Country Pride: Concerns Persist

On this date in 1969, arguably the first major protest for equal rights on behalf of gay people began in New York City’s Greenwich Village. As Pride Month winds down, Country Aircheck asks industry pros about the realities of being LGBTQIA+ in the country music industry. Despite wide cultural acceptance today, coming out in the business has been fraught for some and concerns persist – particularly for those in audience-facing roles, as the onlyrecent revelations of openly gay mainstream artists highlight. On balance, however, those we spoke with point to supportive bosses, co-workers and listeners while championing a format they hope is welcoming to all. National Radio Hall of Famer and former nationally syndicated The Blair Garner Show Blair Garner host Blair Garner and CMT After MidNite and CMT host Cody Alan came out publicly around the same time in 2017. For Garner, that meant getting past a traumatic 20-year old memory of being blackmailed shortly after starting After MidNite. “One of our employees threatened to go to USA Today and tell a story about a respected national Country radio personality who had just won an ACM Award Cody Alan and was, in fact, gay,” he says. “We ended up paying him off – a large sum of money – and it forced me to come out to those who had provided the venture capital to launch the company. I thought I was the Achilles heel that was going to bring down After MidNite. I had an executive tell me, ‘Don’t fuck this up, or my kid won’t be able to go to college.’ It was a very dark period in my life. “Going from that place to the point where I was out on-air, doing a national show with my husband, and being the first samesex couple to be nominated for both a CMA Award and an ACM Award in the broadcast industry – I wouldn’t have believed it to be possible in 1993,” he says. “The listeners have been nothing short of remarkable. People especially respond when Eric and

I post something about an anniversary or photos with the kids.” Husband/producer Eric Garner adds, “The most negative thing that happens is people unfollowing us. But we’ve been fortunate to never have anyone verbally or physically assaulting us. No one writes nasty things in our comments online. We’ve been lucky.” Alan came out to family, friends and industry peers first. “That helped me build a supportive foundation by the time I shared Eric Garner with the audience, which I did first on social media,” he says. “It gave me the chance to tell my story in my own words before taking it on-air.” He braced for the worst. “I knew there would be some hate, but I was pleasantly surprised by an overwhelming amount of love and support and very few negative reactions, which I choose to forget. OFF THE RECORD An Off The Record conversation with Cox WWKA/Orlando MD/morning co-host Ashley Morrison: I grew up listening mostly to Top 40 radio until WFUS/Tampa came on the air in my later high school years. In college, I interned with Cox/ Jacksonville – a “right place, right time” experience that opened my eyes to the different opportunities radio offered. I went from ASHLEY knowing nothing about the industry to falling MORRISON in love with it my first week on the job, and my passion for the industry has only grown since. Alan Jackson’s Everything I Love was my first country album. I was nine when my dad got it for me. I remember playing “Little Bitty” on repeat. Those early roots of a “traditional” country artist helped balance my love for the classics with the new styles in the format and appreciate both. I still love me some Alan Jackson; he’ll always be top five in my book. “Might as well share, might as well smile, life goes on for a little bitty while!” Kenny Chesney in Tallahassee was my first country concert when I was in college. That and the many Kenny shows I’ve attended since are at the core of my passion for country music. The way Garth Brooks handles himself with radio personalities, interviews and fans is something I’ve observed and applied in many areas. Likewise, Carrie Underwood is so graceful yet such a powerhouse and workhorse. Coming up around the same time as Dan + Shay is an experience we can all relate to – being there from day one. The past year has taught me I don’t like sitting still for long – I need new adventures, even if it means a weekend road trip! Professionally, I learned I’ll do whatever it takes to keep innovating and transitioning. We use social media even more now to engage with our audience and incorporate them into on-air segments. People who normally wouldn’t call in may leave comments under a post. When we ask for their phone numbers to be on the show, it’s eye-opening for many listeners to know their favorite radio station or show is truly a phone call away. We connect with our co-workers on video meetings still, and our company continued our monthly “birthday bash” meetings through the last year – there’s usually more than 70 of us on there! My husband Matt and I have been trying to get through Ozark for more than a year now! I am loving a series called Seven Worlds, One Planet. It has footage of animals in their natural habitats that leave you constantly asking, “How the heck did they get this footage?” I highly recommend it if you’re into nature, animals or travel! In fact, I formed a new and different kind of bond with the audience, artists and my peers built on total authenticity, which is the most important thing a personality can do to make a human connection through the radio.” Listener Latency: iHeartMedia National Programming and WUBL/Atlanta afternoon personality Lance Houston came out to his parents in the late ‘90s, but doing so on the radio is a different story. “When I came out, it wasn’t even a consideration to discuss on-air,” he says. “My team in Tuscaloosa talked to me and was supportive. There were no issues, and it was probably another year or so later that I told most of my friends. I’ve always had positive experiences with coworkers and supervisors.” Having on-air roles in afternoons and middays, rather than mornings, plays a role Lance Houston in Houston’s approach. “There’s just not as much room in those shows to talk about family, people you’re dating or anything like that,” he says. “I never felt the need to come out on-air. With social media, I keep two very separate accounts. My Facebook is pretty much locked down to where only friends and friends of friends can find me. I’m thankful I never used my real name on-air. An air personality who requested anonymity says, “I came out to my family and close friends when I was 28, and my parents were not accepting, but they came around and they love my spouse. I’ve also been lucky to have amazing friends and incredible coworkers surrounding me. The first time I came out to a co-host, he hugged me and said, ‘You don’t think I knew?’ That was the best. I’ve also had bosses who were gay, and they mentored me through the process.” Words are chosen carefully. “My spouse and I are raising a daughter together, and when I speak about the family dynamic

on-air, I avoid using pronouns,” the anonymous personality explains. “I say ‘we’ a lot, and people just assume I’m in a straight relationship. If I meet a listener and they ask where my spouse is using the incorrect pronoun, I nonchalantly use the correct pronoun in response. “I want people to hear what I have to say instead of dismissing me because I’m in a same-sex marriage. That’s just one part of my life. I’m a very faith-driven person, and I believe living my life in a kind way and showing love to people is my ministry. If people have trouble with that and miss the message, that’s a problem for me. concerts and events, everyone was so nice to him and I started feeling like I was lying to people. I wasn’t – I just stopped talking about anything in my life.” When Logan went to then-Clear Channel/Charlotte as OM in 2003, he had one last interview revelation for GM Skip Schmidt. “I said, ‘I’m gay, I’ll be bringing my other half and plan to be open and honest about that. I’m not going to hide it.’ Skip was over-the-top telling me it was okay and that he supported it. Once I got to Charlotte, people couldn’t have been kinder. “There were a couple of times people used some words they wouldn’t have had Bruce Logan they known I was gay, but I never really experienced anything negative from anyone in the industry,” Logan adds. “Not at any radio station I ever worked with or from any artists or labels. Greenville is a super-conservative town; Charlotte, while bigger, is still in the South; and I worked in Texas – and, every time, I expected there to be something negative, but there never was. It was such a non-event that, looking back, it was dumb that it caused me so much anxiety. The people who matter don’t care, and the people who care don’t matter.” Next week, part two of this story looks at how bigotry persists, if nothing else, as fear of audience bigotry couched in business concerns.
