Radio Resignation Reactions

Last week, Country Aircheck shared results from a survey of onair and programming talent who have voluntarily left radio to seek employment in outside fields. After seeing the results and verbatim quotes from 68 respondents – 58% female, ranging in age from 26 to 73 with an average of 17.2 years spent in radio (see the complete study here) – several industry leaders agreed to share their reactions and ways they think the industry can step up in response. iHeartMedia National Programming Group EVP/Programming Maynard says, “Aggregating all industries together, quit rates have vacillated between 2.6% and 2.9% over the past year; however, the [U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics] doesn’t break out radio individually in its monthly aggregated chart. They do have an ‘Announcers and DJs’ section on the bureau site, [which is] projected as a ‘growth’ role.” Maynard notes he does not speak for iHeartMedia, but adds, “Regardless of how big the company, most people’s reflection of their Maynard job or industry will directly lie with their local management structure and with the culture created. The same job in a different city – even with the same company – can sometimes yield different sentiments.” He also notes that change is inevitable. “In any industry, it’s important for people to feel like there’s a plan for them, to feel a part of something bigger, and to feel appreciated,” he says. “This is Kevin King a great reminder. Everyone evolves – both personally and professionally – and so does business. Sometimes it’s a good fit; sometimes it’s not. Radio has been on both sides of The Great Resignation, and some of the people starting in radio today, under a different model than how I started, are focused on what could be versus what was. We’ve seen many of them flourish. CMA Fest Returns To The Screen

After a two-year hiatus, June’s CMA Fest brought the fans back to Nashville, and ABC is bringing the event back to television Wednesday (8/3, 7pm CT). CMA CEO Sarah Trahern and the show’s Exec. Page 4 The gap between shows was felt – at least for the first few moments at Nissan Stadium. “It wasn’t like riding a bike at all,” Deaton says, noting some production staff from prior years had moved or retired. “Every year we make adjustments, and it took us a second to get back into the groove.” “We used the experience with Summer Jam (CAW 8/30/21) to inform our booking,” Trahern says. “We had one less artist per night, which let the sets go longer. That gave performers time to not just do their new singles, but also the hits the audience wants and it allowed us to fold in a lot more collaborations.” Deaton adds, “For example, being able to have Dierks Bentley do a song, then introduce Billy Ray Cyrus during his set and spend some time with him, worked really well.” The VIP platform on the Nissan Stadium floor was a holdover from 2019, but with added functionality. “Because of COVID protocols, industry people who previously might have been backstage weren’t able to be,” Trahern says. “The platform gave our board and others a place to be rather than sitting on the floor with fans who are on their feet all night. The other purpose came out of [VP/International Relations] Milly Olykan and me being at C2C in March and seeing satellite stages that weren’t for TV. We thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to have artists in the stadium a couple years before they make the main stage?’” While much of what happened on the platform stage and an additional satellite stage didn’t make it to the final cut, there are exceptions. Deaton explains, “Those stages and bringing in a house band allowed us to get some people into the show who didn’t have full sets like Dustin Lynch and MacKenzie Porter, Cole Swindell and Lainey Wilson, Russell Dickerson, and Parker McCollum.” Speaking of collaborations, the show contains seven among its 24 performances across three hours. As for highlights, Deaton notes, “It’s always dangerous naming names, but everyone agrees Carly Pearce’s moment with Wynonna took our breath away. I thought it would be great, but it was better than our expectation.” Trahern adds, “Backstage staff who knew it was coming wanted to go out front to watch it and feel that energy in the stadium.” Hosts Bentley and Elle King offer a particular energy. “She brings out the fun in him,” Trahern says. “That’s what Fest is supposed to be – it feels more lighthearted than in years past.” The collaborations are high on both their highlight lists, as is Kane Brown’s telecast-opening performance of “Like I Love Country Music.” “When I saw the rough cut, I got goosebumps,” Trahern admits. Deaton adds, “Kane deserves it.” Trahern says she’s watched the full show multiple times and continues to find new moments to appreciate. Thankfully for her and other viewers, in a CMA Fest first, the show will be available to stream via Hulu, so cord cutters and anyone who missed the ABC telecast can still watch. Looking ahead, Trahern and Deaton are already plotting next year’s show, the event’s 50th anniversary. Stay tuned. –Chuck Aly

“No one gets into radio with a design to make a lot of money – although that could happen not so long ago – to have stability, or to retire with a nice pension; we take radio careers to fill a personal need. Radio used to be ... and still is, in some corners ... a place where creative and passionate talent and managers can thrive. Radio is a community’s friend in good times and times of need, and quality broadcasters understand that responsibility and wake up daily with a desire to create and serve. Many of these [respondents] simply lost that outlet in radio. Radio failed them.” Cox Dir./Country Content, Orlando Dir./Programming Operations & Country WWKA PD Steve Stewart agrees with King, adding, “While I do feel employment in radio has fallen victim to many non-radio jobs – new tech companies, the high-paying real estate jobs, etc. – the numbers in this study point to the sign that hung over my first PD’s desk that read ‘Radio Is FUN.’ Is radio fun anymore?” He agrees with Maynard that experiences vary even within companies, and Steve Stewart suggests management is often lacking. “There are leaders who haven’t had training or mentorship but are being asked to lead teams. This isn’t fair to the team members or the leaders themselves. We can’t point the finger at people leaving if we can’t point the finger at ourselves first. Are today’s radio managers able to work well with and understand the differences and commonalities between Gen Z, Y, X and Boomers? I am fortunate to be at a company that recognizes this and values being local, empowering employees, being creative, and trying new things.” He recognizes, however, that most companies and clusters are doing more than ever with far fewer employees. “The risk is finding that line of burnout,” Gutierrez explains. “If you have employees burning it too hard for too long, you run the risk of losing important people. We need to make sure as an industry we are being smart with our resources. Sometimes, good people are tasked with too many things ... we lose creativity that way and start resenting our jobs and situations.” “[Former Audacy WDSY/Pittsburgh morning host] Stoney [Richards] is spot-on in his assessment,” says Reising Radio VP/GM & Country WYGB/Columbus, IN PD Fritz Moser of the burnout risk Gutierrez mentioned. Fritz Moser “[The quotes from the study] sound more like factory work than entertaining. Culture is so important in creative workspaces, and owners and managers should take note of these findings. Chances are, there are people in your building who feel the same as these respondents.” Moser admits that he, too, contemplated a career change some years ago. “I picked up the book 48 Days To The Work You Love by Dan Miller, and I’ve shared it with a few friends who discovered new paths,” he explains. “For me, it helped me explore other opportunities within radio.” Former broadcaster turned career reimagination coach Dan Mason, Jr. of Creative Soul Coaching says, “I’ve coached Dan Mason, Jr. people who work 60 hours a week, but they love their job, and their company culture and environment

energizes them. Employees are also more inclined to work hard in an environment where they feel seen, heard, valued and creatively expressed.” Mason is not surprised at changes both within radio and its employees. “There’s a wisdom that comes with age, and it’s normal to want different things out of your career at 35, 45, and 55 years old than you wanted at 25,” he says. “The pandemic [also] made us all re-evaluate what we need, so it’s not surprising to see a higher value placed on relationship, balance and stability. Money matters, but not as much as doing what you love in a place you love. The salary for radio gigs is declining, but a Harvard study revealed most people would take up to a 23% pay-cut if they loved their work.” Steel City KBEQ/Kansas City PD Todd Nixon concludes, “This is a problem we need to collectively wrap our minds around. We Todd Nixon have to believe people when they tell us they aren’t happy, they’re overworked, they are feeling burnout set it ... and we have to take it seriously. If we don’t, radio risks losing some of the most creative individuals to other professions as well as exacerbating the hiring problem. If radio doesn’t pay better than other careers, we have to maintain the fun, the creativity, the interesting experiences. I believe in radio. I will never not be bullish about radio’s future.
