Radio Reacts: Dierks & Miranda

They toured together in 2006 and 2013, so maybe it’s no coincidence Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley opened headlining tours the same weekend, albeit a thousand miles apart. (Call them the Unlocked & Unloaded Tours, perhaps?) Also not surprising: radio pros liked what they heard, and previewed what other markets can expect as both treks make the rounds in the coming months. King Of The Road: If you’re going to kick off a major summer tour, it can’t hurt to start in the cold northeast. Dierks Bentley made that strategic decision when he launched the Somewhere On A Beach Tour Thursday (5/12) at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ with openers Randy Houser, Cam and Tucker Beathard. “We’d just gone through our winter and the energy level made it feel like the first day of summer,” says WNSH/New York MD/PM Drive talent Jesse Addy. “It was one of the nicest days we’d had in a long time. And for a lot of people this is the first fun thing they’ve done all year.” Bentley reinforced his headliner status from the first note of “Up On The Ridge.” “Dierks hit it out of the park,” Addy & Bentley says WKMK & WTHJ/Monmouth PD Chris VanZant. “He’s really evolved as a performer. He’s refined his craft but hasn’t lost that one-on-one connection with the crowd. I walked around the venue all night, from the mixing board, to stage right and stage left. Everywhere I went I felt like he was performing for me. I imagine everybody else was feeling the same thing.” Included in a set list dominated by hits were songs from Bentley’s upcoming album Black. The title cut was a personal highlight for Addy. “It was the first time I’d heard it,” he says. “I thought, ‘This is going to be a big hit.’ That seemed to be the centerpiece of the night. Here & How: More Than A Launch

The first live radio (WNSH/New York) and television (Fox & Friends) broadcast from the terrace of 4 World Trade Center started more than a year before Warner Bros./WMN’s Cole Swindell performed “You Should Be Here” in front of the Freedom Tower last week (CAT 5/10). Label group EVPs Scott Hendricks and Peter Strickland and VP/Radio Marketing & Promotion Chad Schultz got an insider’s tour of the World Trade Center site in 2014. “We went up, saw the offices, looked at some renderings and heard about their plans,” Schultz says. “After that, they stayed in touch, Chad Schultz sent us updates and photos of the progress.”

By December of last year, Schultz and others in the label heard Swindell’s song and knew it would be the first single. “Espo [Chairman/ CEO John Esposito] charged us, as he always does, to think big,” Schultz says. “I don’t know exactly when the thought popped into my head, but at some point I thought about that terrace with the Freedom Tower as a backdrop. Then, when you pitch the idea to Espo and he loves it, you realize you Swindell at 4WTC have to make it happen.” The label team kicked into action, with Schultz, publicist Nikki Herceg and VP/Brand Management Justin Luffman on point. Venue executives loved the idea, as did media partners at FOX and Cumulus. With a terrace capacity of just 75, choosing attendees was a carefully weighed process. “This is obviously a very special, revered location,” Schultz says. “The World Trade Center people put me in contact with the September 11th Families Association and some of the first responders as well. We also had some construction workers who have been on-site since basically Sept. 12, 2001.” After the performance (watch here) and broadcast was over, Swindell got to hear stories from those in attendance. “Cole met and talked with every one of them,” Schultz says. “It was a pretty emotional morning for him.” Likewise for the Warner team who put it together. “We all felt it. The band came up after and there were hugs going around. There was a real energy about it.” And that emotion was gratifying in a way that goes beyond job-well-done, washing away any concerns about a cynical view being taken of the event. “The World Trade Center people really endorsed and advocated this idea,” Schultz says. “They thought having that song performed there could really be a moment and mean something to a lot of people.” It certainly did. Within hours the video went viral, shooting to 400,000 views at a clip of about 100,000 per hour. Currently,

views are past 2.4 million. Those numbers simply reinforce the team’s sense of being a vehicle for a meaningful song. “It’s more than an album launch performance,” Schultz says. “It’s hallowed ground. Sometimes the things we get to do in this business take on a greater purpose, and we all felt that.” Reach Schultz here. –Chuck Aly

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE BMG Chrysalis writer Alexander “Nezzo” Palmer (“Somewhere On A Beach”) discusses his most influential music: 1. “Dirt Road Anthem:” Growing up in Germany, I had never even heard of country. Shortly after moving to the U.S. I heard this incredible song and it gave me goosebumps. This is the song that made me go back and study up on the history Alexander of country music, made me curious about “Nezzo” Palmer Nashville, and ultimately gave me the push to write and produce country. I love both the Jason Aldean and the Colt Ford/Brantley Gilbert versions equally. 2. Notorious B.I.G.’s “Victory:” This was the song that made me want to do hip-hop. The “Rocky” sample is partially the reason why all my earlier stuff was so big and cinematic, and sometimes still is, e.g. the new Iggy Azalea song “Team.” 3. Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter:” I heard “Sympathy For The Devil” in a movie and it made me buy their entire catalog. They’re my favorite band of all time. I listen to them at least once a week. 4. Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black: When Amy died I was devastated that I will never get to work with somebody that amazing. From her lyricism to the way she made jazz cool again, she was the greatest female artist of our generation. 5. The Doors’ “Five To One:” They weren’t really popular in Germany but they, along with the Stones, Pink Floyd, Neil Young etc. were a welcome escape from the cheesy pop music of the early ‘90s. • A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Travis Tritt’s “It’s A Great Day To Be Alive.” I can’t believe I just heard this for the first time recently. • “Important” music you just don’t get: Prince. Always liked Michael Jackson better. • An album you played incessantly: Michael Jackson’s Dangerous. • One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Porter Robinson’s “Flicker.” • Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I can’t really hide the fact that I have the broadest taste in music out of everyone I know. People seem surprised how much I love listening to bluegrass – Rhonda Vincent, The Roys, Steep Canyon Rangers etc.

OFF THE RECORD: Marie Osmond Oliveme’s Marie Osmond puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to KSOP/Salt Lake City, but I was actually raised in California, so I also listened to KLAC in the San Fernando Valley. I got a yellow Disney radio for Christmas when I was five and it was always on a Country station. I loved Conway Twitty, Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard, Mel Marie Osmond Tillis – all of these people I ended up working with! I remember when Roy Rogers and Dale Evans came on our show (Donny & Marie). It was really a crazy life. I recorded “Paper Roses” when I was 12 with my producer Sonny James. My family and I were on a world tour in Paris and my parents said, “Well young lady, your record just went to No. 1.” I was like, ‘What?!’” From Paris we went to New York to perform at Madison Square Garden. So the first time I sang “Paper Roses” [live] was there and I heard it for the first time on a New York station that day. Hearing yourself on the radio never gets old. Sonny James was such a powerful voice in country music that Country embraced me. He told everybody, ‘This girl could have chosen any style – and she chose country.’ Because of my family, pop doors were open. But I remember looking at Loretta Lynn and thinking, ‘Any kind of music that you can sing about your life, be married and have children and tour, that’s the kind of music I want to do.’ I love truck stops. I’m a road rat. I’ve toured since I was a fetus. When you travel with a busload of men, I always buy those hanging air fresheners. I would love to have dinner with Cleopatra. She ran an empire. She was supposedly extremely beautiful and very intelligent. It would be a fascinating dinner – and I would order the same thing she did. Music can take you back to places in your life and document moments. Every song on my album Music Is Medicine was chosen for events we go through: loss, love, finding God, getting through hard times. If music is medicine, this album is the whole medicine cabinet to me. My last impulse buy was home-spun yarn. I almost

was the creme de la creme,” says VanZant. “They were expecting him to do the song, but when that happened it was just crazy. We have a really engaged country audience here in New Jersey. Fire & Rain: On opening night of her Keeper Of The Flame Tour Friday (5/13) at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in Maryland Heights, MO, one could say Miranda Lambert VanZant, Capitol’s Diane Lockner (with guests Kip Moore and Bentley. and Brothers Osborne) brought the fire and Mother Nature brought the rain. Actually, two could say that, and did. KSD/St. Louis PD Dusty Panhorst and WIL/St. Louis APD/MD Danny Montana were both impressed by Lambert’s undeniable star power and her fans’ dogged determination as they endured horizontal rain at times during Lambert’s 20song set. “She’s the whole package,” says Panhorst. “She always stays true to her roots. That’s what I love about her. And that creates a role model for women in country music.” “One thing I noticed right away – it felt like a ladies night out,” echoes Montana. “After the second or third song she asked, ‘Where’s my girls at?’ and you should have heard the response. The women outnumbered the men at the show.”

bought a spinning wheel, too, but I disciplined myself. I like to knit and crochet. The most redneck thing I’ve done lately ... I’ve had a “feud” with my brother Donny for 52 years – does that count? After five decades in show business, there is not one emergency I can’t handle. I am the MacGyver of touring. All I need is some duct tape and a good Sharpie. You will always find me with duct tape in my purse. One time on a plane, Donny was ticking me off and he put his head down on the seat tray table. I duct taped him to it. It was a beautiful moment.

“She’s conversational with her songs and with talking between songs,” adds Panhorst. “You feel like you’re Miranda’s best friend. For some artists it can be difficult to do that. But Miranda has mastered it. She makes you feel like you’re the only person in the audience and that concert is for you. It’s pretty awesome to see.” Lambert executed that personal connection with simple staging – a few risers and video screens. “There were these old-school single light bulbs across the front of the stage,” says Panhorst. “Anybody in the amphitheatre would almost feel like they were watching Miranda in an intimate club.” Sprinkled among the hits were covers including Little Feat’s “Willin’,” Danny O’Keefe’s “Covered Wagon” and Foghat’s “Slow Ride.” “’The House That Built Me’ was a favorite moment,” says Montana, “just hearing the fans sing that song back to her. And really, the combination of all three artists – it’s one of those shows that you want to see them all. Brothers Osborne had a very solid show. The power went out at the very end of their set for about 10 seconds and they never missed a beat. And I can tell you that several ladies who work at the station told me how much they loved Kip. They kept saying how much they love his arms. But he kept the crowd on their feet.”

“I always enjoy going up to the lawn section,” says Montana. “That’s where I feel you can really take in a show. I’ve been on the lawn when you really can’t hear the performer, or people are just talking. But it seemed like people were really paying attention to what Miranda was saying throughout her set. Even at the end, the people on the lawn were still there. They weathered the cold rain and wind.” “It’s an all-around fantastic show,” says Panhorst. “It set the tone for the summer.
