Welcome To Country! Now What?!

As programmers and personalities enter the format, many comment on the welcoming, familial foundation of radio and records personnel and artists. But what few say – at least out loud – is that Country radio is ... different. Good different (!), but different. Country Aircheck asked radio pros what they wish they’d known before joining from another format, and what advice they might give the newly converted. Cumulus WCTO/Allentown, PA morning co-host Hannah Byrom has been in Country four years after spending time in Top 40 and Hot AC, including a stint with syndicated Zach Sang And The Gang. “My initial misconception was there was no way there would be Country listeners in Boston,” says Byrom, who began her Country career at WKLB/Boston. “Boy, Hannah Byrom was I wrong! And I’ll happily admit that. The stereotype is that Country listeners have to come from blue collar, small town backgrounds, but after being in Country radio in a couple different markets, it’s easy to see none of that matters. It’s about the stories and relating on a human level, which you don’t always get in other formats.” Sonoma KFGY/Santa Rosa, CA morning co-host Amber Henderson recalls a similar sentiment when transferring from Top 40 and Hot AC. “I realized very quickly that most people listen to country music,” Henderson states. “It doesn’t matter what you wear or what you do for a living, country is generally enjoyable.” She even admits not liking the genre prior to joining the format, saying, “It was something I was thrown into, but now I love it!” Amber Because the format is more about Henderson connection, Byrom recommends doing your homework. “Start learning the history of country music by listening to artists from each decade,” she says. Where Radio Fits In Touring Restart Like horses out the gate, country tours are about to be on track. Pent-up supply and demand likely mean a chaotic couple of years before equilibrium is attained, however, and radio shows – in all their iterations – will undoubtedly be affected. WME/Nashville Partner & Co-Head Becky Gardenhire illustrates the coming rush with press releases. “There is a different tour announcement planned every day from now through mid-June,” she says. “On the flipside, that’s how traffic has generally been, except everyone wasn’t waiting until the end of July or early August to start a tour. You had a whole year to space things out.” Becky And country is but a fraction of the whole. Gardenhire “This is happening in every genre, and 2022

and 2023 are just as congested,” Gardenhire says. “Bands like U2 or Coldplay might tour every other year or two years, but everyone’s going out and fighting for the same venue avails. Everyone is trying to make up for lost time.” Fusion Music Founder Daniel Miller says time is even more squeezed than usual. “We really started feeling the tsunami a few weeks ago. Riley Green’s touring for next year will be done in the next week or two. We’re already talking about 2023. If radio stations aren’t thinking about next fall, they’re running late.” In the short term, concerts for radio stations are in catch-up mode. “The priority is taking care of stations with show commitments from last year that didn’t happen,” says Miller, whose Daniel Miller clients also include Martina McBride, Cassadee Pope, Lily Rose and Laine Hardy. “We’re starting there, then it’s about trying to find a way to say yes if at all possible. The hardest thing is playing pin-the-tail-on-the-route-sheet. Nobody is routed well. It’s impossible, but it’s a great problem to have relative to last year.” Route & About: “Historically, we’ve been very cautious around Shoreline Amphitheater shows,” says KRTY/San Jose GM Nate Deaton, who books the local Rodeo Club and songwriter shows at a winery. “But you may see a free-for-all, more or less. We’ll probably pay less attention to what’s going on around a date. Particularly if venues remain at limited capacity.” Routing issues and rescheduling can affect artist availability. “Taste of Country in New York had to push back from June, but the lineup couldn’t move because of other Nate Deaton commitments,” Gardenhire says. “Three festivals have now landed on the same weekend in September. As these dates are moving, they’re dealing with losing headliners to conflicts. There’s a lot of that going on.” Gardenhire has also fielded calls from stations looking to get a head-start on concerts. “They thought they could bridge the gap in June and July, but there are other issues to consider, too. Most of the artists are ready, but some aren’t. A few don’t have their bands back yet.” On the demand side, how many concerts will fans have an appetite for? “Not only is there the notion of experience overload, but disposable cash,” Gardenhire says. “What is the job situation? If they typically went to two concerts a month, would they do four? They probably won’t do eight. Still, country fans have pent-up

demand, and we can see that in ticket pre-sales that are overindexing prior years.” Free For Y’all: While radio had its own significant challenges in the pandemic, stations might look for new ways to offer support. “I certainly believe in the idea of radio shows introducing new artists as they have in the past,” Gardenhire says. “Any way to generate revenue is helpful, though – and in many cases it’s not about the artists themselves as much as they want to pay their band. I had a tour manager leave me a voicemail about something, but he asked me to call him back after 4pm, because that’s when he gets off work at Home Depot. That’s where we are right now.” KRTY typically pays for its bookings, or covers expenses for new artists, but Deaton suggests another reason getting new acts in front of listeners is overdue. “How many artists did we break last year?” he asks. “Building market- and station-relationships is important for every artist with music at radio,” says Miller. “A lot of people made zero last year and/or accumulated a big pile of debt. Even though we’re opening up, that might take a couple of years to undo. We know budgets are limited, but it’s certainly better if an offer comes with a proper budget to work with. We want to be good partners to people who are good partners.” Gardenhire says all stakeholders are eager to find a balance. “Are free shows going to happen? Yes. But maybe there are new ways to make the model work with advertisers or sponsors. We’re seeing more willingness from labels to pick up some of the expenses. Everyone seems to be of the mind to get bands and crews paid. They’re the ones who’ve been hurt the worst.” –Chuck Aly

OFF THE RECORD An Off The Record conversation with Audacy KFRG/Riverside MD and Asst. Brand Mgr. and regionally syndicated Kimo & Heather co-host Heather Froglear: I grew up a military brat, so I moved a lot, but a good portion of my middle and high school years was in the St. Louis area, where Classic Rock KSHE was my go-to station. Still going strong today; they just celebrated their HEATHER 50th year. Thinking I wanted to do TV, I studied FROGLEAR Mass Communications at Cal-State San Bernardino, but I got bit by the radio bug while running our campus radio station. I also interned at our local Rock station and was asked to take over weekend overnights. Upon graduation, I was hired at KFRG and have been here since – 28 years this year! I’ve been blessed to have worked with some wonderful PDs including Lee Logan and Ray Massie. When I got my start at KFRG, we were owned by Keymarket Communications, and then-VP/ Programming Frank Bell was also someone I deeply admired ... and still do. In the last several years, I’ve been given many more responsibilities and consider Format Captain Tim Roberts and PD Kevin Callahan exceptional mentors. They empower you to be the best you can be and are brilliant at what they do. My favorite song on the radio right now in any format is “Love You Like I Used To” from Russell Dickerson. The man exudes passion both on and off the stage, and I’m such a fan. Journey’s Escape, John Denver’s Rocky Mountain High, Def Leppard’s Hysteria, Keith Urban’s Golden Road and Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour are albums that reflect where I was at that time in my life. There was always music in our home, and a lot of these albums were comforting to me when moving from one place to another. Last year taught me I am stronger than I thought. Keeping a positive attitude and an openness to learn and sometimes pivot is crucial. Surround yourself with greatness, and people who want you to do well, that show up every day and make you a better person. Thank your people; empower your teams. Include them. Be great together. Messy bun and sweats will carry forward past COVID. No, seriously, I think we’ve learned that we can still connect with our audience and our co-workers in the digital space, and I expect we will continue to further expand on creating great virtual experiences in addition to in-person. I wish I had more time to binge-watch shows, but I don’t. But I will rarely miss an episode of Dateline, and if the radio thing hadn’t worked out, I’m sure I would have made a great detective!

(continued from page 1) regarding an early artist interview after he transitioned to Country from Active Rock and Top 40. “It was my first week in the format, and I had an artist interview where we started talking about some of his early influences,” says Holleman. “I accidentally broke out in song from the wrong Josh “JT” artist. After he mentioned his love for Randy Travis, Holleman I blurted out, ‘I got rice cookin’ in the microwave!’” Silverfish Media Dir./Programming and nationally syndicated Big D & Bubba and Country With Carsen personality Jessica “Carsen” Humphreville previously worked in Hot AC and Active Rock. “The artist commitment to Country radio that is then developed into relationships with listeners Jessica and fans – the symbiotic investment in each other “Carsen” – is something I didn’t see in other formats,” she Humphreville notes. But, she urges, relationships aren’t a crutch. “We don’t have it easier, even with our large number of superstars. Our audience enjoys creativity and storytelling as much as any other, and we have to consistently provide that in order to be competitive.” Henderson echoes the sentiment with a nod toward the audience, “Country artists are close to their fans, and it has to be the same with Country radio,” she says. “In Hot AC and Top 40, the listeners were more passive – listening but not engaging via the phones or social media. But [in Country] we truly feel a close connection to our listeners.” In terms of fundamentals and tactics, all four agree that becoming part of the country community is important. From keeping up with the news (shameless free subscription plug) and joining the CMA and ACM to attending CRS and networking with

colleagues nationwide, participation in “the family” is a proven key to success. “This isn’t where radio personalities go to die – as I was told early in my career in Top 40,” chides Byrom. “It may be slower than Top 40, but it’s more meaningful. If you want to create true, lasting relationships, Country radio is the way to go.” And there are more perks to industry orgs than just the relationships. “I didn’t know we could submit for awards!” exclaims Henderson. “Our consultant recently told us we should be submitting airchecks for awards, and we were shocked ... we didn’t know this was an option for us, and I genuinely think our OM and PD didn’t know, either.” While submissions for Station and Personality honors can be made, rules must be followed. “We learned right away you can’t win CMA Station of the Year two years in a row,” laughs Holleman. “You can, however, win it twice in three years, which we were very fortunate to do during my time [at WIL/St. Louis].” Another absolute all agreed upon was that Country radio has an open-door policy. “The now-retired morning host at WDRM/ Huntsville, Dan McClain, told me, ‘Be yourself. We like you; they will, too,’” recalls Carsen. Henderson agrees, adding, “It’s almost as if there’s an unspoken motto that says, ‘Everyone is welcome here.’” Holleman recently passed along similar advice to a personality eyeing a move to the format. “I promised him the Country audience would be the star if he lets them, so there’s no need to put added pressure on yourself. Country listeners are some of the most loyal out there, and when they find a brand, they stick with it. Keep your content where they eat.” For Holleman, that translates into being true to himself and his love of MTV’s The Hills, craft beer and Adam Levine. “There was no need to rush out and buy a cowboy hat,” he quips. “I do wish someone would’ve warned me not to come in wearing high-tops, though.
