Analysis: See Spots Run
The introduction of PPM measurement led to a cardinal rule of programming: Spot-sets are best positioned across quarterhour boundaries to offset listening losses. Terms like “bow tie” (spot blocks straddling :15 and :45 on the hour) and “hourglass” (straddling :00 and :30) became standard programming lexicon. Extended music sweeps – even entire dayparts or days without commercials – also became part of the PPM programming arsenal. So, what are stations doing now? What’s working, and what isn’t? Country Aircheck analyzed daily Mediabase logs of Country competitors in eight PPM markets on a random Wednesday in February to see when stop-sets ran and how long they were during the midday shift. Of course, some stations may vary placement on different days or may have commercial-free days not represented here. Analysis included Nielsen Persons 2554 midday data for the month to see if there were any strategies that seemed to pay off better than others. Though prohibited from revealing the specifics of which stations were analyzed, five are Audacy owned, four are iHeartMedia and the remaining seven represent one owner each. The most popular strategy was a simple “bow tie,” with spots airing around :15 and :45 every hour and no extended music sweeps. This strategy was found on six stations, including all five Audacy stations – not surprising since they all carry the company’s Katie & Company midday show. Four stations ran the “bow tie” but eliminated one spot block during the daypart creating an extended music sweep. The timing of the sweep varied, but three of the four stations that used this approach are owned by iHeartMedia. Three stations used the bow tie format but with a music sweep lasting longer than one hour. One station employed an hourglass format with no extended sweeps. (continued on page 11)

From Endorsers To Influencers
According to BigCommerce.com, the past five years brought a boom in brands utilizing social media influencers. From an ancillary marketing tactic to a $5-10 billion dollar industry, influencer marketing continues to be among the more accessible and measurable of the social media marketing strategies. Radio is also discovering the power of branding on-air talent as influencers, defined as “someone who has built a loyal following through their online content creation.” What remains to be seen is to what extent radio is willing to embrace social media influencing as a viable revenue stream. “Digital advertising allows us to get in Dan McKee deeper with our existing customers as well

as expand with new ones,” says Summit/Knoxville GSM Dan McKee, whose team includes Acct. Execs. for Country WCYQ. “Our DJs are some of the best social influencers out there.” McKee says his sellers are charged with bundling on-air and digital campaigns, explaining, “We do social posts during live remotes that are paid for, [and] we include them in with live endorsement packages. We also bundle them with major station promotions that are sponsored.” Game On Brand: With the ability to monetize multiple platforms – Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and Twitch being among the most popular – content is key. “If I’m recommending a mattress on a morning show or telling you to buy someone’s book on a YouTube show, I’m still putting my stamp of approval on something in exchange for compensation,” explains Cherry Creek Country KIYK & KCIN/St. George, UT afternoon personality Chris Cruise. “The problem comes in when content creators begin peddling Chris Cruise anything and everything just to make a buck.” Cruise, who also hosts the syndicated Throwback 2K show, has been self-monetizing his weekly YouTube series to dip his toes in the influencer waters. During the second season of his Home Studio Catalyst, he started charging a nominal fee for industry-related businesses looking to sponsor an episode; his YouTube channel has approximately 1,500 subscribers, and the weekly video series garners an average of 300 views per episode. Metrics System: As with any pitch to advertisers, it’s all about understanding the audience and breaking down the metrics. Professional influencer Leah Rhodes, who is married to Tape Room Music VP/GM Blain Rhodes, previously worked in the music industry as a Mgr./ Production for Tailight TV before monetizing her more-than-20,000 followers on Instagram. “You have to be confident in what you bring to the table, have an understanding of the insights and demographics your account can bring and have a clear and direct vision of how you will benefit the brand,” explains Leah Rhodes Rhodes. Often, the audience following radio personality social channels varies from the station’s P1s. Gaining a true understanding of the social audience for each personality can open the door to revenue streams that don’t require on-air avails. “An influencer brings about a sense of trust, unlike just running a digital ad,” says Rhodes, echoing the longstanding premise of endorsements. “It brings a personality and authenticity you can’t attain with an advertisement

alone. It’s inevitable that in our current climate, personalities of all kinds with social media platforms will continue moving into the influencer space.” McKee agrees and notes, “We need to be wherever our audience is. You never know what the future holds; however, we are committed to make sure we are credible.” He prevents oversaturation by limiting endorsements for each on-air talent. And, when creating content around campaigns, Cruise is quick to point out the importance of both authenticity and creativity. “Each platform is unique and brings its own revenue opportunities,” says Cruise. “Treat each new platform as its own and be willing to create content geared specifically toward that platform and audience.” Rhodes agrees, saying, “I knew that if I wanted to actively grow my audience, consistency was key. Your audience has to know that when they open up that app, you have something for them to look at.” With the continuing popularity of social media and the growing ad expenditures in the influencer marketing sphere, radio has the opportunity to grow NTR by embracing the move from on-air endorsements to online influencers. “The term ‘influencer’ is losing the stigma it once had, and it has become a very real source of revenue over the past several years,” advises Rhodes. “As long as it is done tastefully, it holds credibility with both brands and online audiences.” Reach McKee here, Cruise here and Rhodes here. –Monta Vaden

A day in the self-isolated lives of married industry pros iHeartMedia WUBL/Atlanta APD/midday personality Angie Ward and Point-To-Point Marketing VP/Digital Tim Satterfield: AW: Pre-pandemic, my one-way commute was an hour-and-a-half; getting that three hours a day back changed a lot for my world. Ironically, I don’t feel that Tim and I have much more time together, as our offices are at opposite corners of the house. TS: Having Angie at home is the biggest change to daily life. But, while we both work a lot, we were also very socially active – dinners, brunches, happy hours, games, shows and travel – so right now it feels like all work and no play. AW: I’m up by 6:30am for breakfast and a workout before passing Tim on the stairs as he heads to his office. I do my show-prep, schedule social posts and record shows before stopping for lunch whenever [Amazon Echo smart speaker] Alexa tells me to. After lunch, I shift my focus to helping the sales team with recording spots, videos and specs or attending a client video meeting. TS: Have you seen Groundhog Day? It’s coffee, conversation with Angie, work, lunch, work, dinner, conversation with Angie, watch television, work and go to bed. Same order every day, with the occasional supply run, school pick-ups, feeding the horses and workout sprinkled in. AW: I already had a home studio, but we’ve added two larger screens, a ThinkPad, a new keyboard and a RodeCaster. Tim, being the expert he is, added lights for my video calls and live social media posts, and I added a sunlight lamp to brighten my mood! TS: I’ve worked from home for almost 10 years, so there was no change in my office. We did create a couple
of permanent video conference locations around the house, though. My goal was to get a 10 on RoomRater! AW: In the beginning, it was a big plus to go live and interact with listeners, but after a year, my creativity for content slowed. However, one of my Instagram Reels on the station feed did go viral and get 2.9 million views! TS: I’m fortunate to work with the best creative teams, and the biggest adjustment to our concepts and contests was to have a more compassionate tone. Managing clients’ social media is a primary focus for me daily, so I tend not to spend a lot of time on my own. Of course, I closely follow @AngieWardOnline! AW: No new hobbies ... that I will admit to, anyway! TS: It’s been about revisiting old hobbies for me, including trout fishing and some tennis. That’s where I hit the ball straight to Angie, and she hits it as far away from me as possible. AW: The first thing I want to do when everything reopens is take my parents on a trip. TS: I want to take a 10-day trip to our favorite villa in the Caribbean. AW: We watch a lot of sports, and for the first time since I was a kid, I watched every Atlanta Braves game of last season. TS: Working our way through the entire Bond film series chronologically was the biggest binge of 2020 ... and a great excuse to have after-dinner martinis. AW: I have made a ton of throwback playlists and am also loving my Dolly Parton essentials – she’s my spirit animal. TS: I use music to calm the day-to-day chaos, so I listen to a lot of chill instrumentals and Latin Jazz. And, of course whatever Angie is playing when she’s on-air,

Tim Satterfield & Angie Ward because she makes me listen to her. AW: My go-to quarantine snack has been peanut butter and chocolate chips. TS: Mine has been ... all of them. Which is why my pants don’t fit. AW: The silver lining for me has been spending more time with my family. I honestly didn’t realize how little time I was able to see them until we slowed down. TS: Having Angie at the house has been fantastic! And, I was reminded how lucky and thankful I am to have my work family at PTP. Reach Ward here and Satterfield here.

(continued from page 1)
There were two hybrid formats – one stopping :15 and :30 including a two-hour music sweep, and one with stops around :30 and :45 every hour with no extended music sweep. The market-bymarket breakdown is below; view the graph on page 13. Market A: Both stations ran bowtie sets. Station A had a onehour music sweep starting shortly after 11:45am, while Station B had none. Station A ran the largest inventory load of any stations in our analysis by a large margin, with a total of over 80 minutes in a five-hour span; the second largest total in our analysis was 63 minutes. Despite this, Station A led with a 4.5 share over Station B’s 3.3. Station A also led in weekly TSL, 75 minutes versus 60. Market B: One of two in which neither station carried a music sweep, and the only market in which stop-set placement was totally offset. Station A ran bow tie, while Station B ran hourglass placement (though most of their spot blocks actually ended just before the quarter hour boundaries). This market was also one of the tightest battles: Station B had a 4.9 share, topping Station A’s 4.1, but Station A had the TSL advantage. Market C: Station A had one of the longest music sweeps, beginning before 10am and continuing until about 11:30am. Outside of that, both stations ran bow tie placement. Station A had double the TSL of Station B and the largest TSL lead in our analysis. This was also the largest ratings lead we saw in any of the markets – Station A topped Station B 5.5 to 2.8. Market D: Both used bowtie placement. Station B ran an hourlong music sweep starting just after 11:45am. Again, the station with the music sweep seemed to have the advantage, leading 6.9 to 4.3 with a 30-minute TSL advantage.

Spotset Analysis Of Eight Markets
Market E: The first of two markets where stations vied with extended music sweeps. Station A ran a 70-minute sweep starting just after 11:15am, while Station B ran a sweep of over 90 minutes starting just after 11:45am. Station B, with its longer sweep, topped Station A 5.1 to 3.9, and led in TSL. Market F: The second market in which stations went head-tohead with extended sweeps. Both kicked off just after 11:45am. Station A’s was about an hour-and-a-half long and covered the entire noon hour, while Station B’s was just under an hour long. Station A topped Station B 4.2 to 3.2 and had an extra quarterhour of TSL. Market G: Station A ran a nearly two-hour long music sweep, while Station B ran none, just bow tie placement. The sweep might be expected to lead Station A to victory, but this market proved it’s not that simple. Station A did lead in TSL, but it was not enough to overcome Station B’s cume advantage, which led to a 4.8 share versus Station A’s 3.4. Market H: The second market in which neither station ran an extended sweep. It also featured one of the hybrid formats. Station A placed its spot-sets across the :30 and :45 quarter hour boundaries, creating one short sweep and then a longer sweep every hour. Station B ran a basic bow tie. The stations tied in the TSL battle at one hour each, while Station A won the quarter-hour battle with a 3.8 share over Station B’s 3.0 share. This despite Station A carrying a much greater spot load. Summary: Perhaps the most surprising result is the fact that actual spot load was not a major differentiator for ratings. In five of the eight markets, the leading station had the larger spot load. The two stations with the largest spot loads each led in their respective markets, and the station with the smallest spot load did not lead in its market. Of course, this is not an endorsement to increase spot loads, as listening could just have easily been affected by numerous factors not accounted for in this analysis – personalities, promotions, contesting and marketing among them. PDs React: Programmers from markets that weren’t analyzed were asked for their thoughts on spot-sets, with WXTU/ Philadelphia’s Mark Razz noting that whatever stations do, they
should hold to it. “It boils down to consistency,” he says. “Listeners don’t like surprises when it comes to their routine. We’re trying to be as good a radio station as possible 24/7.” KNCI/Sacramento’s Joey Tack is a fan of extended music sweeps, running three per day. “Research tells us that when folks are told there are no commercials that hour, it motivates them to stick around,” he says. “We intentionally promote the heck out of those sweeps all day and through our marketing. Those three periods provide us the biggest bang for our buck and result in higher AWTE and Persons listening.” WQDR/Raleigh employs a similar threesweep-per-day strategy. “Everyone’s got to assess what works best for them,” says Mike Biddle, who has experimented with various approaches. “I was programming our Top 40 station with [hourglass placement], and we didn’t really see much of a difference.” He says the prevalence of stations going head-to-head with bow tie placement is because, “[Most people] would rather take their chances trying to be the first out. That’s more of an equal race. There obviously isn’t a foolproof way to do that, otherwise we’d all be doing it, and we’d all be winning.” As KYGO/Denver’s Brian Michel reminds, doing good radio is multifaceted. “It’s easy to get caught up in the mechanics,” he says. “In theory, that should help the ratings. However, all the mechanics in the world won’t overcome a poor listening experience. Mechanics for the sake of mechanics isn’t the answer.” Reach Razz here, Tack here, Biddle here and Michel here.
