Ain’t No Gold Folk’s Home

Country Radio’s Top 100 Power Gold list gets younger each year as a growing crop of artists make their way in. There are 36 new songs this year, and 53 that didn’t appear in our 2014 Top 100. No songs come from earlier than 1997, and only three from pre-2002. In fact, 61% of the list comes from 2011 or later. As always, songs move from Recurrent to Gold categories when they are 18 months old, so by default newer titles often appear or debut high on the list. The full 100 from Mediabase 24/7 and the Country Aircheck/ Mediabase reporting panel (June 19-25) is on page 10. Here are the top 10:

It used to be a rarity, but this is the second year in a row that five songs debuted in the top 10 – hits from Kenny Chesney, Brantley Gilbert and Dierks Bentley, and from Sam Hunt and Dustin Lynch, who have never had any songs in the Top 100 until now. It’s the fourth year “Chicken Fried” has held court in the top 10, Brantley and the third year for the Blake Shelton and Gilbert Jake Owen tunes. Other Top 100 rookies are Brett Eldredge (25, 41), Cole Swindell (52, 59) and Thomas Rhett (57, 63), who each added two songs to the list. Chase Rice (79), David Nail (74) and Eric Paslay (35) also bow their first songs. (continued on page 6)

Happy Media: Nielsen On Audience Radio and television continue to boast the most users in the United States and newer technologies including smartphones and tablets are increasing their footprints. That’s the overriding message of Nielsen’s Total Audience Report released last week. The quarterly study examines penetration, users and usage across all media platforms by demographics including age, ethnicity, income and more. Country Aircheck takes a closer look and discusses what one consultant calls “choice overload.” What It Is: For starters, radio continues to sit at the top of the list when it comes to the number of adult users per month with 240 million, which is actually up by a half percent or so from the same period last year. Zoom out for a 12+ view and that number increases to more than 263 million. By demo, P50-64

experiencing “choice overload” and radio must play to its strengths to stand out. “Today’s consumer has so many options it’s like trying to get a drink out of a firehose,” he says. “We have to acknowledge that new options are gaining strength and that the images in our rear view mirror are as close as they appear – even closer in the younger demos.” Fight complacency, be unique and send Phil Hunt capable talent to the front lines, Hunt urges. “We have to provide the most compelling and entertaining content of our broadcast lives with a clear, unique proposition from talent who know how to connect with an audience emotionally and in the language of 2016,” he says. “That means teases of a laundry list of artists coming up ain’t gonna cut it. I’m a consultant, so of course I’m going to recommend that you invest in your products and tell you to recruit and keep the best talent. Source: Nielsen Total Audience Report, Q1 2016 and P35-49 represent the largest blocks of monthly users, with each encompassing 23% of the 12+ total. P65+ is next (18%), followed by P25-54 (16%). Perhaps expectedly, the smallest blocks were P1217 and P18-34, which combined represent 20% of 12+ users. Radio remains second to TV among adults with regard to time spent per day, with one hour and 52 minutes to the tube’s four hours and 31 minutes. The consistency with which radio is listened to across demographics is second to none, however, as illustrated in the graph to the above. Even live TV saw swings of up to 24% across age groups. The biggest “time spent” story may be that of tablets and smartphones, which saw increases from the same period last year of 63% and 60%, respectively. Daily time with smartphones was most comparable to radio at one hour and 39 minutes. Time spent watching DVDs was down by 11% compared with last year. What It Means: Nielsen’s report confirms radio’s continuing strength, but offers a caution flag with regard to increased media competition. As consultant Phil Hunt puts it, listeners are

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE Willing’s Bobby Wills discusses his most influential music: 1. Keith Whitley: I was in my dad’s truck the first time I heard him. I thought, “This isn’t just a singer. You can really feel what he’s doing.” That’s what started me in country music. 2. Garth Brooks: I listened to him as a teenager. He also started me in country music. 3. U2: Growing up, I always thought they Bobby Wills did such a great job with story telling. 4. Lee Ann Womack: Simply, I love everything about her. She’s beautiful and seems so down to earth. She could sing me the phone book. 5. Randy Travis: He does his own thing and is really, really country. I was very influenced by him and the way he delivers his vocals. He’s one of those guys you never get tired of listening to. • Highly regarded music you’ve never heard: I have a friend who wrote songs for One Direction and he’s always asking me to listen. I’ve never heard anything they’ve done. Not on purpose; I just haven’t. • “Important” music you just don’t get: I’m not a big jazz fan. I’ve always had trouble accessing it – from both a musician’s point of view and as a general listener. I can’t get into it. • An album you’ve played non-stop: Garth Brooks’ selftitled album. I absolutely wore that out. • An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “MLK” by U2. I listen to it every single evening. It’s such a beautiful song. • Guilty pleasure music: I don’t listen to anything I wouldn’t share with someone else – and I listen to everything from Waylon to the Backstreet Boys.

OFF THE RECORD: Mark Chesnutt Row Entertainment’s Mark Chesnutt puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to KAYD/Beaumont, TX. My buddy Gary Lee Love still has a show on that station. I first heard myself on the radio when I was 17. I was in my truck and I couldn’t believe it. There was my voice, mixed in with Haggard and Jones and Waylon and Willie. Mark I’d just made my first record in San Antonio Chesnutt called Full Blooded Texan. It was a horrible record, but back then we all thought it was great. Back in those days stations could play whatever they wanted. Since I was the hometown guy they played it, and then other stations all over the state picked it up. In the ‘90s, my favorite person to travel with was George Jones. We were really close. We would hang out on the bus and sing together nearly every day. But lately I’ve been on an acoustic tour with Lorrie Morgan and Joe Diffie. Those two are great singers – and we all like singing together. We sit around and visit for hours after the show. I used to always pick up Levi Garrett [chewing tobacco] at truck stops, but thank God I gave that up. Now, the only thing I have to have when we stop is ice for the beer cooler. My new album Tradition Lives is traditional country. Every song has steel guitar and fiddle. There’s cheating songs, drinking songs and love-gone-wrong songs. I listened for songs for three years and I picked every song on it. I feel like it’s my best work. I live out in the country and I guess the most redneck thing I’ve done lately is pee in the yard. I enjoy that and my wife can’t figure out why. It’s a man thing. That’s freedom right there. My least favorite interview question is, “What have you been doing in the last 10 years?” Some people think I’ve retired. I’ve been on the road non-stop for 25 years. I love my bus and I never even get a hotel room anymore on the road. I’d love to be stuck in Memphis. I love Elvis Presley. I had a private tour of Graceland one time and got to be in the ropedoff places. Then I went to Sun Studios when Sam Phillips was still alive and he gave me the tour himself. It was amazing.

Only three songs moved up 10 or more spots, led by Billy Currington’s 38-position climb with “People Are Crazy” (99-66). Carrie Underwood’s “Undo It” jumped 12 spots (47-35) and Tim McGraw’s “Just To See You Smile” moved up 11 (93-82). A total of 36 songs dropped 10 or more positions, with the biggest declines on Jake Owen’s “The One That Got Away” (22-83) Luke Bryan and Florida Georgia Line’s “Get Your Shine On” (12-69). In 2015, Jason Aldean had more songs in the top 100 than any other artist at eight, with Zac Brown and Keith Urban claiming seven each. This year Luke Bryan jumps from six to 10 and leads the pack, followed by Aldean and ZBB, with six each. FGL, Chesney, Lady A and McGraw each have five. If you’re counting, that’s 42 of the Top 100 songs coming from seven artists.

There are 24 songs by nine duos or groups contributing to the top 100. Zac Brown Band, Lady Antebellum and Florida Georgia Line offerings make up more than half of those. Eli Young Band are on three, and Sugarland, Love And Theft, Thompson Square, Little Big Town and The Band Perry each have one. In 2015, there were nine songs by three solo female artists in the top 100, and seven by duos or groups with a female. In 2016, there are only six songs by solo females – three each by Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert – and eight songs by duos or groups that include a female. Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart” (9) remains the only song by a solo female in the top 20, and is joined there by two songs from Lady Antebellum –”Bartender” (12) and Miranda “Downtown” (14). That’s down from last year, Lambert when there were a total of four in that range, which is also true of 2014. In the last six years, there have never been more than four female-voiced songs in the top 20, and only once since 2010 have three female-lead songs made the top 10, and that was last year. New Country Aircheck/Mediabase Reporter Weights These are the new weights for Country Aircheck/Mediabase Reporters and Activator stations based on audience estimates from the Winter 2016 Nielsen Audio ratings. Weights for stations in PPM markets use a three-month average of AQH Persons. The weights are calculated using this formula: Market rank is multiplied by 10 and then added to the station’s AQH Persons. A station’s weight is determined by dividing the adjusted AQHP by a number that is 10% of the leading Country station’s AQH (KKGO/Los Angeles’ 24,920 adjusted AQHP; WQXK/Youngstown, OH’s 9,500 for Activator).
