Dinner’s A Winner: Country Radio Hall

By the numbers, Thursday’s (6/30) Country Radio Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony featured seven inductees, three very bright chandeliers, one singalong and 82 bottles of wine – at the Warner table alone. Celebrating the industry’s best was, as always, an all-in affair. Warner Music Nashville Chairman/CEO John Esposito was on-hand to collect his “first posthumous award,” the CRB President’s Award. Flanked by a portion of the team he helped build, “Espo” recalled his strategy in getting the label group back to “a proud place” 13 years ago. “I never tried to be the smartest one in the room,” he said. “I just hoped I could bring my passion, organizational skills and sense of humor to this town, [and] help people find joy in their work.” “I don’t know if you know this, but you’re not signing along,” joked Lauren Alaina – who must have been out of ear shot of Shawn Parr – during her performance of Trisha Yearwood’s “She In Love With The Boy.” Yearwood cited the power of Country radio during her acceptance of the Artist Career Achievement Award, saying, “The reason I am still here 30 years later is because of you.” The importance of Country radio remained a focal Bob Call point with 2021 inductee Bob Call, who missed last year’s event after an untimely fall. Radio’s Reach Rosy But Challenged Newly released data in Nielsen’s 2022 Audio Today report show continuing strength for radio versus other media, even as streaming and podcasting continue robust listening gains. While Country is the top format across most demos (share), digging into the trend reveals ongoing decline. Monthly Adults 18+ reach figures for Q4 2021 have radio at the familiar 93%, followed by TV (90%), smartphone (86%), TV-connected devices (81%), PC (76%) and Tablet (46%). Radio’s 93% reach compares Jon Miller favorably with a combined 60% reach for streaming music, podcasting and satellite radio. Meanwhile, the percentage of radio’s total AQH coming from encoded station streams has risen to 12%, matching the high water mark of Q1 2021.

Among adult listeners, Country’s share of listening spans the demos, topping A18-49 & 25-54, as well as Women and Men 18-49 & 25-54 (see graphic above). Only in the Teens demo (1217) does Pop CHR top Country 14.7% to 12.1%. (Format shares are based on Q4 2021; reach numbers – aka cume – are from the March 2022 RADAR survey.) While those share numbers are encouraging, they don’t speak to trends. “The format stats reported in Audio Today are national and based on both Diary and PPM markets,” says Nielsen VP/Audience Insights Jon Miller. “They are also a snapshot in time (Fall 2021). Therefore, granular month-by-month trends aren’t obvious, and you have the recall-based advantage of the diary markets. That said, if we use the PPM markets as a leading indicator of what is happening with Country radio audiences, the monthly 25-54 AQH audience trend is [as follows].”

Congratulations to Morgan Wallen, Stacy Blythe, Ali Matkosky and the Big Loud promotion team on holding at No. 1 with “Wasted On You.” This is Wallen’s first multi-week No. 1 and becomes the sixth multi-week No. 1 so far this calendar year, twice the number there had been at the same point last year. Songwriters are Ernest K. Morgan Wallen Smith, Josh Thompson, Ryan Vojtesak and Wallen. Luke Combs’ “The Kind Of Love We Make” climbs to No. 16 in its third week on the chart making it the fastest riser since June 2019 when his “Beer Never Broke My Heart” sat at No. 13 in just three weeks. Kudos to Bobby Young and the Capitol crew on scoring 91 adds on Luke Bryan’s “Country On.” It becomes his 23rd release to top the CA/MB Add Board.

Upholding a 2018 decision that was appealed by streaming services, the Copyright Royalty Board has reaffirmed a 15.1% rate for Spotify, Amazon Music, YouTube/Google and Pandora for 2018-2022. Decisions on bundled “family plan” services and the TCC rate cap – i.e. percentage of label revenue – went in streamers’ favor. SiriusXM’s The T.G. Sheppard Show has moved from Elvis Radio to Prime Country (Ch. 58), Fridays at 3pm ET, with reairings on Saturdays at 12am ET and Wednesday at 12pm ET.

He attributed his success to “working with and for some amazing people.” Ever the manager, Call worked budgets into his speech, encouraging attendees to find the funds to send younger employees to CRS. “One of the things I think is so critical about this business right now is we’ve got to build the future, and there is nothing better than CRS to do this.” At odds with the extreme heat outside, the inside of the Virgin Nashville event space felt more like fall … of the patriarchy. One of the five women inductees, Debbie Conner, recalled her experience in the maledominated industry. “When I first got into radio, Debbie I only knew of two women in it,” she said, Conner adding she was once accused of taking a job

OFF THE RECORD Knox Country 360’s Michael Knox and Shalacy Griffin go Off The Record: MK: My first memory of singing along with the radio was in 1974 when my cousin, Nonie, was taking me to school and “Billy Don’t Be A Hero” was on. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world to turn that box on – music would come out, and people would talk to me. WKDF/Nashville was our station … really the only one we could pick up out in Ashland City, TN. They played Top 40 during the day, then late at night you could hear all the rock music your parents wouldn’t buy you. SG: I can remember listening to the radio and waiting for them to play my favorite song so I could hit record on my boombox. Trying to be the fifth caller to win concert tickets or hoping they play your song request was such a part of my youth. MK: When I was about 10, I found a box of cassettes my dad had put away in his motorhome. It didn’t really register before then that dad was a rock and roll star from the ‘50s. I just thought he was a guy that went around and sang to make money. I put in the cassettes and listened to the Alan Freed Rock N’ Roll Dance Party. My dad said if I liked Alan Freed, I’d love Wolfman Jack. I was like, “Who?” The way [Wolfman Jack] introduced the songs and talked to the listeners … man, you feel like he knew you. Radio back then was more about being a fan of the music and entertaining you rather than trying to tell you what you should be listening to. Radio is here to entertain and play music you want to hear without agenda. Sometimes it doesn’t feel like that is the case – too many opinions and too many people telling you what you should be listening to instead of playing what the fans want. SG: I loved listening to Casey Kasem and Downtown Julie Brown. It wasn’t just about the music with them … they were also so entertaining. They made you feel like you were a part of their world. MK: In the beginning, we just wanted to make our show exciting and fresh. We wanted to spotlight the “king makers” like songwriters, producers and local executives. You hear from the artists all the time, but who helped them achieve their dreams? I wanted the playlist to be current, not a record label 35-week plan. My vision was to play what was popular now, streaming and downloads, with a throwback programming personality. For this to work, you need people around you who are fans of the format and what you are trying to accomplish. SG: Originally, I was just booking the guests and doing research. I would sit in and try to keep the show going by throwing in facts. I guess Michael got tired of me saying, “Don’t forget to ask him/her about this” and finally said, “You ask.” MK: I really want the show to have a shot in the bigger markets. It’s important to give listeners a safe place to hear the best music we have, unfiltered. Radio is our local pulse on what’s happening. Knox Country is a great place to experience what’s popular now, and we throw in some things to spark older memories. It would be awesome if 30 years from now someone is scrolling through the internet and runs across our show and says, “What the heck is this?” and we blow their mind. SG: I really believe in this show and what we’re trying to give to the listeners. I would love to have as many people hear it to give it the shot it deserves. from a man who “had a family to support.” “Well, guess what?” she responded. “So did I.” Dancing her way to the stage to Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic,” Cathy Martindale echoed Conner’s take on her lack of female mentors. She laughed, “We were the pioneers … so I’ve got a lot of guys to thank.” Those guys included Bill Mack, Ralph Emery, Ed Salamon and Charlie Chase. Martindale could’ve chosen to talk about kissing Loretta Lynn on the lips or her almost-kidnapping by Merle Haggard, but teased, “You’ll have to wait for the book.” “The thing that meant the most to me over the years is what we do for St. Jude,” emphasized not only Barry Mardit, but several fellow inductees. Sharing stories (and songs) from his 47-year radio career, Mardit recounted the time a station in Pittsburgh received a copy of Kenny Rogers’ “Love Or Something Like It” … before he did. Being among the first to play a song was paramount to Mardit, who suggested, “How about you put that on a Greyhound, and I’ll have it by the morning.” Mardit waited at the terminal until 3am, only for it to arrive at 5:30am. “That’s how we got the song on the radio,” he chuckled. Whenever she’s asked why she chose radio, inductee Becky Brenner counters, “Why wouldn’t

you choose radio?” A career spent leaning into the FCC’s direction to base decisions on whether their actions will serve the public, Brenner’s proudest achievements include “hosting the United Cerebral Palsy marathon, providing information during tornados and earthquakes, collecting bikes for kids at Christmas and food for the food bank at Thanksgiving and raising money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital ... Why wouldn’t you choose something that has such an amazing impact on people’s lives?” “I did not expect this,” admitted inductee Whitney Allen. “I never dreamed this big, and I dream pretty big.” Inspired by her father to “never let the bastards get you down,” Allen Whitney vowed to never let her personal soundtrack turn Allen into background music and never turn it down so low she missed the music changing. “The best music of our life may be what we put on the radio today,” she challenged. “And if it’s not ours, it’s definitely someone else’s.” The final inductees of the night, Rachael Hunter and Steve Grunwald, were congratulated via video by artists including Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Little Big Town and Luke Bryan, who summed up the honor with “This is amazing shit here.” “I’m amazed at the unimaginable things we’ve been able to do,” said Grunwald, referencing a bet with Brad Paisley that led to Rachael Steve him delivering cows to a tribe in Hunter Grunwald Kenya. “To this day, every couple of months, I get an email asking me to buy them more cows,” he laughed.
