Q&A: Alpha Execs On San Jose Move

Alpha President/CEO Bob Proffitt, EVP/Content Phil Becker and San Jose MM David Drutz discuss last week’s flip of KBAY/ San Jose and KKDV/Walnut Grove, CA to “Bay Country 94-5” (Breaking News 4/5). (Ed. Note: Condensed for space. Read the full edited transcript here.) CA: Less than two weeks after KRTY’s sale and planned June 1 flip out of the format, Alpha launched Bay Country. When was that decision made? BP: We had looked at doing Country in Bob Proffitt the Bay Area for some time before KRTY left. The two big signals we have – KBAY and [Hot AC] KEZR are a bit too close together, so we’d been thinking about it, including how people approached different variations of Country in the past. We also have three stations we call the Far East Bay – [AC KKIQ] Pleasanton, [KKDV] Walnut Creek and [AC KUIC] Vacaville, which serve east of Oakland. Each one is a market of a half Phil Becker million put together in a simulcast we sell locally and in San Francisco. We were very impressed with everything [late KRTY owner] Bob Kieve and [GM] Nate Deaton have done, but that’s not a booming signal, and when it sold, we decided to take a strong look. Phil, when did we start putting the pedal to the metal? PB: This might be surprising, but it was Friday or Saturday before Tuesday’s launch. David Drutz To Bob’s point, while we’d looked at Country, we had two stations that were performing at a level where it wasn’t worth rolling the dice [before KRTY’s sale]. Most operators in the Bay Area have an underperforming station, and they have the infrastructure to do this rather quickly. Kind of like Christmas music, we though “first in wins.” (continued on page 9)

A Brief History Of Bay Area Country

With an on-again, off-again format history and the impending demise of KRTY/San Jose, Alpha’s KBAY becomes the area’s seventh FM Country outlet. For most of the ‘80s and ‘90s, Malrite’s KSAN carried the banner in San Francisco, while KRTY adopted the format in 1989 covering San Jose. The “Young Country” wave arrived in 1994 with KYCY, and San Francisco was a Country battleground for three years until KSAN left the format in 1997. After a brief stint as “Y93,” KYCY left the format in 2001, and San Francisco proper was without a Country outlet for the first time in two decades. The 95.7 frequency was home to two different attempts at the format under two different owners, with Bonneville’s Bear running 2003-2005, and Entercom’s Wolf lasting 2007-2011. While San Francisco has been without a Country outlet since 2011, KRTY had competition in San Jose with the arrival of Cumulus’ KSJO from 2014-2016. Now, with KRTY about to end a three-decade run in the format, KBAY seeks to serve both San Jose with its 44,000-watt signal on 94.5 and suburban Contra Costa County on the northern side of the East Bay with the 3,000 watt signal of KKDV (see coverage maps). –Chris Huff

OFF THE RECORD Off The Record with Country AF Radio/ Toad’s Tunes’ Toad: Growing up, I listened to the university radio station here in Las Vegas, KUNV, and my favorite show was The Rock Avenue. They pushed out a lot of artists that weren’t quite mainstream like Hüsker Dü, The Cult, The Smiths, Fishbone, Strawberry Switchblade and The Stone Roses. The DJs – like Ken Jordan and Todd O’Neal – were at the top of their game in exposing these newer artists. Let’s throw it back to the late ’90s: TOAD I built my first online streaming station, LVLocalRadio.com, where I pushed out the indie artists via a radio stream in the Las Vegas area. It eventually grew to include artists throughout the west coast from Denver to San Diego. I have this affinity with helping expose new artists from way back in the day being a part of The Killers getting their start to providing a platform with Country AF Radio and Stoney’s Rockin’ Country in today’s country. Being able to pick up the phone or sit with the one and only John Marks has to be one of the greatest blessings in my life … more than he might ever know. He has been the leader in the new country game for quite a while. Being able to see another side to the industry with his knowledge is huge for me. Losing the ability to book and see live music every Friday pushed me into learning a little more about life, how short it is and what a blessing it is. I took the time to jump into some Zoom interviews with up-and-coming artists, share their experiences through the trying times and share what some of them were up to. I took the time to learn how to make whiskey, as well. I started a brand called Blue Valor Whiskey that donated to the Injured Police Officers Fund in each state it’s sold in. It’s all about the pivot, and giving back is a huge thing that we all need a little more of in the world. If we are talking my favorite song on traditional, terrestrial radio, it’s a toss-up between Randy Houser’s “Note To Self” and Jackson Dean’s “Don’t Come Lookin’.” Streaming, I’d lean towards Sam Grow’s “Go Right Now” and Tyler Braden’s “Ways To Miss You.” My five most influential artists, songs, albums and/or concerts are: 1. Congratulations to Elle King, Miranda Lambert, Steve Hodges, Shane Allen, Dennis Reese, Lauren Thomas and the Columbia and RCA promotion Elle King and staffs on taking “Drunk (And I Don’t Miranda Lambert Wanna Go Home)” to No. 1. This is the second Country chart-topper for King (2016’s “Different For Girls” with Dierks Bentley was her first), and the 10th trip to the top for Lambert, with this being her third collaborative No. 1. It is also the first time a femalefemale duet has been No. 1 since “Does He Love You” by Reba McEntire and Linda Davis reached the peak in Oct. 1993. Songwriters are Martin Johnson and King. Kudos to Mike Wilson, Bill Macky and the Black River promotion team on scoring 80 adds for Kelsea Ballerini’s “Heartfirst.” The first release from her upcoming fourth album leaps on to this week’s chart at No. 29 and is not only her highest chart debut ever but also the highest for any solo female since Lambert’s “Vice” entered the chart at No. 28 in July 2016.

Why did you decide not to buy KRTY? BP: The way the market lays out, we would have had to get rid of one of our East Bay signals, and we do really well out there. And the signal scared me a little bit. We want to reach further into the Bay Area and see how we can grow Country in that marketplace. Some stations that tried Country in the city have said, “We’re sort of Country, but we’re also this.” We’re not embarrassed by Country; we love it and the format. DD: KRTY has done a phenomenal job for 30 years as the David versus a lot of Goliaths. Our relative advantage over others who tried to take them on is that we’re a South Bay-based station

with a huge signal. It goes into areas where the Country audience lives that even KRTY won’t reach south of San Jose – Morgan Hill, Hollister and Gilroy, which are now huge Bay Area suburbs. That and the East Bay are where a lot of this audience lives. KBWF dropped Country April 15, 2011. In 2010, BIA said they billed $6.2 million with cume of 427,000. How will you define success? That was 11 years ago, but is $6 million enough? BP: If we had that kind of revenue on ’BAY, I would call that a success. I don’t know if Drutz would – it’s his ass on the line (laughs). DD: Absolutely. If we can hit a number like that in a market that’s still recovering from COVID – which is absolutely doable – then by all means, it’s successful. PB: The Bay Area is comprised of nine counties, and there’s never been a fully committed Country signal that has been able to hit all nine. We hit more of them than former Country stations have. The number KRTY hit last month is a 30-year high, so probably not their real trading zone. They float more in the fiveshare range. With our signal, infrastructure and team, if we’re in the five to seven range, that’s doable and meaningful. Why choose a national morning show as opposed to local? BP: We are Bobby Bones fans and have him on in Portland. He’s done very well and beats the competition more often than he hasn’t. That show fits today’s kind of Country radio station that we want to put on. It was important for us to make sure that we had him locked up, and we got it done pretty quickly. PB: One of the questions I ask all markets when they’re thinking about a syndicated morning show is, “Do you want them on against you?” More often, the answer is no, and we start that conversation. Syndication works if you work the show. We’ve had three phone calls with Bobby since Saturday, and he’s meeting with Dave’s sales team tomorrow.

We intend to have multiple local day parts. To Bob’s point about how quickly we executed, we didn’t have imaging until Tuesday (4/5) at 10:30am, logo at 12:30pm and on the air at 3pm. Bobby’s team and resources reinforced it being the right decision for the speed we need to move. We’ll stay with the music position for the first part of the spring and talk to applicants as soon as this week. BP: It’s extremely important for us to be active promotionally no later that mid May when the shed and winery concert business begins. We need to be in front of that audience. Will you be hiring a program director, or will Phil remain day-to-day? BP: Becker already has way too much on his plate. We are hiring a PD. KRTY is one of the top 10 most-current stations on the panel. Will that lean toward new material over gold play into your approach to music? PB: By being that musically aggressive, they’ve conditioned the Country audience here to be more in the foreground than the background. And they’ve done that for a long time. This isn’t a market that’s going to need a lot of country music education. You likely won’t see us being a super gold-based station. Have you gotten much response yet from listeners, advertisers or the industry? DD: Locally, absolutely. The advertising community has been effusive. One of our air personalities happened to be at the DMV

yesterday, and they had Bay Country playing on the P.A. Among the nine counties mentioned earlier, do you have a sense that the signal covers the hot country zip codes? PB: We went back almost four years looking at every one of KRTY’s hot zips looking for what we could learn and other clues to their success. We think we boom into every place our analysis pointed to. DD: As a city and a county, San Francisco probably isn’t the area you want to be targeting a country audience. But as you start traveling south into San Mateo and Santa Clara counties, you’re absolutely getting deeper into country audience territory. People are living further to the east and south all the time, which is exactly where KBAY and KKDV live. Bob sent a note with the press release saying his decision was influenced by CRS. Was there some afterglow that helped this along? BP: There was. I was very happy with what I saw at CRS. That afterglow – wanting to be in Country in Northern California and seeing the opportunity with KRTY going away – my vote was yes. Our team got together, and we are 100% committed, excited and putting the pedal to the metal with Bay Country. We had a chance and took it. Thank you, Cody Johnson!
