“The first thing I want to see is someone throwing up in a garbage can,” says Throwback 2K host Chris Cruise in one of the more colorful tips to result from the CRS panel “Video Builds The Radio Star.” Country Aircheck asked Cruise, fellow panelists Nick Steele (KWJJ/Portland mornings) and Zack Massey (Luke Combs Dir./Creative) to take the session’s nuts and bolts approach to the next level. “At the core, creating videos – produced social media bits, live socials, edited clips or longform client productions – is all about great content, and the ‘Radio 101 Rules’ apply,” says WUBE/Cincinnati APD/afternoon personality Jesse Tack, who conceptualized, produced and hosted the panel. “How do I appeal to the person who cares the least?” He and the panelists concur that radio personalities have leaned on “doing radio on video” instead of focusing on compelling content. “Video lives in a different world, and a 30-second video inviting listeners out to a remote broadcast location isn’t going to produce results the way you think it might,” Tack notes. Captain Obvious: Panelists note the importance of leading with a hook. “Your name is on the account, your logo is on the video, and your name and title are in the title of the video; I don’t need you to introduce yourself,” says Cruise before dropping this story’s opening line, which we won’t regurgitate here. “Then you come back and say, ‘This is what happened.’ Give the best part away first.” And titles should be eye-catching. Known for backyard barbecues and as the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day more specifically honors those who have died while serving their country. Congratulations to Luke Combs, Steve Hodges, Shane Allen, Lauren Thomas and the Columbia promotion team on landing at No. 1 with “Doin’ This.” The first release from Combs’ upcoming third album Growin’ Up becomes his 13th No. 1 out of 13 singles, extending his record for most consecutive No. 1s to start an artist’s career. Since he landed his first No. 1 five years Luke Combs ago this week with “Hurricane,” Combs has racked up 27 total weeks atop the chart. Songwriters are Chip Matthews, Jonathan Singleton and Combs. Kudos to Dennis Reese and the RCA crew on scoring 28 additional adds on Kane Brown’s “Like I Love Country Music” as it tops the Add Board for a second consecutive week.

It is the first song to top the Add Board for consecutive weeks since Brown’s “One Mississippi” did so last August. “Like I Love Country Music” also leaps from 38 to 26 in its second week, making it the fastest song to reach that point since Jan. 2021 when “Undivided” by Tim McGraw and Tyler Hubbard debuted at No. 26.

Pearl’s Garth Brooks will take his Stadium Tour to Highmark Stadium in Buffalo, NY July 23. “The WXYZ After Show For May 18 isn’t interesting and doesn’t tell me what I’m about to see or why I should watch,” explains Tack. Among the most important skills for winning video content is editing. Filming at a natural, comfortable pace and order then editing to create the most appealing, quick-hitting video is made easier with an assist from current technology. Most social media apps include easy-edit functions for trimming, adding graphics and captions, and publishing in the platform’s preferred format. But for more in-depth editing, the group recommends iMovie for iPhones or Splice for Apple and Android devices. “If you can edit audio, you can edit video,” Tack assures. “The two are very similar, and apps have made it easier than ever. Yes, you can learn and use Adobe Premiere, but it’s no longer necessary.” Another user friendly option for editing and producing video content is Canva, which provides templates and sizing guidelines for all social media platforms, allows users to create templates for future projects that will follow the same guidelines (think repeating weekly video benchmarks) and is built for simplicity and intuitive use by beginners. “The only reason I’m not currently using Canva is my free trial ran out,” laughs Tack, who says a pro-level subscription is $120/year. An online platform making content creation easier is Descript. The service, which ranges in price from $12/month to $24/ month, takes uploaded video and creates a text transcription. “You can then read the text and edit the transcription, and anything you remove in the text will be automatically deleted from your video,” Tack explains. Akin to a visual VoxPro, Descript requires up to 24 hours for a full transcription to be generated, but shorter pieces can be transcribed in real time. “Once you see the transcription, you can easily cut out filler words or repetitive statements and make a seamless edit,” notes Tack. Carey what kind of microphone she’s using. “She doesn’t sound good because of the microphone,” he jokes. “The No. 1 most important thing when it comes to video quality is lighting.” Steele’s How To Radio series devotes a full session to “How To Light Your Videos;” watch here. His tips include how to utilize sunlight, various ways to prevent shadowing, creating depth with lighting and affordable lighting techniques for at-home use. Cruise also dedicates an episode of Home Studio Catalyst to “How To Be More Confident On Camera” here. “The only way to really get better is to do it over and over and over again,” he says. That confidence applies to content creation as a whole. As Tack says, “You have to try! Check your ego at the door, because not everything we create will be a homerun, just like not every joke you tell on-air will land with every listener. But consistent excellence – trying, tweaking, paying attention to detail and not getting discouraged if something you worked hard on doesn’t go viral – will pay off.” If a show or station is looking to bulk up the in-studio video production equipment, Tack points to a network of pointtilt-zoom (PTZ) cams have been mounted in each Hubbard/ Cincinnati studio; the system runs on its own computer. “These can be set up to be sound activated, so the cameras automatically switch to whichever jock is currently speaking,” Tack explains. “They are installed based on the number of people in each studio and can also be operated manually with a joystick. The audio runs through our existing mics and board, so there is no need to sync anything. Any time we go live, there is a copy saved to the camera’s computer system, or we can use the cams to record something and edit it later.” Video-specific lighting has been installed in the studios, and a television is mounted behind the board with station and show logos uploaded for an instant video background. The panelists collectively agree that video content is an opportunity to appeal to an audience even larger than the station’s current listener base, capture attention and bring that audience in to a new listening experience. “There’s nothing to be afraid of; nobody is perfect,” Cruise assures. “Don’t restrict content because you’re afraid of what people might say.” Tack welcomes contact from those seeking feedback or who have questions. “We get airchecks from each other, so why shouldn’t we get feedback on our videos?” he asks.
