Inside The ACMs With RAC Clark

56th ACM Awards Exec. Producer RAC Clark goes behind the scenes of the April 18 CBS telecast. With last year’s show postponed to September, how did you approach the quick jump into this one? That’s the fastest turnaround we’ve ever done with a three-hour awards show. Artists came with great music, and the messaging all seemed to come together. We did ask for certain things in terms of music. For instance, we wanted Alan Jackson to do a different one of his classics, but he sent me the medley with “Drive,” and I said, “Yep, you’re right.” What were the messaging points the show needed to cover? First of all, COVID. When we saw the masked and vaccinated front-line workers at RAC Clark the Super Bowl, we grabbed that idea, and it evolved into having workers from Vanderbilt in [the Opry House and The Ryman]. Once you have an audience, you can celebrate a little more, as opposed to September when we had to keep the tone down. Being on the Academy board helped me with insight into its agenda, both in diversity and inclusion and its support of Lifting Lives. We were able to weave those together in having two out of three in terms of diversity, female presence and Lifting Lives on almost every performance without feeling preachy. The other element was showcasing Nashville, which has had a rough year with the tornado, the bombing and the halt in live music. From interacting with her over the last few years, I knew Mickey Guyton would be a bit more effusive than Keith Urban, giving him someone to react to in that emcee role. And according to the Lifting Lives folks, we got lots of donations. So, all the elements came together. How did you freshen the production? Working with [Co-Exec. Producer] Raj Kapoor, we charged the production, design and lighting team to up the production value a bit at the Opry, Ryman and Bluebird. That meant we got to add some scenic elements in the Maren Morris and Ryan Hurd performance. (continued on page 8)

Teri Watson Celebrates 25 Years

Watson was given the opportunity to lead KZLA and KLAC-AM/Los Angeles’ first Country Cares for St. Jude Kids radiothon as Dir./Marketing in 1990. “Seeing firsthand how the funds from our station and the many stations across the country were being used to support cutting edge research and help families receive unsurpassed Miracle Smile: Watson with patient care was Randy Owen. truly amazing and fulfilling,” she says. Fast forward to 1996, she moved to Nashville and opened an ALSAC/St. Jude office on Music Row. Although she “loved the mission and felt great about the work,” Watson didn’t see herself staying for five years, let alone 25. “It was difficult being so far away from family, but my commitment to serving the St. Jude mission and working with the music industry in Nashville won out.” In ’96, Country Cares raised $10.7 million, contributing to a 32-year total now exceeding $950 million. Watson credits the country music industry and St. Jude’s willingness to innovate “We have evolved in our technologies, resources and flexibilities with in-studio and external events on the radio side,” she says. That evolution and success also informed expansion into Hispanic, Urban AC, Gospel and Rock formats. One of Watson’s best memories was the 2007 BNA release Make A Miracle: Country Cares For Kids. “We brought a bunch of patients in to a Nashville studio to sing,” she says. “The label’s Debbie Linn and I worked on it, Randy Owen was one of the artists and other labels provided songs and support. It was a great collaboration for the industry, but for the kids, it was something they’ll never forget. They got to wear headphones, sing and meet artists. It was a miracle in lots of different facets.” While St. Jude was not immune to the effects of the pandemic, Watson says it confirmed the team was already on the right track with its digital transformation. “When we moved to an all workfrom-home workforce last year, our teams never missed a beat,” she notes. All fundraising events became virtual – from marathons to galas, performances to sporting events. “How we fundraise may have evolved, but the hearts of millions of supporters still beat strong for St. Jude.” The biggest lesson Watson has learned in 25 years is, “radio knows how to do radio! Give them the tools and resources and let them do it. They will make it happen.” Case in point: Funds raised by Country radio have contributed mightily to the overall childhood cancer survival rate rising from 20% when the hospital opened in 1962 to more than 80% today. OFF THE RECORD Country Aircheck goes Off The Record with Wheelhouse’s Elvie Shane: The pandemic-inspired life adaption I plan on continuing is, surprisingly, virtual interaction. Zoom meetings and FaceTime made me realize how much more I can see people I care about and handle business from afar. ELVIE SHANE I’m very active on socials. I try to post daily and share my everyday life through stories. I also love coming up with creative video content ideas. I believe I was part of the first hi-def virtual radio tour. We did more than 130 shows in six weeks from a stateof-the-art studio. It was the best 9-5 I’ve ever had! I grew up listening to a few radio stations: WBKR/ Owensboro, KY; WGGC/Bowling Green, KY; and Classic Rock WPTQ/Bowling Green, KY. Every time I hear myself on the radio, it feels like the first time. I’m like, “Holy crap! That’s me!” The County Roads EP is an honest account of my upbringing in rural Kentucky. It spans from my religious introduction to music to my wilder encounters with country and rock. It’s a bit of a sonic roller coaster of my influences combined with life’s twist and turns that got me here today. What’s the most redneck thing I’ve done lately? Well, I just raced a jacked-up diesel truck in a rental minivan ... does that count?? I wish I’d written Gary Allan’s “Watching Airplanes.” I’ve never heard another song that puts you there quite like that one. I’m that character every time I listen. Just sittin’ out here watching airplanes. An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now is Kaleo’s “Way Down We Go.” Right now, I’m bingeing Roadkill on Motor Trend OnDemand.

Congratulations to Tenille Arts, Jim Malito, Dave Collins, Suzanne Durham, Kellie Longworth, Rick Young, Jim Dandy, Anna Bea Major and consultant Gator Michaels on landing the first ever No. 1 for both Arts and the label this week with “Somebody Like That.” Songwriters are Allison Veltz Cruz, Alex Kline and Arts. Tenille Arts The song debuted on the chart one year ago tomorrow (CAW 4/27/20) and, in addition to being Arts’ first No. 1, the song also makes history as the first chart-topper to be produced solely by a female producer (Kline). It is also the first No. 1 exclusively by a Canadian act since Emerson Drive’s “Moments” nearly 14 years ago (CAW 6/4/07). With Gabby Barrett’s “The Good Ones” at No. 2, this week is the first time women have occupied the top two slots since May 9, 2011. Our new Dir. Marcelo Gama said watching last year’s show, he had no idea there was a bar in the Bluebird, so we got all the

tech out of the room so you could see that in the Chris Stapleton performance with Miranda Lambert. At the same time, I was adamant about going other places. Little Big Town’s manager Jason Owen suggested “Wine, Beer, Whiskey” on Lower Broad, which we thought was perfect. All that neon is a readybuilt set. I worked on the inauguration performance by Tim McGraw and Tyler Hubbard from the Bridge Building location with that Nashville skyline behind it and Little Big Town said, “We’re doing that for the ACMs.” CBS EVP Jack Sussman saw the Station Inn on the Grammys and, with [owner] JT Gray’s passing, suggested we do something there. I immediately thought of Dierks because of the affinity he has for that venue. He curated that whole performance with Larkin Poe and the War And Treaty. When they sang the verse about Martin Luther King, Jr., I had chill bumps. All props to Jack and Dierks, and to Marcelo for capturing it. Were the COVID protocols modified from last year? The testing was the same, which is limiting if there’s a lastminute substitution. Little Big Town had to perform as a trio when Phillip Sweet tested positive. I’ve never had to deal with that, but in COVID, you can’t just call someone on Saturday to come fill in. We had clips of past show highlights standing by, just in case. We pushed the boundaries but never overstepped. It was exactly the same as last year with staying six-to-eight feet apart but still able to have the choir for Mickey’s performance, strings with Luke Combs and, at the Ryman, eight players with Alan Jackson. Last year, we only had six.

How do you end up with multiple performances for a couple of artists? Having Miranda with Chris Stapleton was a personal call from his wife Morgane to Miranda. We Miranda Lambert and opened with the Entertainer Chris Stapleton nominees medley in September, so when “Drunk (And I Don’t Want To Go Home)” came out, it felt like a big, fun opening number. Nobody else came with anything that felt big enough to open. There were a lot of new or unfamiliar songs on the show. Were artists reluctant to play hits? We were just on in September, followed by the CMT Music Awards and the CMAs. A lot of stuff had just been seen. The only number we repeated from November, I think, was Carly Pearce and Lee Brice, because Charles Kelley had to fill in for Lee on the CMAs. Stapleton had done “Starting Over” in November, but “Maggie’s Song” is something everyone can relate to emotionally. I fell in love with all three Eric Church albums, and “Bunch Of Nothing” had the perfect energy. Keith wanted to do “Tumbleweed.” Mickey’s song wasn’t familiar, but it was the right fit for a Lifting Lives moment. We did have songs that are charting, like “Famous Friends” by Chris Young and Kane, “Like A Lady” from Lady A and “Freedom Was A Highway” from Jimmie and Brad. We also had Blake Shelton doing “Austin,” Alan doing “Drive” and Thomas Rhett on “What’s Brothers Osborne Your Country Song.” Brothers Osborne closing the show with “Dead Man’s Curve” was about them being live at the Ryman, and the reality that it runs with the credits and could get cut. The balance is between what the folks at home want to see and what they’ve already seen. Does it bother viewers if they see a song performed that’s already been performed on another show? Do they even notice? That’s a good question. I’d like to see some research on that.

The radio winners’ package was very well-received, but still no station winner acknowledgement? We’ve never mentioned the stations on the show, just the personalities. In the past, we’ve had DJs doing voice-overs into breaks. Because of COVID, the Academy was able to surprise this year’s winners with their actual engraved trophy before the show and capture that video. It was perfect for creating a 30-second package for TV. All the credit goes to the ACM staff and [VP/Artist & Industry Relations] Tommy Moore. Is In Memoriam a baked-in segment now? This was the second time we’ve done it, and you have to find the right song. When we heard “Knowing You,” we thought of In Memoriam and asked Kenny if we could use it, but he didn’t want to make the performance all about that. So, when we got to the line “damn it was good knowing you,” we did that long Kenny Chesney instrumental break. What else stands out as you think back on putting this together? I didn’t know who Leslie Jordan was before this, but DCP brought him up as a key social influencer who is doing a gospel album. We didn’t write that “Portable Wagoner” joke, he came in with it. Having the nominees in the audience helped – winners could walk up and accept in a way we really missed in September. Carly Pearce’s reaction was the perfect example. That’s part of what people want to see when they tune into an awards show. And, again, awards show ratings are down. Thoughts? I don’t know what else we can do. Maybe a three-hour show isn’t going to be viable for much longer. The box seems to be shrinking for a lot things, including sports. Where’s the bottom? Just look at what happened with The Oscars. Can we look forward to a true pandemic-free show next year? Might that help? I hope we get back to Las Vegas. It’s country music’s away game, and we all need to get out for a nice dinner and go to a show. Maybe we took that for granted. If we can get back to country music’s “party of the year” after a summer and fall of touring, think about the level of excitement we’ll have after two years of COVID-centered shows. –Chuck Aly CAC

and KKBQ all added more than 100,000 listeners, with the latter two registering their largest cumes since prior to the pandemic. The format’s overall cume still lags 7% from where it stood a year ago at 27,303,200. Legend: A “+” indicates a Classic Country outlet; a “^” designates co-owned Country stations in the metro; a “t” indicates a tie; and a “*” indicates a station that is a recent subscriber for which ratings were not currently available. Ranks are among subscribers.

Country started to show signs of new life in the March 2021 PPM Book (3/4-3/31), with total shares up 11.5 points (3.4%) from February and 50 of 88 stations (57%) showing increases. The biggest story was cume, however, with all but six stations (93%) showing increases. Format-wide cume was up more than 10% from February (22.9 million to 25.3 million), but stations in Texas, where COVID restrictions were fully lifted just after the start of the survey, saw massive gains: KPLX, KSCS
