Hockey Country Put To The Test

For those who don’t follow hockey or Carrie Underwood’s Instagram, the Nashville Predators are in the Stanley Cup Final for the first time, losing last night’s first in a bestof-seven series to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Beyond the action on the ice, the faceoff between the Preds’ ever-growing fan footprint and next week’s CMA Music Festival (June 8-11) is quite the challenge. CMA CEO Sarah Trahern and her team are ready, however, as she tells Country Aircheck. “The tricky piece has been that there were Sarah Trahern so many scenarios for awhile,” Trahern says. “Starting a few weeks ago, CMT made their decision to move the CMT Music Awards to the Music City Center (CAT 5/9). And now we see that was a very wise decision. We started meeting with them first, coordinating loading docks and logistics to make their experience smooth, since we have that big Fan Fair activation [in the same building]. As a community, we’ve been meeting with the Mayor’s office, the CVC, the Predators, CMT and Music City Gives Back.” Trahern sings the praises of CMA Sr. Dir./Live Events Chris Crawford. “Chris and his team were already so buttoned up on Music Fest, we had the bandwidth to deal with these additional logistical challenges that have come with adding other events.” While there’s no way to predict the future, here’s how the Predators’ schedule could play out: May 31, game two in Pittsburgh, a “Preds Party in the Park” viewing will be held at downtown Nashville’s Music City Walk of Fame Park; June 3 and 5, games three and four in Nashville, will have expanded outdoor viewing parties on 5th and Broadway entitled “Broadway Smash: Preds Party with a Purpose” (more here); June 8, if necessary, will be game five in Pittsburgh, with game six potentially falling on Sunday, June 11 in Nashville. That’s the final day of the festival, and likely the highest degree of difficulty for organizers in both camps. “We were really fortunate in the way the games fell out,” says Trahern. “The initial games will be away. The You Look Good Tour with Lady Antebellum, Kelsea Ballerini and Brett Young looked good to California radio pros in its first weekend. Our assemblage of “beat reporters” were eager to see the headliners after some time off the road, and came away impressed. “When Lady A announced they were going to take a break from recording and touring in August 2015, I thought we had heard their last,” admits KRTY/San Jose PD/morning show co-host Julie Stevens. “After Saturday night’s show at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, I am happy to report Lady A is baaaaack and better than they’ve ever been.” But first, a word on the openers. OFF THE RECORD: Ray Scott The Holland Group’s Ray Scott puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to WAKG/ Danville, VA. They’ve always played a good mix of stuff. One of the biggest memories of my childhood was, every morning, I would hear my dad turn on the radio and they’d play Steve Wariner’s Ray Scott “Life’s Highway.” He loved that song. The first time I heard myself on the radio, I was on radio tour and we were driving through Phoenix and “My Kind Of Music” came on KNIX. It was kind of surreal. I used to enjoy traveling with my friend (singer/ songwriter) Ward Davis, because no matter what, I wasn’t the drunkest guy. I always get beef jerky at truck stops. And I also make sure I have ice for my Yeti. I’d love to have dinner with my grandfather, Paul Coleman. We’d both order a ribeye, done medium. My new album is a collection of songs that go back maybe 15 years. I wanted it to remind me of the music that lit a fire under me when I was young, that spoke to me the most and the loudest. And I think we did that. My last impulse buy was a king-size Whatchamacallit. It had been so long since I’d had one! I may need a king-size brassiere before too long, though. A “bro.” The most redneck thing I’ve done lately is pee outside. They could build a bathroom right inside the door of my house and I’d still walk outside. It’s an animal instinct. But I don’t cock my leg. Only because my knee hurts. I wish I’d written Bob McDill’s “Good Ole Boys Like Me,” recorded by Don Williams. It’s a beautiful, brilliantly written song. It’s very nostalgic and reminds me of my childhood. I can’t go on the road without my Yeti cup. It has to be full of ice at all times. And I have to have Dentyne Ice gum. My least favorite interview question is about the most redneck thing I’ve done lately. It dredges up memories of a painful past, full of rental trailers and debauchery. I’d love to be stuck in Sedona, AZ. There’s magic in the air there. I’d also love to be sitting on the beach in Destin, FL at sunset with a cold beer.

Stevens noted Young’s four-song set included two No. 1s. “The only complaint I had is there wasn’t enough music,” she says, though he did return later with Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood to cover Tim McGraw’s “Something Like That.” Ballerini’s 50-minute set included mixed covers of Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush” and Keith Urban’s “Blue Ain’t Your Color” with songs from her debut album. She and Lady A’s Hillary Scott later donned matching denim jackets for a cover of Beyonce’s “Crazy In Love.” “She just shares her whole self and the audience is mesmerized from the first note to the last wave goodbye,” Stevens says. “Oh, and did I mention that she plays guitar, keyboard, and drums?” KUZZ/Bakersfield PD/middayer Brent Michaels also approved. “Honestly, they were fantastic picks as openers,” he says. “You can see they both have the potential to be big stars.” On to the main event. “The stage is a great accompaniment to the vibe of the show without being too much,” says KBEB/Sacramento PD Bryan “B-Dub” Washington. “Many moving parts on the stage match the vibe of the song that is playing at the time.” The show opens on a dimly lit stage with a single trumpet player and one trombone player. “They light up the crowd just the two of them playing for what seems like a good couple of minutes,” says KRTY GM Nate Deaton. The lights come up as the trio emerges from behind three columns singing “Downtown.” Deaton adds, “The two guys playing the horns are present pretty much all night and make a great show even better with their presence.” Michaels agrees. “The horn section makes such a big difference on this tour. It made the production and band sound bigger.” Meanwhile, the headliners themselves were fully recharged. MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE Warner/Chappell’s Courtney Cole discusses her most influential music: 1. Miranda Lambert’s Revolution: The songwriting on that album really inspired me and changed the way I approached writing. It was so real, honest and simple. Listening to those songs made me feel like home. Courtney Cole 2. Mariah Carey’s Daydream and Music Box: When I was growing up, I had this little boom box in my house and it had a microphone. I would sit in my room with those albums and try to hit every note. I feel like she taught me how to sing. 3. Shania Twain: Everything about her influenced me. Songs like “Any Man Of Mine,” “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!,” “Honey, I’m Home,” “From This Moment On” – all of those songs exuded confidence and sass. 4. The Dixie Chicks: I loved their melodies, harmonies and down-home lyrics. And their all-around girl power. 5. Celine Dion’s Let’s Talk About Love: That album just got me. And her vocal range, like Mariah Carey. Big voices are my favorite. • Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: I have not yet listened to Beyoncé’s Lemonade record. • “Important” music you just don’t get: I absolutely appreciate rock music, but I don’t think I ever just listen to rock bands. • An album you listened to incessantly: I’ve been listening to Jon Bellion’s album The Human Condition a ton lately. It’s his production, and a lot of the sounds he uses are unique. And his songwriting is on another level to me – very stream-of-consciousness and emotional. • Obscure or non-country music everyone should listen to right now: Bon Iver. I feel like every record he puts out is a piece of art. It’s all over the place. And very relaxing. • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: Dashboard Confessional. Even though I’m pretty proud to admit it. I love it.

and exhorting them to stand, sing, clap, cheer.” Stevens enjoyed Ballerini so much, she was worried Lady A might have been upstaged. “That was unfounded,” she says. “There is a new spark and feeling to these guys that will knock you out.” In addition to the covers with Young and Ballerini, Lady A covered the Rolling Stones “Honky Tonk Women,” Shania Twain’s “You’re Still The One,” and honored the late Gregg Allman with “Midnight Rider” during Saturday’s show. Mailey’s favorite moment was a “high-octane” version of “Love Don’t Live Here.” “They turned it an almost-southern rock raver, and absolutely killed it,” he says. Washington suggests, “The entire crowd singing to their final song ‘Need You Now’ was probably the coolest moment.” Deaton counters, “The single ‘You Look Good’ is clearly a highlight of the night. The crowd reaction to that live version with the horns just rocks the house.” And Michaels sums it up: “I think you could tell that the band seemed genuinely excited to be back out performing as Lady A.” The tour rolls on in Albuquerque, Phoenix, Los Angeles and San Diego this week. –Paul Williams

And while we’re starting to load in the Walk of Fame Park and the Music City Center around then, it didn’t present too many challenges we couldn’t work around. Everyone has really partnered together to make it a great experience for Nashville, and ideally, a great experience for the Predators fans and the people coming in from around the country for the Stanley Cup games. “If we have a game six, which will be Sunday, June 11, that will probably be the most challenging day,” Trahern says. “But I feel like we have really strong plans together. Nobody would be happier than me if we take the series in five,” she says, laughing. Crowd management and logistics are one thing, but for the local country music and radio community, Sunday could pose quite a dilemma. “I was meeting with two industry leaders on our board,” says Trahern. “They both have acts performing Sunday night (6/11) at the stadium and said, ‘Oh this is going to be hard. I need to be at the stadium with my artist, but I’ll want to be watching the game at Bridgestone.’ I think that may be one of the biggest personal challenges – where do I go? How do I get game updates while I’m at the stadium?” Because the festival’s Nightly Concerts are across the Cumberland River at Nissan Stadium, they won’t be affected by the Predators’ schedule. And, reports Trahern, neither will the performances on the other side of the river at Ascend Amphitheater. “We have great shows there in the evening, which is new for us this year, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. But we didn’t book Sunday, just in case we had a game. It really doesn’t impact us, other than coordinating in places where we would normally be madly tearing stages down Sunday afternoon. We might be delayed because

there are people in the footprint. It may come down to changing our labor schedules and some of our logistics.” If there is a June 11 game, the biggest impact will be traffic. “We close down all of our daytime stages around 5:30, which is about the time they would be kicking off any pre-NHL events that night,” Trahern says. “So we don’t have to make any changes to our booking. We’re meeting with the Predators to see how we can continue to promote them and the Stanley Cup Final throughout our footprint during the day.” With crowd safety at even higher priority in light of the recent terrorist bombing in Manchester, England, Trahern says every precaution is being taken. “We certainly take the safety of our fans first and foremost, on a year-round basis,” she says. “We’ve been meeting with the police, FBI and Homeland Security going back at least six months. We don’t get into specific plans with anybody, but I will just say Crowd Sourcing: Watching game that with so many one in Nashville. other events going on, we’ve had coordinated security plan meetings. We would’ve done that whether [the bombing in] Manchester took place or not. “It’s an exciting time to be in Nashville and I just ask for everybody’s patience with the traffic,” concludes Trahern. “The music is going to be amazing.
