Z Results Are In: PDs Respond
Last week, Country Aircheck published results from a consumer study by Actionable Insights Group (AIG)’s Dr. Billy Ray McKim shedding light on the media consumption habits of Generation Z (CAW 6/1). The group, born between 1996 and 2012, are on the doorstep of Country’s 25-54 core, with the eldest members of Gen Z turning 25 this year. This week, a deeper look at the data through the lenses of programmers. Dr. McKim “I’m a data lover; I love seeing all the numbers, reading them, letting them sink in then reading them again,” says Leighton KZPK/St. Cloud, MN MD/afternoon host Brook Stephens. “On the second round, I stopped at each section and asked myself if we were currently doing this, could we, are we succeeding or falling short and are we planning.” She notes feeling hopeful as she Brook Stephens reviewed the results. “[Gen Z] are listening, we just need to make sure we’re evolving with them. The only way this data comes off like a bomb of negativity is if your ultimate plan is to throw some logs on the fire and watch it burn.” “I wasn’t shocked at all, actually, as I expected Gen Z and Millennials to be listening on smartphones and to Spotify,” says Cherry Creek KGGL/Missoula, MT PD/afternoon Benny Edwin personality Benjamin “Benny Edwin” Casebeer. “I wasn’t surprised by any of it, but this study was very informative.” Casebeer cites the extended listening periods for Gen Z among the most encouraging results. “They are listening when working out or during free time, for sure, and that’s an opportunity to grab the audience,” he says. According to AIG’s survey results, a greater percentage of Gen Z consume audio on a monthly, weekly and daily basis than prior generations, with a greater percentage of the group (continued on page 9)

New Hall Of Famers React
During a staff meeting at the home of iHeartMedia/Atlanta MM Drew Lauter, WUBL PD Meg Stevens pulled APD Angie Ward aside and asked her help in moving a few things. “I was thinking, ‘All these guys around, and you and I are moving things?’” Ward tells Country Aircheck. “We walked out the front door, and there was Drew with a bottle of champagne. I didn’t believe them at first, then I started crying.” Ward had been told she was being induced into the Country Radio Hall of Fame with seven others (Breaking News Angie Ward 6/2). These are their stories. Ward found out two weeks before word went out industrywide. “They told me I couldn’t tell anyone until the official announcement, so I had to go back inside, makeup running, and not tell anyone why I had been crying after talking to my two bosses outside,” she says. Other inductees were surprised in a more 2021-fashion: by Zoom meeting. “[EM.co’s] Jack Purcell asked me on a Wednesday if I would join him for a call Friday for something he was working

on,” says retired Bristol WXBQ/Johnson City, TN PD Bill Hagy. “I told Jack Zoom calls were not my strong suit and, sure enough, it did not go smoothly. We finally got connected, and Jack started by saying, ‘Well, Bill, after 30 years in the business and however many No. 1 books, it is my pleasure to tell you that you are being inducted into the Country Radio Hall of Fame.” When the call ended, Hagy was in shock. “I wasn’t sure what I just heard. I expect it will be mid-October before the whole thing becomes reality.” Audacy KFRG/Riverside APD/MD Heather Froglear was summoned to a Zoom call Bill Hagy with her bosses, format captain Tim Roberts and PD Kevin Callahan. “Now, Tim’s a busy guy, and our meetings are usually with all the brand managers together, so I thought I was in trouble,” admits Froglear. “When I got on the call, Tim was very serious at first, thanking me for my years of service, how change is a good thing, and then both he and Kevin got Heather a Cheshire grin on their faces when Tim said, Froglear ‘And so, I’m happy to tell you, welcome to the Class of 2021 Country Radio Hall of Fame!’ I just keep repeating ‘Are you serious? Are you lying?’ and then I started bawling. I’m a crier. I still feel like that 23-year-old college grad who walked into KFRG and said, ‘Let’s do this!’” Hall of Famer Karen Dalessandro had just started a new job in Phoenix and invited Cumulus KIIM/Tuscon PD Buzz Jackson Buzz Jackson on a call to discuss a TV opportunity. “She wanted to talk about the ‘return to normal’ in the community,” says Jackson. “We were talking about milestones along the return to normal, and she stopped and said, ‘Speaking of milestones, you’re getting inducted into the Country Radio Hall Of Fame.’” Jackson says his first call after receiving the news was to his wife. “She and I were at CRS many years ago, Bob Call and I remember looking at all the faces along that wall in the Renaissance Hotel in awe. Rusty Walker, Moby, Gerry House, Terry Dorsey, Bob Kingsley ... it’s surreal to think that I’m in the same club as them. It’s really something.” Country Aircheck’s Lon Helton got in on the trickery when he invited Bonneville/Denver MM Bob Call to a Zoom meeting.
Page 4
“[Lon] wanted to ask me a few questions about how I made the transition from PD to Market Manager for a story he was doing,” explains Call. “After some small talk, he asked me to write down the date of October 13, and then he told me. What a surprise and honor. I am so grateful to even be considered.” Since receiving the news, Call says the reaction has Bob Pickett been non-stop “from industry friends, business partners and the best of all, so many kind words from my Bonneville/Denver family. No, it hasn’t sunk in yet.” iHeartMedia KVET/Austin APD/MD Bob Pickett was invited to a Zoom with his former boss, now Cumulus KUBL/Salt Lake City PD Travis Moon, to discuss a “CMA project” that needed his input. “As soon as the call started, Moon said, ‘Bob to be honest with you this, isn’t about the CMA. You’re a member of the class of 2021,’” Pickett says. “I said, ‘If I’d known that, I would’ve shaved and put on a better shirt.’” Pickett is especially proud to continue the Hall of Fame legacy for KVET, joining station alumni Bob Cole and Ron Rogers. “You look at the names in there, going, ‘I’m not worthy. How can I be in there with them?’” The idea for Zoom call surprises was partially the brainchild of CRB Exec. Dir. R.J. Curtis. “It’s an unbelievable moment,” he says of delivering the news. “I’ve had people laugh, cry and shout; so, let’s record it on video when they find out RJ Curtis they’re going in the Hall of Fame.” But how do you surprise the guy who is normally the one doing the surprising, especially when that person helped come up with the whole Zoom call idea? For starters, the ubiquity of Zoom calls left him unsuspecting. Curtis says he normally has several calls a day with his staff. “Darcie [Van Etten] and Chasity [Crouch] totally got me,” Curtis admits. “We were talking on a call when [Darcie] said, ‘Hold on a minute,’ and suddenly [Hall of Famer] Beverlee Brannigan pops up on the screen. I said ‘Beverlee, what are you doing on this call, are we talking about branding?’” He adds, “It was a very emotional moment. I thought of my parents right away, because [they] were huge supporters. They’re both gone now, and I know they’d be really proud.” A profile of the late Norm Schrutt, as well as the rest of this year’s class, will be featured in Country Aircheck’s October print Norm Schrutt

OFF THE RECORD An informal conversation with Silent House Productions Pres. Mark Bracco: Growing up in New York City, I loved TV, and it was great because I was able to get tickets to shows. I’d write away for tickets to see Phil Donahue, Regis and Letterman. Television fascinated me, and I don’t think it surprised anyone in my family that I made it my career. Booking country acts was a big part of the job when I started at Good Morning America in late 2001. I was the entertainment producer and booked all the MARK BRACCO celebrities and music, so I made it a priority to get to know everyone in Nashville. I made numerous trips and, eventually, we had Robin Roberts come in, shut down Broadway and had thousands of people in the streets for a great GMA event. I listened to Top 40 WPLJ/New York when I was younger, but in my teens, I got into New Wave WLIR, which became WDRE out on Long Island. That’s where I did my first internship while attending Hofstra, which was two miles away. I took requests and got to meet Midnight Oil, 10,000 Maniacs and other artists who’d stop by the station. It was the best internship ever. When I was at ABC News, SVP Phyllis McGrady was very much a mentor, and I’m still in contact with her. Andrea Wong at ABC Entertainment hired me to move to L.A. and oversee live events for them – CMAs and the Oscars, among them. At DCP, Alan Shapiro was the CEO for many years and has long been a mentor to me. I flip around all the stations when I’m in the car. With one kid who is 20 and two teenagers, I get to hear a million different things. When exercising, I still find myself listening to favorites like The Police. Lately I’ve been listening to The Marfa Tapes and Taylor Swift’s last album. My son hosts an eclectic alternative radio show on his campus station, which is fun. He texts us a reminder to listen every Tuesday. Baz Halpin has owned Silent House for more than 10 years now, and it’s become the preeminent creative house for touring acts – everyone from Taylor [Swift], Katy Perry and P!nk to Cher’s Las Vegas show, Harry Styles and the Jonas Brothers. They also produce awards show performances. For instance, they did creative for Taylor, Harry and Bad Bunny on the last Grammys. The goal is to expand further into TV as a one-stop that can handle creative, budgeting, sets, lighting, choreography – soup to nuts, just like they do with tours. Baz is on the cutting edge of what’s to come, so it’s a great thrill and honor he asked me to join. Safety, ventilation, and working with doctors and other health experts to put on shows in a pandemic has been a real learning experience. I’m so proud we pulled off the ACMs safely last September. Rehearsals often have a lot of people around, from the artist camps to the crew. Learning to keep them to essential personnel – that will remain more streamlined. Too many people in one place and the way we all used to work through colds – that’s changed. If you’re sick, stay home. We really needed something to lighten the mood, so what we watched as a family were things that made us laugh like Schitt’s Creek and Ted Lasso, but also went back to Anchorman, Moonstruck and Talladega Nights. Everyone wanted comfort food. Reach Bracco here.

for radio,” he says. “Clearly this group consumes radio and audio much differently than Millennials, Gen X and Boomers. As a format and medium, we need to continue to explore ways to stay relevant with Gen Z while maintaining our appeal with more seasoned generations.” Though Gen Z does show a higher MoJoe Roberts propensity for consumption, how and what they are listening to varies greatly from previous generations; only 48% of Gen Z report listening to AM/ FM radio, and only 34% own a radio outside of their dashboard. MacDonald Garber/Traverse City & Cadillac, MI VP/Programming Robby Bridges notes, “Despite disruptions like the pandemic and a vast array of media options from streaming to podcasting, terrestrial radio continues to hold a formidable place in the audio sphere.” Stephens sees the variety of platforms being used as an opportunity, saying, “They are still listening, we just have Robby Bridges to speak their language. Wild Country 99 sounds great on your car stereo, but it’s still Wild Country 99 via Alexa, an app, online or when they download our morning show’s podcast. We’re still friends, just with a cooler wardrobe.” With Gen Z listening to audio more overall, but radio less than previous generations, where does country music fall within their preferences? The good news is, 79% of Gen Z say they listen to country with 32% citing it as their preferred genre. Pop was the only genre with a greater listening percentage at 83%, but of those listening, only 16% pointed to pop as their preferred genre. Roberts found this stat particularly encouraging for Country

The Meet Is On: Warner Music Nashville’s Robyn Ottolini, Ian Munsick and Walker County with CRS/CRB Board and Agenda Committee members at the annual CRS planning meetings last week. programmers, as did Bridges, who says, “It’s really simple, and most broadcasters know the reality: we ought to be investing in our products, trying new ideas and growing talent. Further, we should be marketing our brands, especially in Country, and be the conduit between the listener and the artists they love so much.” With Gen Z growing up in an age with smartphones and smart speakers as part of the daily norm – 99% own the former with 40% reporting ownership of the latter – and the accessibility of myriad of platforms via which to consume audio content, programmers are looking at ways to bridge the gap. “This generation takes audio more places than ever,” explains Roberts. “The brands that can stay top-of-mind with those fans stand to gain exposure and AQH.” Bridges agrees and adds, “Streaming may pretend it’s digital radio, but it isn’t. Listeners know the difference, but we live in an on-demand culture where it does syphon off TSL but not cume.” Bridges asserts audience segmentation is not a new problem for radio. “This happened as tapes and CDs joined vinyl in the home stereo unit and when cable and Atari joined bunny ear television reception,” he points out. “The more options, the more sampling. But community matters, content matters and surrounding it with music people love matters.” Casebeer also believes local talent matter to forthcoming generations and says, “In last week’s piece, it mentions ‘Radio positioning statements like “home of the hits” raise the question about where future generations will find the trust and familiarity associated with “home,”’ and if it’s going to be terrestrial, it must be with local talent delivering the content.” Stephens concurs, and notes, “Country radio always had the upper hand, because when someone comes to country, we’ve got them for life. From both the artist and radio side, Country has been one of the most ‘touchable’ formats.” Casebeer notes his plan to be intentional with programming in the future explaining, “I can’t afford to alienate a generation
already heavily favoring Spotify and YouTube Music.” Bridges believes the key to capturing Gen Z may lie in asset investments. “Radio needs to invest in RDS dash displays, brand awareness marketing and exceptional talent to create and execute the content,” he says. “Yes, more ears may eventually come from apps versus physical tuners, and yes, the TSL fight is on, but despite radio barely taking these steps now, we are far better positioned than TV and print in this digital age for audience retention.” Programmers also pointed to Gen Z’s propensity for social media platforms as a potential for capturing ears. The generation reports Instagram as the most favored platform with 94% of Gen Z utilizing the photo and video-based outlet. Snapchat (89%), Facebook (84%), YouTube (82%) and TikTok (68%) round out the top five preferred social media platforms for Gen Z, indicating a propensity for visual content consumption. From these results, Casebeer notes his plans to begin incorporating additional video elements into his programming strategy. “I have to create more video on social,” he says. “Instagram and TikTok will reach my new P1.” He also finds the data regarding email usage for the younger generation helpful, explaining, “Gen Z and Millennials will still check their email multiple times per day according to this study, [so] tailored eblasts can still reach the younger audience.” He intends to utilize this information in his digital and social strategy moving forward. “In general terms, Country radio should be reacting swiftly and harshly to the media consumption habits of Gen Z,” says Casebeer. “If I’m doing damage control, an overcorrection is necessary.” Stephens adds, “Once we realize all these new paths are tools and not enemies, it can be empowering. I listen to satellite radio and Spotify, because I can’t compete with them if I don’t use and understand them.” Read the AIG study in last week’s Country Aircheck Weekly here; contact Dr. McKim for additional information here.
