Remembering Connie Bradley

Friends and colleagues remember longtime ASCAP/Nashville SVP Connie Bradley (Chronicle 3/24). Songwriter and Big Loud partner Craig Wiseman: Back in the early ‘90s when I was barely breaking through with a few album cuts and a dud single – if even that – I went to a No. 1 party at ASCAP. (I’m sure for the free food and beer.) As it wound down, Connie was talking with a few well-known writers when Paul Overstreet’s name came up. He was the hottest writer at the time, and it was mentioned he was from Mississippi. I pointed out I was, too, and Connie said, “That’s good, Craig, because Paul’s going to take all that money and go live on a houseboat one day, and we’re going to need another hit writer from Mississippi – and you’ll be him.” Famous heads turned and smiled at me, and I cannot express how riveting Connie Bradley that instant was. She not only made me feel included, but she also nonchalantly anointed me in some way. As if to say, “Of course you’re the next hit songwriter from Mississippi. It’s right ahead.” I was 20-something with nothing but doubts and insecurities; she was beautiful, smart, graceful and most definitely one of the two most influential and powerful women in the music industry. It made me feel like I was doing something right when I was mostly convinced I was doing it all wrong. Like rain on the dust, man. Rain on dust. And it went on and on from there. Connie was a friend, champion, cheerleader, consultant and believer. There will never be another like her, but this business, town and world could use many, many more. God bless you, ma’am. Songwriter Mike Reid walked into her office at ASCAP one afternoon, and she was so taken aback by his good looks she stood up, her foot went into her trash can, she grabbed her desk trying not to fall and swept her phone and a stack of papers along with herself onto the floor. Reflects The McCracken After reaching a 45-year radio milestone earlier this month, Cumulus WJCL/Savannah, GA PD/ afternoon personality Gerry McCracken will hang up his headphones at the end of July (CAT 3/16). “If I don’t call it quits now, my OCD will keep me going until I reach 50 years,” he quips. But before heading for the door, McCracken shares some of his fondest memories and proudest moments with Country Aircheck. “I never considered being anything but a disc jockey,” McCracken says,

sharing his early belief that the music he heard on the radio was being played by the artists at the local station. Still in high school, he landed his first gig at 5kW AM daytimer WBZY-AM/New Castle, PA, where he worked for Keith and Kris Abrams’ father, Terry. He learned the ropes working weekends. “All of the bad stuff happened Saturday night, so it was my job to call the police stations on Sunday morning and get the news,” he explains. “You’d hope for a decent sized crime or the occasional fatality to write about!” Those interactions led to McCracken’s first bylines on the AP wire – some of which, as an admitted packrat, he has McCracken’s (l) first photo in radio at WBZY-AM/New held on to for decades. From WCOS/Columbia, SC to WHKO/Dayton, OH, he honed his on-air and programming skills, raising his profile with headline-grabbing bits. In Columbia, his morning stunt playing off a young boy’s reported sighting of a lizard-man turned into calls from network news programs, USA Today, CBS Evening News and The Weekly World News, among others. “You’re either doing something right or you’re in big trouble when you’re sitting in the GM’s office and the secretary knocks saying, ‘Hey, Gerry, Time magazine is on the phone for you,’” he laughs. “We’re carnies. get the laugh – even at his own expense. “I was doing a remote broadcast in a gazebo on a hot day when some other jocks bought a kid an ice cream cone and paid him to sit at a table across from me,” McCracken (l) with the late he recalls. “The kid Rusty Walker. stared at me for two hours, never saying a word and never eating the ice cream. He just sat there and let it melt down his hands onto the table. I couldn’t’ say anything, because I thought the kid might have had issues. I found out the next day it was a joke.” McCracken’s antics and keen instincts led to his 15-year run as Format Coord. for Cox and as PD at KWEN/Tulsa. He claims to have ruined at least one radio station along the way and owns up to not always being the easiest person to work for or with. “I was talking to a PD I hired and trained about 15 years ago who said one of the best things I taught them was you have to be famous for something,” notes McCracken. “If I was famous for anything, it was for being very conservative in my programming philosophy. I didn’t add songs until they were recurrents. It didn’t make me popular with labels, but it worked!” Something else that has worked is McCracken’s dedication to giving back. “During my time as Format Coordinator for Cox, I sat in on a children’s hospital radiothon in Houston,” he says. “I couldn’t take it. But, seeing the work the station did for that hospital lit a fire in me, and that was the genesis for my McCracken drive to support children’s hospitals, and particularly St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for the six years I’ve been at WJCL.” He hopes to continue serving at JCL’s radiothons, even after retirement. “There are some things you just don’t want to walk away from.” Because of radio, McCracken has lived in 12 states and Poland; was on the air when Elvis died, when Reagan was shot, and when

WI TH Cox KCYY/San Antonio PD/afternoon personality Christi Brooks shares how she’s spending her Quaran-Time. Starting a new job in a pandemic was terrifying. Houston is my home, everything I know and everything my kids have ever known. The idea of leaving all that not knowing what the world was going to be like scared the crap out of me. Not to mention the team at KKBQ was so close. We really were – still are – a family. At the same time, the pandemic has taught me there is no time like the present so, if I was going to leap, now was the time. I’ve learned it’s okay to slow down. My husband, the kids and I have never spent more time at home. With their sports and our jobs, we were ships passing in the night. I really enjoyed just hanging at the house with each other more. Don’t get me wrong, we got to a point where we missed our crazy life, and I’m pretty sure I got on their nerves a bit, but it was nice slowing down. I also learned that homeschooling is not our thing. The minute they were allowed back in that building, they were there. I always wanted to be a teacher; glad I dropped out of college and followed the radio dream, instead. Also, Crocs are the most comfortable shoes ever made. I don’t

care how ugly they are, it doesn’t matter, comfort is key in a pandemic. Professionally, I learned I need people! There are listeners I would see at the rodeo, and I missed them. And I really struggled being at the station by myself at times. I even missed Johnny Chiang. Finding ways to be positive in a time where so much was unknown was tough, but we are all starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, especially in Texas. I still miss my people. I find myself on the phone with some of my reps for an hour or more sometimes, just because I miss our time together. My routine hasn’t changed much, because even in the height of the “lockdown,” I was going into the office every day. The only change was no makeup daily, which was awesome. I do try and get some sort of workout in daily, which really helped with stress during the lockdown, even if it was just out walking getting fresh air. Orange Theory is open again, so I’m getting my splats (Drew Bland). And when I’m in San Antonio, the Erin Oprea app has become my best friend. Since I’m commuting from Houston until we move, a big part of my routine is making sure I give myself enough time on my trip to stop at Buc-ee’s.

the space shuttle blew up; watched the Twin Towers fall while on-air; camped out during hurricanes; and did a brief overnights stint at a Music of Your Life station in Daytona Beach during Spring Break. “I’m not that lucky,” he says. “I can see where God’s hand has opened and closed doors throughout my entire career.” Thanks to radio, he doesn’t feel the need for extensive travel after retiring, either. Instead, he plans to continue to volunteer work with The Manna House. Congratulations to Brett Young, Jimmy Harnen, Matthew Hargis and the BMLGR promotion team on landing this week’s No. 1. “Lady” is Young’s seventh consecutive No. 1 and makes him only the fourth artist to launch a career with seven consecutive chart-toppers. Young is now tied with Cole Swindell, and behind the Zac Brown Band, who went to No. 1 with

their first nine, and Luke Combs, whose first 10 singles have all climbed to the top so far. Songwriters are Jon Nite, Ross Copperman and Young. Kudos to Damon Moberly and the Mercury crew on scoring 29 first week adds for Travis Denning’s “Abby,” which leads this week’s add board. And hats off to Show Dog, as Clay Walker makes his first chart appearance in nine years with this week’s debut of “Need A Bar Sometimes.” Walker last appeared on the CA/MB Top 50 in March 2012 with “Like We Never Said Goodbye.” Airplay for Morgan Wallen continues to slowly increase. One month ago, his library had 360 total spins across the panel. Last week he had 538, and this week that number is up to 712 spins, with 26 reporters giving him five spins or more over the past seven days. However, none of those 26 include stations owned by the three largest chains.

PPM Analysis: Formats Struggle

National PPM format shares continue to illustrate the struggles of the Country format, along with most other music formats, over the past year. Though off nearly a share from its record high 13.3 share last month, News-Talk continues its dominance and is nearly five shares ahead of second place AC. News-Talk was the largest gainer year-to-year, up two shares over last February. Only two other formats saw year-to-year gains: Contemporary Christian (+0.5) and All-News (+0.2). The formats seeing the greatest yearto-year decreases are: Top 40 (-1.3 shares), Adult Contemporary (-0.8), Hot AC (-0.6), Urban (-0.6) and Country (-0.4). Country’s overall 5.9 share in February tied December as the second-lowest ever registered for the format, with only the Holiday book’s 5.2 share being lower. The drop is even more dramatic when compared to February 2019, when Country had a 6.7 share. In demos, Country was actually up a tick year-to-year 1834, with a 7.3 this year compared to last February’s 7.2 share. In 25-54, Country had a 6.1 share in 25-54, down from last February’s 6.4. –Chris Huff

Industry vet Anita Hogin Humphreys: When Connie was awarded the CMA’s Irving Waugh Award of Excellence in 2018, she was asked if she ever experienced sexual harassment in the music business. She answered, “Hell, if you didn’t get hit-on back then, you didn’t think you were cute!” One time, Connie and I and some of our girlfriends were vacationing in St. Thomas. Connie suggested we go see the sunset at Kenny Chesney’s place atop a high hill on nearby St. John’s. She called Kenny, who wasn’t there, but said we could certainly go over, and we did. It was a

spectacular view and an amazing sunset! While there, Connie rang Kenny to thank him and, oops, missed a step on the stairs and took a tumble. She didn’t miss a beat, drop her phone or even lose her cadence as she talked with him – just went on as if nothing had happened. She limped back to our hotel, and by that night her ankle swelled up big as a cantaloupe. She returned to Nashville to see her doctors, and as expected, had a severe sprain that caused her lots of pain for about six weeks. I asked her what Kenny said when she told him about her mishap. She said, “Oh, he doesn’t need to know about that. I wouldn’t want him to worry about me or think he was in any way responsible.” To me, that reveals the essence of this remarkable woman – always trying to help other people either in the music business or in life.

Universal Music Publishing’s Troy Tomlinson: The first thing I think of with Connie is how loving she was. The second is her quick wit. She never had to pause to come up with a comeback. Way back, I remember her husband Jerry telling me, “Let me tell you something about Connie. When she tells you a number, there are two things you must consider. The first is, it ain’t really the number. The second is, you don’t know if the real number is double or half.” He said this in the context of her appreciation for clothes, jewelry and sports cars. Fast forward many years, Jerry was in the hospital and not doing very well. I went to visit and asked Connie to join me for lunch. I just wanted to get her out

for a little break. In my effort to raise her spirits and make her laugh, I told her – for the first time – what Jerry had said about her and numbers. She listened, smiling. When I finished, she said, “Let me tell you about Jerry Bradley. When he tells you something, there’s one thing you need to remember to truly understand it. He’s full of shit 99% of the time.” I thought to myself, well that’s a beautiful marriage. Publishing vet and longtime BMI executive Charlie Feldman: In the late ‘70s, I worked at Screen Gems-Columbia Music, which over a series of sales became EMI Music Publishing. I met Connie because she was the gatekeeper sitting outside Jerry Bradley’s big office at RCA. I would go there every so often to pitch songs. He’d be busy for 10-15 minutes, and I’d sit across from Connie’s desk chatting. She was a very approachable, down-to-earth person with a very open spirit – charming and affable. As I grew in the business and became VP/GM at EMI and she went to ASCAP, I would see her often, and she was the same person as a chief executive as she’d been as an assistant. To me, that’s the highest compliment you can pay someone.

Longtime ASCAP executive Pat Rolfe: The first time I met Dierks Bentley, he came into ASCAP and, as I was talking to him, Connie came flying into the room for something. She left, then he left and she came flying back in. She said, “Holy shit, who was that?” I told her it was some new kid from the Phoenix area who lives here now and wants to get in the music business. And Connie said, “I don’t give a shit if he can sing and write or not, sign him up!” So I did. CMA Foundation chair Joe Galante: She started at RCA as Jerry’s secretary and sat right outside my office, so we spoke all day long. Frances Preston at BMI had a huge lead on signing artists, and I would suggest new acts talk to BMI if they didn’t already have a performing rights organization. When Connie got into leadership at ASCAP, she took me to lunch and said, “I know you love Frances, but give me a chance to compete.” I did, and they won a number of new acts. She was competitive but fair in her approach. Manager Kerri Pauley Edwards: Starting in this business in my early twenties, I didn’t always have female leaders to learn from, but Connie was that leader for me. I never worked for her directly, so I learned from afar. Like me, she started as an assistant, though she would have used the word secretary. Also like me, she worked at a record label and publishing company and continued to grow and succeed by watching, listening, working hard and, most importantly, being good to people. No one ever says a negative word about Connie Bradley. She spent 30-plus years mentoring and fighting for songwriters – the heart of our industry. That seems so fitting. She, sidekick Pat Rolfe and Dale Dodson would humor me with a lunch every once in a while, and those stories and laughter were the best. The lady I used to sit in a chair at the ASCAP awards and pretend to be was as amazing as I had hoped. She had so much class and poise on that big stage in her beautiful gowns handing out those awards. I was and am in awe – and thankful for her love for country music. –Chuck Aly
