Medallion: Four Enter Hall Of Fame

An understandable solemnity infused Sunday night’s Medallion Ceremony (5/1), as Eddie Bayers, the late Pete Drake, The Judds and the late Ray Charles were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. The prior day’s shocking passing of Naomi Judd was an inevitable refrain, despite a spirited push for celebrating music and music makers, moments of levity and inspired – though mostly downtempo – performances. Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum CEO Kyle Young set the tone. “We will recognize Pete Drake, Eddie Bayers, The Judds and Ray Charles in the ways we know – out of love and obligation, with so much sorrow in the wind,” he said. CMA CEO Sarah Trahern furthered the thought by saying, “Love Eddie Bayers and Kyle Young doesn’t simply build a bridge, it is the bridge. The Judds taught us that, and love is Naomi’s enduring legacy ... As our community grieves, we look to love and the healing power of country music to ease our pain and calm our minds.” Pete Drake: Another theme ran through the evening, however, in uplifting the contributions of often-overlooked studio musicians, starting with steel guitar player Drake. In musical tribute to recordings on which Drake played, Elizabeth Cook performed Bob Dylan’s “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight,” and Wendy Moten sang George Jones’ “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” Hall of Fame session player Charlie McCoy cheered on Drake’s induction, noting his ability to serve the song and artist. “Everything he played fit like a glove, with so much feeling,” he said. “He became part of the records he was on. Airplay Reaction: The Judds

While critics contend that weekend radio has largely become pre–recorded and automated, the immediacy of Country radio was evident as airplay of The Judds’ library dramatically increased after the news of Naomi Judd’s passing broke Saturday afternoon (4/30). Among the 159 Mediabase reporters, 13 titles from The Judds received a total of 98 spins Saturday, compared to just six total spins the previous Saturday (4/23). Among all The Judds 326 Country stations monitored by Mediabase, which include many that are gold–based, spins jumped from 84 to 298 across 18 titles Saturday-to-Saturday.

McGraw Tour: Party Like It’s 1883

Big Machine’s Tim McGraw celebrated both his 55th birthday and the opening of his 17-city amphitheater McGraw Tour 2022 this past weekend. Southwest doesn’t fly to Rogers, AR, so Country Aircheck asked iHeartMedia KSSN/Little Rock PD Jess Jennings to cover the kickoff Friday (4/29). Flanked by two large screens, the night started with Triple Tigers’ Russell Dickerson performing “Home Sweet,” “Every Little Thing” and current single Jennings with Dickerson (l) “She Likes It,” complete and McGraw. with a well-received shoutout to cowriter and Arkansas native Jake Scott. The most touching moment of the night came courtesy of Dickerson’s new track “Just Like Your Momma.” “I saw a mom and daughter in the front row hugging each other,” observed Jennings. “Soft, sweet and melted my momma heart.” McGraw’s band opened his set with “How Bad Do You Want It,” leaving “notta butt in a seat,” according to Jennings. “Had a few side gigs these past few years,” joked McGraw. “I’m either Faith or Margaret [Dutton]’s husband.” The tour incorporated video elements, showing music videos for songs like “7500 OBO” and “Over And Over” before progressing to “Shotgun Rider,” “Where The Green Grass Goes” and “Better Than I Used To Be.” Enveloped by misting rain, McGraw and his band took “Felt Good On My Lips” to the end of the walkway and finished with

“Live Like You Were Dying,” eliciting a “huge crowd response and emotional finish,” notes Jennings. Can you imagine ‘Stand By Your Man’ without that steel part?” Drake’s widow Rose and son John accepted on Pete’s behalf. “Pete loved music and his musician friends more than he did anything else,” Rose said. “The musicians of the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s created Nashville as Music City, and we can’t let that get away. Thank you very much for keeping his legacy going.” Eddie Bayers: Hall of Famer Vince Gill honored his friend and session drummer with a performance of his “When I Call Your Name,” noting Bayers declared the song “so slow that he had to count it off with a calendar.” Trisha Yearwood earned a standing ovation – as did the rest of the night’s performers – with “Walkaway Joe.” Gill returned to induct Bayers, saying of session players, “What’s so beautiful about what these guys and gals do is they make the word democracy live up to its name. They all gather around to try to serve the song.” Bayers recounted his connection to producer Brent Maher – “we go back to high school days” – and The Judds, saying to Wynonna in the front row, “[My wife] Lane and I want to give you, Ashley and family every bit of our prayer, love and support.” He acknowledged he had too many people to thank by name, saying, “I was trying to do the math on all of the recordings, and it involves thousands of people ... musicians, singers, writers, producers ... Many of us can say we are grateful for our music community. In hard and evil times, we’ve been together to support each other, and tonight is no exception.” The Judds: Setting the table for the motherdaughter duo, Young explained, “When Naomi heard the wonderous sound of Wynonna’s voice, she knew the city they belonged in was Nashville. They joined voices, and they joined forces. And they sang in harmony even when they didn’t Ashley and live in harmony.” From the front row, Wynonna Wynonna replied, “Amen.”

Fellow Kentuckian Carly Pearce performed “Grandpa (Tell Me ’Bout the Good Old Days),“ with Gillian Welch and David Rawlings singing “Young Love.“ Hall of Famer Ricky Skaggs handled the induction, opening with, “We’re not going to be sad today. We’re going to have joy.” He foreshadowed Wynonna’s remarks by reading two Bible passages, discussed his first time meeting the duo and hearing their music, and celebrated how it cut through the sounds of the day with acoustic authenticity. Addressing Wynonna and Ashley he said, “Not only are we mourning your mom’s passing, but all of country music and all the people around the world who love the music and love The Judds are praying for you guys. Keep going. Don’t turn back.” Ashley spoke first and congratulated the other inductees. “My mama loved you so much, and she appreciated your love for her,” she said. “I’m sorry she couldn’t hang on until today.” Then Ashley turned to Wynonna. “While this is so much about The Judds as a duo, I do want to recognize my sister – a GOAT.” The line drew a wide-eyed look from Wynonna and laughs from the crowd. “I don’t think she knows I’m calling her the ‘greatest of all time,’” Ashley said, adding tearfully, “I know we’re talking a lot about mom tonight, as we should be. Our beautiful mother. But I want you to know that you’re also being inducted into the Hall of Fame tonight.” Wynonna opened with humor. “I didn’t prepare anything tonight, because I knew mom would probably talk the most,” she said, looking up. She went on, “It’s a very strange dynamic to be this broken and this blessed.” She thanked her husband, Cactus Moser, and other family members and colleagues. “Though my heart’s broken, I will continue to sing, because that’s what we do,” she said, to great cheers from the crowd. “This is the first time I’ve talked since saying goodbye. Yesterday at 2:20, I kissed her on the forehead and walked away. This is the first place I’ve been.” She told of gathering around Naomi as a family then recited what was said there: Psalm 23. Producer and songwriter Tommy Sims then

performed “Love Can Build A Bridge,” adding a final, customized verse in tribute to the song’s co-writer, Naomi. Ray Charles: The 1962 album Modern Sounds In Country & Western Music may be the touchstone, but Charles’ devotion to country music was examined in full during his induction. The War and Treaty sang “You Don’t Know Me,” Hall of Famer Garth Brooks delivered “Seven Spanish Angels” and soul singer Bettye LaVette performed “I Can’t Stop Loving You.” Hall of Famer Ronnie Milsap inducted his friend. “Ray would be so happy today to be part of this whole celebration, because as you pointed out in here, he sang country music like it should be sung,” he said. “Country music was the core of Ray Charles’ life,” said Ray Charles Foundation Pres. Valerie Ervin in accepting on Charles’ behalf. “His appreciation for the genre can never be overstated. Its influence also helped shape his storytelling in other genres. Needless to say, this [induction] into the Country Music Hall of Fame] is a tremendous personal and professional honor.” Hall of Famer Marty Stuart led the closing performance of “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” after encapsulating what those in the room had just seen and heard. “You have experienced almost every facet of the heart of country music, its soul, its people and its music tonight. And hasn’t it felt good? It’s been like church.” Finally, a rare editorial comment from this corner: Special appreciation to everyone involved in the Medallion Ceremony. The Hall of Fame board and Circle Guard; Young and the writing/ video team whose work remains impeccable; audio, lighting, stagehands and staff, right down to ushers and servers – so smooth; CMA and the nominating committee; and last, but certainly not least, the Biff Watson-led Medallion All-Star Band. Everyone involved is due to be commended for consistently making this annual event appear seamless. Even more so, however, under this year’s most difficult circumstance. Bravo. –Chuck Aly CAC
