Last week, Alpha Country KBAY/San Jose & KKDV/Walnut Creek, CA OM/PD “Bo Matthews” Gutierrez (CAT 5/23) explained the “covert ops” team that launched the Bay Area station (read here). Below, he tells Country Aircheck about getting up to speed, his talent philosophy and why TikTok is crucial. Do you feel any pressure to get KBAY quickly to a place of prominence? We collectively feel a sense of responsibility to form a Country station specifically for the Bay Area. Just today, we had a call where Bo Matthews I involved a salesperson from the market, someone from another station in the cluster, a promotions team member, Kenny Jay and a few other in-market people to talk about what we are hearing and seeing now that we are rounding the corner of two months on-air. Especially with KRTY going away, we want to make sure we meet and fulfill expectations for Country listeners in that city. We have The Bobby Bones Show on in mornings, Emily Harlan is in middays (CAT 5/19), Isaac “Brooks” Wenzel is APD/afternoons (CAT 6/2) and we’re also going to be hiring live nights. Does your first in-market personality hire speak to your personal philosophy on talent? I’m all about finding great talent and coaching them up to the position. Phil Becker and I found Emily when we went to a San Jose Sharks hockey game. She was the video person up on the board, and we both loved her energy and personality. She has never done radio before, but I encouraged her to apply. I can teach radio skills; I can’t teach personality and energy. I don’t care if you’ve never done radio, never done Country, only worked in small markets ... I believe in this industry, but I also believe we need to lean into new technology and new ways of recruiting now more than ever. One of my favorite movies is Moneyball, and I love the line, “Adapt or die.” I want people who can be well-rounded personalities; be big online; be willing to push, and grow, and (continued on page 6)

Audacy Top 40 KAMP/Los Angeles afternoon personality Josh “Bru” Brubaker – who handles weekend duties for West Coast Country outlets KMLE/Phoenix, KWJJ/Portland, KFRG/ Riverside, KSON/San Diego and KKWF/ Seattle (CAT 4/28) – recently wrapped a 13-episode run on Netflix’s social-mediabased reality competition The Circle. No spoilers for those who haven’t watched yet, but he does tell Country Aircheck how his radio background helped bring home at least Josh “Bru” Brubaker one win (details on page 3).

During the three-week filming in Manchester, England last fall, Brubaker and the other contestants moved into separate apartments in the same building, but were not allowed face-toface communication. Through photos, bios and text chat, they competed for top ratings from each other in pursuit of the $150,000 grand prize. One of many wildcards is the ability of cast members to It’s A Bru-tiful Life: Brubaker participates in one of The Circle’s Circle’s catfish, including all-cast theme parties. this season’s John Franklin, who entered the game as his mother, Carol. Four seasons in, The Circle has become a Netflix phenomenon. Brubaker says his multi-media presence – 3.5 million followers on TikTok alone – helped him get noticed by the casting agents. “Once I was picked, I didn’t know when I’d enter the game, and no one was allowed to meet in advance,” he explains. “John was the only cast member to recognize me, because he is also a content creator. But he didn’t want to say anything to the group, because a 63-year-old woman named Carol wouldn’t know me from TikTok or the radio.” “The [chat] conversations you see in the show are, for the most part, the entirety of our exchanges,” he explains, noting that he regularly had two to three chats per day and would often go hours

without any interaction. “I’m not a reader, but I finished 12 books during the filming!” Brubaker jokes. This season was the first to feature surprise celebrity players – The Spice Girls – new game twists and an elevated level of prize money. “That helped keep us busy, but I don’t think it had an impact on my strategy,” Brubaker says. He also passed time setting up trick shots, playing guitar and throwing out his best dad jokes and #BruCrew puns. PPM Rules: The limited interaction gave Brubaker a heightened awareness of the need for deep connections and word conservation. “I knew my talking time was limited, and I had to trust my gut in feeling out how others were playing,” he states. His intent was to be authentic, friendly and welcoming, and he says he built many relationships that will continue outside of the game. “John and I are very close now, and he is going to stay with me when he comes to L.A. for the cast party. The ability to be vulnerable, communicate well, be myself and relate to others – who I typically can’t see – gave me an advantage. I’m used to sitting in a room talking to myself!” A staunch supporter of social media and its ability to elevate a radio personality’s brand, Brubaker says, “As radio personalities and online creators, we are in people’s Bru’s Clues: Brubaker fills his cars, on their phones time on The Circle playing guitar. and in their faces every day. If we are willing to be ourselves, people will naturally feel connected to us.” And though his fellow players didn’t recognize him, Brubaker says he did enjoy talking about his career with castmates. “On the show, you even get to see a conversation about me being on the radio, because I put it right there in my profile,” Brubaker says. His advice to other radio personalities is to embrace social media and be true to yourself. “I had no idea how quickly I would grow once I started on TikTok, and I don’t think I could’ve ever predicted the things I’d get to do.” In addition to starring on The Circle, Brubaker has recently hosted a red carpet at The Vanity Fair Oscars After Party and interviewed Tom Cruise and Jon Hamm at a Top Gun Maverick premiere event. Country Aircheck declines to spoil the ending, but the news has already broken on social media that Brubaker – thanks in part to his authenticity and ability to connect – walked away with this season’s “Fan Favorite” award and $10,000, which he intends to donate to charity. I don’t want to just make people radio stars; I want them to be stars who have radio as one component of what they do. It’s only a matter of time before we’re no longer reliant on towers in fields to get into radios inside our cars. We are behind, and it’s time to get creative and think big. Live and local is so much more than delivering news and weather until 10am then disappearing. It’s connecting ... on-air, online and in the community. And I am determined we are going to do that. What are the key components for you to grow radio talent into multi-media personalities? TikTok. Seriously, the video elements are what so many personalities are missing out on. [Ed. Note: Cue “Video Killed The Radio Star” and read about video content creation best practices in this month’s (5/17) Country Aircheck Weekly here.] TikTok is amazing, because it figures you out and curates a community based on what you’re spending time watching. I wish all personalities would sincerely devote 45 days to creating TikTok content every day. No, your content is not going to be good at first. No one is good right out of the gate! But the more you do it, the greater the possibility that you are going to create a community for yourself that not only includes listeners in your area – who may not have heard you on-air but could now be interested in your radio

show because they like your personality online – but also could open doors to fans on a national or global scale. If we aren’t depending on traditional on-air listening and have streaming content available, why wouldn’t you want a community of millions of people globally knowing who you are and where to find your radio show? There are also financial opportunities involved with that. Not only for the station, but on an individual level via influencer deals to earn personal wealth. Radio personalities are the original influencers, and we are losing out on eyes, ears and dollars because of a hesitancy to expand our reach using video and online capabilities. Does that global reach play into your decision to stay based in Nashville? Somewhat. I’ll remain in Nashville, but I’ll continue making monthly – or sometimes multiple-per-month – trips to San Jose to spend a week at a time there. I’ll be in-market for big events, concerts or major community needs, but thanks to technology, I can be present without being there. I’m up and on my laptop each morning by 6:30am CT, which is 4:30am in San Jose, working on emails, writing imaging and taking meetings. Plus, giving Alpha a presence in Nashville will, I sincerely believe, help me build relationships within this community of artists, songwriters, label reps and executives. How have your initial contacts with Country radio and records executives been? So far, everyone I’ve met has been warm and receptive. And I’ve sincerely become ingrained in the music. I told Phil I can name every song we’re playing in three notes, and I’ve found some of my favorites. I find myself listening to Luke Combs, Morgan Wallen and Dan + Shay a lot. I love Sam Hunt, too. I’ve noticed a great country song is like taking a good pop song and giving it a fantastic storytelling element. There’s an amalgamation of

sounds that feed into country music, and I can hear elements from every format I’ve ever worked when I listen to KBAY. If you ask me to do a classic country trivia night, I’ll still probably lose, but I’m learning! I actually went to college to be an English teacher, and I’ve done those personality tests that tell me I’m “a learner.” I love learning and picking up new things, so this is an ideal challenge. Do you see yourself jumping into the format more deeply from a networking perspective? I’m so excited to become involved in the community of Country radio. Nearly every career stop I’ve made, there has been a Country station in the building, and I’ve always been so envious of the way the programmers interact with one another and the relationships they have with label reps and the artists. And any time I see an awards show on television – from the Grammys to the CMAs and the ACMs – the artists are always thanking Country radio and their teams. That’s really special.
