Why Are People Leaving Radio?

In the past three years, Country Aircheck has written more than 70 stories about on-air and programming talent who have left radio for “opportunities outside the industry.” That trend line, though admittedly unscientific, has been undeniable, so Country Aircheck surveyed these dozens of creatives who’ve left radio behind to ask ... why? The results are telling, if unsurprising. By The Numbers: Of the 68 survey responses, 58% were from females, and ages ranged from 26 to 73, with the median being 39. The average time spent in radio was 17.2 years, with the shortest amount of time clocking in at five years and the longest tenure lasting 48; the median number of years worked in radio was 15. Those surveyed were asked to select all market sizes in which they had worked during their career, and those breakouts are: Unrated (15.9%), Small (58%), Medium (55.1%), Large (31.9%), Major (29%) and National Syndication (7.2%). Since leaving radio for new career fields, 79.7% of respondents have remained in the city where they last worked in radio. Of more than two dozen career fields pursued since leaving radio, the top five paths are: Marketing (30.4%), Digital/Social Media (18.8%), and a three-way tie between Real Estate, Health/Medical and Government/Public Service (8.7%). Parties were also asked to rate eight factors – on a scale from one to seven, with one being “not at all important” and seven being “very important” – that contributed to their decision to leave radio. Work-Life Balance received the highest rating with 44 people (65%) labeling it “very important.” The importance of Quality Of Work Culture/Environment was not far behind (57%), followed by Stability (47%), Salary (43%) and Hours Per Week (43%). (See graphs pg. 9.) Respondents also rated how much better those same factors are in their new careers. A seven indicated the category was “much better,” and a one represented it being “much worse” in the differing industry. Not surprising based on its score above, WorkLife Balance received the highest rating for improvement, with 48 respondents (71%) listing it as a seven, or “much better,” (continued on page 8)

Aldean Tour On Turpin Time

OFF THE RECORD Black River’s MaRynn Taylor goes Off The Record: I grew up listening to [WBCT/ Grand Rapids, MI]. I remember driving home late at night from working at my hometown ice cream shop and hoping I’d hear either Carrie Underwood or Miranda Lambert. I’ve looked up to them for so long and still do! Growing MARYNN TAYLOR up hearing them on the radio shaped who I am today. I was sitting on the steps of the Country Music Hall of Fame during CMA Fest, and someone handed me a little fan that had “60 Second Spotlight” printed on it. I didn’t know exactly what it was, but I ran to the Music City Center looking for Black River Entertainment’s exhibit to find out. When I finally found them, they were shutting the lights off and I said, “Hey, I’m MaRynn, I would like to sing for you!” The age limit was 18, a birthday I was only five days from. More and more of the Black River team came into the hallway to chat until their CEO [Gordon Kerr] finally invited me in the exhibit, and they handed me a guitar. I sat on the edge of the stage and sang. Five months later, the morning of the CMA Awards, I was on Coffee Country & Cody when Bill Cody and Black River surprised me on air with my deal. The first time I heard myself on the radio was on WQMX/Akron. They were so kind to let me play live on air and, right after, I got to hear it in their studio. But one of my goals is to hear it in my car, roll the windows down, and crank the dang thing up! I love going new places and meeting people. Getting to spend time with the stations and learning about their cities (and eating the hometown foods) is really special to me. I don’t take it for granted. It was especially cool going to my hometown station in Grand Rapids and seeing Dave [Taft]. I’ve been waiting to go there as an artist ever since I was six years old. “Every Single Summer” is about summers past and remembering all the good times I had. I grew up going to the Great Lakes, and there’s just nothing like them … nothing like the winters there, either! Something I Would Do comes from the song “Sounds Like Something,” and every song says something about me – something I would do or say. Something I feel, something that would make me want to dance to … or cry to. And my obsession with the show Friends. The whole month of June was an endless gift: radio tour, my EP release, I opened for Sawyer Brown, turned 21 and it was CMA Fest, so I met a ton of fans and new friends. Playing the new music from my EP during CMA Fest only fed my performance bug. I have a few shows coming up, and I plan to keep playing throughout the year. If I’m not on the road, I’m writing on the row. Looking ahead to the end of 2022, maybe I’ll get into the holiday spirit a little early this year and record a Christmas song.

with an unreleased song titled “Ain’t Been There Yet.” Warner/WAR’s Gabby Barrett followed Morgan, marking the only outfit change of the night when she donned long, red, sparkly gloves for “I Hope.” Despite the record high temps, Turpin reports Barrett was “funny, engaging and down-to-earth” during a pre-show backstage hang, where the two discussed Barrett touring while pregnant and the fast-approaching arrival of her second child. Barrett covered Lady A’s “Need You Now” with husband Cade, who was also celebrating a birthday; Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’;” and Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” in addition to performances of current single “Pick Me Up” and “Footprints On The Moon.” Turpin said of the latter, “I feel like this song should have done better than it did.” “I didn’t realize it was this damn hot in Utah,” Aldean admitted to the crowd. “It is hot as hell!” Opening with the aptly named “Lights Come On,” Aldean’s set changed from “closeups to backdrops to fire to marquee doors that revolved band members,” according to Turpin. Morgan, who is signed to Aldean’s Night Train Records, returned to the stage for “The Truth,” and Carrie Underwood joined via video for “If I Didn’t Love You.” “It was flawless,” Turpin says of the video duet. After a group singalong to “Dirt Road Anthem,” Aldean denounced encores as “the dumbest thing in music,” and promised to give the audience everything he’s got, so “when the show is over, it’s just over.” “We’re about to kick this bitch into overdrive,” he declared before launching into “My Kinda Party” and “She’s Country” before closing the night with his debut single, “Hicktown.” “All of the artists seemed to be happy to be out doing what they love to do,” Turpin noted. “The crowd was really into the show and sang along.” She concluded, “People are just so happy to be out and having some fun with music they love!” Reach Turpin here. –Caitlin DeForest

compared to their time in radio. Quality Of Work Culture/ Environment scored “much better” with 65% or respondents. Salary (54%), Hours (53%) and Opportunity For Advancement (49%) round out the top five. (See graphs pg. 9.) In Their Own Words: Verbatims accompanying the responses – unattributed for a number of reasons – are also telling. The most common themes were time with family, needing higher pay, lack of creative freedom, wearing too many hats and not feeling valued by their employers. The term “burn out” was also frequently mentioned, most often tied back to being given multiple responsibilities in

addition to their existing programming and/or on-air duties. “By the time I left, there were four people in the building running stations in multiple markets,” a respondent says. “I loved my radio family, but the job became sitting in a room by myself all day. There was no team to lead and nobody to create with – just four people trying to keep everything running. Frankly, it became monotonous and unsatisfying. The job just wasn’t for me anymore.” Most respondents said they still love radio; many said departing was a last resort. “I was as high as I could go at my station, and my earning potential was capped,” explains one former programmer. “I was ready for better: better pay, better work-life balance, better opportunities to grow in a company. I had no hard feelings toward my employer, but what I was looking for wasn’t something they could offer.” In addition to the improvements in survey categories, some cited other benefits of leaving radio. “My anxiety and mental health improved drastically, and that made me realize just how much of a toll it was taking on me,” shares a former talent. “I’m not working at a dream job, but I make more money while working less hours that are [more] flexible, [I] enjoy three-day weekends, still get to use my creativity and marketing skills, and I work for a GM who has been so kind to me and supports my ideas and has been a breath of fresh air to work for.” Adds another, “I really thought I’d be in radio for life, but there is life after radio. I quickly realized leaving would be a huge blessing in disguise ... and I learned I didn’t need radio that badly. I’ve found a new career that I enjoy and excel at. The compensation and work-life balance are much better than what I had in radio, [and] I’m still asked to host and emcee many local events around my community.” Many comments came down to a wish for radio talent to be allowed to practice their artform while being respected and
