CMAF Overflows With Music, Artists

Sunday night’s final CMA Fest show was emblematic of a seemingly new experience for Nissan Stadium attendees across all four. The addition of a second stage on a raised viewing platform at the back of the floor, numerous two-song sets on both stages and tighter set-change turnarounds meant less vamping for onstage hosts and more music throughout. If there has been a deeper slate of stadium performers in the event’s history, its memory is lost to COVID fog. Night-by-night highlights below; see first night coverage here. Gotta Get Down On Friday: The second night (6/10) at Nissan included a strong dose of female star-power and heavy hints of ’90s Deana Carter country nostalgia. Deana Carter took the stage ahead of sunset for a 30-minute set that wrapped with her sing-along-inducing “Strawberry Wine.” Black River’s Kelsea Ballerini was next, donning sparkles and glitter aplenty. She spoke freely about her struggles with anxiety but kept the set upbeat with a medley of early hits, a solo rendition of “Half Of My Hometown” and current single “Heartfirst.” Big Loud’s Lily Rose (“I’d Be You”) and Mercury duo Maddie & Tae (“Bathroom Floor”) were featured performers on the platform stage. Valory’s Thomas Rhett packed a 45-minute set with radio hits including “Die A Happy Man,” “Look What God Gave Her,” and “What’s Your Country Song,” as well as a medley of others. Warner/ WAR’s Gabby Barrett made a two-song appearance playing both her current single, “Pick Me Up,” and first No. 1 “I Hope.” Warner/WMN’s Cole Swindell brought Thomas Rhett Lainey Wilson out for a (continued on page 7)

Speed Of Wow: Urban Tour Preview

Last week, Capitol’s Keith Urban hosted invite-only rehearsals for his upcoming The Speed Of Now World Tour. post-pandemic. Speed Of Now Part 1, for which the tour is named, was released Sept. 2020 amid worldwide touring shutdowns. The time away from the road provided opportunity for Urban to get creative, starting with a new lighting package. “I bring in people that I think are really good – a team from [lighting company] Human Person – and trust them to bring something really unique, but collaboration is what it’s always about,” he explains. “I come from a lighting background. I love the fact that it’s an emotional and energy support for songs, and I always prefer when they are used in that way ... to heighten emotion, energy, or drama. We were here until 11pm last night shaping all of that.” Multiple onstage risers for Making Memories Of Us: the backing band and various Country Aircheck’s Monta platforms for Urban to utilize, Vaden with Urban. as well a satellite stage in the center of the arena are key features. “A lot of the stuff that ends up in our concerts are things I saw someone else do or wish I’d seen someone else do,” admits Urban. “But, keeping everybody safe is number one for me – the audience, my crew and the band. I’m very tactile, but if I’m as tactile as I’ve been in the past, we are likely to have to shut the tour down, which is the antithesis of what I’m trying to do. So, we are trying to find ways to continue to do this night after night after night.” The satellite stage will also be used for an intimate performance during which Urban plans to incorporate photos of his parents and share childhood memories. As Urban’s Golden Road prepares to celebrate its 20th anniversary (Oct. 8, 2002), he says the songs still hold value and weight in the current setlist. He has, however, added new arrangements to some as he prepares the tour. “These songs have proven much more resilient than I imagined at the time,” Urban admits. “They continue to have good bones, so I think they can take a fresh coat of paint every few seasons and not lose their center but still flow with the other songs. And for all the changes that I may or may not have made musically, there are still threads that go through all of it. Playing live is the premier opportunity to show that those songs make sense together.” He will weave together radio hits from across his multi-decade career, including latest single “Wild Hearts;” 2020 P!nk duet (for which she will appear via screen) “One Too Many;” and chart-toppers “Blue Ain’t Your Color,” “Somebody Like You,” “You’ll Think Of Me,” “Wasted Time” and “Days Go By.”

Beyond the hits, Urban is implementing a feature he’s calling Track 10. A large slot-machine-esque lever will be brought to the stage, at which time a randomizer will appear on the screens. Album cuts, older radio singles and Urban’s self-proclaimed “guilty pleasure” songs (including “Ice, Ice Baby” and “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”) will be revolving options, and whatever song the randomizer lands on will be incorporated. “You’ve made a playlist before you got to the party, but you don’t know what the environment of the party is,” Urban explains. “So, I’ve always allowed flexibly in the setlist to flip songs out, extend something or shorten something so that we can be as in-the-moment as possible but still recognize that we’ve got this big production that requires some type of rehearsal. I feel good about this show, but I’ll learn so much on those two nights in Florida when we open.” With multiple elements at play and an ever-evolving setlist, each night on The Speed Of Now World Tour is certain to vary; see a complete list of dates here. –Monta Vaden

OFF THE RECORD BBRMG’s Alexander Ludwig goes Off The Record: Growing up, I loved Alan Jackson, George Strait, Jason Aldean, Eric Church, Dierks Bentley and Kenny Cheney, but ’90s country had to be my favorite. I’d listen to a local Canadian Country station on the radio before we had satellite and of course load my giant iPod with as many songs as I could. The reaction from fans has been insanely positive. Which surprised me a bit, because ALEXANDER people know me as the actor (The Hunger LUDWIG Games, Vikings), and they are just being introduced to this new side that, of course, has been a part of me my whole life. But for everyone to be as supportive as they have from the get-go is just mind-boggling. I have to believe it’s because people see it for what it is. I’m a true country fan. I’ve been writing my whole life, and people get that when they talk to me or listen to my music. Country fans are some of the most authentic people I know. I consider myself one of them ... a lifelong fan. I knew coming to Nashville I’d have this stigma looming over me that I had to bust down immediately. The reason I’ve been welcomed with open arms is because people can see this isn’t some grab for quick success in another business. I love this. I’d be doing this with or without success. I made sure every single person in every writing room I met knew that about me. Whether I’m playing a dive bar or an arena makes no difference to me – I’m grateful to just be here doing this. It’s unbelievable how talented this town is. I thought I could write; I thought I could play. But after meeting some of these people, I realized just how far and how hard you have to work to get to that level. I’m on my way, but I would be lucky to be five percent the writer or player some of these guys are. Obviously, I’d love to get to radio one day ... with streaming it’s a whole new beast. I don’t want to be a flash in the pan artist, so I think I have a long road ahead of me but that’s just fine because it is my passion. “Faded On Me” is about taking all of life’s hurdles and throwing it right back, and like the winding road of the incredible Highway 99, the album is the ups and downs of my life – a rollercoaster of feelings – and all I can hope for is that this road never ends. Balancing music with acting is a hard one. Sometimes I feel like my head is going to explode, but then I remember how lucky I am to even experience that. It’s a day-by-day challenge, but one thing I can promise is that when I have a show, I’m going to see it through. My team and I are very focused on scheduling and making everything work. In 2022, Country radio can expect me to be kissing every ring in town [laughs] and working hard for my shot. Until then, I’ll be making the best country music I can, because that’s what it’s all about anyway.

Congratulations to Jason Aldean, Lee Adams, Shelley Hargis Gaines, Renee Leymon and the Broken Bow promotion team on holding on to No. 1 slot with “Trouble With A Heartbreak” for a third week. This becomes Aldean’s second longest reigning No. 1 song, behind only “Big Jason Aldean Green Tractor,” which spent four weeks at the top in 2009. It is also just the fourth song this decade to spend more than two weeks at No. 1, following Dustin Lynch’s “Thinking ‘Bout You” (featuring Mackenzie Porter) and Luke Combs’ “Better Together” and “Forever After All.” Songwriters are Brett Beavers, John Morgan, Kurt Allison and Tully Kennedy. Kudos to Kris Lamb and the Big Machine crew on scoring 50 adds for “What He Didn’t Do” by Carly Pearce. This is her fourth time to lead the CA/MB Add Board.

The night was punctuated with fireworks over the Cumberland River just after midnight. –Monta Vaden Saturday Night Special: Recalling a 2016 show he played in Athens, GA, Luke Combs compared that night’s debut of “Hurricane” to an audience of 83 people to Saturday’s (6/11) estimated 67,000 fans lighting up Nissan Stadium with their cell Luke Combs phones and singing along to his first No. 1. “I cannot believe I get to stand up here and do this in front of this many people,” he marveled. Revealing the show to be his last before he becomes a father, Combs incorporated songs written for wife Nicole into the set, including “Forever After All” and “Beautiful Crazy,” and new track “The Kind Of Love We Make.” Preceding Combs were Randy Houser and Brothers Osborne. The former performed four songs – including one written during an “extended unwelcome vacation,” “Note To Self,” and “Like A Cowboy” – and the latter’s guitar-and-necklace heavy set featured tracks from 2020’s Skeletons, complete with giant posable (and dancing!) skeletons. Between main stage performances, Frank Ray and Mitchell Tenpenny brought “Country’d Look Good On You” and “Drunk Me,” respectively, to the new platform stage. Randy Houser Country music’s Cabela’s-brand Elvis, Luke Bryan, danced his way through a nostalgic 45-minute set that included “Crash My Party,” “Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye” and “Country Girl (Shake It For Me),” among others, before a Denim & Rhinestones-clad Carrie Underwood closed. Old Dominion punctuated their long run of hits – “Make It Sweet,” “Hotel Key,” “I Was On A Boat That Day,” among others – with the night’s most touching moment. “We weren’t supposed to be here,” Matthew Ramsey said, revealing they were a replacement for an iconic artist who had to back out. “We thought it only right to fill this stadium with a little bit of Alan Jackson’s music,” he added as the band launched into “Chattahoochee.” Telecast co-host and closing performer Dierks Bentley ended the festival with energy, hits and guests including Billy Ray Cyrus on “Achy Breaky Heart” and TV co-host Elle King on their new single “Worth A Shot.” Two-song mainstage or platform sets went to Kylie Morgan (“Independent With You”), Angie K (“Real Talk”), Everette (“Gonna Be A Problem”), King (“Ex’s & Oh’s” with guest Ashley McBryde), Parker McCollum (“To Be Loved By You”), Russell Dickerson (“She Likes It” with Jake Dylan Scott Scott), Madeline Edwards (“Hold My Horses”) and Dylan Scott (“New Truck”).
