Watts Of Memories: WBCT At 30

With 320,000 watts, iHeartMedia WBCT/Grand Rapids is the most powerful FM station in the United States. Despite a monster grandfathered signal (FCC regulations capped FM power at 100,000 watts in 1962) that stretches from Lansing to Lake Michigan (see coverage map, pg. 10), for decades the station – previously known as WJEF and WJFM – went through multiple formats and failed to gain a firm foothold in the ratings. That changed July 24, 1992 when it went Country and WBCT was born. Leslie Pardue (a.k.a. Lee Cory) was WBCT’s first PD, and in just three books, the new “B93” topped then-Country WCUZ. When Pardue left to program WSM-FM/ Doug Nashville in Oct. 1993, he was replaced by Montgomery current Townsquare VP/Country Content & Programming Doug Montgomery. After 16 years, Montgomery was succeeded by his APD/ MD Dave Taft. Collectively, Montgomery and Taft have programmed WBCT for 29 of its 30 years and led the station to 99-and-counting No. 1 books. They share their thoughts on the station’s ups, downs and secrets to success. DM: The original owner [John Fetzer] only wanted the super wattage for the subcarrier so he could have Muzak subscriptions in offices Dave Taft across Michigan. You can talk about the power of the station, but it was never much of anything until it flipped to WBCT. When the station launched, I was in South Bend, IN. I applied for the PD gig, but I didn’t get it. When Lee Cory left a year later, GM Tim Feagan declined to interview me. I spent $650 I didn’t have to buy a plane ticket, and after Feagan initially passed on me, I wound up getting the job. DT: Wow, 30 years, and I’ve been here for 25 of them. I was at another station in the cluster when I offered to volunteer at the B93 Birthday Bash. Doug Montgomery said, “Be there at 4am.” (continued on page 6)

Drivetime Leaders: Q2

Following the release of the June monthlies, Country Aircheck has analyzed Q2 Nielsen PPM numbers to compile the stations with the leading cumes and shares in morning and afternoon drive. Quarterly averages eliminate the wobbles that can be present on a month-to-month basis. All figures are Persons 6+. Mornings: With the addition of KBAY/San Jose in April (CAW 4/11), The Bobby Bones Show is now waking up 17 PPM markets and, not surprisingly, increases its lead as the most-listened-to morning show. Cume grew from 1.15 million in Q1 to 1.24 million this quarter. WUSN/Chicago’s Melissa McGurren and Austin Huff come in second overall with a cume of 285,900. KPLX/ Dallas’ Wake Up WIth The Wolf Show claims third with 239,300 while KKBQ/Houston and WKLB/Boston round out the top five. KRTY/San Jose ended its 32-year run in the format with a bang. OFF THE RECORD Lanco’s Brandon Lancaster goes Off The Record: My 2022 highlights (so far) are releasing new music, the Low Class Lovers Tour and my Tuesday night golf league. I love being a father, and it truly gets better as time goes on and I continue to see her come into her own with her own personality. Because I’m very aware that this time of life goes by so fast, it hasn’t been extremely hard for me to be completely present mentally when I’m home. I seriously think about Kenny Chesney’s “Don’t Blink” all the time now! I haven’t really shared any parenting tips with [bandmates] Chandler and Tripp. There are already a million YouTube blogs telling you how you’re supposed to parent, so I let them figure it out. Our new music definitely represents who we are now in our lives and where we’ve been over the past couple years. Everything from being a parent, losing our jobs during the pandemic and, of course, there’s still some music about having a good time on a Saturday night. But … I do think our new music has a little more grit to it compared to our previous stuff. The heart of “Low Class Lovers” is feeling like you don’t belong but ultimately taking pride in what makes you different. In the video, we demonstrated that concept by having the couple show up to a strange, masked party, but the masks they wear are kinda stupid elephant masks, symbolizing being elephants in the room. Ultimately, they realize they don’t need the “masks” and lead the charge of partying without them. It’s been incredible to be back out on the road. I think there was a moment where we were wondering if anybody would still want to come see us after it had been so long, but the fans have been showing up and making up for lost time every night with us. We’ll definitely never take it for granted. For the rest of the year and beyond, Country radio can expect new music, world domination and … golf.

WSIX/Nashville lands in third place with its airing of The Bobby Bones Show. Afternoons: WUSN’s Scotty Kay remains the mostlistened-to voice in afternoon drive, with a cume of 411,500, up from Q1’s 374,800. Jason Pullman comes in second with a cume of 356,200 on KPLX; Houston is represented with the next two spots, as KKBQ’s Caitlin “CJ” Johnson and KILT’s Nick Russo place third and fourth, respectively. Kevin Lawrence led the format in afternoon drive with an 8.2 share on WCTK/Providence last quarter and repeats the feat this quarter with the same share. Congratulations to Tim McGraw, Kris Lamb, Erik Powell and the Big Machine promotion team on landing “7500 OBO” at No. 1. This is McGraw’s 32nd No. 1 as a lead artist on the R&R/Mediabase/Country Aircheck chart. McGraw now has sole possession of fourth place on the all-time Tim McGraw No. 1 list, breaking out of a tie with Alan Jackson’s 31 and landing him one behind Kenny Chesney’s 33 (George Strait and Alabama hold down first and second, respectively). In terms of total weeks spent at No. 1, McGraw already has more than any other artist and now extends that record to 73 total weeks; Chesney is second with 71 weeks. Songwriters are Nathan Spicer, Matt McGinn and Jennifer Schott. Kudos to Lee Adams, Shelley Hargis Gaines and the Broken Bow crew on scoring 54 adds for “That’s What Tequila Does” by Jason Aldean. came about and how we approached things. That’s what made the difference. We didn’t have a ton of money. In the original studios, we had traded for consumer CD decks. When those broke, we just threw them away and traded out for more. We did stuff like using 38 cans of Rustoleum to paint a 1982 El Camino to give away. It was nice to be able to cover so much real estate, but it was really

about having the right people on a mission. DT: In 30 years we’ve only had two morning shows: first Neal Dionne and Reese Rickards, and now Matt Gilcheck and Aly Mac. Dave Conrad spent 26 years doing afternoon drive. We’ve had three PDs and two GMs total. DM: Feagan was the first GM, then Skip Essick. Feagan called

me one day and said, “I heard Skip’s moving to California. Who’s gonna replace him?” I told him I didn’t know the position was open, but he should take it. One thing led to another, and he came back after being gone 12 years.

They both always had our back in case we ever crossed the line. DT: I’ve always loved our relationship with our listeners. The Birthday Bash is like throwing a party, and everyone shows up. It’s a great time. Then, when you ask for help with the B93 Roof-sit for Kids or our Kids Count Radiothon, those same people show up. We’ve had a lot of fun over the years, met a lot of great people and seen a lot of changes, but one thing that doesn’t change is the passion for country music in west Michigan. Without our listeners’ passion for country, we wouldn’t be here. We wouldn’t get to do the job we love without them, and we are grateful every day. DM: I keep waiting for the day they dredge the river behind the original studios and find the gold record plaque duct-taped to cinder blocks from the artist that upset the morning show. We can laugh about it now, but it was crazy at the time. I wish the statute of limitations was up so I could tell the really good stories! DT: We all have so many memories, like countless shows at the Intersection or watching an artist win an Entertainer of the Year award and remembering when they were in the office on their radio tour. All the late nights at the Van Andel Arena, the early mornings in the parking lot of Birthday Bash ... I wouldn’t trade them for the world. There is no better place to be than right here at B93.
