Bentli Shifts From Radio To Radio

Ty Bentli took a leap of faith in 2020, leaving a Westwood One/Cumulus nationally syndicated morning show he says had “just hit its stride” for Apple Music and its yet-to-be-announced Country channel. Two days into his new job, a tornado shut down Nashville – then a pandemic shut down the world. Now celebrating his one-year anniversary at Apple Music Country, Bentli finds himself in a new iteration of radio that allows him connect his family-first ethos with the power of music. Fundamentally, Bentli says his new gig lets him be himself. “I found a job that lets me dig deep into the catalogue of music that exists and break free from a politically-formulated playlist,” he says, noting it also let him break free from chasing what’s popular to be able to invest in the “unpopular” things that make him “him.” “We start in this industry as people who love sharing what we love with others,” he explains. “We organically live the lifestyle of a piece of the audience. Then, as we grow, our joys shift. We start to strategize as entertainers, which often leads to adopting a love of the pop culture elements that Ty Bentli relate well to others.” At the top of that list: The Bachelor and TikTok dances. “I would think, ‘Well, The Bachelor is kinda interesting,’ so I’d watch it because it was good content for the show but skip a snowboarding trip or reading up on SpaceX rockets — things I actually love.” Sacrificing Cubs games to learn the latest TikTok dance may have paid off for the show, but Bentli counters it “hurt his ability to live and love life.” Apple Music Country launched in August (CAT 8/18/20) with Bentli broadcasting live from the control room under strict protocols. The Book On A Heritage Station

When Local Radio Networks’ Jim West started sharing photos on social media from his days as a DJ at KNIX/Phoenix, he had no idea what it would lead to. Friends, colleagues and even former listeners wanted to see more. Eventually, he realized he needed to document that history ... and that’s how books get started. West turned to former coworkers including Country Radio Hall of Famer Larry Daniels and Michael Owens

Michael Owens (former GM) and Larry Daniels (former PD) to unearth photos dating back to KNIX’s earliest days. Eventually, West says, “I solicited as many alumni from the station as I could for a story or picture.” West then assembled a chronological history covering one of the format’s most legendary stations. The result is KNIX: The Buck Owens Years. KNIX traces its roots to an AM station Buck Owens bought in 1967: KTUF. Naturally, he installed a Country format. A year later, he bought an FM station, KNIX, to pair with it. KTUF became KNIX-AM, but the pair struggled for several years, unable to gain traction in the market. According to West, it was the threat of thenPD Daniels leaving the station in the mid ‘70s that led to Buck’s son Michael moving from Bakersfield to Phoenix to take over as GM. The younger Owens gave Daniels a simple directive: “Do what you need to do.” In 1979, Daniels hired West to join the airstaff, where he witnessed firsthand as the station – led by Owens and Daniels – “just took off from there.” The station celebrated its first No. 1 finish in the spring of 1980 and regularly finished at or near the top for the next 20 years. West was at KNIX for eight of those years, and he regarded them as a master class in broadcasting. “Probably one of the biggest takeaways was credibility – being true to what you were going to do,” he says. “We’d develop a plan and follow through on it. I learned so many lessons working there.” He calls Daniels “a master strategist” who was “licking stamps and envelopes, sending out questionnaires and doing music research on listeners” long before the advent of computers and cell phones. Among the book’s many anecdotes is a story involving Willie Nelson, who is pictured being dwarfed by a giant cake in the shape of Arizona. Nelson was in concert in Phoenix on his 50th birthday, and the KNIX staff led the celebration with a backstage serenade of “Happy Birthday.” Afterward, West says Nelson turned to him with a smile said, “If you’re gonna sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to somebody, at least sing it in key.” Similar photos and stories fill the book’s 70 pages, illustrating the deep connections KNIX made between listeners, staff and artists. “The emotions were there,” West says. “People loved that

radio station. They felt like they were a part of it, too – and they were.” See a video about the book here, order online here and contact West here. –Chris Huff

WI TH A look at how Valory’s Heath Sanders is spending his Quaran-Time: Last year, I found out I’m definitely not a homebody! I learned that when confined to my house — and not on the road playing shows — my creativity suffers. If you’re going to sing and write about a way of life, you’ve got to be out living that life. Being on the road and playing shows is where I’m supposed to be. My quarantine routine is scrambled eggs and wheat toast, gym, then write. And hanging with my dog in between. That’s about it. I never thought I’d say this, but I’m basically a professional Zoom-er at

this point. Not really a new hobby, but I’ve developed some new habits. I now have a TikTok! Probably wouldn’t have if it wasn’t for quarantine. We’ve been utilizing Zoom to reach out to radio and industry folks to get to know them better, reaching out to fans via social media and doing interviews. I always binge The Office but have added Yellowstone and listened to more of The Joe Rogan Experience. My go-to quarantine snack is Zapp’s Voodoo Chips. They’re unreal. The silver lining of the past year is I’ve had more time to get outdoors and take a deep breath before we really go at this thing!

Bentli Shifts From Radio To Radio (continued from page 1)

“Only my show and Kelleigh Bannen’s team were allowed in the Nashville studio, with a deep clean in between, PPP for the producers (who were spaced out at great distances inside our massive studio), with me standing behind a giant plexiglass barrier that made me feel like I should be processing people’s check deposits.” Two months later, Bentli and his pregnant wife Corri tested positive for COVID-19. “I was asymptomatic, so I continued the show, but now from home, where Apple Music helped create a fully live, broadcast-capable studio at my house.”

Agents Of Shield

His alarm clock not going off at 3:15am wasn’t the only change to his “routine,” which he cites as the true challenge of the past year. Through trial and error, Bentli believes he’s gotten into a pretty good rhythm. “I get the kids up for school, then get cracking on the music I want to play on my show,” he begins. “I have meetings in the mornings, including a daily video call huddle with my team of producers where we lock in details for the day’s show, schedule interviews and look at strategy planning for the upcoming week. Around 11:30am, I record interviews via FaceTime. As the first airing of my show happens, the team is in full production mode, and I’m tackling socials. Afterward, I catch up with producers as needed and hit my production studio to do pickups on interviews or specialty programs, while my team handles a billion technical aspects of turning the live broadcast signal show into an On-Demand version available to Apple Music subscribers.

Page 13

And I update my Apple Music playlist: Ty Bentli’s Daily Soundtrack.” (Listen here.) Bentli admits social media had been a weakness for him, but as The Ty Bentli Show grew to 165 countries, he saw an increase in interaction on socials, especially Instagram. “I use my Translate app to reply to listeners who speak a language I’m not fluent in,” he says. “Our conversations primarily start based on music then become more about building an understanding of each other and cultures.” One of his favorite things to ask is “Where are you from, and Stork Raving Mad: what’s the most famous piece of your Bentli and wife Corri hometown,” a question he viewed as welcomed Teddi Quinn in February. a “lazy topic” on terrestrial radio in the U.S. But, he says, “It’s fascinating when you’ve got people writing back from the Outback in Australia or proclaiming their love of country music from Israel!” While much has changed, one thing hasn’t: Bentli’s love for radio and its constant element of unpredictability. “I love radio because it allows for something different to happen every day.” More time with family has served as the silver lining of the past year for many, and Bentli says it’s even bigger than that. “The world was moving too fast, and last year shifted everyone’s understanding of how productive we could be if we utilized technology and set fair expectations for each other,” he concludes. “There were massive sacrifices that re-enforced the need to slow down, so I hope people continue to value this evolution and focus on the true priorities in our lives.” Listen to episodes of The Ty Bentli Show here. —Caitlin DeForest

“I’m just different. I like to think it’s because I show my heart to my listeners, show integrity and love talking to people. I’m constantly show prepping and thinking of ideas I could incorporate on my show, website and social media. Radio DJs used to be the equivalent of a therapist or good bartender, but instead of handing out prescriptions or alcohol, we handed out vibes and emotions while making memories along the way. That’s what I’ve always believed and how I work.”
