CRS Dive: When Sh*t Hits The Fan

A late addition to the CRS 2021: The Virtual Experience agenda, “When Sh*t Hits The Fan” was one of the most buzzed-about panels of the week. For attendees who took notes, revisited on-demand or returned to Country Aircheck CRS Buzz coverage to review – and for those who missed it – here’s a deeper tour of one of the week’s most information-packed sessions. Moderated by KUZZ/Bakersfield PD and CRS Agenda Committee Chair Brent Brent Michaels Michaels, panelists included ADX WYCT/ Pensacola OM Kevin King, Essential Broadcast Media owner/publicist Ebie McFarland, Triple 8 Founding Partner George Couri and Steadfast owner/artist manager Nick Hartley. The session came together shortly after the Downtown Nashville Christmas Day bombing (CAW 1/11) and Country radio’s move Kevin King to temporarily suspend airplay for Morgan Wallen (CAT 2/3). Not incidentally, the session aired shortly after the onset of major George Couri winter weather that shut down parts of the country entirely and left many Ebie McFarland areas, including entire sections of Texas, without power and water for weeks. As such, “When Sh*t Hits The Fan” can be broken into two categories: community disaster and PR crisis. Panelists discussed best practices for dealing Nick Hartley with sudden, sensitive situations that involve a station, personality or artist brand, and (continued on page 10)

Sky Is Limitless For Quayle, Kane The little Rebel Engine that did, Stephanie Quayle, took control of her career in 2013 through the launch of her own label and entertainment company. Quayle enlisted Carli McLaughlin Kane in 2015 and, by Oct. 2017, Kane was running the business. On the heels of announcing their more widely focused new venture Big Sky Music (CAT 2/2), the duo spoke with Country Aircheck about mission, identity and goals for 2021 and beyond. “This is something Carli and I had been discussing this past year – how Rebel Rebel: Quayle (l) much change we were wanting to and Kane. create,” begins Quayle. “Things we

wanted to leave behind, some of the lessons we’ve learned, what we envisioned as the next part of our business partnership.” Quayle is the label’s flagship artist, although they’ve already received submissions, while Kane is running the company and eyeing expansion. “We’re putting in a structure and plans to take on more artists and be a home for great talent,” says Kane. The mission of being a “safe, inclusive, supportive home” for artists and creators with an emphasis on collaboration was born from Quayle’s personal experience in the industry … good and bad. “It goes back to when I first moved to town,” she says. “People would come into my life and say, ‘You’re great, now let’s change everything.’” This, coupled with seeing young, female artists being signed, shelved and dropped, drove Quayle to create another way, not only for herself, but for others. “That was part of the [previous] name, I mean, I’m the little Rebel Engine,” she laughs. In the spirit of collaboration, the label’s mentorship initiative aims to positively impact female artists, creators and young professionals starting out on their journey. “We have, specifically, a lot of experience with female artists and being females in this industry,” explains Kane. “So, the way we have it structured is developing a program where we can share wisdom and experience and the road Stephanie has taken. And if we can maybe truncate the lessons [and] provide tools for other women to excel, that’s the goal.” When Quayle and Kane reflected on what they’d accomplished and where they were going, the duo noticed the word “limitless” kept coming up. After some brainstorming, they chose a company name that reflected that feeling of being limitless, with a nod to Quayle’s Montana roots: Big Sky Music Group. “Stephanie started her own company, we built this team and we’ve been limitless in what we’ve done,” shares Kane. “Big Sky represents everything we are.” Looking ahead, Quayle plans to “put out more music than [she] ever [has] in a calendar year,” develop the mentorship program, get back out on the road and grow the company and its roster. “We are first and foremost focused on Stephanie’s career,” emphasizes Kane. “We have opened the door to allow opportunity to come to us when it comes to talent.” “I have come to realize everything happens on purpose at the perfect time,” closes Quayle. “We don’t have to force anything to happen, but just stay true to our purpose, true to the music and true to why we keep going. We just keep going, and that will make way for others.” Reach Kane here. —Caitlin DeForest

WI TH The Shady Ladies of Music City Podcast hosts Evelyn Shriver and Susan Nadler share how they’re spending their Quaran-Time. S: I’ve learned that I like quarantine lifestyle. I’ve always liked to stay at home, write, compose and daydream. Isolation suits me. E: My entire life during quarantine has revolved around what we are going to eat. I’m sick of it, but I have managed to down multiple jars of honey roasted peanuts! S: I find that I sleep longer and later, but don’t fall asleep as early. I work out virtually with my longtime trainer at least once a week and try to walk for at least 25 minutes a day. We eat dinner with the evening news and, truthfully, I am sick of wondering what to eat. E: My total social media effort is Facebook … and barely. Susan is big on Instagram. That’s our major communication tool. Sad as that is.

S: My big confession is that I binge-watch a lot of shows. Peaky Blinders and Tehran were two of my favorites, and The Queens Gambit was superlative. E: I’ve been bingeing on British mysteries, the Fran Leibovitz thing and way too much House Hunters International (looking for a less polarizing environment). S: I’ve had several close friends and a beloved sister die in 2020, so I’ve started praying every night before I go to sleep. It was a childhood routine that I’ve taken up again, and it makes me feel like I have some closure and have come full circle in my life. E: I guess the silver lining, if there is one, is a new sense of priorities. What’s worth taking a chance on and who is really important in your life. The second season premieres March 25 with guest Martina McBride. Listen here.

(continued from page 1) how to act upon those situations instantly. Actions discussed included managing audience expectations, maintaining awareness of the conversation taking place around the event, advising artists or clients how to protect themselves in the public eye and a process for making business decisions in a charged listener/customer climate. The key best practices, as shared by the panelists, include: • Don’t be afraid to change the station to serve the community. • If your listeners are thinking about it, you should be talking about it. • Take your ego out of the equation; figure out how you can be as honest as possible and own your mistakes. • Look at the brand’s long-term trajectory and understand the goals for longevity. • Get outside counsel.

• Repeat what you want repeated about you. • Focus on the big three: Authenticity, education and honesty. King, who could easily lead his own TED Talk on the topic, is quick to offer valuable action points for stations in the midst of a community tragedy. “Be familiar with the people distributing info, and make sure they’re familiar with you – local news, weather, first responders, local leaders and emergency operation centers,” says King. “Get to know them beforehand, because they will be too busy in a crisis to get to know you.” King breaks down radio needs into two categories – things you can see coming and things you can’t see coming – and also advises PDs, OMs and others in positions of leadership to have a “Rolodex” at the ready with trusted advisors in HR, PR and legal counsel roles. King also noted the importance of preparing for scenarios in advance, setting groundwork for how to execute station plans in any situation, being certain the staff understands the plan of execution for various emergencies, and that they know the proper

communication channels. “Something will draw your station into community service,” states King. “Don’t learn as it happens.” He advised putting together a list of contacts by first visiting the website for your community’s local emergency operations centers. The discussion also addressed handling the station brand onair, online and on the streets in the midst of a crisis. Understanding the brand’s commitment level is key, and the situation typically continues to be an emergency long after national news coverage has subsided. To that end, McFarland advised, “The key is to be part of the bigger solution, long term, not just focusing on crisis management in that moment.” She points to the importance of remaining calm and collected while also knowing the client, station or personality brand in order to congruently employ the most effective strategy. McFarland shared an example of understanding the authenticity of a brand as she dealt with a PR situation involving client Darius Rucker. “There was a ... parody account on Twitter ... [who] said, ‘$500 to anyone who can prove Darius Rucker has The Best Of Patsy Cline,’ talking about a line in one of his hits,” McFarland said. “Thankfully, because Darius has been a client for a long time, we were able to text him and say, ‘Hey, send us a photo of your bookshelf with the Patsy Cline records on it.’ He did, and we tweeted back in response, ‘Make it payable to St. Jude.’ We took a moment where it was questioning authenticity ... and we were instead able to turn it into a light-hearted moment that benefited a great cause that is also part of his brand ... and de-escalated a situation.” “No matter how prepared, there will come a time when an artist or personality is misinterpreted on-air, online, in print ... be prepared to handle the effects of translating the intended message,” advised Couri. He explained the importance of clarity in communication between the brand and the mouthpiece, be it an artist and their team or a station and its personalities.

Page 17

Constant communication between all teammates reinforces how each person’s role plays into the brand’s overall strategy. And when addressing problems after they arise, Couri says honesty is paramount. “For the most part, if you’re honest with the public and tell them what’s going on, you can avoid some of the problems,” he explained. But if there is a mistake? “Own it!” emphasized Couri. “Stay calm. Don’t get emotional, and get your ego out of the way. The team will jump in and help.” Hartley added, “The truth gets out there more than ever. The idea of running from things and making up some other narrative doesn’t exist. Know what the truth is, what the artist [or personality] might have been trying to say. There are [also] times where there is click bait out there. You don’t need to jump into every rumor and every finger that points at you.” Calculated authenticity allows for genuine control of the narrative. “You have to have a unified voice and the same consistent messaging as a team,” he said. Moving on from a crisis or disaster can be a tricky call. The amount of time that passes will be unique for each situation and each market, but understanding the audience and the impact the event continues to have is the truest indicator. “If your listeners are thinking about it, you should still be talking about it,” King summed.
