Part Two: Country Pride

Country Aircheck continues last week’s look at the reality of being openly gay in the country industry. And while acceptance seems to be the rule, exceptions remain. Albright & O’Malley & Brenner’s Jaye Albright came out as transgender more than 25 years ago. (Read the page 1 story in the Nov. 3, 1995 issue of Radio & Records here.) After leaving the Air Force in 1970, Albright began attending a support group and registered for college as a woman but ended up in radio as her male self. Twenty years of “trying to be normal” ended in 1994 at a lunch with Broadcast Programming/ Seattle President Edie Hilliard. “After taking Jaye Albright time to get used to the idea, she showed her compassionate side and decided to approach it all as a marketing problem,” Albright says. “Edie advocated for me with our corporate owners, who proposed setting me up as an independent consultant and funded a relaunch of post-surgery ‘Jaye’ in place of Jay. The entire staff was positive and so helpful. “It all worked out for the best, and I am now retired, having reached a level of self-acceptance that has allowed me to open up completely about all of the events, people and identities that have shaped me,” she says. Even with the acceptance she’s found, Albright knows deciding to live openly is no easier today. “Just as I discovered back in 1995, acceptance is not a given, and taking the risk of opening up remains scary, never to be taken lightly.” Within the music industry, the ability to be open may be about individual comfort levels. “Once I lived honestly, everything got Wes Vause easier in my life, including in the industry,” says Warner Music Nashville SVP/Publicity Wes Vause. “I don’t think it was a huge surprise to a lot of people and probably made them more comfortable. I never had a bad experience. The only thing holding me back was probably me.”

For The Format: Nevertheless, examples of bigotry remain and, if not that, fear of audience resistance manifesting as business concerns. “There were program directors who elected not to carry my show because of my sexual orientation,” National Radio Hall of Famer Blair Garner says. “And there have been instances where people with whom I’ve worked have made me feel I was being held at Blair Garner a distance. But homophobia is more common with people who are dealing with their own issues, which rings true for some of my former bosses.” A radio personality who asked to remain anonymous says, “A GM once told me I might be struggling in the ratings because I ‘didn’t choose to live around your people.’ My people? There are also companies that would never grant me an interview because of religious-leaning ownership. (continued on page 9)

Managers Help The Music Live On

When asked how he wanted to be remembered, Roger Miller replied, “I just don’t want to be forgotten.” The job, or as he sees it, the privilege of not only keeping Miller’s legacy alive, but also moving it forward with new and contemporary ideas falls to his estate manager, Morris Higham’s Robert Filhart. With estate management becoming more commonplace in country music, Country Aircheck spoke with Filhart, Sandbox Succession’s Josh Matas and TKO Artist Management’s TK Kimbrell about reinvention, storytelling and creativity. Inspired by advice shared by Kathy Mattea (“If you will be a fan first, you will go further than anybody else in this town.”), Filhart Robert Filhart sought to represent estates of artists he’s a fan of, a strategy that landed Morris Higham Barbara Mandrell and Kris Kristofferson in addition to Miller. “When we signed the Kristofferson estate, I got a call going, ‘Hey, did he die?’” Filhart laughs. “Why do we need to wait until someone’s gone to remind people of what they’ve done?” One of the biggest differences in managing TK Kimbrell an estate of a living versus deceased artist, according to Filhart, is he can get the stamp of approval from Mandrell and Kristofferson, though not from Miller, obviously. The absence of the best possible advocate is a challenge Kimbrell faces in representing the estates of Glen Campbell and Chris LeDoux. “Your best promoter of music and an artist is that artist themselves,” he explains. “When you don’t have that artist to do interviews around releases, events or anniversaries, you have to get creative.” Creativity was cited by all as paramount to estate management. Matas, who was tapped to head Sandbox Succession earlier this year (CAT 5/3), is constantly looking for new ways to advance the legacies of clients including Johnny Cash, June Carter and Richard Petty. “We present their character — the DNA, the ethos of who they were — in the purest way then get out of the way,” Matas says. “They were brilliant in their own right, and we sometimes only need to remind people of that.” Matas points to the YouTube Original Documentary The Gift: The Journey Of Johnny Cash as an example. “The idea was not

that we needed to tell a new story, but there was an opportunity to tell a more comprehensive one,” he says. Additionally, partnering with YouTube was “the perfect platform to get Cash to a sub-35 audience.” Filhart used a side of Miller people may not have been Cash Box: Josh Matas (l) with John Carter Cash. aware of – countless funny sayings recorded by wife Mary – as inspiration for a greeting card line that can be found at the Country Music Hall of Fame. “You might read it and laugh, but when you flip it over, you’ll see ‘In Cahoots with Roger Miller’ and his website,” he notes. “If you don’t know who he is, you’re going to go look it up and discover something.” A large part of keeping an artist’s legacy alive is introducing the music to younger audiences – i.e., streaming. “My office and I are constantly in touch with streaming services, reminding them of anniversaries of songs and just jogging their memory,” says Kimbrell. Unlike working with artists releasing new music, streaming consumption is far more catalog based. Adds Matas, “Without the artists, all we have is the algorithms themselves. We have to constantly make sure we’re utilizing best practices to serve the algorithm so they can be in those more contemporary places in the most robust ways possible.” Whether it’s inclusion in the Hall of Fame, the Smithsonian or pitching music for film and TV, the continuation of the legacy and the music that served as the soundtrack of entire eras is the ultimate goal. “To hear my daughter say her favorite artists are Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Glen Campbell and Waylon Jennings speaks volumes,” says Kimbrell. “It’s a testament to the music. I think it was Willie Nelson who said, ‘Once a hit, always a hit.’” —Caitlin DeForest

OFF THE RECORD An Off The Record conversation with Bonneville KYGO/Denver morning personality Tracy Dixon: I grew up in a really small town – 400 people small – and the only radio I was exposed to featured the local farm market reports and obituaries. When my family moved to the Twin Cities area when I was 11, I heard music radio for the first time and fell in love with Top 40 KDWB & Country KEEY/Minneapolis. I was about 15 when I entered a contest for KDWB doing impressions at TRACY DIXON the Minnesota State Fair. I won with my “Billy Madison” impersonation and told the promotions staff as I was collecting my sweet tee and movie passes that I wanted to be in radio. I kept in contact with the staff and got an internship while I was still in high school. My first GM, Bob Fox, will always hold a very special place in my heart. I spent years of my career in Rochester, MN, and Bob was the first to take a chance on me and put me on-air as a solo female host. From him, I learned the value of not just saying the word “team” but truly acting as one. Bob was big on that. I didn’t realize starting out how much that would mean to me throughout the years. I’m now incredibly lucky to be surrounded by some of the best people I’ve ever known in this business, and I value them all. My current favorite song is Ingrid Andress’ “Lady Like.” I’m obsessed! I can’t list my most influential artists without starting with Prince. He is my forever, all-time favorite, and I was lucky enough to get to see him live in the most incredible show of my life. Growing up, I was also influenced by Green Day, Sublime and the Beastie Boys; there was such a feeling of freedom in what they were creating. Now, I find myself connecting more to the writing – Brothers Osborne, Eric Church, Old Dominion, Ingrid – and the stories that are being told in the incredible music they are making. Like many others, I felt things were out of my control so many times last year. Navigating new challenges at work and at home meant learning to be okay with allowing what is completely beyond me. I saw my kids struggle with school and being isolated from sports and friends, and I remember a long talk we all had where we granted ourselves more grace in respecting and honoring our happiness and mental health. At this point, every day is “Casual Friday.” You can’t take away my elastic pants now; it’s an unbreakable bond. I’m an Instagram person and have done a lot of interacting via stories and posts. I’ve also had partnerships with clients built on posts and have engaged listeners to help me pick everything from my bedroom paint color to what I should pack in my kids’ lunchboxes. Making people part of your world is an incredible connection. Whatever I’m watching is approximately five years behind everyone else! I just now binged Breaking Bad and wanted to talk about it with everyone as if it were happening in real time. My coworkers were like, “Yeah ... it’s way over.” I also love ocean documentaries and cooking shows. Those are my relaxation go-to options. Reach Dixon here.

But I’ve been told by others that if I wanted to be out on-air, I was welcome.” Acceptance likely varies by format, with Top 40 seen as most supportive. “Elvis Duran talks openly about his life with his husband,” Garner says. “There’s part of me that’s still in awe he can be that open. Eric and I never went into great detail about

being a couple or being married, but we also never hid it or told untruths.” Husband/ producer Eric Garner adds, “Other formats might be more difficult, though. Christian, of course, but even Urban and Rhythmic, where it can be especially difficult for males to come out. People in radio play it safe because they’re always concerned about Eric Garner ratings, and I think that’s why more people don’t talk about it.” iHeartMedia/Tuscaloosa, AL SVP/ Programming Amber Parker works with two other stations in the state and previously worked at KCCY/Colorado. “The only place I’m not out is on-air ... but that’s in Tuscaloosa,” she says. “Colorado is a little more open-minded about it ... I am open to being open [on air], but it sincerely depends Amber on the market. Parker “It definitely changes my outlook as I look toward the future of my career,” she continues. “Since I work with the Birmingham and Huntsville markets, it has given me the ability to live in Birmingham instead of Tuscaloosa. cards. “I don’t think I would lie about it,” Houston says. “Country personalities do have a harder time than those in other formats. I know of a couple openly gay personalities in Boston and Nashville for whom it was a lot easier. I’ve survived 26 years in the format without ever really talking about it on-air. It depends what you want to share and what your goals and ambitions are. I’m proud of Cody [Alan] and what he’s done, but I don’t think that’s for me.” The name-withheld personality adds, “I’ve talked with my spouse, my family and bosses about coming out on-air, but I’ll never do that. It sucks sometimes, and it can feel inauthentic. I wish I could talk about some of the things that happen in my relationship – it’s all the same as it would be in a heterosexual relationship, and I know it would relate to the audience – but I don’t owe anyone more than what I’m comfortable giving. I don’t lie; I am just selective about what I share, and my marriage is sacred to me.” Who I Am: For CMT After MidNite & Cody Alan CMT host Cody Alan and others, the ability to show country to be a place where all are welcome and can thrive is important. “One of the brightest highlights has been hearing from many gay and closeted country fans who now feel more accepted in our format,” he says. “As I travel to festivals and shows, I regularly have someone walk up and tell me they appreciate my coming out. Gay, straight, white, black, short, tall, conservative, liberal – all kinds of people like country music, and that’s a good thing.” Thoughtfulness is widespread in finding the right balance. “There may be some in our audience who have never met anyone out and gay,” Alan says. “I find it important to represent in a very respectful way. I don’t overshare and never force it, but I have a unique opportunity to show that, just like Luke Bryan sings, ‘We’re all a little different, but we’re all the same.’ Gay folks struggle with their significant others, too – socks on the floor, who’s doing the dishes and picking something to watch. I’ve formed bonds because I share vulnerabilities, and I wish I’d had more of that when I was growing up listening to the radio. Blair Garner agrees. “I’m not a flag-waiver,” he says. “In fact, the part of us that is gay is nowhere near being at the forefront of who we are.” Eric interjects, “We forget!” Blair continues, “If you come out of the gate saying, ‘Hi, everybody, I’m gay!’ you’re inviting some people to not even listen. I’m hopeful we’re known for doing our best to raise our children and being good, compassionate citizens of our country and community. We don’t want to have to duck into a corner and avoid someone because of

a short-sighted decision we made earlier.” Not everyone is accepting of a low-key approach. “A local member of the LGBTQIA+ community found out and told me I have a responsibility to use my platform on-air to represent the community,” the anonymous personality says. “That broke my heart, but I don’t think me shouting from the rooftops is the answer, either. While your life is show prep, you don’t owe the audience everything.” At the same time, this industry pro hopes to see more acceptance in the music. “Country music is all about love – country, families, friends and community. I wish the music getting airplay reflected my life more with same-sex messages and pronouns. There are many people in the LGBTQIA+ community who are fans, but the music doesn’t currently reflect [their lives].” Parker, however, feels increasing acceptance. “Seeing Brooke Eden and Trisha Yearwood change the lyrics and sing, ‘She’s in love with the girl’ really poked my heart. And I’ve been having conversations with other industry members of the LGBTQIA+ community. It’s heartening and exciting to know I’m not isolated here in Alabama thanks to the community within our community.” “Maybe we sell our audience short,” Vause adds. “Everyone in America has a gay relative or friend. In any business, there’s a tendency to overthink. We may think the audience is conservative and won’t want to deal with that, but it’s possible we’re not giving them and ourselves enough credit. We just need to let great talent be great talent and get behind that, whatever it is. Finally, Hubbard/West Palm Beach OM & Country WIRK Dir./Brand Content Bruce Bruce Logan Logan says being open about his personal life led to improvements in his professional life, too. “In this world of authenticity, there’s nothing less authentic than a gay person hiding,” says. “It’s just better [to be out], and my career got better when I started living more authentically.
