both in-home and out-ofhome locations in PPM. It is not a tracking device or GPS. A detailed description of Nielsen’s methodology is here. Reach Miller here. –Chris Huff

OFF THE RECORD An Off The Record conversation with Westwood One syndicated Nights With Elaina Producer Ryan Kershner: I grew up listening to Active Rock WMMS and Top 40 WJMO/Cleveland. Go Browns! The front door was wide open. That’s how I got into the industry. A school internship turned into a job, and that’s all she wrote. Some of my biggest champions and mentors have been Charlie Cook, Michael “Mud” Gross, Paul Williams and Mike McVay. Asking for just five influential pieces of music or shows is actually No Sweats: mean. If I have to pick, I’ll base it off Ryan Kershner of the live experience. For that reason, lives his best 311 – if you haven’t gone to a 311 Day, athleisure life. do it. The Killers and Eric Church tie for best front men in the game. Pearl Jam is easily the biggest and best band of my youth. Finally, the G.O.A.T, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and the concert that opened the flood gates to my love for music, The Moody Blues. Honorable mentions to The Weeknd, Tool, Grace Potter, Phil Collins and Miranda Lambert. Again, asking for five is just mean! My favorite song on the radio in any format is Ashley McBryde’s “Martha Divine.” She’s a genius. In 2020, I learned I can handle whatever is thrown my way. And, as much extra work as live awards shows are, I miss them. Everyone is so happy at and around the events, and it’s contagious. Going forward, you can’t expect me to wear sweatpants for a year-and-a-half then go back to clothes. That’s gonna be a tough fit! I’m old school and prefer email and text to social media. Those platforms are for sports opinions and sharing pictures of my kid. He’s super cute! Speaking of my kid, he’s still really young, so it’s been a “nope!” for binge-watching lately. But, if you haven’t watched Money Heist on Netflix yet, you’re missing out. Yes, it has dubover ... get over it! Reach Kershner here.

“Drinkin’ Beer. Talkin’ God. Amen,” featuring Florida Georgia Line. This is Rice’s second No. 1, coming a little more than two years after his first, “Eyes On You” (CAW 5/6/19). Songwriters are Cale Dodds, Corey Crowder, Hunter Phelps and Rice. Kudos to Bobby Young and the Capitol crew on scoring 56 adds for “Beers On Me” by Dierks Bentley featuring Breland and Hardy. To underscore the moment Hardy is having, he was a writer on last week’s No. 1 (“Single Saturday Night”), his own current single (“Give Heaven Some Hell”) moves up to No. 32 this week, and he is a featured artist on two tracks on the chart now, with “Beers On Me” debuting at No. 47 and “The Worst Country Song Of All Time” at No. 44.

them. “We’ve also continued to develop and refine our brand voice and attitude and have experiments with email-exclusive creative assets, including animation and video, to elevate our text in a crowded inbox.,” notes Curtis. Delivering The Good: Standing out among a myriad of messaging is vital, so iHeartMedia VP/Digital Marketing Jared Fallon leans heavily on creating and distributing “easy, non-invasive, accessible content to users who have requested to hear from us.” He also utilizes segmentation to target specific users and avoid becoming spam. “Our ultimate goal is to be ‘the app Jared Fallon that gets me’ so the more someone uses our app, the more personal we’re able to get with the content we deliver,” explains Fallon. Constantly culling subscriber lists and updating data about each user allows Fallon and his team to serve up content the audience is passionate about and will find both

useful and relevant. “But don’t segment your list just so you can say you’re segmenting,” warns Gray. “Ultimately, the goal of your email program is to drive revenue.” Beyond engagement, the experts say email campaigns are also a key source of non-traditional revenue. “Email continues to be the biggest revenue driver when compared to social media,” says Heuerman. Gray adds, “As this can be a very intimate connection opportunity, we believe in approaching monetization thoughtfully and with a very defined intention.” Revenue opportunities include native advertising, a paid subscription tier model, a-list subscriptions, affiliate marketing and merchandise sales. Fallon also points to nonfinancial ROI benefits of email campaigns. “From driving listening to our content to inviting users to create free playlists and explore our podcasts, the ultimate goal is to create interest within our product and build relationships with users,” he explains. While listening habits and ability to attend events have been in flux during the past 18 months, online activity has not diminished. “We saw a huge opportunity during the pandemic to double-down on our already-robust fan-engagement strategy and play an even more integral role in connecting fans stuck at home with stars in fresh and unforgettable ways,” says Curtis. Heuerman adds, “The pandemic showed us people crave connection, so more frequent emails were appropriate.” Extras, Extras: Lockdown also reinforced the importance of continuing to develop and test content. “If we deliver content to a user and it doesn’t sync up with their interests, the likelihood of them unsubscribing is high and our relationship is either over or tainted,” explains Fallon. “You can only miss so many times before alarms go off from people exiting; it’s important to take chances, but those chances should be calculated.” Gray concurs, saying, “Great content is king. Deliver value in your email above all, prioritize personalization, switch up your sender or domain and

Page 13

communicate across departments on results and trends that move the needle while ensuring web, social media, advertising, media buying and sales teams have the data they need to succeed.” In short, just sending an email won’t suffice; it’s paramount to track open rates, click-throughs, conversions, unsubscribes, ROI and various other data points. When asked the best advice they might give to those embarking on an increased email marketing presence, Fallon quips, “It’s like sky diving – you usually can only get it wrong once.” Curtis advises, “Pause before hitting send and put yourself in the mindset of a fan. In a world overrun with automated marketing and robotic, AI-powered email retention that has lost any trace of human touch, we at the ACM never want to lose sight of what our fans are looking for, what they’re listening to and how it feels to lose yourself in the crowd and cheer for your favorite star as they rock out on stage.” Heuerman agrees, adding, “Give the audience valuable, timely information and meaningful value propositions that give them a reason to keep engaging via email.” Gray offers a bulleted list of advice summarizing his philosophy on creating and implementing successful campaigns: • Get to know your audience. • Experiment to see what resonates. • Follow a pre-send checklist. • Choose meaningful metrics to track and measure against. • Personalize your emails. • Have a plan for the holidays. • Quality beats frequency – always. • Nail your timing. • Reward your VIPs. • Review your landing pages.
