Neon Boon? TikTok & Gold Titles

Elevating interest via TikTok isn’t just fancy-like for current songs. A number of older titles have also trended on the platform, including Reba McEntire’s “I’m A Survivor,” Keith Whitley’s “Miami, My Amy,” Patsy Cline’s “Crazy” and Alison Krauss & Union Station’s version of “When You Say Nothing At All.” While streaming consumption typically increases in the wake of these trends, conversations with programmers indicate the applications for Country radio are less clear. Reboot Scoots: Arguably the most impactful to date has been a version of Brooks & Dunn’s 1992 song “Neon Moon,” remixed last July by DJ Noiz (view here), with a Clarence Spalding dance reportedly created in August by Samoan content creator Manumalo Moe (view here). Aided by a label-driven influencer campaign, the original sound generated more than 2.5 billion views and 1.8 million video creations on TikTok alone, peaking last September. Streaming numbers peaked in October with 301,000 daily streams representing a 172% increase over the pre-trend baseline. A version Amanda Cates with Kacey Musgraves (from B&D’s 2019 Reboot album) also saw an increase – 64% over baseline with 128,000 daily streams. While the B&D team certainly took steps to capitalize – see the duo get in on it here – the spark was organic. As their manager, Maverick’s Clarence Spalding, explains, “The kid who remixed it just put it out there. We were seeing people doing the dance and all we did is throw gasoline on the fire.” Maverick/Nashville Head/Marketing & Digital Strategy Amanda Cates says, “That halo effect between TikTok and DSPs very much exists, so it hits labels at the bottom line, which is a good thing.” The economics are beneficial for an older track, too. “The budgets are different for a new act versus an established artist,” Cates adds. “Every dollar is precious with a newer artist, so those are different conversations.” (continued on page 7)

And ACM New Female Artist and Song of the Year winner Lainey Wilson explains that she always believed, “Including lots of times I shouldn’t have.” The level of support from the broader country music industry is “unreal,” and harder to comprehend, she says. “The community has truly wrapped its arms around me ... it felt like a win for everyone.” In The Interview, Spotify’s Brittany Schaffer and Rachel Whitney discuss how the Nashville office’s two operating pillars – partnerships and editorial – work together, and how that affects the country music heard on the service. “We’re looking at a number of different data points – social media, hard ticket sales, festivals, radio, other streaming platforms, who publishers are signing,” Schaffer says. “Knowing who the team is around an artist is certainly an important piece.” That said, music is in the driver’s seat. “It’s fundamentally critical for me and my team that our work is not 100% driven by what the major labels are doing,” Whitney adds. “Our job is to help listeners discover music they’re going to love. Full stop.” Finally, Joe Galante, Jerry Lee Lewis and the late Keith Whitley have been selected for induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame this October. Says CMHoF CEO Kyle Young, “They are all deserving of our respect and adulation, and their elections into the Country Music Hall of Fame ensure that respect and adulation will endure through the ages.”

OFF THE RECORD Mercury’s Priscilla Block goes Off The Record: I grew up listening to Country radio, mostly; [WQDR/Raleigh] was my hometown station. I listened to a bunch of ’90s country. Obviously, I had every Taylor Swift album and knew her songs front-to-back. What PRISCILLA made me fall in love with country BLOCK music was the storytelling. I found myself in these songs, and it inspired me to write about my life, hoping someone else could find themselves in my songs. CMA Fest was one of the best weeks of my life! This was my first ever official CMA Fest, and not only did I play Riverfront, but I also performed my first stadium show. That feeling was like no other. A 360° of thousands of fans in one place. Pretty dang cool. I don’t really have a strategy when it comes to TikTok. I try and post about my life. Obviously, I post my music, but I think what’s worked for me is just showing the unfiltered, raw side of myself. It was pretty dang hard narrowing down the songs on Welcome To The Block Party. Hopefully we can release some of the songs that almost made it on the album. Y’all can expect some new music and headlining stuff! Fans better get ready for a big ol’ Block Party on my international tour. I’m super proud of this show. I mean, we’re bringing the album to a live setting, and there’s nothing better than that. Country radio can expect bangers only, hopefully, in 2022 and beyond. I want to have a super long career, and Country radio is a big part of that. And many shows and, again hopefully, many No. 1s.

Golder Weather: Likewise, it would seem, for radio, where airplay for currents is hotly contested. Gold titles, on the other hand, might be an area where programmers could have more discretion. Nevertheless, an analysis of Mediabase data reveals negligible changes in airplay for TikTok trending country gold. That platform’s relevance for a radio audience is up for debate according to multiple programmers – most of whom asked not to be identified because of companywide PR mandates. “I was aware of the ‘Neon Moon’ DJ Noiz trend, but I already play it every day somewhere,” says one top programmer with oversight of multiple stations. “If anything, I see it as a bit for a morning show. Play some of the audio, talk about it and have some fun. I’ll send a note on things I see from time to time, but you have to hope your jocks are smart enough to do that on their own.” A major market PD adds, “We have mentioned these trends, not always in a positive stance. Why do they have to add a dance beat to a perfectly good song? And you have to wonder about the viewers’ motivation. In many cases, the most watched videos feature a very good looking subject. Are they there to hear the song, or watch the hottie in short-shorts?” Another agrees with the on-air segment approach. “Social media fads are spiked, short term pops of awareness,” they say. “We talk Manumalo Moe

about them, maybe even play a segment or whole song – but it’s not a regular rotation addition. It would have to be enormous and sustained for us to do that.” Culture Club: Several programmers noted that a few of the older songs trending aren’t a great fit for their stations. “We have played ‘Neon Moon’ and ‘When You Say Nothing At All’ all along,” says one top 50 market PD. “Wouldn’t consider the others simply because they don’t fit the station. If a viral moment like Brooks & Dunn ‘Fancy Like’ or ‘Neon Moon’ happens to coincide with our lane, that’s fantastic!” One notes the “very limited” number of titles their station plays from prior to 2010. Another adds, “John Denver probably wouldn’t make the cut.” A network programmer says TikTok trends are simply another addition to the deluge of data. “Knowing your audience and how they use these different platforms is key to deciding how much weight (if any) to give this.” While label promotion teams may not be as interested in gold, other industry segments might be. “I do wonder how long it will be before programmers start hearing from publishers touting these numbers, especially since catalog seems to be a significant (and growing) share of total streaming and consumption,” a PD asks. A large market programmer argues for embracing these moments. “There’s nothing to lose, only gain, by popping it into the playlist and surrounding it with topical chatter.” The Stranger Things-related Top 40 resurgence of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” may be instructive. “It started getting airplay almost immediately after Season 4 debuted, leading to the song gaining traction on TikTok. This song might sound a little odd on a CHR station, but it’s immediately recognizable to anyone who stays plugged in to pop culture.” –Chuck Aly
